According to Wiki, the bot is named Gerty and is voiced by Kevin Spacey.

"The film pays homage to the films of Jones's youth, such as Silent Running (1972), Alien (1979) and Outland (1981)."

And I'm in.

It's not a penalty.  You want a new phone, pay the full price.  You signed a contract to get a discount.  You honestly don't have to sign a contract (you do have to agree to the terms of service), they just won't discount the phone.  But sweet merciful crap, IT'S NOT A GORRAM PENALTY!

You can go directly to Motorola or Nokia and buy phones directly from them, some that aren't even offered through the carriers.  AT&T stopped extending contracts for price plan changes over two years ago.  A discount on the phone is now the only reason the contract will be extended.

Apple's rules as to the contract may be different since I've left the company, but every other mfg phone is available at retail.  Hell, my team was responsible for taking the orders from customers over the phone in Customer Care.  Full retail was ALWAYS an option.

You guys do know that 3G owners can get the lower price if they wait a while, yes?

Or simply wait another year until to buy the new new version which will be shiny and alluring and have all the 3GS owners complaining about being punished for their loyalty.

This is my likely tack.  Either that, or getting the phone that makes your puny little iPhones and Pre-s cry for their mommies.

Casio tested the Exilim Mobile using the Revision F test series, one revision behind the G series currently in use. Casio lists eight tests to which the Exilim was subjected. The Water Resistance test aims to replicate the effect of being stuck in a 4"-per-hour rainstorm with 30mph winds. The Immersion test dunks the handset in a meter of water for half an hour. The Humidity test replicates 95% humidity for ten days with temperatures ranging from 86 to 149 degrees. [They tested in Nebraska in July, you say?]

Salt Fog tests keep the handset in a 48-hour mist of saline and water. The Drop test, from four feet up, involves concrete, plywood, steel and 26 gravity-facilitated introductions to same. The Vibration test straps the handset to an electrodynamic shaker and lets loose along the x axis, then y, then z. (The new Revision G tests do all three axes at once.) Dust Resistance testing took place at 95 degrees and within a cloud of "silica flour," which many servicemen will claim comes directly from the mess hall. And Solar Radiation testing involves shooting the handset into the sun blasting the handset with three days of temperatures between 90 and 120 degrees and solar intensities of 1120 watts per square meter.
For civilian purposes, from what we can tell from the product information the phone's got plenty of charm (albeit a rather, well, camera-shaped form factor) -- browser, GPS, a 2.3" LCD, and of course the 5 Mpx camera with 3x optical zoom. The camera also does video and visual voice mail -- and just in case, you can do all that in the middle of a desert sandstorm, or from within a bank of salt fog.

The Grand Slam mode gives you a number of practice games and chances to earn a legend's skill (they give you one for free which is cool), before dumping you into the tournament.  The bad news is instead of playing some nobody in the first round, I end up against John McEnroe.  WTF is up with that?  I have no idea how they generate the tournament but sending you in your first real match against an old school legend just seems odd and misplaced.

Even the pros have to crush someone in the opening rounds.  I'm not sure on tennis tournaments, but look at the NCAA brackets.  Top seeds get to stomp on the lowest seeds in the first round.

Buy a freaking package already.  I pay $5 for 200 a month.  That's $0.025/message when used to its full extent.  If you use 34 sent and received, you've just saved money over the pay-per-use price.

The math kind of breaks down when you get to the Unlimited package for $20.

Ultimately these kinds of policies only hurt the companies that continue them.  I have brought in at least 5 people I know of to the iPhone, and at least 10 more are keenly aware of it because of me.  Insignificant numbers, I realize, but every bit counts in a competitive arena like this.  I am a walking talking posting advertisement/demo for Apple (and by default AT&T) - and one should never underestimate the power of word of mouth.  I am not saying they "owe" me something special, but irritating your most dedicated fanbase seems like a poor strategy for the long haul.
As for me, I'm still at this moment a whore for Apple and AT&T's bitch.  But I will say this, any sense of brand/service loyalty I felt for either of them is gone, and I won't hesitate to jump ship (including early termination or whatever it takes) when something better comes along.

Have you heard of the referral program?  $25 a person that you refer for up to 5 people per year.

7589  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / [NC] Slim Jim plant explosion on: June 09, 2009, 08:58:43 PM

Three people were missing and 20 taken to hospitals after an explosion at a Slim Jim meat products plant in North Carolina, officials said Tuesday.

Jeffrey Hammerstein, district chief with Wake County Emergency Medical Services, said five injured people were tagged as priority patients with serious conditions. Hammerstein said officials were searching for three people missing from the site in Garner, a Raleigh suburb, but it wasn't clear whether they were inside during the explosion.

About 300 people were in the plant, said ConAgra spokesman Dave Jackson.

Garner Mayor Ronnie Williams said injuries ranged from burns to smoke inhalation. Emergency crews were keeping people away because of concerns about the smell of ammonia.  "There is a toxic cloud on and about the plant," Williams said.

Officials said at a news conference that firefighters were still trying to contain a small fire and an ammonia leak.

Chrysler Guarantees Rejected Dealers Place for Autos

Chrysler LLC, planning to shed 25 percent of its dealers, guaranteed those losing their franchises that it will find others to take their unsold vehicles and extended a deadline to transfer the cars and trucks.

Dealers slated to be eliminated are protesting rejection of their contracts in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York today. The company will give the 789 dealers being rejected until June 15 to sign paperwork that lets them transfer vehicles to others that will keep operating, Chrysler lawyer Kevyn Orr said in court. That deadline had been today.

“We are now close enough to guarantee that we will redistribute 100 percent of the affected inventory,” Steven Landry, Chrysler’s executive vice president for North American sales, said in a note to rejected dealers on June 5.
Landry said in his June 5 note that as of that date Chrysler had found dealers willing to purchase all but 400 vehicles from the rejected franchises and would be able to find homes for the rest by today.

And the griping begins...   Roll Eyes

AT&T's iPhone subscribers are urging AT&T to reconsider its upgrade policies to allow owners of 3G iPhones to upgrade to the new iPhone 3G S model at the discounted price offered to new customers and subscribers eligible for subsidized upgrades.
AT&T subscribers with an iPhone 3G who are not eligible for an upgrade -- those not near the end of their two-year contracts -- can still upgrade to an iPhone 3G S, but must pay $200 more -- $399 for the 16GB model and $499 for the 32GB model.
"This is ridiculous and slap in the face to long time loyal iPhone customers like me who switched from T-Mobile and the only reason was the iPhone," writes another unhappy iPhone customer. "We have to mount a vigorous campaign to change this policy. Call your local AT&T and ask for the manager and complain. Send e-mails and post in forums everywhere."

Nevermind that the 3G version was half the price of the original version.  Can you imagine if customers in the car industry worked this way?  It's having to explain things like this to customers that really got to me when I was an AT&T rep/manager.

"What we're trying to do is to be fair," said AT&T spokesperson Mark Siegel. "Customers in the U.S. enjoy very, very low device prices. The financial models of wireless are built on that. If you want to change your device in midstream, we want to help you do that, but you have to look at the economic realities."
