Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Energy prices and the selling of my truck

My brother-in-law just bought one of those 4 door Jeep Wranglers, saying they offered him a deal too good to pass up. I bet his commute is 55 miles roundtrip. Hope he enjoys it. Ouch. I wouldn't drive something like that 55 miles a day if someone gave it to me! Are you considering a used motorcycle? I'm just thinking about how to get great MPG as cheap as possible. Buy only how much motorcycle you need - not one of those with a small car engine beneath the seat I'd probably be happy with one of the smaller bikes. I'm 5'8", so something small and agile like a Honda Rebel would be perfect for my commute. The 250cc gives me enough power and allow me time to get my riding skills up. There's a huge market for used Rebels, so there's no reason I can't find one when I'm ready and then in a few years, trade up if that's what I want.

It's $4/gal today. Next week it'll be more, and a year from now it'll be really painful. The spiraling gas prices are not stopping anytime soon.
If you're a couple years away from buying another vehicle and will be buying new, the Chevy Volt may be out, and be even better at saving fuel than today's hybrids. Of course a couple years from now they'll be many other high MPG options too. It looks like cars are becoming like computers: you buy one now and in six months a better one (at MPG) comes out. It's about time. Too bad it took insane gas prices to kick the auto industry in the butt and get them moving.
Right. We're not quite at $4/gal here; it's been floating between $3.80-3.90, but we know prices will never go down. All it takes is one rough hurricane season in the Gulf of Mexico this year, and watch it spike to $5? $5.50? $6? At $6, my motorcycle purchase would be an absolute no-brainer, and would make a good transitional buy for me to hold off car payments as long as possible. There's a very tiny part of me that's happy to see gas prices going up...something to get the alternative fuel a good swift kick in the pants. Shame that it has to come about in this way though. My brother-in-law just bought one of those 4 door Jeep Wranglers, saying they offered him a deal too good to pass up. I bet his commute is 55 miles roundtrip. Hope he enjoys it.

I'm going to be in the market to buy a new car sometime in the next two years. Or at least as long as I can stand my 97 Jeep Wrangler's 19mpg and spending roughly $170/month at $4/gal. The wife still drives her 96 Saturn, so we've been spoiled the last few years with no car payments and reasonable gas prices. Her car still gets great mileage so we're not in any kind of real hurry to upgrade.
I've considered snapping up a motorcycle for my daily commutes, but I'd still need almost 2 years of that before I'd actually be saving money after the purchase price.
In the end, I know for sure we'll be buying one hybrid, and possibly two.

Amanda is afraid to take a stand and piss anyone off and is worthless as a result, just like last season. James doesn't have any game, he can't scheme or lie, just like last season.
Erik is just clueless, I think the shock of losing his man-crush has killed him.
It's the boneheaded decisions that have me yelling at the television, yet keeps me entertained and certain to continue watching. Ozzy flipping off the remaining survivors as he took his seat on the jury was a hoot.

Evil bitches indeed.
Since the immunity idol didn't get played, it gets yet another hiding spot. Since Natalie wasn't thinking when she selected Jayson to go into Exile, when the choice comes around this week, there'll be some better planning I bet.
While I hate seeing the girls being so smug about their maneuvering, I can't understand how the rest of the players are being so apathetic about it all. Natalie, Parvati and Cirie are playing to win, while the morons like James, and Amanda are content to let things happen. All Amanda or James or Erik had to do was tell Jayson that his stuff was being rummaged through, and that they found his idol, and go from there.
As it stands now, the girl group has to start thinking ahead. How long will it take before Parv and Cirie decide to turn the tables on Natalie? Or Natalie gets a scent of the betrayal and goes running to James/Amanda/Erik for help? Good times.
I've missed the past couple seasons of Survivor, but I think this may be the most entertained I've been since the very first one. The contestants actually have some personality, and with all the backstabbing, there's never a dull moment.

It looks like they're trying to eliminate a lot of the 'whack-a-mole' from the healer side of things. From the videos I've seen of the level 20 pvp weekend, the main healing class depends on an AoE heal and a cone-of-effect healing spell.
So, for the Priest of Mitra, it's all about positioning your allies so that they get hit by their cone of healing spell. There's no individual healing targeting. Not sure if that follows the Bear Shaman and Tempest of Set classes as well, but it shows Funcom is trying to switch things up a bit.

I think the MOST active one is OO's guild on Emerald Dream. that's an RP/PvP server. BWAHAHAHA!!! I can totally see them being the kind of things which dwell on RP servers. We simply joined that server because we thought there'd be less idiots, and by and large, that's the case. We wanted a PvP environment, and there happens to be a few RP guilds on there, or so they claim. Beyond that, I'm not sure what "kind of things" we are. I think he means you're a freak Ibby....but we already knew that QFT!

I think the pet attack speeds for hunters is a good change. I want to see a more varied collection of pets out there. Enough with the cats already.
And the decursive and clickheal nerfs? So what? If you're a healer and depend so completely on the Emergency Monitor, it's time to relearn the basics. Blizzard has said that from BC on, the decursing tasks that you currently see in MC and BWL won't be there anyway.

Those instructions look spot on. I hadn't realized the ISO image I burned doubled as an actual Live CD, so I was confused for a moment when I never saw any installation prompts. Why bother with Knoppix when I could use Ubuntu? Having root being disabled confused me at first, but since I'll be putting it on a home machine, the worst security problem I'll have is my 3 year old son closing windows when I'm not looking.
The machine I was trying to install it on has hardware problems, so I was never actually able to do anything more than tinker with it, but what I saw, I liked.

I'm pleased with Dallas picking up Willie Mitchell for Skoula and a prospect. the guy's a stud, but a free agent at the end of the year. Who knows where he'll sign next year. I consider it a good pickup.
Shit though...perhaps we can put him on the powerplay too. God damn we need some help with the man advantage. 22nd in the league ain't going to cut it in the playoffs.

"Wheel of Crap". "Temple of Elemental Crap". Come on, ToEE deserves more credit than to be paired with Wheel of Time like that. I'm merely repeating the title warning gave it. For what it's worth, Ibby lays claim to that creative title. Not that I disagree.... Hey, it is what it is.

Honestly? I barely made it through Book 1, decided the guy was a complete hack, and read all these threads with barely controlled incredulity.
Now, to be fair, I like all sorts of stupid books and mediocre authors. But this guy...long winded and dull comes to mind. I started reading this series before the publication of book 2. It was rather fresh at the time, and Jordan had this interesting way of hinting at all this backstory and history just waiting to be revealed. He's detailed oriented to a fault certainly, but outside the first boring 50 pages or so, had just enough carrot-on-a-stick to get me through. Now? It's trash.

Every now and then, I like to scroll through his Amazon reader comments with some sort of sadistic glee. When the general consensus across thousands of comments is 1 star, you know something's wrong.
Unlike Martin's books, which I love to go back and reread, and just got finished doing last month, I find the idea of rereading WoT just absolutely mentally revolting.

I give you Knife of Dreams to be released in October of this year. As much as I detest Jordan's work now, I will still read it. Having put many hours into these books, I might as well finish it out with these last couple of books. Maybe he'll be done in 6 years or so. Regardless, this will be the first WoT book I won't buy and will wait for my local library to get its copies. [/url]

8.0 huh? Having never used it myself, we have a number of 7.x machines that are rock solid, I heard there were lots of security issues with 8 upon release. Obviously there's no support for it now, but I wonder why they require that particular version...

You don't even need to install one if you don't want to. You can burn a copy of Knoppix onto a bootable CD. When you boot a machine with Knoppix, the OS runs under memory and will mount your drive(s) for access.
If you really do need to install one, Fedora Core v4 might work for you. It's Redhat's workstation OS. Installation is a snap. You can just leave everything at default.
I've used Mandrake and FreeBSD as well, but had more experience with Fedora.

On a P4 2.53ghz with 1GB of ram and a Ti4600, it was slower than a one legged dog. Ended up playing through at 1024x768 since 800x600 made the maps unreadable in game.
The most irritating performance issue for me was every now and then, my character would keep trying to go straight after trying to turn and change direction. Since my Ventrue was melee specific, it make hunting down some of the enemy guys a pain. I'd whip out my katana, and run for them, then run past them, THEN finally be able to turn around to give 'em a good whack.

I've ordered dozens of parts from Newegg over the years, and never had a ny problem shipping (but only used standard ground, never 1 day).
Hope you get your card soon. I'm getting ready to order a 6600GT as well. The price is just perfect, and will be replacing a venerable, but trusty, GF4 4600.
