7561  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Re: Israel Strikes Gaza on: February 06, 2009, 04:14:48 PM
With friends like these...

The UN has stopped all aid shipments into Gaza because Hamas has stolen supplies twice this week.

Quote
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) announced Friday that it was suspending all import of aid into the Gaza Strip because Hamas had seized the supplies for the second time this week.  According to the agency's press release the recent looting involved hundreds of tons of food. "During the night of February fifth 10 truckloads of flour and rice were taken from the Palestinian side of the Kerem Shalom Crossing into Gaza," the statement from spokesman Christopher Gunness said.  He said the food "had been imported from Egypt for collection by UNRWA today," but was "taken away by trucks contracted by the Ministry of Social Affairs." The ministry is run by Hamas.

Fatah isn't too happy about it either.

Quote
Fatah on Friday condemned allegations against Hamas that the Islamic movement had seized a United Nations aid shipment bound for Gaza, according to a statement.  According to Barakat Al-Farra, a Fatah official, forces affiliated with Hamas attacked a convoy of humanitarian aid from the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) on Thursday.
...
Farra condemned the alleged actions by Hamas, while praising UNRWA’s “decades-long” commitment to Palestinian refugees in Gaza and the West Bank. He applauded UNRWA’s actions in Gaza during Israel’s three-week assault there, as well, particularly the “bold statements” they made against Israel’s “crimes” during the war.  “We previously warned [Hamas] and called on them to stop any attack against UNRWA,” Farra said.  “We had previously tried to stop this problem, but it seems nothing has changed—in fact, the problem has worsened,” he added. “How does Hamas ask for a larger role in the reconstruction of Gaza? How can they who steal food and support donated for our people be considered reliable?” Farra asked.

The bar I used to frequent in Lubbock had 6 coin-op bar tables.  We noticed one night that the balls were all screwed up.  So we put in coins to all the tables to get the balls out so we could straighten out the setup.  Somehow we would up with eight 2's, 7 of a couple others, and short on some other balls.  Who the hell smuggles extra balls into a bar and steals others?

I compare playing pool on a space-table to playing quoits on composite boards.  While composite boards are designed to play similar to real slate, they still aren't the real thing, and there are little things about playing on slate like the sound, how the quoits stick to the boards, etc, that can never be re-created with any other material.  While composite plays like slate, it doesn't play as slate.  Hence why I will be having true slate boards shipped to me in Arizona.  While composite might be cheaper and easier to ship, it just doesn't quite play like real slate, no matter how well they may have been engineered.

Shee-oot, out here in Texas we just play washer pitchin'.  And the wiki says that the original hobs were set in clay for quoits.

SKUs announced

Quote
Microsoft has officially announced the five versions of Windows 7 it will sell at launch within the United States, together with a version specifically designed for low-cost netbooks.  The five versions available for U.S. customers will be:
  • Windows 7 Starter
  • Windows 7 Home Premium
  • Windows 7 Professional
  • Windows 7 Enterprise
  • Windows 7 Ultimate
But Microsoft will only sell Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional at retail, in a bid to eliminate some of the confusion caused by a plethora of Windows Vista versions.  A sixth version, Windows 7 Home Basic, will only be sold in emerging markets, Microsoft said.
...
And that means that a single version – Home Premium – will be offered to consumers, with a separate version – Professional – offered to businesses. Both the Home Professional and Business SKUs will contain discrete features that aren't overlapped to the other.
...
Windows 7 Ultimate Edition, meanwhile, won't be sold directly to consumers. Instead, Windows 7 Ultimate will be an upgrade offered only as an add-on, which also means that consumers will be forced to pay for Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Professional, and then pay again for the upgrade.

The glass forms the element that the slate normaly does.  Supposedly the surface is a resin that duplicates the feel and consistency of felt.  If it indeed does its job well enough, it would also have some impact resistance to preserve the underlying glass/slate.

NFL Digest of Rules

Protection of Passer

Quote
By interpretation, a pass begins when the passer -- with possession of ball -- starts to bring his hand forward. If ball strikes ground after this action has begun, play is ruled an incomplete pass. If passer loses control of ball prior to his bringing his hand forward, play is ruled a fumble.

When a passer is holding the ball to pass it forward, any intentional movement forward of his arm starts a forward pass. If a defensive player contacts the passer or the ball after forward movement begins, and the ball leaves the passer’s hand, a forward pass is ruled, regardless of where the ball strikes the ground or a player.

Hospitals with better IT have fewer deaths, study shows

Quote
The study, involving more than 167,000 patients in 41 hospitals, also showed that better IT lowered costs.

According to an abstract of the study, published in the Jan. 26 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, "hospitals with automated notes and records, order entry, and clinical decision support had fewer complications, lower mortality rates, and lower costs."
...
Comparing in-patient death rates, medical complications, length-of-stay and costs, the study showed that hospitals with the greatest level of automation saved up to $1,729 per patient for procedures such as coronary artery bypass grafting.
...
The study looked at four common medical conditions and how technology was used to automate the treatment process. Those conditions included heart attacks, congestive heart failure, coronary artery bypass grafting and pneumonia.  The survey tool measured automation in four areas that would normally be paper based: physician notes and patient records; lab test results; physician order entry; and decision support. The survey also asked doctors about how effective and easy the systems are to use.

The level of IT was rated on a 100-point scale, with zero being the lowest possible score.  A 10-point increase in the automation of medical notes and patient records was associated with a 15% decrease in deaths, the study showed. Hospitals with that level of technology had a 1.4% patient mortality rate compared with a 1.9% among hospitals with the lowest level of automation. "This would suggest that for every 1,000 patients, five [or] fewer patients die at hospitals with the highest notes and records scores," the study said.

Shaming bad drivers

Quote
Mr. Vanderbilt points to a website, Platewire, that’s trying to shame drivers across America into better behavior by posting license plates of people who break laws and drive rudely. Platewire’s founder, Mark Buckman, a commuter in northern Virginia, explains his mission:

Quote
It has become an all too common fact that the only time people straighten up and drive safe is when there is a police car near by; a prime example of a society driven by fear. Adopting that same mentality, PlateWire intends to grow large enough to become a real deterrent to unsafe driving habits. My goal is to bring awareness to bad drivers so they become aware of the dangers associated with the aggressive driving they have become accustomed to. So join in, vent your rage, and let us all do our part to make the roads safer.

Thus, thanks to Platewire, you can see the license plate of a white Ford Ford in the Bronx on Saturday whose driver was accused of nearly hitting someone else.

The picture of the driver might be crossing the line, but apparently the plate is not an issue.
