It doesn't appear to be an issue.

Shaming bad drivers

Quote
Mr. Vanderbilt points to a website, Platewire, that’s trying to shame drivers across America into better behavior by posting license plates of people who break laws and drive rudely. Platewire’s founder, Mark Buckman, a commuter in northern Virginia, explains his mission:

Quote
It has become an all too common fact that the only time people straighten up and drive safe is when there is a police car near by; a prime example of a society driven by fear. Adopting that same mentality, PlateWire intends to grow large enough to become a real deterrent to unsafe driving habits. My goal is to bring awareness to bad drivers so they become aware of the dangers associated with the aggressive driving they have become accustomed to. So join in, vent your rage, and let us all do our part to make the roads safer.

Thus, thanks to Platewire, you can see the license plate of a white Ford Ford in the Bronx on Saturday whose driver was accused of nearly hitting someone else.

The picture of the driver might be crossing the line, but apparently the plate is not an issue.

From the sound of it at the moment, the family wants nothing to do with the media attention.  The grandfather was interviewed, gave only his first name, and flat told the media that they would never find their house.  Which is a challenge to them.  I give them a week before her yearbook picture is on TV.

Thousands of Canadian Tamils formed a human chain through Toronto's downtown on Friday to protest a Sri Lankan government offensive aimed at crushing the separatist Tamil Tigers.

The greater Toronto area is home to more than 200,000 Tamils, one of the largest Tamil populations outside the Indian subcontinent, and a number of protests have been staged here in recent weeks.  On Friday, protesters formed a human chain spanning several miles of major downtown streets to protest the military offensive, which has ousted the rebels from all major towns following heavy battles in recent months.
...
The Tamil Tigers have been fighting for a separate state for minority Tamils since 1983, and were declared a terrorist organization by the U.S. in 1997 and by Canada in 2006.

From my experience, it's mounted on the hull of the tank rather than the turret, so it's possible with driving experience to cover two arcs.  You can hold the turret steady while sweeping an area as you manuever the tank body.  But it's been a while since I used it, so I may be off base.

Sorry to hear about your problems.

I have taken the tack, especially with their pimping of gamer pictures and the like that if they can't be bothered to show me what they look like before I purchase them, I can't be bothered to purchase them.  All of my purchases have been XBLA games or Rock Band content.  I don't rent the movies because that is what my Netflix has.  And having 0 points available sure makes it easy to resist any impulse purchases.  That may be why I haven't given them any money on over two months.

That being said, I put in three years in cell phone customer service where we dealt with returns of those stupid ringtone subscriptions and our customer service was decent about taking care of the refund, stopping the recurrence, and educating the customer.  And yes, we had our customers over more of a barrel, as they had 2 year contracts with us.  We still did our best to take care of them to the best of our ability.

7457  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Fannie Mae Contractor Indicted For Logic Bomb on: January 30, 2009, 04:05:39 PM
Information Week

Quote
It was mere chance that a senior Unix engineer with Fannie Mae discovered a logic bomb.  The logic bomb, a malicious script designed to wipe Fannie Mae's 4,000 servers, was allegedly placed by Rajendrasinh Makwana, an IT contractor who worked in Fannie Mae's Urbana, Md., facility. It was set to execute on Jan. 31. Had it done so, Fannie Mae engineers expect it would have caused millions of dollars in damage and possibly shut down the government-sponsored mortgage lender for a week.
...
According to the affidavit of FBI special agent Jessica Nye, the Unix engineer who found the malicious script, identified only as SK, did so by accident. "The malicious script was at the bottom of the legitimate script, separated by approximately one page of blank lines, apparently in an effort to hide the malicious script within the legitimate script," the affidavit states.

The discovery occurred on Oct. 29. Makwana had been terminated as a Fannie Mae contractor on Oct. 24, around 1 or 1:30 p.m., the affidavit says, but his network access was not terminated until late that evening. Makwana was fired for allegedly creating a computer script earlier that month that changed server settings without the permission of his supervisor.

Makwana was not required to turn in his badge or Fannie Mae-supplied laptop until the end of the day on Oct. 24. According to Nye's affidavit, it was during that afternoon that Makwana is alleged to have planted the malicious script.

Sounds like the perfect project for a stimulus package.  We got the government checkbook out, let's incentivize the production so that the companies can build it on the country's dime and make the money off of the service contracts.  Economic stimulus and new jobs.

I won't weigh in on that, but I will say that this has been a monthly event since October.  And since this one will be as late January as it can be, it shouldn't be a few more weeks before we get the February one.  If you decide to stay out, it won't be missing your one shot at meeting some of the DFW members.

Get DARPA involved and start laying fatter pipes.  Throttling is a holding action that will not solve any long-term problems.  Internet usage is only going to get higher, not contract.

And mobile ISPs still have to interface with the wired networks anyway, just like cell calls get routed through the POTS once they hit your local tower.

I agree with The Grue.  When you get to hard, there are songs where it is not tenable to be bridging to orange with your pinky, as it is easier to shift up with the strength of your index finger than overworking the pinky.
7474  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Pet Allergy Tests? on: January 29, 2009, 04:28:23 PM
Myself, I am allergic to cats at a level of 3 out of 4 based on their scale.  I was never tested for dogs, but my reactions lead me to believe that my level with them is 1.  I can be around dogs and even play with them, but I need to wash my hands immediately thereafter, as any contact with my eyes afterwards will not result in a pleasant experience.

And as for just testing it, again, allergic reactions take time to develop.  Just sticking your face in varios dog furs isn't going to give you the information that you would need.

Scratch test, which its own brand of hell.  She gets to lay face down on a exam bed while the techs deliberately scratch her back in about 20-30 places and put all the local allergens on her back.  You then get to sit there while the body does its thing, not moving, while the itching begins, and you can do nothing about it.  Then, some maddening time later, they come back in and write down all the numbers of how badly inflammed each location got.  They will provide some cream for afterwards to stop the tortuer, and you will be good for sympathy points to wash her back off when you get home.
