Ars Technica Xbox One review.

Bottom line: "Buy it if there are exclusives that appeal to you, not for the bells and whistles. Otherwise, save $100 and get a PS4."

That is basically what it boils down to. If you are in love with MS exclusives, then you should by all means get an Xbox.

If not, save yourself $100 and get the system that plays all of the other games better, the PS4.

Yep.  You're back to this:

When all else fails, attack the messenger....not the message. If you just want to throw around silly pics and names, then by all means have at it. Care to refute the review? The PS4 is $100 cheaper and plays the multiplatform games better. The XB1 has exclusives though and if you like them, then you should get the XB1. What is wrong in that statement?

Yeah, there are some people here that are VERY defensive over the XB1. I don't blame them, I'd be defensive as well and was when the shoe was on the other foot when they were kicking the PS3 all around this forum. It's kind of amusing seeing the Xbox crowd on the defensive after all the aggressive trash talking last generation. What goes around, comes around.

It's all good though. I may even get an XB1 tomorrow night. LOL....it's mine if I want it. I still don't know. It depends on Ryse reviews.

I don't understand this - you deliberately admit to trolling, baiting, etc, but it's all good because you want "the xbox crowd" (read some GT forum members) to be defensive? But it's all good now that you're doing the kicking? For every person you pigeonhole into being "of that crowd" who speaks up, there are others who don't speak up.

I've got more important things to do in my life than to satisfy duderandomguyoninternet who's already been banned once for this kind of behavior, and if you want to trash a product, open up a thread about it -this one here? It's about discussing it - but you've already pointed out that you have no interest in anything other than delivering some vengeful agenda.

Kick away.

Truthiness!

Where did I admit to trolling, baiting? I never said I wanted anyone to be defensive, I just found it funny that the people being so defensive now, were the ones that were attacking the PS3 so vehemently, last gen. Ironic is all.

I said "it's all good" as in "I don't care" about what peoples opinions are about the Xbox 1 or PS4. I don't let it get to me. I went down that road, the one that you appear to be going down, and it did not end well. Everything is not the attack you think it is. The Xbox 1 will be fine. Just breathe and let the chips fall where they may. The Xbox 1 is in for a rough go, it seems, but that doesn't mean that you just bought a $500 paperweight. I am sure that Dead Rising will be fun. I am hopeful that Ryse will be as well. If it gets good reviews tomorrow, I will probably get an Xbox One.

Yes I don't understand why you're being defensive either. I don't think anyone has spared Sony. Tons of people said that they wouldn't get the PS4 if it didn't have local streaming which as an extremely valid point.
Also, why are you expecting congratulations for good reviews? Did you make the game?

No storage management on the XB1:

Have you seen trying to upload a video of your gameplay without using the Kinect?? Sure, you can do it...but it is complex and requires multiple steps to do. The UI and basic System Functionality have been all designed around the Kinect.

seeing the ign raw video makes me a bit bummed.  the voice commands don't appear to work any better than they did in Kinect 1.0.  in fact, it felt pretty much exactly what I remember with Kinect 1.0.  it seems like half of the time, the commands need to be repeated.

From what I'm reading, there's a learning curve in figuring out how the Kinect wants to hear commands. If you just say "XboxForzaMotorsport5" it's not going to work and you're going to think it's non-responsive. You have to do a short pause after the Xbox to notify the unit you're about to issue the command. The IGN guy was running his words together quite often when it didn't respond. (Though I was surprised that even when he was running his words together it was still able to understand him quite often).

If you watch the video there were several times where the dude just wasn't using the right command. (For instance, saying "Xbox what's on MTV" before doing a Select).

Now I don't believe for a second that voice recognition is 100% perfect on the thing, but it is a machine and you can't blame it for not interpreting your intentions.

See, but this was the problem with the Kinect 1 and why the Kinect 2 seems to be no better. This is the real world, not a controlled environment where everyone knows exactly what to say and how to say it. In theory, the Kinect is awesome. In the real world...it sucks. Why MS insists on shoving the thing down everyone's throat, I don't know. It doesn't work.

Give me an Xbox One, without Kinect, for $399. That is what they should have done from the start.

No they shouldn't have.   The ps camera will be a failure for this very reason.

The Kinect will have solid support for the next 8 years.

So what if the PS Camera is a failure....it won't take the system down with it. It's optional and I have the choice to add it or not.

The Kinect on the other hand...that is basically required. To do simple things without it, like upload a video, requires a multitude of steps on the controller....you basically need a flow chart. With the Kinect, you just say 'Xbox Record That". Of course, the Xbox has to understand what you are saying...but the point is, the system was designed around the Kinect. Without it, it is a confusing mess.

If the Kinect fails, the Xbox One fails. It's as simple as that. They bet the farm on it.

I think you do care if MS stumbles.  You've shown that you have a preference for Sony and PS4 and that's fine, but if you think Sony's launch hasn't stumbled with system failures and PSN issues then you are just being blind

The PS4 has indeed had disappointing PSN performance in the first few days from what I've been reading (remember, I don't have any of these new consoles yet). I'm not ignoring it, it's just not a flaw in the PS4 itself, unlike the things I mentioned above. The system failures are, at least according to Sony, present in less than 1% of the sold systems and well within expected parameters, so those I am indeed ignoring, just as I will ignore reports of system failures for the Xbox One within those same parameters.

PSN performance has been bad, though not multiplayer or store performance....just some of the dynamic menu things, like the "What's New" thing and the dynamic Menus for the games. Other than the very first day, I have not had any problems downloading items from the store or playing multiplayer games. Works perfectly.

I'm excited for Friday, but I can see where some frustration will crop up using the voice features

Wow, that was not a flattering video at all.

Also, it takes 1 minute and 8 seconds to boot the machine?!?!? Ugh....glad I'm waiting. Hopefully they iron this stuff out, soon.
I thought it took 22 seconds? Obviously, both consoles are unfinished-that's what's so great about the whole thing. Look at the PS3 at the beginning of the generation and at the end. If Sony does the same with the PS4 then it will be the greatest console off all time by the end of this new gen.

I have to chuckle.    The PS4 launched less than a week ago to reviews that, based on about an hour of comparing late last night, were either equal or a notch below those of the Xbone.   Somehow that translates to some of you as the PS4 being the OMGZ GREATAST EVAR TROUNCE XBONEZZZZZZZZZzzzz #spittlethroughretainer.

I've read review after review of the Bone last night and they range from equal to a notch better than the PS4.

You have to remember that the Xbone is $100 more expensive. It seems that the $100 you are spending for a "premium" experience is wasted right now...since lots of the stuff is broken. I mean, did you see the IGN uncut demo video. That was pretty painful to watch. To say that voice recognition is broken, is an understatement. How in the world are you supposed to "snap" things (the thing that makes it worth $100 more than the PS4, according to some), when the Xbox can't figure out what you are saying?

I'm really tempted to get a Vita so I can try the remote play in my house.  I was waiting because it sounded too good to be true.

Yep, honestly this UI wins by default cause it is not Metro. I hate Metro on Windows 8 and I hate the look of it on the XB1. It's just like someone barfed a bunch of random squares all over my screen. Yuck. I really wish that MS would have done something different with the XB1.

My impressions after a weekend of play....

OH. MY. GOD.

This system is incredible.

First off lets get the bad out of the way: PSN was getting hammered this weekend. The "Whats New" page was blank for most of the weekend, but returned last night. Also, though my system has been running perfectly, I have heard that quite a few systems are going belly up. That is not good and this had better not turn into Red Ring of Death, Pt2.

Now, the good: Remote Play, Remote Play, Remote Play! Oh my god....this is incredible. I was excited for the prospect of remote play, but figured it would turn into what it was on the PS3...a lame, laggy mess that wasn't supported by 95% of the software released for the PS4. Oh my, was I wrong. This is incredible. First off, it is mandated by Sony for every single game on the PS4, that doesn't use the camera for control. That is very important. Devs have no choice but to include it. Secondly, it works perfectly. No lag at all. It's like the Wii U, except unlike the Wii U, it works while I am laying in bed! The Wii U's signal would cut out once I walked into my bedroom....but the PS4's remote play works....not only that, it works perfectly! I now have a portable PS4 that I can take anywhere in my house! I haven't tried it over the internet yet, but others have and it has worked pretty damn good. Last night I was watching Jeff Gerstmann from Giantbomb stream Need for Speed: Rivals on my PS4, via Remote play from my bed. It was awesome. This was how it went: I saw he was streaming from my "What's New" page, clicked on that and jumped right over to his "Live From Playstation" broadcast....all via Remote Play. Simple, easy and effective.

The UI itself is awesome. I love the look and the simplicity. Has all the social stuff I want....and none of the clutter. No sorting options yet, which is a big omission....but I am sure that sorting of your Library will be added in the future. I love the trophy rarity thing. Adds another level to trophy collecting. There is an awesome foundation here...and it's only going to be getting better. I can't wait to see what they do in the future with the system.

So yesterday I had a horrible experience. I wanted to play the PS4 and watch the Ohio State Game at the same time. Since the PS4 doesn't have a snap button, I actually had to hit the input button on my TV to switch in between. IT WAS HORRIBLE. I didn't panic though because I remembered that just like all TVs made since 1996 my TV has picture in picture. So I turned that on, but then I soon realized that having a tiny screen in the corner blocking my view from the main action sucks. So then I remembered that I have a Vita and I could use use remote play and watch the game on my TV at the same time. Problem solved.

Damn that Sony for only focusing on the games.

For real though the Vita remote play is AWESOME. I played about 3 hours of it on my Vita yesterday and as long as your router has a strong signal it is flawless.

Yep, Remote play has been incredible. It works way better than I thought it would. Being able to play my PS4 games while others are watching TV has been an incredible experience!  smile

I'm not sure I really like the interface for the PS4.    It's still early, but I'm starting to decide that it's underwhelming me.

I am finding I like it much more than the XMB from PS3.  Much faster navigation to the things I want to get to.

Agreed. I am loving this UI. Clean and simple. Once PSN stops being hammered, the activity feed and other social things should start working better.

I have the game, but I haven't played it yet. It's on the docket for tomorrow though smile

XB1 media features appeal really depends on how much you watch live TV.

Yeah, that is pretty much the only thing that the XB1 has over the PS4. As far as the snap thing...that is just going to annoy the crap out of me. I don't want crap on my screen that is not related to what I am playing. If I want to look up something while playing I can just use my iPad or click the PS button and go to the web browser on the PS 4....the click the PS button again and I am right back in my game.

I don't know, Snap....to me.....is a waste of 10% of the GPU power. I want Dead Rising 3 to run at 30fps without Snap....not 20 something with Snap.

I am willing to have a larger sized box that provides a full featured entertainment system that integrates into my living room.

Let's call these two systems for what they are:

PS4:  Turbo charged PS3 (in terms of not expanding really on the feature set) that is capable of next gen gaming, but is focused only on gaming.   Developer friendly architecture.
Xbone:  Next gen gaming device that also provides living room/entertainment center integration and multitasking

PS4's target audience was hardcore gamers that don't care about the integration and just want to game
Xbone's target audience is broader and less specific, and seeks to draw in people who would be interested in exercise, entertainment system integration features, family gaming, etc

There is room for both.   In fact I'm thankful we will have both.

I take exception to that. I will use my PS4 as my primary Netflix and Crunchyroll player, as well as my primary Blu-ray and DVD player. AND on top of that you don't have to pay for PS+/GOLD in order to actually use netflix. So how is the PS4 not an entertainment device as well as a gaming device?

Exactly.

PSN servers are definitely already having issues.   My PS3 update failed halfway through the download.   That's the 6th time it's failed.

People tonight that didn't download the patch are going to be hurting unless they can get those servers stable.

Yeah, the PSN servers are having issues. I had no problems downloading the firmware this morning around 6AM Central....but the store downloads are timing out. At least it is able to resume a download with no issues at all. I've got Battlefield 4 about half way downloaded now and COD about the same. Resogun and Contrast are downloaded and installed. smile

My problem is that the updates won't pick up where they left off.  It starts over and thus fails.

I'm glad I grabbed the update a couple days ago.

Yeah, I don't think you can resume the firmware update. I had the update ready to go on a USB stick just in case, but shockingly enough....it downloaded and updated on the first go. It was pretty fast as well.

I was talking about just normal PSN Store downloads for the resume download feature.
