Now I feel lazy for not writing more up, but I figured it was better to get a list out there before the sale was over than have a bunch of perfect blurbs too late.  Here are some games I was keeping my eye on for the sale.  I haven't played them, but I've heard positive buzz.  Unfortunately, some don't appear to be on sale:

Victor Vran
The Swindle
Thea --- The Awakening  -- Bill Harris is gushing over this at Dubious Quality
Satellite Reign

Enjoy getting back in PC gaming.  I'll defer to Gratch on the best version of HOMM III.

It appears to take all the refinements and additions they made across the series and created a consistent experience across all three games' content.  Now you have the classes from the beginning.  Drops seem better.  But no, it's not a new game.  It is a director's cut of the series.
4  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Van Helsing Final Cut on: November 07, 2015, 07:18:17 PM
After several delays it's "Finally" been released.  If you own all three, you get it free, but it doesn't just show up in your games list or inventory.  No, you have to go to the neocore redemption page and log in with your steam account.  Apparently, you must have your account set to public for the redemption.  I don't have any impressions yet since, even though I have all three installed, it's still downloading 12.9 GB's.

<insert Van Helsing redemption joke here.>

OK, picked this up today and I'm going to give it a whirl tonight. If anyone has any items they're not using, I'd appreciate getting the chance to kick demon butt with them. icon_cool

I haven't played for a while, but I'll take a look.  What platform and class are you playing?

Volume is the Robin Hood meets Metal Gear Solid VR missions, right?  I'll watch for impressions.
7  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Jonathan Strange movie rights on: August 03, 2015, 09:01:38 PM
I saw all the episodes.  The pacing was much better for the miniseries.  It seems like it could have been confusing if you hadn't read the book, but it's hard for me to judge.  The casting was even better than I was expecting.  Overall I enjoyed it and recommend it.  Though if you don't like the feel of the first episode, it doesn't really change.  They did not change the ending.  If anything, it felt less satisfying.  Maybe that's only because the sequel still hasn't shown up.

Wow.  Starting with a teenager (with thug friends no less).  My kids are younger, but the first piece of advice that comes to mind is that it's easier to relax strict rules than it is to try to tighten up rules once trouble begins.

Good luck.  Martial arts seems like a good idea since it will help him learn self discipline while making him realize he doesn't want to cross you.

Oh, and from friends who had kids with drug problems, zero tolerance for illegal activity.  As in, yes, I will call the cops on you myself.  Protecting them from the consequences of their actions only teaches them that there are no consequences.

Parenting will teach you a lot about love, both the joy and the pain.  It will bring you and your wife together especially as you try to stay on the same page.

Still, your student mastered ceiling fighting.  I gave up after wall jumping (just couldn't get wall running).  Even losing while fighting on the ceiling is a major accomplishment, especially as a senior citizen.

Try not to break the guy's bones though.  Unless he's asking for it.
10  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Jonathan Strange TV Series on: June 10, 2015, 06:08:20 PM
So the BBC adaptation of this is starting Saturday on BBC America.  I thought the book was alternately brilliant and tedious.  It did seem a bit long for a movie, so perhaps this adaptation will work well.  It's worth checking out.  Set your DVR's or you can check out the first episode at the link.

Tested all the ports and tested with another TV.  The problem seems to be with the receiver.  I'm pretty sure it was caused by my toddler's rapid button pressing.  Now I have to find a replacement receiver.  Anything cool out there these days?  Are they all 4K compatible?

We're moving to a new house.  It's just a couple of miles from our old one.  It's bigger and will better fit our family.  In our current house, we basically only had Comcast as an option.  There has been recently really slow DSL service, but it's not even competitively price per Megabit.

Amazingly our new house has options.  We can stick with Comcast, we can go with ATT Uverse (with promises of gigabit service in the works) or we could go with Verizon FIOS.  Comcast has been reliable and has decent online and mobile tools to fix problem.  Things go terribly downhill if I have to actually talk to a person.

We're not looking to do cord cutting in the near future.  We currently use a Tivo with a cablecard.  I understand those don't work with Uverse.

Any advice related to those services would be appreciated.  Thanks for the help.

I'm not much help either.  Our kids only fought over giving up the pacifier.  Well, we don't know about the youngest yet.  I could point out the obvious to reinforce and reward the good behavior while pointing out and discouraging the thumb sucking.  Or I could point you to this product that always shows up at the last column of the Amazon windowshop app:  Thumbusters.  Good luck.

20  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Samsung and HTC at Mobile World Congress on: March 02, 2015, 04:18:39 PM
So Samsung announced two new Galaxy S6 models and HTC tried to fix the flaws with the One M8 with the strikingly similar looking One M9.  Are any of these good enough to knock off the Nexus 6?  I think I'm leaning toward the S6 Edge, but with little kids, I'll need a good case.  That might remove the advantage of the Edge.

They look good, but I'm testing each TV port to see if they show the same problem.  It takes a while since the problem is intermittent.   Maybe I should use the Oscars.  icon_wink
22  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / HDMI Troubles on: February 22, 2015, 09:28:35 PM
My TV and Receiver are both several years old.  All of a sudden I've started getting what look like HDMI problems.  Sound and video will cut out like they're handshaking again.  This is happening on multiple sources so I think the problem is likely one of those two.  I replaced the cable between them, but the problem remained.  None of the setting on the receiver seem to fix the situation.  Both are up to date firmware.  I'm going to try to do some direct to the TV testing to see if it is just the receiver.  I have an 18 month old, so something could have been messed up, but I don't know what it could be.  Any troubleshooting advice would be appreciated.  They've worked pretty flawlessly together until now.  Thanks in advance for the help.

So many species of radioactive spiders that can bite people.

Actually, after all these genetically modified spiders, a radioactive one would be a nice change of pace.  I thought Norton's Incredible Hulk did a good job with the familiar but abbreviated origin.  It was also one of the many homages in the film to the old TV show.  If Agents of Shield is still around then, they could always flesh out more of the back story on TV.

I've used Fraps (paid) forever without problems, but I've heard some people prefer Action.  Is Xfire still around?  They used to have video recording.  The MSI afterburner had some video recording bundled with it.  I've heard of Bandicam but never tried it.  Can't twitch and Ustream record gameplay as well?  Maybe you should ask Hark.  He posts tons of videos.

New this week: Most anticipated games of 2015 - The Witcher 3: Wild Hung, Battlefield Hardline, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, and more!

Well, the Witcher always had a libertine attitude towards sex.  Why not go full porn title?

Eh.  I'd say it's about the same either way.  There are some spoilers but certainly nothing that would ruin the story of ISS.  It's all background of some of the characters he meets.  As long as you don't play them back to back, I don't think order matters.  I'm not sure if they patched all the minor refinements from First Light into the base game or not.

Offhand, I'd guess that's because it's really hard to win World War I.  Mostly you try not to lose.  Then you can outlast your opponents.  I'm only speaking in general, I have tried this particular WWI game.
