Not a problem.  I wasn't aware of where the current povery level was and wanted to actually pin down the numbers.  I wouldn't have an issue with those numbers, especially as my earning potential is likely to never hit the single mark.

Based on HHS levels for the lower 48 in 2007-2008, that puts your threshold at $260,000 for a single person and $530,000 for a family of four.

I think that a good starting point would be 50%.  The idea that half or more of the money you earn is given directly to the government would be a point that most people could agree on.  And of course, that doesn't take sales tax, property tax, etc into account.
7647  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Re: Obama's proposed 2010 budget juices carriers for more cash on: March 07, 2009, 06:20:23 PM
I need to some research and see where the legal precedent was set that the electromagnetic spectrum belongs to the government to license and that we have the right to lease it out.  I can certainly see the regulation of technology as the right of the government, but ownership seems to be taking it a bit far in my opinion.

The government operations in this regard amount to a state monopoly.  It's not like the carriers can do anything but pay the increased rates or go out of business.  It's not like there's some other organization selling spectrum that they can use.

Honestly, even loving the AFC like I do, the Chiefs are never on my radar.  I guess most of my attention ends up being devoted to the AFC and NFC East divisions, one because of my team of choice and the other due to my location.  If TO went to the Chiefs, maybe he'd be less of a media circus, but I doubt it.
7649  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / [NASA] Kepler Space Telescope to launch tonight on: March 07, 2009, 03:24:10 AM
The Kepler Mission is due to launch this evening at 10:49 EST.

The Kepler craft will survey the Milky Way to look for rocky, water-bearing planets in our galaxy, dialing down the searches from the super-Jupiters that we have been racking up.

Quote
NASA delayed Kepler's launch by one day last week to allow extra rocket checks on the spacecraft's Delta 2 booster to ensure it was fit to fly. The precaution, stemmed from the Feb. 24 failure of a different rocket carrying a NASA Earth-watching satellite, found Kepler's booster in fine shape for tonight's planned liftoff, mission managers said.

Kepler will not be orbiting the earth, but apparently placed into a solar orbit that trails the earth so that it can continually observe stars without our pesky planet getting in the way.  (Man, I'd love to see some of the math about the forces involved in making that work...)

Quote
After launch, Kepler is designed to turn its unblinking camera eye at a patch of sky between 600 and 3,000 light-years from Earth in the direction of the constellations Cygnus and Lyra. The target zone covers an area similar to what a human hand could cover when held at arm's length.

Kepler will stare at the region for at least 3 1/2 years, measuring the light from 100,000 stars every half hour with a 95 million-pixel camera to watch for the slight dip in a star's brightness that signals a planet moving across it as seen from Earth. It's the equivalent of trying to spot a flea crawl across a car headlight from miles away, NASA has said.

Who wants to watch it with me?  Less than 30 minutes to go.

Has anyone hit a homer in Fenway that has hit the Monster behind the stands in CF and then dropped into the crowd?  There was a bug that I reported to 3DO back in the High Heat days where that would result in the game calling it a ground rule double.  I sent the question to eric Nadel of the Rangers Radio broadcast after they played there, and he confirmed that it should be a HR if it's in fair territory, a ground-rule double if it hits the wall in fair territory, then drops into the stands in foul territory.
7658  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Re: Obama's proposed 2010 budget juices carriers for more cash on: March 06, 2009, 04:23:46 PM
The argument from the carriers is that they (and by definition, their consumers) are already doing more than their fair share.  If you increase the burden on a successful business, they either have to pass that burden on to the consumers (note the fees referenced above) to maintain their expected models or start taking chunks out of their operating revenue, which puts an impact on their ability to maintain and expand the business to remain successful.

If the carrier's spectrum fees increase 300%, you can expect to see it passed along in the Regulatory Cost Recovery Charge.  There are more than 150 million cell customers, so you can expect to see less than a $1/user (I assume yearly).  Without the reporting, you would likely never notice it on your bill.

Tim Roth is a villain in my mind. A multi-leveled villain with admirable qualities, but a villain none the less. His acting always brings a seriousness, a gravitas if you will, to any role he plays, and in something like that I can't see myself enjoying it.

For me, watching Roth on a weekly basis in episodic content on a prime-time investigation show is like having Christopher Walken replace Wayne Brady on "Don't Forget the Lyrics". Tongue

Wu-Yi should be able to tell you what bank the card was drawn on.  I believe that each bank is issued a block of numbers to issue similar to area codes for phone numbers.

As for the credit report, I think that there are delays.  I had paid off a dental loan that had not been reflected yet.

Should I apply for a new Social Security number?

Under certain circumstances, the Social Security Administration may issue you a new Social Security number - at your request - if, after trying to resolve the problems brought on by identity theft, you continue to experience problems. Consider this option carefully. A new Social Security number may not resolve your identity theft problems, and may actually create new problems. For example, a new Social Security number does not necessarily ensure a new credit record because credit bureaus may combine the credit records from your old Social Security number with those from your new Social Security number. Even when the old credit information is not associated with your new Social Security number, the absence of any credit history under your new Social Security number may make it more difficult for you to get credit. And finally, there's no guarantee that a new Social Security number wouldn't also be misused by an identity thief.

As for the DL#, I would imagine it's a similar situation and probably more trouble than it's worth.  The fraud alerts are pretty much what LifeLock does anyway.
    7673  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Personal info. hacked? Need help, suggestions, advice. on: March 04, 2009, 07:18:44 PM
I'd follow up with the bank and get the specifics on the breach that they were made aware of.  Get all of the information that you can from them.  Filing a police report once you have the details will allow you to put the fraud alerts on for no charge, whereas preventative holds require a fee.  A police report will get your paperwork in order, but likely not much else, as you run into jurisdictional issues and whatnot.  They may be able to refer it up the chain to appropriate law enforcement, but I doubt it will result in much action other than having your ducks in a row.

You can get info on the credit reports here.  It costs a small fee to get the score, but I imagine that is a tertiary concern at the moment.  You can either get all three at once or stagger them.  It should tell you what accounts are open, how long, etc.  Should be easy to see what happened when.  I'm not sure how fast they get updated, however.

All this being said, I have not been through this, so my advice is based merely on my own academic research.  And, of course, IANAFL.
    7674  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Personal info. hacked? Need help, suggestions, advice. on: March 04, 2009, 06:58:26 PM
The Federal Trade Commission is here to help.

    1. Place a fraud alert on your credit reports, and review your credit reports
    2. Close the accounts that you know, or believe, have been tampered with or opened fraudulently.
    3. File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.
    4. File a report with your local police or the police in the community where the identity theft took place.

Some of us don't have issues with reading off of backlit screens for long periods of time.  On the other board, I compared it to playing a PSP or DS for a long period of time.  The iPhone is more portable than the Kindle.  If there were a book that I wanted to read but didn't feel like owning in hardcover and a $10 version were available before the paperback was due, I would certainly consider it.  I would imagine that commuting passengers that already have an iPhone will like the option.  It won't ever be a replacement for books like the Kindle is supposed to be, but it will definitely take another step in mainstreaming the ebook market.

I don't think it will sell iPhones on the strength of this development by itself, as the long term cost of ownership is higher for the iPhone ($200 device, $30/month data), where the break even point is 5 months and 10 days.  But multiple functionality is where everything is going.  I don't think the Kindle is a one-trick pony, but the possibilities with the Kindle pale in comparison to the iPhone's feature list.  They mention that you can't use the iPhone Kindle app to purchase books, but that's not a big deal, as I can access Amazon from the Safari browser and purchase them from there.
