I suppose I might theoretically play it again, but I really don't find much enjoyment in playing the evil side.  Since they kind of gave up on the distinction between closed fist and evil, I figure it's better to let someone else experience this game.

Here's my trade list

I'm open to offers or bigger trades.

I mean if the sequel to Starcraft: Ghost was called Starcraft 2 and remained a console only stealth action game, there'd be blood in the streets.

Some use eXperiment as the third, either way it refers to building up your resourses and technology.  The rest are easy to understand.

Galciv 2 is coming.  You can get in the beta now.

If you want something different Star Chamber might be worth looking at.

I have a friend who has a PS2 purely for the SSX series.

I should have pointed it out, but you do need the network adapter to connect the hard drive and not all hard drives fit the network adapter (Western Digital being the primary culprit that doesn't fit).  It's possible to jury rig something that will allow any drive to fit, but it's usually easier to use a Maxtor or Seagate or something.

Btw.  Even though it's practically impossible to explain why, the quote in your sig is the best in the movie.  That's saying something given the great one liners.

You know what Jack Burton always says at a time like this.

I'm also sorry I can't help you.  In fact, I've been keeping an eye out for one myself.

Have you considered using Hd Loader?  It doesn't  work with the slimline PStwo and you do need a hard drive, but less risk of busting disks when you're not swapping them out all the time.  It's especially good for strategy games and games you play over and over.

I think any game you pick would be a hit honestly (well, with the exeption of "true" sports games, as the AAR's for them are relatively boring, even to me, a giganto sports fan.)

If you pick up a copy of Computer Gaming and look toward the back of it for the Tom vs Bruce article and read through it... you will totally get it, and see that most any "versus-type" game would work.

For me... old game, new game, wouldn't matter.  And I think it would be a riot if you guys did it.  Trust me, if you read the column to get an idea of how it's done, you would see the possibilities are endless.

I hope this gets adopted.  I have a quasi-friendship with Tom over e-mail, and he says the feedback they get for the article is extremely positive.

Edit:  Here is a link to a pretty old one, but you can at least get the gist of how it's done.

Tom vs. Bruce Example

LD

I must be a terrible publicist.  While I certainly wouldn't mind seeing more write ups like that here, I did create Talk Strategy to house all kinds of gaming stories including head to head battles.   I've written long columns on my site on why I believe strategy and tactical games make the best fodder for AAR's and story write ups, but to put it simply those are the games where you write the story.  Your commands and decisions dictate the course of events.  It's interesting to read about why you made each decisions often because it's not the reason I would have done it.

Talk Strategy was started off a similar discussion at Gone Gold.  I apologize if I've done a poor job getting the word out.  Please stop by and check it out.  You can click the WWW link below my sig.

Just for clarity, I would add that the Tom vs Bruce articles are in Computer Gaming World.  For obvious reasons, I think those types of articles and AAR's are a welcome addition to any site.

I don't think there's any differences in the dashboard.  Here's what it is on mine:

from Video (down) (A) (right) (A)

(B) (B) (power)

or starting from the main menu

(down) (down) (down) (A) to select settings

(down) (down) (down) (A) to select Video

(down) (A) (right) (A) to select no to 480p

(B) (B) (power)

Good luck.
1456  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / XBOX Connection Problem - stumped, please help! on: March 31, 2005, 06:52:59 AM
I think I see the problem.  I believe you only get the video mode options if you have the HD pack installed (component cables).  When you use the regular cables it just gives you the options for 480i.

You'll probably have to do it by "feel"  You'll have to know the button presses to get you to the video options.  480p will be the second choice, right under screen mode.  You'll have to turn it off.  Then hit B twice.  Then reboot the Xbox, and it should come up in 480i.  Hopefully with a little playing around you should get it.  Good luck.

When you have Xbox 2 plugged into the front  (Y,R,W or composite) and bring up the dashboard, what does it say under Settings, video?  There should be a bunch of No's there since you don't have a HDTV (i.e. normal, no , no, no).  If I had to guess, I'd say you have 480p turned on (i.e. normal, yes, no, no).   Since the other Xbox works fine with the component cables, it really can't be a bad cable.  There could be a bad pin on your 2nd Xbox's A/V connector, but that seems unlikely.

That was kind of my point.  If they had done a Phantom Dust (or Katamari Damacy)  and released at the budget price point, I think they could have had a surprise hit.  As it is, we'll probably all be picking it up after price drops.  There's just too much good stuff out there now.

I mean your own for fun and profit kind of thing. My site's mostly for fun, but I'd like to see it grow (and an actual profit wouldn't hurt either). I've been reading some of those "grow your website" columns. It appears that the biggest thing I'm doing wrong is I don't have enough sites linking to me.

I have a feeling that this one will get lost in the wash with all the big releases lately.  Anyone pick it up?  I keep feeling this would have been a great title to release at $39.99 or less.  With a fun group it sounds like a blast, but I guess that's true for most decent online games.  Still people have been clamoring for a new Powerstone.

You know I couldn't believe people piled on when BCR killed himself.  Depression is a dark, scary thing.  It makes people do things that they wouldn't otherwise do and act in ways they normally wouldn't.   Compared to some of the alternatives, shutting down a website doesn't seem that bad.  I sincerely hope and pray that Rich has recovered.  If and when Rich is fully healed (at least emotionally), it will be easier for him to venture out and make any needed apologies if he knows people out there understand.

I understand and forgive him.  Godspeed Rich and thank you for all you did.

I would say keep the accessory reviews very short and to the point.  You can always link to the product's home page rather than putting in a lot of filler.  Honestly, I don't need more than is it so good that I need to replace my current  mouse? or If I'm in the market for a mouse, is this one of the best available.

On hardware, you might consider a focus on "budget upgrades."  What $99 can I spend that will give me the most for my money, etc.  The new high end stuff gets covered to death, but if you could consistently point out sweet spot for GPU's, chipsets, hard drives, etc. that could be useful and not found everywhere else.

Star Wars: Rebellion hold the title for me. Stop laughing. Okay, I'll wait.

I liked Rebellion.  It was just heartbreaking compared to what it could have been.  The tactical battles just screamed for the ability for a small group of plucky rebel to be able to take on (or at least seriously hurt) a larger imperial fleet.  That just intensified the feeling that the end game was a joke.  I can't even recall a major set back once victory was in sight.  The early and middle game was great though.

Some of the reported problems with Starforce:

Slowed or disabled CD/DVD burning (plus more errors)

Disappearing Drives

Disabling Virtual Drive programs

Unable to play game with Virtual Drive programs installed

Note: I have not physically verified any of these problems myself.  Jeff Jones did do some timing tests on his computer that showed a marked slowdown in burning times with SF installed.

Additionally, there were reports based on SF promotional materials that it had "phone home" features available that would stealth scan system information and send it to the publisher.  However, no game has been found yet that implements such a "feature."

Slartibartfast:  (on Monitor) If you people can spare a moment from crashing into stars, I think you should know great things are afoot.

Zaphod:       I know, I'm on my fourth round right now.  Whee. (passes out)

Slartibartfast: So human, have you decided to donate your brain in the service of the universe yet?

Arthur:       What?

Eddie:        End transmission.  I'm sure that cleared everything up because I know I feel a lot better.  By the way, we'll crash into the sun in T minus ten minutes.  Isn't that exciting?

1476  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I'd hold off on buying any new portable machine anytime soon on: February 28, 2005, 11:56:10 PM
I love my cube, but it barely has 2 analog sticks.  I can't wait to see where they'd place a portable Z button.

I don't see too many developers supporting four formats, GBA, DS, PSP and EVO.  It would seem that the DS would lose out.  An announcement like that would seem to kill DS sales so you'd think they'd have to hold off as long as possible.  E3?

So we're talking disk drive, better screen and cube guts but keeping the price $99-150 and having better battery life than the PSP?  Right.

If it can directly play cube games, that means they can't repackage and resell them as EVO editions.  That doesn't make much sense either.

Although I could see Nintendo wanting to panic people into not buying a PSP, but that's not their usual MO.  Wait and see.

Isn't Iron Phoenix (xbox) inspired by Powerstone.  It's from Sammy who loves competing with Capcom.  I realize it's not PS2, but it is for Live which could be quite fun if a group from here got together.

Back on topic, I'm not going to rush out and buy an impossible game right now.  I'll happily pick it up in a trade later or buy it after a price drop.  I had heard that some of the play styles were supposed to make gameplay easier.  In other words, if you want it really hard, play Style Z. You'll be rewarded with the coolest moves, but you need the mad reflexes to pull it off.  Other styles have easier but fewer combos presumably making the challenge easier.

I have to say that making the save system less user friendly sounds like one of the worst game design decisions in recent history.
