FPS Tweak

source: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=235286

This is a change to the ini file that changes the distance view in the game.  The default value is 1 but setting it to 0.33711949 can dramatically increase your fps.  I set it on mine last night and tested it and gained around 40 fps on Nar Shadda (was 40-50 fps, now 85-92 fps).  Right now in the fleet I'm hitting between 25-30 fps after this change and forcing 4X AA with super sampling (which before was around 12 fps).  Might be worth checking out if you're one of the ones experiencing low fps.

I can't open that thread from your link but am very interested.  what is the actual fix?  which file? my client_settings.ini does not have a default listed for distance view.

Edit: looks like, perhaps it's "FarClipScale = 0.3371195" in the client_settings.ini

One thing I've noticed with every piece of orange armor that I've upgraded with new mods is that it won't display the new armor rating until after I equip it.  Once I'm wearing it the armor rating adjusts to the new mods.  Not sure if that's just a bug I'm seeing, but thought I would share in case anyone was confused about why the armor rating didn't appear to change after intalling a new armoring mod.

Thanks for the clarification, that was one of the reasons I was so confused.  Couldn't figure out why my armor that had a 25 rating suddenly jumped to 250+.

Was poking around on the official forums yesterday, and was surprised at how many people apparently hate this game.  Are MMO forums typically like that (a vocal minority that screams until they're blue in the face) or is SWTOR simply not poplar with the "regular" MMO crowd?  As a non-MMO'er, I'm absolutely loving it, but maybe there are things that folks with more experience really don't like.

this is true of all MMO's (and most games)

Most people that are simply playing the game and enjoying it don't find any need to post.  The only people posting are the people pissed at something and the people obsessed with defending their favorite new game. (and Blackjack, who posts everything about everything  ninja )

BTW, where'd you get the SWAT hat I saw in the picture Kato posted?

They didn't fix the guild chat bug.  Or, at least they didn't announce a fix in the patch notes.  That's too bad.  There were large amounts of people with that, to my mind, game-breaking issue.

I just wanted to mention, since BJ referring to people having technical problems reminded me, that I found a workaround for my guild chat/party chat bug.  This alone has made it 3 times easier to enjoy the game and overlook some of the other bugs -- (outside of one char not being able to advance his story quest).

And, naturally, despite my earlier doom and gloom prognosis, I've become addicted.  No matter what the long term holds in store for this game, I certainly will have gotten my money's worth.
46  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic announced on: December 26, 2011, 05:51:09 PM
I'm no expert here but I think I can give you enough to go forward with:

1. Orange gear is good because you can add mods to it, yes, keeping current with your level through the modding system.  Is it generally the best way to go?  I can tell you that my crafted gear is easier to maintain because it keeps up and doesn't require the mod investment.  Otherwise, I haven't often found anything in quests or drops that really blows away my fully modded orange gear.

2. yes, the things listed in blue are the mods currently loaded onto the item.  The number is the item rating of the mod -- the BW version of item level and an abstracted evaluation of the general quality of the gear.

3.  The ways I have received orange gear: commendation turn in at vendor, boss drop, quest reward.  This doesn't mean normal/strong/elite mobs don't drop it.  I've just never experienced it.  Orange armor does exist.  I'm surprised you haven't encountered a chest piece in your quest rewards on Cor.  It has different slots than the weapon mods.

If you are okay with researching on the web, Torhead's a great database of what has been found so far.  (SW version of WoWhead).

Umm, not to sound like a jerk, but they had it in their launcher at least all day yesterday instructing folks to fully set up their account, including a subscription.  If you already went and registered your key, you would have also seen a screen that showed all of the  categories needing to be done, that included setting up security questions and the last of them was setting up your subscription.

I don't recall a single MMO that wasn't F2P that didn't require a subscription day 1.
Very good points.  Very true.  Valid.  And I do feel some embarrassment for not having taken care of this.

And yet, their servers are getting pounded to a halt and many otherwise intelligent people (like those on this forum) didn't get the message -- at least as urgent.  This is also often a problem, but as service providers, they are supposed to be the experts in getting their clients access and ensuring continued access.  Seems like more could have been done here.  The evidence of a problem is plain.

It would be great if they would let us in while they do this.

As a former developer, I try not to whine too much about launches, but I've been having a hell of a time trying to play this game.  From issues like key redemption, to broken quests, to the necessity of UI resets and many other issues that require relogs, etc.  The biggest issue has been the guild chat bug where I just lost the capability to read and write guild chat for about 3 days -- until I found a really wonky hack fix on the forums.  My party chat goes down all the time, forcing a relog (which doesn't always fix it).  I had a group mate yesterday who kept losing mouse input everytime he zoned to or from the Hammer Station FP.  Etc.

I was actually warming to the game itself -- a Kotor-like rpg on a grand scale (with people!) -- but it has been a struggle.  The struggle is, of course, compounded by my busy schedule and small windows to play.

Oh, well, venting over.  Back to seeing if I can log in for a 30 minute breakfast session.

Man, the force is strong with the GT effect.  Almost as strong as the old GG effect.

But, I think you guys are right.  It will be fun to play through the storylines and hang with friends.  And the time to do that is launch, not later when the friends are scarcer.

Okay, I submit!

I have to say that, even though I have negative feelings towards the longevity of this game, I still am tempted to go for it.  I'm an MMO junkie -- in that I feel the need to always be in one -- and this is the only thing out there I haven't burned out on.  I know I'm not being smart about it, but can't resist the penny candy, even if an everlasting gobstopper it ain't.   retard

I enjoyed the one flashpoint that I played (over and over).  It was fun the way they did the dialog and choices.  Still, I don't feel like the interesting Kotor/ME-like storytelling is very well integrated into the MMO.  THAT could be where they innovate and I would be impressed and interested.  It all feels very safe, though.  Their $$ went into asset creation and they will damn well make that $$ back.  I get it.  I'm not a hater, just not a lover.

What is my go to MMO? I wish I had one to tell the truth. But what it is in theory, is that MMO you play and it just grabs ya from the get-go. You can't stop thinking about it and your character. You day dream about builds and you next levels. I've had it a few times so I do know it when I smash into it.  nod
And I've played MMO's that I knew I would be subscribing to for a long time in beta form. And in all their un-finisheness I still knew it was going to be my go-to MMO for a long while.
Tor never gave me that in the least. It lacks identifiable things that we've all mentioned, but it also lacks the intangible things that just grab ya and don't let you go. It just felt so bland, and sterile. Not even great graphics to keep you oooo'ing and aaaaah'ing for a while.
I think this is going to be a bumpy ride for BW.
Heh, I was actually fishing for which MMO's grabbed you like that.  Quite a few have grabbed me, but only SWG and WoW had me for an extended period of time.

See, for me I saw enough in the "test" to know that Swtor is nothing special in the Whacky World of gaming. The things that will, or will not get changed by release time, wont be the things that make Swtor another yawn fest after 3 or 4 weeks. I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade, but I've got an opinion like everyone else.

There is nothing in ToR that says, "hey, this is gonna be my go to MMO for a long while". And the things that alot of people are stoked about I don't find that cool in a MMO. The whole voiced over story line thing. Its different, but its not going to help longevity for ToR.
Anyway, far be it from me to dampen peoples fun and excitment for this. I hope this turns out to be all that and fish n chips. But I don't think so.
What's your "go to MMO", then?  I'm curious, because you make it sound like there is a spot reserved, what fills or has filled that spot.

I don't disagree with your assessment, really.  I don't see the legs on this one.    From what little I saw, it seemed like a mix of standard MMO fare (wow-like, eq-like) and standard KotOR rpg fare (which bioware does pretty well), but a mix like oil and water rather than reese's peanut butter cup.  I just think the kotOR fare was done pretty well.  I couldn't really tell, but the MMO part didn't seem that exciting or evolved.
60  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic announced on: December 02, 2011, 06:35:27 AM
Yeah, well, it wasn't a ubiquitous problem, 1, (in fact, most people reported no significant issues with pvp frame rate) and 2, I'm not sure it was lag at all but something to do with the way my machine was handling player effects.  My specs are low and I'm not buying a new machine for gaming, so, it makes sense for me to be concerned.  icon_eek  I didn't mean to imply that the deal was broken.   slywink

If they fix it, that's great, but, being in a marginal minority, I'm not holding out much hope.

Oh, and yes, I reported it.  In detail.

I finally hopped into a pvp match and, woah, suddenly my aging machine didn't cut it at all.  Completely unplayable.  Frame rate dropped to a crawl.  I was doing pretty well up until then, so I dropped everything down to low.  Still no go.  In one match I got 10 killing blows and saw absolutely none of them.

Sadly, that's a deal-breaker for me.  I was really enjoying the storytelling up until then. And the voice-acting is superb -- really a cut above.  Perhaps the best I've ever experienced.

I haven't played over the week-end much at all. Not because of any technical reason, but lack of desire. eek

It wasn't for trying though. Played equally between the factions. Played equally between the classes. Highest I got was around 8 or 9. The rest I got past 5. And so I realize that a beta does not a game make.
But I've kicked around these woods long enough to know a few things intuitively.

The game will get better. A given. But greatness will never be found in this MMO I'd wager. The usual suspects of annoyance in a MMO are all there. UI...graphics...animations....crafting(only what I've heard) end game is suspect, which usually means, raiding and PvP for gear...dead enviroments...Very rigid, static NPC standing around in 2's and 3's their lips are moving but they aint saying a word.

Usual suspects all there, yep indeed. But for me there are alot of intangibles that are AWOL. Atmosphere is prozak bland. The environs feel dead and lifeless to the enth degree. Other than the story telling and cut-scene-voice overs, most of the game I saw was a C-.
I actually laughed out loud when I went through the available character creation options. It reminded me of the Clone war commercials I've seen.(never watched a single episode) cartoony and silly looking. I've noticed bobble-headed characters running around..City of Heroes Brute like ones...Just terrible character looks and animations to go along with the uglies.

Over a 100 million smack-a-roo's and years in the oven, and this is what we get? BW can now add this to Dragon Age-2, to have book-ends of flops.
Is it too early to call it a flop? Yeah, probably. But again, my gut is telling me that this is going the way of Rift, and others. It will start out with a BANG!!! and within a few months it will fizzle off most vet-MMO players radar.
FTP in 18 months.

The good looking guy from Wasaga-Beach gives this two little toes down.....A solid 4 out of 10.  More green tomatoes than red..........A woof-woof.....But this of course is just "IMHO" thumbsdown

Only thing I disagree with is that prozac is bland.

Of course, playing to level 12 on a couple of characters (me) doesn't necessarily give me much perspective.

Thankfully, the deli line is also an ephemeral feature.  It's never as bad as it is at launch (or beta).

From what I saw, I agree with Rittchard without, I think, having the same level of disappointment.  It's a mix-up of the genres.  And each just seems to get out of the other's way, at best, rather than integrate immersively.  Neither implementation is that breathtaking -- nor I might add, are they bad.

That said, from 1-10, the traditional single-player elements seem stronger to me than the MMO elements.  I chatted a lot with a couple of affable beta vets while tooling around the various planets and they all seemed to agree that that trend continues into later levels.

The voice-acting is uniformly great, I must say, to end on a positive note.  I'm almost always convinced by the characters.

Well I'm still having trouble running the game, and I'm wondering if it is due to lag instead of my computer since I should meet their requirements now to play the game. Unfortunately, it's borderline unplayable. Hit one of the WASD keys to move, and there's a significant delay before my character actually does anything.
