I have a jewel case one somewhere...

Loving the support package.  The recon drone is wonderful, slight stun when an enemy is tagged, tag assassins and other radar resistant perks (basically have to be right on top of them though).

Racking up massive assists and points using it.  Had one match where I has 21 assists.

I'm not sure what they are thinking with weapon proficiencies.  In every CoD there seems to be one gun that everyone bitches about.  Now the more someone uses the "OP" gun, it will get better...wonderful.

Edit:  Just saw Hardline Pro - Every 2 assists count as 1 kill on top of 1 kill less for reward.  Seeing as I can easily get 10 assists per TDM by throwing flash grenades and general connection WTF moments, added with killstreak kills counting towards the killstreak counter makes me start to want to avoid MP on this one.

On the plus side, it's been entertaining watching the games and asking the wife stupid questions when she's tired.

Wife: "Who are they playing?"
Me: "Baltimore.  Do you know which state that's in?"
W: "Chicago."

So far, I've got 20-25 hours in. It really fills that New Horizons nostalgia. The downside is that the learning curve isn't really a curve. It's really difficult how do describe the tutorials, as they break them out into Beginner School, Intermediate School, and Advanced School.  Although the game says you don't even have to go to "school" if you don't want to, you WILL quit the game out of frustration pretty quick (conversely, if you want to start playing right away, going the school path will probably make you quit out of boredom pretty quick).

Beginner School takes about 1-2 hours basically can be completed in your starter city.

Intermediate School takes about 4-6 hours, and a lot of that is sailing time to different cities to speak with a trainer for ~4 minutes, just to sail back and repeat. Intermediate School also assumes you've done things the game hasn't taught you how to do yet, which is a big pain in the ass.  Also, one lesson is to group up with 2 other players, but the "general chat" (school chat) is capped at 100 people, so there is a good chance that when you log in, you really can't talk to anyone outside /shout.

I haven't started Advanced School yet, but just looking at the flowcharts on the forums, I'm estimating that should take 10-12 hours to finish.

The upside is the rewards for doing the classes.  The Fame, XP, and Money is a good boost to get started, but you really have to like the genre to get into this one.

Kowloon is so crazy awesome.

So far the other 3 maps are campfests.

I've had the complete opposite experience.  Kowloon has 342 dark corners that are always occupied.

A quick summary.
Discovery has more snipers.
Stadium has more AK74u's.
Berlin has more sirens.
Kowloon has more campers.

I did have a long session of Ascension.  It reminds me a lot of Der Riese from [email protected] in there are a lot more easter eggs hidden throughout the map.  And it's huge.  The only problem with this one is the added perk PHD Flopper, which is like Flak Jacket with a bonus of causing an explosion every time you dive to prone to a lower elevation.  We had 4 people use this to take turns diving off stairs to hold off Zombies until wave 20.

Oh, and the monkeys are a pain in the ass.

Yep, and K/D only shows on TDM/FFA leaderboards as far as I know.  Overall K/D is on your Combat Record.

I'm with you that K/D is probably more important in TDM than SPM.  If you die a lot in TMD blowing up an RC car that was probably coming for you anyway didn't help me one bit.  Sure you can go 35-35 and get a high SPM that way and your account for 46% of the teams score, but you're also giving the other team 46% of theirs.

Outmanned in the Jungle: A Survival Story

It's the humidity that gets you.  Every move feels like you're walking through wading pool at the park with the kid.  I wish that were the case, but I'm stuck out here, wishing this god damn war would be over.

Through my rotten luck, and the incompetent brass it's just me and Bobby out here at this small bombed out village in the middle of no where.  Intel says there's 5 or 6 Charlies in the area.  I'd be worried, but that's above my pay grade.  All I can do is thank God that I have my G&G, Ghillie and Galil.  There was a box that was sent to me that had 2 frags, 3 flash, a claymore, (for some idiotic reason) a crossbow with 2 bolts, and something that I have no idea what it does.  Out here, you make due with what you get, even if you don't know what you have.

Bobby and I went out on a routine patrol around 9am.  He took the low ground.  Fucking Bobby.  I went the high path that runs by The Ridge, near that little supply dump under the netting.  Usually there's nothing but bugs and snakes up there, but if I were going to cover this area, it'd be from The Ridge.  Right before I come up to the bridge, that little box starts buzzing and humming.  I take it out and a little screen on it starts glowing and an arrow is pointing ahead.  I look towards the ladder and sure as shit there's a camera up there looking down at the dump, and it's glowing red.  Not sure what this box is, but I like it.  There's someone up on The Ridge, and he's mine.

It was about 6 months since I've seen some action, and I guess I can chalk this one up to excitement, but I let both frags fly and get nothing, not even a startled scream.  The camera is still there though, might as well take that out.  I through a flash to make sure I'm not front and center, smiling for not so candid camera.  I fire a bolt from the crossbow past the camera, still thinking Charlie would be near the camera. Nothing.  Second bolt takes out the camera, and I sit back and wait for him to make a mistake.  After what seems like hours, but was only seconds, he light's a small fire up there like it's a summer fucking camping trip and I want to put a round in each of his eyes.

Meanwhile, Bobby starts firing his ugly ass orange and black striped Famas.  Not sure what he's thinking, I've told him that's the first thing they are going to see in this god damn place.  He just smiles and says, "And the last."  Fucking Bobby.  Over the bullets I hear Bobby yelling, "1, 2!, 3...I got three of you bitches!  Who wants more!"   My little hot dog roasting friend hears this as well and looks out over the ladder.  Pop pop.  Enjoy that s'more in hell asshole.

Bobby got through on the radio after that, and said he had a U2 coming in to give a little recon.  Things are looking hopeful, but Charlie seems to just keep on coming.  I run over to the bridge and throw down the clay to cover my ass, and wait.  With these odds, this isn't the time to get ballsy.  The last thing I heard from Bobby was "I see you, my little pretties."  then laughing.  I think he got one more, but he didn't talk much after that, and I didn't see him again.

Thank god for the clay, because not long after that someone tripped it.  My blood is really pumping now and I can't really remember much of the battle.  I know I got through to the U2 again, and he made another pass, but the next couple minutes are a blur.

What I do remember is moving from the dump and going back across the bridge.  Either my luck is getting better or Charlie is just that stupid, but 2 were across the bridge looking right at me but I got both of them and took cover around the corner.  Not 2 seconds after laying down my radio cracks.  Brass is sending in an SR-71 for a look, and is going to feed me the Intel.  Also, the had a Huey in the area and are sending that over.  Finally, good news out here in this bug infested sauna.  The radio cracks one more time, and someones calling my name. "Hic, this is Sargent Dean, hang in there soldier.  We're reporting that there are 2 other friendlies out there with you, and what seems to a shit ton of Charlie.  I thought you might like to know that we're keeping score over here.  We're winning, by a lot.  Keep it up."  Then the radio falls silent.  Thank god, that asshole almost gave away my position.

The Blackbirds gone.  The Choppers gone.  Frags, claymore, bolts, flashes...all gone.  I think I've got a clip left.  Not too sure.  Charlies are all around me.  I just killed two who didn't see me, but their friends did.  They're coming for me.  Pretty sure this is the end, and I'm going take as many as I can with me.

I see one try to get on my flank and I grab my knife.  He rounds a corner, not knowing I'm only 2 steps behind.  My blade finds his spine, and he falls, slowly, as if the whole world is in slow motion.  Then I hear the choppers.  It's all over.  We won.  I'm going home.

Short version
Spoiler for Hiden:
Merc TDM, 2 level 4 prestige's on one side (eventually 3), versus 5-6 on the other.  Thanks matchmaking.  Not only did we win, it was a god damn blow out.  I finished 32-0, 35K+ XP, and the whole thing is on my file share if you're interested.

If I cannot tell the better guns by looking at the stats, do I have to buy them all, add attachements and play around with each to figure out what I want?

Unfortunately, this is going to be your best way to find out which setup works for you. Everyone plays a little differently, so the silenced spas might be a lot of fun for one player, and torture for the next.

My advice would be to load up a local split-screen match. This opens up all of the weapons and attachments, so you don't have to worry about wasting money on anything that you might not like. You'll be able to see how the gun feels, and get an idea for its accuracy. The downside is unless you have friends you wont be able to see how it works in a real fight, but at least you'll have an idea before you purchase it.

My two cents would be to do combat training to unlock everything.  That way you can still test out weapons with actual game settings, and you can set it to a 9v1 so you can kill away.

I have to respectfully disagree with Hiccup on his opinion of the last assault rifle G11. For players (like me) that thrive on burst weapons, the G11 is by far the best weapon you can get. The attachments do are not very good, but iron sights are all you need.
Remember that i only recommend this weapon only if you do well with burst weapons.

My problem is with the way burst weapons are handled in game, not necessarily the weapon itself.  It seems to me that the rounds in the burst are getting fractional damage compared to fully auto or semi auto weapons.
29  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Call of Duty:Black Ops [Impressions start @ page 12] on: November 15, 2010, 02:20:51 PM
Quick review of the classified weapons (sans Shotgun):

Skip if you want to find out for yourself:

Assault Rifle - G11
Stat wise, this should be an amazing gun.  Very near FN FAL damage wise, accuracy, etc.  The 3 round burst kills any benefit the improved stats may have however.  I'm hoping to see some numbers on damage per burst for the M16 and the G11, but even though both have higher damage than the FAMAS or the Galil/Commando, it consistantly takes more rounds to bring down a target.  Another huge disadvantage is there are only 2 attachments.  Enhanced Zoom Scope, and the Variable Zoom Scope.  The controller smashing, kitten punching problem with the Enanced Zoom Scope is there is no possible way to control the horrible sway of the rectile (or the horrible rectile itself).  You can't hold your breath like sniper rifles or the thermal scope (a la MW2), and the sway is only indicated in the rectile.  The environment stays perfectly still, only the rectile moves.   Not worth buying every Assault Rifle to get this one.

SMG - Kiparis
Fairly powerful and accurate SMG.  Iron Sights are sub-par compared to most others (Scorpion is by far the worst of the SMGs).  Not as strong as the AK-47u or the MP5, it doesn't seem to have as much recoil as either, even with the grip attached to the AK-47u.  I still haven't tried the Spectre yet, but I hear that handles a little easier.  Worth the purchase imo, fun gun.

LMG - Stoner63
Buy it.  Now.  Along with being one of the cheapest classified weapons to get, it's probably one of the best weapons in the game.  Black Ops feels like it has a huge bias towards Assault Rifles.  The relatively small magazines for the LMGs, aside from the M60, and the long reload times push me to using an Assault Rifle if I had a choice between the first three LMGs and the worst three ARs.  That's where the Stoner63 comes in.  It looks like an AR, it reloads as fast as an AR, and it gives you the option of the grip to keep accuracy on par with (or better than) most ARs.  I also love the fact that it feels like your carrying a Transformer in your hands as well.

Sniper Rifle - PSG1
Good Sniper Rifle, only downside is the game seems to hate snipers so much that using one is a massive disadvantage.  May try to ACOG one to see if it improves the experience, but I may have to push that back as a Combat Training test thingy.

Why wouldn't movement be handled with "Left Foot Forward" to move forward?  Sure, it throws you off balance for torso movement, but so would walking and flailing your arms.

I have some questions for the experts here regarding perks...

If I have Warlord Pro, which gives me one extra lethal and tactical grenade, and I'm also using Scavenger (or Scavenger Pro), when I get a reload bag do I get just one more lethal (both for Pro), or do I fill up to the max I had at spawn/respawn?

Scavanger refills only the initial grenade, not the extras gained from Warlord Pro.  Scavanger Pro refills one tactical grenade, and gives you more additional ammo.
Does Ghost Pro make me undetectable by choppers? I'm freaking out whenever one of those is in the air.
Should.  But I can't find a damn sentry gun to unlock Ghost Pro...
When I read that Hardline Pro allows me to change the contents of a Care Package, what are the limits? Can I pick anything?
It allows you to change the contents 1 time to another random reward.  It works on yours, your teams, and even enemy care packages.

The same reason Shipment in MW, and Rust in MW2 was never skipped.  75% of the people playing domination are playing for kills, not objectives.  At least now they show the captures/defends as a stat.

Warlord Pro is pretty good.  You start with +1 Tactical and Lethal Grenades.

What is the 'grim reaper'?  Is it just a rocket launcher?  Also what are the controls for the rc car?  I know rt is detonate, but I can't read the others for some reason.

Grim Reaper is a Rocket Launcher, but it has a 4 round magazine so you don't have to reload after every shot.

The RT is detonate.  LT says it's "Boost" but I can't tell a difference in speed.

The spawning mechanics will probably detract both campers and lightweight runners alike.

From what I've "heard", in TDM, the spawns switch faster and can't be blocked like in MW2.  Think of Highrise for example.  Easiest map to lock the opposing team in their spawn.  A similar map in Black Ops switches spawn points faster, and with more avalible points (not as predictable either.)

So If I was running a lightweight setup, with the rest of my team playing like an average CoD player.  I'll either be caught in the enemy spawn, or forced to double back to engage the other team spawning on the other side.  Likewise, if I try to camp with my team playing normally, it would be very hard to judge which direction the enemy is coming from.  Granted, this is without motion sensor/camera/UAV camping.  Again, from what I've "heard", the game tends to vary spawning much better than MW2.

The more I reflect on the maps in [email protected]/MW2/Black Ops (not that I had a chance to play a beta  ninja) the map/perk combos are utterly horrible in MW2 compared to Treyarch maps.

MW2 maps seem to follow the same formula, 2 levels and 3 paths (few exceptions).  If you think of every map as directional from spawn points, there are almost always 3 direct routes to each, and 2 levels for players to occupy (3-2).  Not only that, there are several maps that allow direct grenade fire from spawn to spawn.  Danger Close/One Man Army add to the "camping" as you never have to move, and only have to worry about 3 paths to watch.  Marathon/Lightweight/Commando also adds to the problem of 3-2 because there is not much room to work with.  IMO, there were very few well designed maps in MW2, and the perk combos exploited more of the maps than the mechanics (except Commando).  Spawns were also easy to figure out, and I've been on the giving and taking end of a spawn camp.

[email protected], the maps had multiple tiers, multiple paths of attack (or even very minimal paths).  There were elevation changes, numerous perches, more structures/cover.  The only knock I have is the spawning was pretty terrible.  I'm willing to bet that the people who prefer MW2 maps over [email protected] maps are the minority.  Treyarch made great maps...and the 3 maps in the videos are no exception (and 1 map that wasn't in the videos) and they've added some features to the maps that have some interaction.  I'll leave it at that for now.
