1401  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Anyone get BF2 yet? on: June 24, 2005, 06:14:38 AM
As requested, I added a Battlefield 2 Forum to my website.  I look forward to some of the war stories and After Action Reports.  Please let me know if you need screenshots hosted.
1402  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / [Science] I'm sailing away. on: June 22, 2005, 01:22:25 PM
The theoretical problem with a solar sail has always been that there's nothing in space to use to tack.  In other words, the solar wind only lets you sail outwards.  You have to make it all the way to another star, use it to decelerate, then you can turn around and sail back.  Of course, the problem there is the huge distance between stars.

Some have suggested using chained hydrogen bombs to massively pump an atomic laser, but you'd need to already have it at your destination.  Hybrids could work, but you're stuck with the fuel problem.  Still, it's a very romantic notion.

Yeah, Conker on the 64 was great. Too bad it didn't get much love when it came out.

a good point...i think it came late enough in the N64's life that everyone was starting to focus on the next gen and didn't care as much.
You mean as opposed to now.

Well, I looked into it.  Server prices have shot up since I last checked, but that seems to be because of the hardware they're offering now.  I guess the new dedicated server software requires more juice than ever.  $150 - $400 per month would require a lot of people.  I don't know if even here combined with OO could make it worthwhile unless there's some wealthy benefactor lurking out there that we don't know about.  Per game servers are much cheaper.

Reverse the private and public things Tom...I know, it is weird, but I guess private is less expensive than public.

Here's the order page (Battlefield 2 is not offered yet)

Server Type (BF1942 and all mods...also BF: Vietnam):
Your server can be a public server or private server. Public servers cost $8.00 USD per slot and private servers cost $4.00 USD per slot.

And you're right...this is per month.  However, people could put a whole year of bills, $48, into the Paypal (or via check to Ron) at one time and Ron can keep track of who has paid and who hasn't.  I think most people would just pony up the 12 month idea, but that's me.

Wouldn't it be more cost effective to hire a generic game server from one of the clan hosting companies.  Then you could switch from game to game, keep the teamspeak/ventrillo server up and running, etc.  I haven't priced them recently, but I don't think they were crazy expensive.

"Free" in this case means to fileplanet subscribers. Linky

To be fair, they do say subscribers get it first.  Presumably that means that non subscribers will get it eventually.  It's something to keep an eye out for.

Silly me I thought the GeForce 5700 was a recommended card not the minimum.  Guess I won't be playing until I upgrade.  Well, I was going to do it sometime this summer.  Off to pricewatch.

Regardless, AAR hosting, Screenshot hosting and forum support offers still stand if interested.  Let me know.

Hey... maybe we can even right up some after action reports for Hrothgar's Talk Strategy site!

Would you want that type of stuff Hrothgar?

Heck... Turtle could even write it as the game is going on from his easy chair.  I can see it now, we're toiling away down there, capturing control points, scrambling for medkits, repairing downed choppers, stealthing from building to building, dodging incoming grenades, avoiding F-15 straffing runs, defibbing each other back from the grave...  All the while, our Commander is popping open another Samual Adams, opening another bag of chips, flipping through the local paper, and occasionally dropping a supply crate here and there.   Tongue

Of course I'd love some good reports.  If there's enough interest, I can even set up a team forum area and host screenshots.

I'll leave hosting the demo to the big boys like KD.
1414  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / Looking for Freespace 2 on: June 07, 2005, 04:27:23 PM
I believe it was on an Interplay board (although it could have been parallax).  If you check you'll find the same wording in the demo EULA.  Personally, I thought Starcraft had it right with the ability to spawn limited multiplayer sessions.  I wish every game had that, but you're right giving the whole game away to friends is too good to be true.  I can only imagine how that would have been interpreted back when dinosaurs walked the Earth and I was in college.

It was an error in the install script where they just copied the EULA text from the demo release.  But each to his own.  Some claim it's already abandonware and the point is moot especially with Interplay dead and buried.[/quote]

If you just want to play the game, and don't want the physical media, there is a clause in Freespace 2's EULA that says you can give a copy to your friends - no lie.  There's a screenshot of the EULA that pops up during installation floating around on the 'net, but my google-fu isn't up to the task today.
That EULA quote is from the demo.  Yes, you can give the demo to your friends as often as you want.  The actual game EULA during installation and in the manual read differently.

+1 to Crowley for a fast and personable trade.

He's very nice, knowledgable and accommodating.  Not at all what you'd expect from someone who's been banned.  Definitely recommended as a trader.

I'm not questioning the mods actions at all.  I fully respect their right to run their boards as they see fit.  I'm sure they acted appropriately.
1419  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo Revolution downloads free? on: June 05, 2005, 03:33:11 AM
In case you didn't read all the thread, kathode has it right.  Gamesradar basically misreported the Gamespot interview.

In short, what the Nintendo VP was saying was they won't charge to access the network like Live.  So downloadable content like demos or bonus levels would be free at least from Nintendo.

I have the finale on DVR and need to go back and look but wanted to offer up this question.

The white guy that Jin met in the bathroom at the airport and ended up was actually working for Jin's father-in-law.  I swear in the last scene while they were showing everyone take their seats on the plane that guy was also on the plane.

Yeah, I think that was him too, which makes sense since that's his job- to follow Jin around.   I guess that's part of the 'cliffhanger' too, us wondering if that was him, and if that means he's alive on the island. I figure he must be, since why would they bother to show him otherwise?

Well, it did show the significance of the watch and explained many of Jin's reactions.  It also clued us in that Sun wasn't the only one contemplating running away.

About the creature, even on the DVR, I couldn't see much.  What struck me most however, was the sound.  The strange sounds screamed steampunk to me.  Interesting.

1423  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Where did your online name come from? on: May 26, 2005, 02:34:06 AM
Hrothgar was one of my first successful pen and paper role playing characters from back in the early 80s.  He also ended up being one last fighter characters since I was the only one willing to play spellcasters so he held a special place in my memory.  He was named after the old king in Beowulf.  I've used the name online since my early Mudding days.

Umm.  Yes.  Sorry.  I had been watching gigs of video from E3 as well as reading the EGM Xbox 360 coverage.   I think my brain was starting to fry.

I voted R&R, but I can only imagine how little time it might take for one type of player to jump rooms to prey on the less serious types of players in order to increase his game stats and rankings.

Just guessing here, but I imagine that would be easy to prevent.  Just make it so every time you switch zones your ranking gets reset.  Then they'd have to decide if pumping up their stats/score was worth losing their ranking.

I'd also imagine that there would be no restriction against playing against your friends outside of your zone, but it wouldn't affect your ranking either way.  Obviously, Microsoft has a a lot to think about in how they implement this system.

I wonder how they are going to police the Family Zone?  Sounds like a hard thing to do.

I'd guess they're counting on L33t HaX0R kiddies not being willing to be caught dead in the Family area.

I wonder if they can impose the underground on cheaters.  One week Live suspension and permanent restriction to the underground zone.

I did like the idea that if you give someone negative feedback, the matching system won't put you two in the same game again (assuming it can be avoided).
1429  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / XBox 360 Live Zone Poll on: May 19, 2005, 09:05:57 PM
Borrowing the descriptions from Gamespy
Called "Gamerzones," each area will offer you different experiences. The Pro Zone is for those gamers who live for competition and don't take losing or cheating lightly, while the R&R Zone is the place to go if you just want to play some enjoyable, stress-free games. If you've got kids that play on Live, chances are good that you don't want them exposed to the general population. With this in mind, the team created a Family Zone where profanity and poor play aren't tolerated. Finally, there's the Underground Zone, where just about anything goes. Enter at your own risk!
emphasis added.

Though I might like to think of myself as hardcore, online I tend to like a more casual attitude towards gameplay.  I just want to have fun.  I guess I"m R&R.

1431  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / So where do you stand right now? on: May 17, 2005, 04:47:42 PM
I don't see myself paying more than $400 for a console.  If that means I'm waiting for price drops, so be it.  There are enough current gen titles coming out  that interest me (plus my backlog) to tide me over until then.  I'm sure eventually I'll pick up all three again.

I'm also going to have a real problem supporting consoles that think $70 is a good price point for games.  With Fry's and patience, I might be able to overlook that.

I do find it interesting that some of the same people on the Internet (note I'm not specifically talking about here) that hyped the Xbox because it was the most powerful and had the best feature set, are now saying, "it's all about the games, power won't make that much of a difference in this next generation," in their support of the Xbox 360.  Right.

Live is pretty cool, but let's face it neither Sony nor Nintendo had much of an online plan for the current generation.  That will change with the future generation.  I don't think we're really in a good position to judge the various online plans yet.

If I had to choose one, I'd go with the PS3 based on a potential PS2 like game library plus having the most power.  I'm not sold on the boomerang controller, but I'll reserve judgment until I feel one in my sweaty little palms.

The 360 would be a close second because of the proven online track record and their newly shown commitment to procuring quality exclusives.  Coming out first doesn't hurt either.  They mentioned it was wireless internet ready.  If it's wireless out of the box to match Sony (and perhaps Nintendo), it will be that much more tempting.

I have high hopes for the Revolution, but my fear of ending up in a gaming wasteland with a few brilliant gems and large stretches of nothingness holds me back.
1432  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Question about Xbox 360 connection to home network on: May 15, 2005, 03:55:09 AM
Do you have a media center PC?  I was under the impression that a media center PC is basicaly handling everything with Windows Media Player 9 with all the associated Digital Rights Management stuff that goes with it.  So if you can't convince it you have the rights, it won't play.
1433  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Just preordered the Xbox 360! on: May 14, 2005, 10:41:42 PM

1434  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Help me completely read my gaming manuals? on: May 14, 2005, 05:39:43 PM
A quick question:  Are you getting as much exercise as you used to?  When I was gaining weight (cause I was working too hard and didn't have time to work out, yeah, right), I noticed my attention span was getting shorter.  It started improving almost immediately once I got back in my workout routine.

On the flip side, if you're just looking for an excuse, many companies don't seem to spend the time and effort they used to on manuals.  The quality of writing has dropped quite a bit.  Of couse, that makes exceptions all the more enjoyable, but it's easy to get jaded.

1438  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Who all is excited about the big PS3 unveiling?! on: May 12, 2005, 10:13:29 PM
Let's see.  Microsoft has to get people interested now to build up to their launch in the fall.  If Sony is smart, they're sitting back taking notes on everything that works and everything that doesn't.  Sony just needs to officially announce the PS3 and a couple of big game titles to go with it.

Sony needs to make a big splash in the month before the 360 launches.  That's when they need to pull the eyes away from MS.   They did it pretty masterfully against Sega, but they have a tougher nut to crack this time.  I'm sure the amount of big announcements from Sony will probably be deafening around that time.  Their big goal is to create doubt.  They want people thinking, "Should I get a 360 or wait for the PS3."  If you can establish doubt, a lot of people will wait.  They don't have to stop people from buying the 360, they just can afford an insurmountable lead.

The more I think about it and the more I see it in print I'm really starting to like the name "Xbox 360".  It does seem to have impact and the number 360, at least in my brain, implies "large," "advanced," and "new."

Think about what the third iteration could be called:   Xbox 720 followed by the Xbox 1440.  I like it.  It's different and it isn't the boring old 1, 2, 3.... smile
See in my brain it implies spinning around without getting anywhere.  The only thing I like about it is that 360 degrees equals one revolution.  Cute little jab at Nintendo.  Of course, now that I think about it perhaps Xbox 365 would have been better.  Gaming for every day of the year and greater than a revolution.
