I guess to celebrate the release of Syberia 3; they're giving away Syberia 2.

I couldn't find a generic topic for Origin free games.  They've had a few good ones, but I always forget to check.

I think I have Dead Nation not Alienation.  Is that any good?

I thought Titanfall didn't have a single player campaign.  Or are we talking Titanfall 2?  I do have Pony Island from steam sale.

I obsessed over Pocket Jockey for a month last year.  Great recommendation if you haven't played it.

I played Ryse on my computer.  Hmm.  Steam says I played for 18 minutes.  Maybe I should give it another shot.  Speaking of Games with Gold, Darksiders was one of my favorite games of the last generation.  Everyone with even a vague interest in the genre should check it out for free.

I haven't heard of either of those Blackjack.  I'll have to check them out.  I did play a ton of Stardew valley.

No, I'm not just talking about my pathetic attempts at golf.  I've just finished Final Fantasy XV, Horizon and Watch Dogs 2.  They were all long and involved games.  I enjoyed all of them, but I'm a bit burned out.  I need some short bites.  Any recommendations?  They can be for PC, PS4, PS3, Vita,  3DS, or Xbone.  Even better if it's already something I may not have gotten to in my backlog (from Steam sales, Games with Gold and PSN free games).  Thanks in advance.
5  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC] Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun (Commandos meets Ninjas/Samurais) on: March 27, 2017, 10:20:14 PM
Not a deep discount yet, but it's on sale this week for $30 (25% off).
6  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4/XB1]Final Fantasy XV on: February 02, 2017, 12:10:18 AM
I finished this one and had a good time.  I enjoyed it enough that I waded through a chunk of the post story content to get the Platinum.  I enjoyed the whole game.  The only parts that felt like let downs were Chapter 13, the maze in Costlemark, and the 'airship.'  That airship was the one Final Fantasy note that went sour.  It's supposed to be a reward that grants you speed and freedom.  All I got was a bunch of crashy death.

I thought the combat was greatly rewarding as long as I stayed near my level in opposition. It really shines in some of the 'hidden' extra dungeons.  Magic was the same way.  Once I hit some tough battles, I really dug into the system.  The flexibility there is amazing.

The brotherhood aspect really made the game shine.  The characters were relatable and fun. It made the final chapters (even 13) that much more poignant. The Brotherhood videos made the experience even better.

I love it when a game rises above it's flaws.  This game certainly did that.  Highly recommended.

It sounds like Rebel Galaxy may be more of what your looking for.  It's simpler.  It's got a relatively short campaign.  It's available on the XBone.  It still scratches that space adventure itch.  I'm not saying it's a better game, but it may be closer to what you'd like.
12  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Pinball FX2 on Steam on: May 15, 2016, 05:20:25 AM
Anyone still playing?  Apparently, Zen reset all the leaderboards late last year after an exploit was discovered.  I started playing again to try out the Force Awakens tables and get my scores back up on the boards.  I've noticed that there are only a smattering of former players from my friends list who've posted any scores at all since the reset.  I haven't bought the new Aliens Vs. tables yet.  I'm not sure if I will if no one is playing any more.

Anybody?  What about that deaf, dumb and blind kid?

What happened to the October fight?

Short story version is that my opponent missed weight. Not by a little either, his KFC loving butt was two weight classes above 48 hours before weigh ins.  I wasn't not able to to accept the fight even if I wanted to due to commission regulations, however I was fairly compensated for showing up at weight.  Very anticlimactic end to a grueling fight camp in which my trainer had two world class strikers from Thailand help train me.

TWO weight classes?  What is that, 15 pounds?

Almost 18 pounds overweight, so ridiculous  disgust

Good grief.

If I had to fight Kato, I'd be stress eating as well.
14  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Laser multifunction recommendations on: April 15, 2016, 02:00:08 AM
My faithful Canon multifunction laser printer is dying. It still prints just fine, but copy sheet feeder stopped working and now the manual print feed has died. Oh, and I can't scan on my main computer. I have to hook it up to the laptop running windows 7 to get it to scan. I think it's about time to replace it.

Ideally, I'd like something with full network printing and scanning. Wireless printing would be a plus, but not required. I don't need fax capability. Black and white printing is fine. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Cross posted at OO.

One of the games that updated on my system had a new prompt on start up. It said use "Win + G" to open game panel.  It looked like it had some Xbox style game functions when you pressed that key combo.

Just to be clear: I am a parent.  My 12 year old asked if she could see Deadpool, and I nearly spit out my scotch.

For some reason, I got a vivid visual of this scene.  It was rather like Andrew's imagination in the Buffy episode, "Storyteller."  You sitting in your high backed chair near the fire, wearing a smoking jacket, pipe in mouth (a bubble pipe, of course), sipping your Glenfiddich, flipping through a massive tome.

My kids are way too sensitive to be seeing R rated movies before their time.  Heck, the new 'live action' Jungle Book trailer creeped them out.

Admittedly, not really.  They exist primarily as quest dispensers.

I have to agree.  A new faction and area open up during the story, but that's about it.  The new faction also has some different loot, so that might interest you.  I enjoyed it, but it was a make you own fun sandbox.

Disappointing: The Pillars of Eternity expansion.  Not because its bad, by all accounts it is really good, my problem is it is a midgame expansion instead of a continuation of the story.

I had the same experience the first time I played it.

The parkour was slow. Anything I jumped to it would take a second or two to pull yourself up. So I ended up stopping about 3hrs in when enemies were easily overpowering me and it was tough to maneuver.

But I gave it a second try a month ago or so and it was a totally different experience. Apparently I wasn't doing the parkour right. If you double tap the bumper - once to jump and the second time when you land or grab on to something - you fly over everything. Completely changed the game.

Moving around was fun now. Even got to the point where getting to night drops were a blast.

The ending of the game still sucks but everything else was great.

I'm guessing this had to be about Soulchilde's Dying Light post.  I'm pretty sure parkour isn't part of Pillars of Eternity.

It's available everywhere, but it's almost never required.  Most of my trading was selling the lost cargo of people who decided to attack me.  You can choose how you want to play the game, but you'll probably need weapons and shields appropriate to the system you're in.  Ok, exploration probably won't net you enough money to do much, but mining, security, piracy, bounty hunting and trading are all viable.

Keep in mind you're gimping the developers money by doing this, plain and simple.

That's only true if I would have bought it at full price in the first place.  Pricing is always a negotiation.  I want the most value for my dollar.  They want the best price for their item.  We make a deal when we agree the price is right.  In these cases, they get my purchase now rather than waiting for a sale later.  I'm also giving up my, admittedly limited, return rights under Steam.

If I want to support a developer, I will happily do so.  I've even been known to pick up some ridiculous collector's editions.  I'm looking at you my Homeworld remake Mothership.  Let's not even get into Kickstarter.

I do appreciate the input.

GMG seemed a little shady when they were first starting up, but they've proven to be a reliable, reputable and lasting company.  I've gotten some great deals from them.  Now CDKeys seems to be following their business model.  I've bought from them once without any problems.  How's your experience been with them?  Is there anything squirrelly about their model?

29  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PS2 emulation on the PS4 is an exciting prospect on: December 05, 2015, 05:56:37 AM
I was expecting $5-10, but I didn't realize they 'added value' by uprendering and supporting casting, remote play and trophies.  That also leaves some room for them to go on sale.  I played and enjoyed almost all of those back in the day.  Never tried Rogue Galaxy for some reason.  I'll probably pick up War of the Monsters sometime to play with my kids.

The video at the link showed Fantavision.  With all the great PS2 library, was anyone asking for Fantavision?  I replayed Mark of Kri a little while back.  I had forgotten how bloody and violent it was.

Now I feel lazy for not writing more up, but I figured it was better to get a list out there before the sale was over than have a bunch of perfect blurbs too late.  Here are some games I was keeping my eye on for the sale.  I haven't played them, but I've heard positive buzz.  Unfortunately, some don't appear to be on sale:

Victor Vran
The Swindle
Thea --- The Awakening  -- Bill Harris is gushing over this at Dubious Quality
Satellite Reign

Enjoy getting back in PC gaming.  I'll defer to Gratch on the best version of HOMM III.

It appears to take all the refinements and additions they made across the series and created a consistent experience across all three games' content.  Now you have the classes from the beginning.  Drops seem better.  But no, it's not a new game.  It is a director's cut of the series.
33  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Van Helsing Final Cut on: November 07, 2015, 07:18:17 PM
After several delays it's "Finally" been released.  If you own all three, you get it free, but it doesn't just show up in your games list or inventory.  No, you have to go to the neocore redemption page and log in with your steam account.  Apparently, you must have your account set to public for the redemption.  I don't have any impressions yet since, even though I have all three installed, it's still downloading 12.9 GB's.

<insert Van Helsing redemption joke here.>

I saw all the episodes.  The pacing was much better for the miniseries.  It seems like it could have been confusing if you hadn't read the book, but it's hard for me to judge.  The casting was even better than I was expecting.  Overall I enjoyed it and recommend it.  Though if you don't like the feel of the first episode, it doesn't really change.  They did not change the ending.  If anything, it felt less satisfying.  Maybe that's only because the sequel still hasn't shown up.

Wow.  Starting with a teenager (with thug friends no less).  My kids are younger, but the first piece of advice that comes to mind is that it's easier to relax strict rules than it is to try to tighten up rules once trouble begins.

Good luck.  Martial arts seems like a good idea since it will help him learn self discipline while making him realize he doesn't want to cross you.

Oh, and from friends who had kids with drug problems, zero tolerance for illegal activity.  As in, yes, I will call the cops on you myself.  Protecting them from the consequences of their actions only teaches them that there are no consequences.

Parenting will teach you a lot about love, both the joy and the pain.  It will bring you and your wife together especially as you try to stay on the same page.

So the BBC adaptation of this is starting Saturday on BBC America.  I thought the book was alternately brilliant and tedious.  It did seem a bit long for a movie, so perhaps this adaptation will work well.  It's worth checking out.  Set your DVR's or you can check out the first episode at the link.
