1441  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Vampire worth getting? on: January 25, 2005, 08:11:31 PM
Quote from: "Arkon"
You know, I played Arcanum, loved it, encountered very few bugs.  I still play TOEE and have never had a single problem with it.  I have vampire and play it to death, have yet to encounter a bug and the performance is just fine, running at 1600x1200 max settings.  My machine is about a year old now, so not top of the line by any stretch of the imagination.

Is vampire perfect?  Far from it, and perhaps my opinion would be different if I encountered some of the bugs that others are having.

Now we know how Troika's test machines are configured.

Did anyone notice the comic book that Michael threw in the fire. Polar Bears and alien craft. Seems kinda wierd that polar bears would show up on the tropical island. And we still have no clue what the door or the hatch in the jungle is all about. Now the black pyramid. I hate now we have to go through more re-runs for the next couple of weeks.

Welcome seabourne!

Actually in one of the first episodes we say a flash of Walt reading that comic and what looked like a polar bear.  It wasn't until we saw the first polar bear about 7-8 episodes back that it raised questions.  Now that it happened a second time it really makes me wonder what the deal with Walt is.

God I hope there aren't any Teletubbies comic books on the island for Walt to find!

I was reading somewhere on the internet, that some Lost fans had found that exact comic book.  It was a Flash/Green Lantern team up where a previous Flash/GL had been duped by the government to capture an alien.  Said alien escapes and takes his original captors hostage and plans to destroy the Earth.  Modern Flash/GL team up to rescue the older models and save the planet.  Why did I write all that?  Linky.

Thanks for the welcome guys.  ITs great to be home again.  The ol ball and chain is happy that I am back from my journey.  We have been extremely busy since I got back.  I got a civilian job doing the same thing I did in the military at Lackland AFB, San Antonio Tx.  We are looking forward to some calm time together now!

Welcome back.  I thought you were Ammo?  They don't build bombs at Lackland.  Heck they didn't even have a runway until Kelly closed.  Does this mean you're an instructor now?  San Antonio's a fun place. Enjoy.

The industry has been trying to put together some kind of phone book for cell phones.  A couple of the major companies have opted out.  Even those that are in are having customers opt in.  And it's not done yet.  In short, there's no simple way to find it.  Your best bet is just to google them and hope they put it somewhere online.

EA has just proven that it's about... oh, say 1000000000000x smarter than Sega.

Its not 1000000000000x than Sega, it's 1000000000000x richer.

You mean to tell me Sega couldn't coerce ESPN to sign an exclusive deal prior to this?  Or that the deal was for just 2 years?  Either way, it was dumb.  Thinking the trademark was safe when EA is right there with teh big wallet is horrendously stupid.

gellar

I'd imagine the deal was longer than two years.  However, it's standard in those types of contracts that both sides have opt-out clauses at various points in the term of the contract.  The article makes it sound like ESPN exercised their opt-out after EA's exclusive NFL deal.  I don't think there's any indication of stupidity on Take 2/Sega's part.  They (logically?) assumed that EA couldn't justify spending $300-500 million to get the exclusive license.  Whoops.

I used to split my time b/t CG and OO, but since the evil IT admins put in websense, CG is blocked as a gaming site. So i mostly hang there now. Except for the 5 minutes i'm actually not at work!

Ooh.  Is my site big enough to be blocked? http://www.talkstrategy.com

On topic, I was here and comfortable before GG died.  I don't have much time to check in on one site, let alone two, but both seem friendly enough.  I'm sure there are cliques on both, but that shouldn't surprise anyone.

Sure it would have been nice if the whole GGF crowd could have stuck together.  It would have been nice if Rich had been able to keep updating GG.  It would have been nice if Joel never left or Bill didn't retire (move).  Time rolls on.

I'm just happy old GGFs have options to find some of what they enjoyed about GG.

Apparently the online lag problems have been patched. It's not the pain it used to be. <shrug> This info was from a buddy of mine who has it. It was fixed 3 weeks after release.

No.  It was never fixed for the vast majority of users.  It was designed around the Japanese broadband infrastructure.  Patches just weren't going to solve the problem.  They did resolve the "cloning" problem by the end of the summer.  It was too bad they had some great ideas in the online version.

1458  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Strategy Gamers Wanted (Help Needed) on: November 17, 2004, 07:52:42 PM
Hopefully this doesn't cross the line into "pimping my site" territory.

If you read my post in Off Topic, you'll know that my son was born 10 weeks premature.  My wife and I have been spending a lot of time at the hospital.  Fortunately, David is growing bigger and stronger each day and we hope to bring him home from the hospital around Thanksgiving.

So what does this have to do with PC gaming and strategy gaming?  Well, I run my little strategy gaming website pretty much by myself.  I've had several contributors, but no one has really been a regular.  I've found that works pretty well since most people like to help when they can, but know they don't have enough time to make long term committments to a website.  The short of it is, I could use some more contributors about now since my family duties are taking me away from the site.

I really believe in the concept behind Talk Strategy.  While it has a news section and some reviews, the heart is telling war stories from various strategy games.  That and discussing strategy and tactics for various games.  If you're interested in helping out,  check out the site (click on the website link in this post or in my profile).  Then contact me.

I like to look at it as a win/win.  If you're serious about writing about games, most sites (including CG, I'd imagine) like to see some of what you've written.  The more you have out there; the easier their evaluation is.  There are easy ways on the site to submit war stories, strategies, news and even mini reviews.  Larger articles can be handled by email.

The idea is to create a small community around a common interest.  I'd hate to see that set too far back because of time constraints.  I appreciate any help people can offer.  I also appreciate the support the Gone Gold and Console Gold communites have given me, my family and Talk Strategy.

Wow.

My wife Debbie and I were expecting our first child.  He was supposed to be born on the 5th of January next year.  Thursday, Debbie went into early labor.  They tried to stop it, but my son insisted on coming right then and there.  It was quite amazing watching the miracle happen.

David Wesley was born at 12:04 pm Thursday.  For only 30 weeks, he was huge at 4 lbs. 2oz. and 17 in long.  Fortunately the hospital here has a great neonatal unit.  He was rushed there and stablilized quickly.  They've already taken out most of the tubes.  He's doing very well and eating mother's milk (through a feeding tube for the time being).

Debbie is doing great.  She's already back home (though we both still practically live at the hospital).   She seemed 100% better yesterday when we both finally got to hold him for the first time.  We can't wait to take him home.  Originally, they told us Christmas, then they said Thanksgiving.  If he keeps getting stronger, it could be earlier.

I'm getting behind on my email so I thought I'd put this here to reach as many friends as possible at once.  All the kind thoughts and prayers are appreciated.   I'll try to post updates here and on my website for those interested.

I don't know about wiki, but Postnuke works well with 1and1.  It's on the news section of my site.  It manages news, links, downloads.  Users can submit all of those, but they have to be approved (and potentially edited) by an Admin.  You can even use pnPHPBB to add a forum.  It's pretty easy to install and tweak.  Heck, I figured it out (mostly).

I vowed never to go to Fry's (Houston) again on Black Friday.  They had some great deals, but the crowd was insane.  Less than 30 minutes after they opened, they had to stop letting people in due to fire code restrictions.  Then people had to wait until others left for an equal number to be let in.  Even with their 70+ cashiers, the check out line stretched several times the length of the store and wrapped all the way around to the back.  Imagine Disney World when the great new ride has mechanical problems.

Of course, the best deals were sold out before most people even made it into the store.  If you went, it was almost guaranteed to take up about half your Black Friday.  I think I'll stick to the internet.
1473  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / Trading System Ideas/ Feedback on: October 22, 2004, 08:02:58 PM
Back in the day, I used to use switchhouse before it died.  It was pretty handy.  Here are some of the features I liked:

Small, avatar sized cover photos for games lists.  It made scanning quicker if you knew what you were looking for.

Flexible searching (ie search only my tradable vs. my want or wants vs all my games or only with people with certain # of positive trades, or even just a search for a particular game, etc.)

The system had a built in proposal system so after a search, I could hit the propose trade button.  It would then bring up their tradable list and mine, I could check the boxes I was interested in and propose a trade.  It made multiples easier.  Then they'd get an email notifying them of a proposed trade.  They could accept, decline or propose a different trade.

Whenever someone's username was listed, it was a link to their profile/trading feedback.  Feedback included a numerical evaluation of the trade plus an optional text field.  Note you could only give feedback on accepted and completed trades.

Once a trade was accepted, the system automatically sent out emails to each party reminding them what they agreed to and providing the appropriate mailing address.  Note, the only way to get someone's mailing address was to successfully negotiate a trade with them.  Though I didn't use it, the email also included a link to printable mailing label you could use for the trade.

After the trade was accepted, the games traded were removed from the individual's library.  They were sort of held in limbo.  In your pending trades section, you would push the "trade shipped" button when you shipped off the package.  As I recall, they didn't have a pull down menu where you could choose the method you shipped it or a box to add a confirmation number, but that would be nice.  The system would automatically email the other party letting you know the trade had shipped.  After, I think it was a week, the system would send you a reminder email asking if you'd received the package.  When you clicked "package received", you'd go to the trade screen and verify you received everything they promised.  Once you did, the games would be automatically added to your collection.  Then it took you to the feedback section.

You had a default option when games were added to your collection.  You could choose to have them automatically as available for trade or just added to your library.  Of course, it was easy to check/uncheck the box, but if you liked turning over your library, the default option was nice.

It was a great system especially for the time.  Too bad they never figured out how to make money with it without driving their users away.  I hope that helps.  It was probably a little rambling, so feel free to contact me with any questions.

I'm sorry I wasn't clear.  I have office and the MDI tool.  I can create MDI files.  I was curious if anyone could read them.   I mean if I put a PDF up on the web, I'm pretty sure most anyone can read it.    It seems like M$ designed the MDI format to compete with PDF, but if they don't put out a free reader, it's pretty useless.

Why would I buy Acrobat if I have office and can just make MDI files.  Well, I would if no one can read MDI files.

The compression seems comparable to PDF.   If I print a forum thread to it, for example, one was about 143k.  However, if no one can use it in that form and I have to convert it to TIF (the only other option in Imaging), it balloons up to 14.5 MB.  That's not web friendly.  Neither is creating proprietary formats.

I can also verify that Bob (here) = BobM (GG).

I can't verify if he's hotter than Driver or not.

You forgot to mention Andy's favorite feature: a random map generator.

Sorry, that was kind of a running joke at GG:

Someone: Cool new strat game out, check it out...

Andy: Does it have a random map generator, if so that an instant buy for me.

I guess .MDI is M$ answer to the PDF.  Do they have a free reader out there?  Does anyone use that format?  It's kind of handy for archiving web pages and stuff, but less so if no one uses it.

Any thoughts?
