7442  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: I scored a Job Interview. Now what? on: June 19, 2009, 03:43:58 AM
Over dress.  You want to be in a suit if possible.  Always look better than the people that are talking to you.  Don't be afraid to ask for a moment to gather your thought if a question takes you by surprise.  Research job interview questions so you have an idea what will be asked.  Look at the behavior-based interviews, as they are becoming more prevalent than skill-based interviews.  Skills can be taught.  Showing poor behavioral skills will get you round-filed quicker than not knowing every last detail of the job.

The geohashing might be more your speed, then, Grue.  There is no anticipating the location, it changes every day, and adds the element of meeting people if you are in an active graticule.
7446  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Let's talk Iphone on: June 18, 2009, 10:08:10 PM
To summarize a discussion that I had with a co-worker who just got a Pre as his first smart phone:

It's easy to look at it before you purchase a device and say that you don't need it.  It's another thing that after you see all that you can do with it, even after his week and a half, that you no longer want to live without it.  The maps, the GPS, the instant internet access, the quick little games, the reading material, all in the device that you'd be carrying as a phone anyway, makes it become, if not essential, then highly desired in a very short period of time.

Now I don't need a $200 GPS unit for my car.  I don't need a separate MP3 player.  I don't need a Nintendo DS or PSP.  I don't even need a laptop for entertainment purposes.  (If I travelled more for work, that would be a different story.)  I don't need to carry a book with me if I'm going to be stuck somewhere for a while.  I have all of this in something slightly bigger than my old flip phone.

You say $70-80, but you're probably already paying half of that for your current phone service.  It's $30 for the data plan and $5 for my text 200.  I would be paying the $40 for the phone anyway.

Last month, my bill showed my iPhone usage at 1.5 GB.  That usually includes 20-30 hours of Pandora usage during my work week.  I'm paying $1 a day for an average of 50 MB of data transfer.  To me, it is MORE than worth it.

7449  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Star Trek TOS on: June 18, 2009, 09:21:29 PM
That might have something to do with:

All live-action footage was scanned in high definition from its first generation 35 mm film elements, while visual effects shots have been digitally reproduced. As noted in the "making of" DVD feature, first generation "original camera negatives" were used for all live-action footage but not for external shots of the ship and planets, etc.

35mm is film-quality stock.  The series looks really sharp in 1080p.

If you can drop the shields of the convoy and disable them, you can leave them until you deal with the gunboats.  It's much quicker to disable a ship than pound through the hull, iirc.

But your dongle is treated as a separate line. Your situation is different than someone using another type of PDA to tether to their laptop.
7452  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Let's talk Iphone on: June 18, 2009, 08:40:34 PM
Since AT&T hasn't officially announced it, a bit of leeway might be in order.  It might actually be $55 for data/tethering.  Until it's officially announced, everything is subject to change.

As for cases, I spent $30 on a neoprene case with a belt clip and a straps to thread an included velcro armband through.  Worth the cost to prevent the near-heart attack after I dropped it on the sidewalk while jogging one night.
7453  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Anyone Geocaching? on: June 18, 2009, 08:27:53 PM
I haven't, but the idea appeals to me.  You might also look at geohashing.

It's $60 with any other PDA with a 5 GB limit.  That would be cheaper than doing it with a Palm or HTC device.

What were you expecting?

In related news, the Security Minister that was helping fight the Islamist  insurgents there was killed by a large bomb.

Mr Aden had recently moved to Beledweyne, a town close to the Ethiopian border, in an effort to stop Islamist insurgents gaining more ground in Somalia, the BBC's Will Ross in Nairobi says.

Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed told a news conference in Mogadishu: "As you see this country was invaded by terrorists who do not allow for the existence of the Somali national flag, its sovereignty and any peace to this country.

It doesn't sound like the Islamist extremists are very interested in Libertarian ideals.

Drop the shields and use the ion cannons.  Much quicker to disable than destroy.

On a side note, a friend of mine used to take out Star Destroyers in the original X-Wing.  He would take down the two globes, disable the SD, take out the ENTIRE complement of TIE Fighters on board, and then destroy the SD at his leisure.

In industry terms, ARPU: Average revenue per user.

From my (possibly faulty) recollection, most people that had even middling profitability usually were eligible 21 months into a 24 month contract on any plan.  Higher ARPU meant even earlier.  With family plans, that would mean that the "primary" line would get upgrade approval earlier than subordinate family lines.

My past cleanup days were performed with a plastic mini-rake and a brown paper bag for dropping it in.  No close contact required.

Mind you, this was back yard cleanup and was done every few days rather than immediately afterward.

I spent a year and a half fielding requests for early upgrade.  Personally, if you were within 30 days, it was a rubber stamp.  A good story got you 60 days.  A great story would get you 90 days.  I apparently was low-balling what some people would do, because upper management came down on us with a freaking hammer before letting up a little because it was early-upgrade-a-looza for my co-workers.

The carriers do not expect your loyalty.  They are that paranoid girlfriend that is so convinced that you are going to leave them for the next hot piece of hardware that comes along, that they will stick to those contracts as much as possible to keep you from leaving, even if it means that it drives you away eventually.

Sigh...It's been a bad year for me with every technology purchase I've made this year being ruined by a newer, better model being released a few months later.

What makes you think this problem is limited to this year?

Once I make a purchase, I embargo any news about said purchase after the return period is up.  I don't want to hear that the price dropped, that the newer model is 50 times niftier and cheaper to boot, or that my model is prone to explosive disintegration.  I do everything in my power to avoid buyer's remorse.

Of course, that means that I have to re-learn everything every time I want to upgrade my PC...

The LOTRO demo did nothing for me.  And after an ill-advised one-month sub, I dropped EVE as well.  If skill training is automatic, all I need to do is log in and update my skill queue until I'm as nifty as I want to be.  While it sounds good in theory, there's no point to actually play for the first few months once you can afford the skill books that you want...

I'm a IE-only web developer, wo without A PC is not possible.

Without MY PC? Not possible either.  I'm not tied to e-mail , I rarely check it.  But losing the boards would be intolerable.  If I had something approaching a social life, it might be more manageable, but that's not currently the case.
