1401  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / LOST Season 1 Finale - Nice on: May 28, 2005, 06:46:27 AM

I have the finale on DVR and need to go back and look but wanted to offer up this question.

The white guy that Jin met in the bathroom at the airport and ended up was actually working for Jin's father-in-law.  I swear in the last scene while they were showing everyone take their seats on the plane that guy was also on the plane.

Yeah, I think that was him too, which makes sense since that's his job- to follow Jin around.   I guess that's part of the 'cliffhanger' too, us wondering if that was him, and if that means he's alive on the island. I figure he must be, since why would they bother to show him otherwise?

Well, it did show the significance of the watch and explained many of Jin's reactions.  It also clued us in that Sun wasn't the only one contemplating running away.

About the creature, even on the DVR, I couldn't see much.  What struck me most however, was the sound.  The strange sounds screamed steampunk to me.  Interesting.
1402  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / What's your home page? on: May 27, 2005, 03:35:21 AM
Well it used to be Talk Strategy but then I realized I spent more time in a browser working on Talk Strategy News so that's where it points now.

Of course, I wish someone other than me had it as their home page.
1403  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Where did your online name come from? on: May 26, 2005, 02:34:06 AM
Hrothgar was one of my first successful pen and paper role playing characters from back in the early 80s.  He also ended up being one last fighter characters since I was the only one willing to play spellcasters so he held a special place in my memory.  He was named after the old king in Beowulf.  I've used the name online since my early Mudding days.

How is news from the internet outdated over that of a published magazine?

I think he meant, "Here is some interesting, but perhaps outdated news: the new EGM has an article...."

In other words, the EGM article is interesting but outdated, not the reports coming out of E3.

-Autistic Angel
Umm.  Yes.  Sorry.  I had been watching gigs of video from E3 as well as reading the EGM Xbox 360 coverage.   I think my brain was starting to fry.

Interesting but perhaps outdated news.  The new EGM has an article on the Xbox 360.  They definitively state the 360 won't be backwards compatible.  I wonder who told them that?

I voted R&R, but I can only imagine how little time it might take for one type of player to jump rooms to prey on the less serious types of players in order to increase his game stats and rankings.

Just guessing here, but I imagine that would be easy to prevent.  Just make it so every time you switch zones your ranking gets reset.  Then they'd have to decide if pumping up their stats/score was worth losing their ranking.

I'd also imagine that there would be no restriction against playing against your friends outside of your zone, but it wouldn't affect your ranking either way.  Obviously, Microsoft has a a lot to think about in how they implement this system.

I wonder how they are going to police the Family Zone?  Sounds like a hard thing to do.

I'd guess they're counting on L33t HaX0R kiddies not being willing to be caught dead in the Family area.

I wonder if they can impose the underground on cheaters.  One week Live suspension and permanent restriction to the underground zone.

I did like the idea that if you give someone negative feedback, the matching system won't put you two in the same game again (assuming it can be avoided).
1409  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / XBox 360 Live Zone Poll on: May 19, 2005, 09:05:57 PM
Borrowing the descriptions from Gamespy
Called "Gamerzones," each area will offer you different experiences. The Pro Zone is for those gamers who live for competition and don't take losing or cheating lightly, while the R&R Zone is the place to go if you just want to play some enjoyable, stress-free games. If you've got kids that play on Live, chances are good that you don't want them exposed to the general population. With this in mind, the team created a Family Zone where profanity and poor play aren't tolerated. Finally, there's the Underground Zone, where just about anything goes. Enter at your own risk!
emphasis added.

Though I might like to think of myself as hardcore, online I tend to like a more casual attitude towards gameplay.  I just want to have fun.  I guess I"m R&R.

1411  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / So where do you stand right now? on: May 17, 2005, 04:47:42 PM
I don't see myself paying more than $400 for a console.  If that means I'm waiting for price drops, so be it.  There are enough current gen titles coming out  that interest me (plus my backlog) to tide me over until then.  I'm sure eventually I'll pick up all three again.

I'm also going to have a real problem supporting consoles that think $70 is a good price point for games.  With Fry's and patience, I might be able to overlook that.

I do find it interesting that some of the same people on the Internet (note I'm not specifically talking about here) that hyped the Xbox because it was the most powerful and had the best feature set, are now saying, "it's all about the games, power won't make that much of a difference in this next generation," in their support of the Xbox 360.  Right.

Live is pretty cool, but let's face it neither Sony nor Nintendo had much of an online plan for the current generation.  That will change with the future generation.  I don't think we're really in a good position to judge the various online plans yet.

If I had to choose one, I'd go with the PS3 based on a potential PS2 like game library plus having the most power.  I'm not sold on the boomerang controller, but I'll reserve judgment until I feel one in my sweaty little palms.

The 360 would be a close second because of the proven online track record and their newly shown commitment to procuring quality exclusives.  Coming out first doesn't hurt either.  They mentioned it was wireless internet ready.  If it's wireless out of the box to match Sony (and perhaps Nintendo), it will be that much more tempting.

I have high hopes for the Revolution, but my fear of ending up in a gaming wasteland with a few brilliant gems and large stretches of nothingness holds me back.
1412  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Question about Xbox 360 connection to home network on: May 15, 2005, 03:55:09 AM
Do you have a media center PC?  I was under the impression that a media center PC is basicaly handling everything with Windows Media Player 9 with all the associated Digital Rights Management stuff that goes with it.  So if you can't convince it you have the rights, it won't play.
1413  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Just preordered the Xbox 360! on: May 14, 2005, 10:41:42 PM
Weren't they promising something like 3 million units before the holidays?  If they have 3 million preorders before launch, Sony and Nintendo are in trouble.
1414  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Help me completely read my gaming manuals? on: May 14, 2005, 05:39:43 PM
A quick question:  Are you getting as much exercise as you used to?  When I was gaining weight (cause I was working too hard and didn't have time to work out, yeah, right), I noticed my attention span was getting shorter.  It started improving almost immediately once I got back in my workout routine.

On the flip side, if you're just looking for an excuse, many companies don't seem to spend the time and effort they used to on manuals.  The quality of writing has dropped quite a bit.  Of couse, that makes exceptions all the more enjoyable, but it's easy to get jaded.
1415  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox RPG's - the future just got **much** brighter.... on: May 14, 2005, 05:28:25 PM

RPGFan and RPGamer have some new details regarding Blue Dragon and the newly-unveiled second game, Lost Odyssey.

That RPGfan article also mentions the first 360 RPG, a launch game from From, eM - eNCHANT arM.

That got me wondering.  Has there been a console launch RPG that wasn't bad?  Better yet was there one that was good?

I don't know.  If I started thinking about getting cash, I'd start thinking about selling enough stuff to buy a PSP.  That road is too evil to contemplate.

There's got to be something else I need...

Sony PS2 Memory card?

Any strategy games I've missed?
Armies of Exigo?
Act of War: Direct Action?
Empire Earth II?

I don't know.

1418  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Who all is excited about the big PS3 unveiling?! on: May 12, 2005, 10:13:29 PM
Let's see.  Microsoft has to get people interested now to build up to their launch in the fall.  If Sony is smart, they're sitting back taking notes on everything that works and everything that doesn't.  Sony just needs to officially announce the PS3 and a couple of big game titles to go with it.

Sony needs to make a big splash in the month before the 360 launches.  That's when they need to pull the eyes away from MS.   They did it pretty masterfully against Sega, but they have a tougher nut to crack this time.  I'm sure the amount of big announcements from Sony will probably be deafening around that time.  Their big goal is to create doubt.  They want people thinking, "Should I get a 360 or wait for the PS3."  If you can establish doubt, a lot of people will wait.  They don't have to stop people from buying the 360, they just can afford an insurmountable lead.

The more I think about it and the more I see it in print I'm really starting to like the name "Xbox 360".  It does seem to have impact and the number 360, at least in my brain, implies "large," "advanced," and "new."

Think about what the third iteration could be called:   Xbox 720 followed by the Xbox 1440.  I like it.  It's different and it isn't the boring old 1, 2, 3.... smile
See in my brain it implies spinning around without getting anywhere.  The only thing I like about it is that 360 degrees equals one revolution.  Cute little jab at Nintendo.  Of course, now that I think about it perhaps Xbox 365 would have been better.  Gaming for every day of the year and greater than a revolution.

Since no one else mentioned it, I'll point out that before you order cables, make sure your cube is one of the older ones that has the digital port.  The new cubes don't have it as Nintendo said no one uses it.

I think my cables shipped from Nintendo after about a week.

No, you can't play from your soundtrack on Burnout 3.

That makes it sound worse than it is, but it's still not good.   You can play your custom soundtracks, but upon boot up it will always reset to EA trax.  My theory is that EA paid for those tracks so they're trying to force you to "give them a shot."

Oh, and I don't think the announcer made it 5 minutes with me which was odd since it sounded like the same guy from SSX 3 whom I never turned off.  Writing is important.

1432  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / Looking for Romance of the Three Kingdoms VIII (8) on: April 12, 2005, 09:41:39 PM
I should have pointed it out, but you do need the network adapter to connect the hard drive and not all hard drives fit the network adapter (Western Digital being the primary culprit that doesn't fit).  It's possible to jury rig something that will allow any drive to fit, but it's usually easier to use a Maxtor or Seagate or something.

Btw.  Even though it's practically impossible to explain why, the quote in your sig is the best in the movie.  That's saying something given the great one liners.

You know what Jack Burton always says at a time like this.

I'm also sorry I can't help you.  In fact, I've been keeping an eye out for one myself.

Have you considered using Hd Loader?  It doesn't  work with the slimline PStwo and you do need a hard drive, but less risk of busting disks when you're not swapping them out all the time.  It's especially good for strategy games and games you play over and over.

I think any game you pick would be a hit honestly (well, with the exeption of "true" sports games, as the AAR's for them are relatively boring, even to me, a giganto sports fan.)

If you pick up a copy of Computer Gaming and look toward the back of it for the Tom vs Bruce article and read through it... you will totally get it, and see that most any "versus-type" game would work.

For me... old game, new game, wouldn't matter.  And I think it would be a riot if you guys did it.  Trust me, if you read the column to get an idea of how it's done, you would see the possibilities are endless.

I hope this gets adopted.  I have a quasi-friendship with Tom over e-mail, and he says the feedback they get for the article is extremely positive.

Edit:  Here is a link to a pretty old one, but you can at least get the gist of how it's done.

Tom vs. Bruce Example

LD

I must be a terrible publicist.  While I certainly wouldn't mind seeing more write ups like that here, I did create Talk Strategy to house all kinds of gaming stories including head to head battles.   I've written long columns on my site on why I believe strategy and tactical games make the best fodder for AAR's and story write ups, but to put it simply those are the games where you write the story.  Your commands and decisions dictate the course of events.  It's interesting to read about why you made each decisions often because it's not the reason I would have done it.

Talk Strategy was started off a similar discussion at Gone Gold.  I apologize if I've done a poor job getting the word out.  Please stop by and check it out.  You can click the WWW link below my sig.

Just for clarity, I would add that the Tom vs Bruce articles are in Computer Gaming World.  For obvious reasons, I think those types of articles and AAR's are a welcome addition to any site.

Gamefly does have a free trial.  You could see how bad the wait is from your location.  For instance, since Houston is a hub, mail gets here a lot faster than you'd think.  I'd post the link, but the link I have is the sponsor link from my website and that's against the rules (not to mention rude).   I'm sure you can find it if you look.

(B) (B) (power)

or starting from the main menu

(down) (down) (down) (A) to select settings

(down) (down) (down) (A) to select Video

(down) (A) (right) (A) to select no to 480p

(B) (B) (power)

Good luck.
1439  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / XBOX Connection Problem - stumped, please help! on: March 31, 2005, 06:52:59 AM
I think I see the problem.  I believe you only get the video mode options if you have the HD pack installed (component cables).  When you use the regular cables it just gives you the options for 480i.

You'll probably have to do it by "feel"  You'll have to know the button presses to get you to the video options.  480p will be the second choice, right under screen mode.  You'll have to turn it off.  Then hit B twice.  Then reboot the Xbox, and it should come up in 480i.  Hopefully with a little playing around you should get it.  Good luck.
