Neither of them grab my attention and make me want them to win.  And if I can't back a horse in the race, I rapidly find something else to watch.

I did see Nadal take down Federer at Wimbledon, and was rooting for him, but mainly as an objection to Federer.  I just don't care for either of them.

I find it hard to find anyone that I want to watch since Andre retired.  That being said, I fondly remember crawling into school one morning after staying up all night to watch his 5-set come-from-behind win in the Aussie Open in the late 90's.

I fail to see how you could accuse Brendan of being biased toward the Israelis, especially given the post at the top of this page.  Stating that they are committing war crimes is support?

Quote from: Brendan on January 06, 2009, 06:02:26 PM

Oh, please.  What the Israeli military is engaging in right now, as they kill even more civilians is collective punishment - forbidden by the Geneva Conventions as a war crime.  It doesn't matter whether Hamas leaders hide amongst civilians - it's still indefensible morally.  There is no question that Hamas engages in terrorist actions against civilian targets, and that it's indisputably wrong.  Again, as I mentioned earlier, it's also indisputably wrong that Israel is killing or wounding thousands of innocent Palestinians.
...
What you're going to see are more attacks on civilian targets in Israel, not fewer.  The Palestinians were displaced into an apartheid state, where they're crammed into horrible living conditions, their territory is constantly encroached upon by unrepetant settlers, and the Israeli military routinely blocks medical supplies and food  from entering the country.  They've created a powder keg of resentment, and we're expected to be suprised when it explodes?
...
Hamas' attacks on civilians are outrages, but so are Israel's.  Israel doesn't get a pass on morality because of the Holocaust or because of their war for independence against the arab nations.  Both sides need to have their behavior examined critically.

So yeah, your attack on his post seems trollish to me.

Only last September did the United States grant Israel's request to supply it with 1,000 bombs of a new type, the GBU-39. They arrived at the beginning of December, and inhabitants of Rafah have witnessed their use - without knowing what they were - since the first day of the aerial attacks on the tunnels there.
...
Gazans have noticed that there are bombs that produce mushroom clouds in various shades of red.  This sounds like they may be talking about the same weapon.  Here, Garlasco admits, "I can only speculate. It looks like Israel is maybe using a new weapon that it was not using before...

This sounds like they may be talking about the same type of weapon.  It sounds similar to what I have heard about the old BLU-107 Durendal, which was used to crater runways from underneath to maximize damage.  The reports I saw on it mentioned that it formed a white mushroom cloud when it detonated, more a function of the gasses escaping from a small hole than anything directly tied to the type of explosive.

cheeba, if you're waiting on people here to give you updates about all the developments in this war, then you are so looking in the wrong place.  Or did I miss your intent on your comment and it wasn't a blatant troll attack?

If the genre as is 'shoot guns at _____' then yes.  I can't speak to QOS, but COD is nothing like L4D which is nothing like GOW2 which is nothing like COD.

That would be the definition of shooter, yes.  Which would certainly not fall under my definition of "nothing like," especially since I can have my WWII shooter and have my brains eaten, too.

And I never said that it wasn't selling well, just that I didn't think "crazy" was an apt modifier for third place in its genre.

If the former, well 1 million in 2 months is proof enough that you're wrong. If you're arguing the latter I agree. COD5 is selling better than L4D.  However, it's not selling nearly as well as Michael Jackson's Thriller album did in the early 80s. I see the two about as connected as whatever it is that you're trying to say.

Now if I had said OMG L4D is outselling COD5 well then you're on target. As it is, you're making no sense whatsoever.

Yeah, cause there are no similarities between the two squad-based shooter combat games...   Roll Eyes

Yes, Left 4 Dead is selling well.  But it's not even tops in its genre in sales.  Based on Gamespy rankings, there were 4 "shooters" that came out in November:  CoD, L4D, Quantum of Solace, and GoW2.  Each one has its own fanbase to appeal to, but at the base concept, they fill the same genre.  And Left 4 Dead is third on the list for December.

As is often the want, Call of Duty fans will be able to log into World at War on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this weekend to enjoy double experience points when playing multiplayer online playlists. A second "gift" from Treyarch comes in the form of the Nazi Zombie mode unlock; usually gamers need to have beaten the single-player campaign before they gain access to this co-op mode, but over the duration of the double XP weekend, this gametype will be unlocked and available to everyone.

Everyone will be eligible for Double-XP starting Friday, January 16 2009 @ 10:00AM PST

I dispute your contention that it's "selling like crazy" when the nearest game in terms of base mechanics is outselling it 3-to-1, new IP notwithstanding,

I dispute that 1 million copies in 2 months is not selling like crazy. After two months in release, it's only 600k copies behind the 10th best selling game of the entire year 2008.  IIRC, sales of L4D were 200k+ higher this month than last month.

If that's not crazy, I'm not sure how crazy is calcuated.

So 1 million for L4D, huh?  Compared to 3.87 million for Call of Duty...  So if 1 million is selling like crazy, then CoD:W@W must be selling like paranoid schizophrenia with dissociative identity disorder.

Maybe I've watched too much Law and Order.  the judges presiding over the cases seemed to make a lot of decisions about what was allowed and why.  If it's reasonable that the police would have happened upon evidence in a normal manner barring the illegal search, it can be admitted anyway.  In the OP, it seems to me to be an extension of that beyond what most people would see as reasonable.  I can easily see Mr. Herring working on his civil case against the Sherriff's department since the decision did indicate that his Constitutional rights were violated.

...at 1/3rd the rate of Call of Duty: World at War....

And?  Not sure you can compare a brand new IP against a 7 year (?) old blockbuster franchise.  In two months it has already moved over a million copies (on 360 alone) which is incredible given that it's a new IP and doesn't fit into your standard shooter genre.

Yes, but it's by a proven developer.  Valve has a solid reputation in the PC industry and has been making solid in-roads into consoles with the Orange Box/Portal.  That benefitted the title drastically, with a 160% pre-order increase over the Orange Box.  Not to mention the $10million media blitz that was put behind it.  I dispute your contention that it's "selling like crazy" when the nearest game in terms of base mechanics is outselling it 3-to-1, new IP notwithstanding, especially when the consensus is that the setting for CoD:W@W has been done to death, being the 4th of the 5 games set in WWII.

Honestly, it all comes down to practice.  I started my first shooter in 11/11/08 when CoD:W@W was released.  As Hark and company can attest, I was horrible (still am some days).  But I have gradually moved up in skill to where I can rarely top the leaderboard and usually not be dead last on my team.  My K/D is still pitiful at .58, but that's fighting uphill against the horrible start that I had.

Initial Report

Quote
Cooke County Sheriff Michael Compton said ... Cynthia Darlene Stout was arrested on a charge of child endangerment after she and at least one other person left three of the children, ages 14, 7 and 4, at a cafe in Woodbine. The fourth child, an 18-month-old, was left with a woman at a nearby residence, Compton said.

The reason?

Quote
...a container filled with a caustic substance burst in the cab of their pickup, authorities said.
...
Compton said the hospital told one of his investigators that the substance that burned the children was sulfuric acid.  He said it was unclear why the material was in the truck.  "We do not think it was an intentional act," he said. "Why a container would burst is the $64 question."

Compton said Stout, 43, was apprehended trying to leave the scene. Cooke County Jail officials said Wednesday night they did not know whether Stout had an attorney. The search continued for the man who dropped the 18-month-old off at the house. He declined to identify the man because no charges had been filed.

New details

Quote
Cooke County Sheriff Mike Compton said Thursday that Tracy Escobedo, the father of the infant in the car, was in a verbal altercation with Ms. Stout when he attempted to throw the acid at Ms. Stout. But Escobedo missed Ms. Stout and the acid spilled onto the children.
