3721  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Bethesda guarantees Oblivion for XBox 360 launch on: September 30, 2005, 12:35:17 AM
Here is a direct quote from the new EGM that is just now getting to subscribers:

Quote
What could possibly go wrong? Despite the fact that its developer guarantees that we'll see Oblivion on shelves alongside the 360 hardware on day one, a few nasty bugs are still infecting its mammoth fantasy. "There is a unicorn in the game, and the other day when I was playing I found it dead," explains Howard. "The Minotaur killed it; he's supposed to protect it, but his A.I. is just too aggro." If the game's inhabitants can't get along, is there any hope for players? Massive patches, bug-fixes, and even recalls happen surprisingly frequently in the realm of PC games, but nobody wants to bring home a busted, buggy, and potentially crash-ridden console game on launch day.

Heh, anyone think that Take-Two is strong-arming Bethesda and making them get this thing out the door? Or do you think they really are going to be done?

I think it will be pretty much done on time. Hopefully they will be allowed to patch any bugs via Xbox Live, if there are any.
3722  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [360] Top 5 Launch Day Games according to EGM on: September 29, 2005, 09:51:45 PM
The new EGM is just arriving now and the cover story is all on the Xbox 360 launch.

Here are the top 5 games for launch day according to them:

#1 Pefect Dark Zero
#2 Project Gotham Racing 3
#3 Call of Duty 2
#4 Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion
#5 DOA 4
3723  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New Info on Madden 360 from EGM on: September 29, 2005, 09:37:02 PM
From the TeamXbox forums:

Quote
I'm scanning through it now and hear this. Madden and Al Michaels will not be the commentators for the 360 version. They say the no name announcer not announcers will call the game like he works for the teams local radio station. Saying he'll sound more emotional when you make a great play. But the ask madden feature is still in the game.

They also have a small section saying "why next gen madden ain't all that." It will not have owner or superstar mode. No classic teams and no create a player.

Some other stuff while scanning through. If you have surround sound you can hear a defender's footsteps and his heavy breathing behind you.

There is a part talkin about the stadiums how they even have the sun worn seats that have faded due to the sun being on them all the time. The staduims mow lines will be correct. Pittsburgh's grass degrades faster than other staduims.

They talk about the sidelines how the players and coaches react on a big play when you run down your sideline and they start jumping up and down. There are about 4,000 animations in this version which is about double what we get on current gen. Each team will have 2 or 3 players with specific animations. Ball spikes you see ya lineman rushing to the line. Recievers crying for pass interference calls and you can finally jump over the pile.

Ea went to NASA for weather data so now we should get exact shadows and where they fall in the staduim and there should be no excuse why the shadows are wrong. The parts of the field that get the most work will degrade more then the rest.

They now have access to the nfl films vault so players now sound like themselves. Peyton sounds like Peyton when he calls out audibles. Ray Lewis sounds lime himself calling out defensive checks. Does say how many players voices will make the cut though. Blocking should sound like real blocking now and tackles sounds like tackles.

200 key players heads were scanned. There will be about 200 accessories for players but no hand warmer pouches. EA says "next year"

Did you get the Oblivion DVD that they have been handing out at the recent trade shows? It has a bunch of new footage on it and making-of stuff.

They were handing them out at the Gamestop conference as well as some others...

Welp...  My wife is going to get the 360 for me for Christmas.   After seeing the $400 price tag, I figured all hope had been lost.....  but I sold some stuff on Ebay and gave her $200 towards it, so it will be tucked under my tree this season.    The downside is that I'll have to wait until December 25th for it....  but the upside I suppose is you guys will be able to report to me which games are worth buying (or asking for for Christmas).

Yes.... she preordered the Top O the Line one.... which I'm thankful for!

Now I'm very excited about this holiday season already!   WOOT!

Awesome!  biggrin

I'll be getting a bunch of launch games and will of course have full impressions of each one.

Ahhh!  I remember way back during the build up to the first Xbox launch.    You and I were Xbox staunch defenders together Hetz.   Before the elections.... before the politics....

Remember that?   Here we are again at long last.    Back in the day my wife and I were newly married and lived in a small house an hour south of where I live now.      I remember her watching in awe as I cranked up Halo for the first time....  she enjoyed just watching me play it.

Those were simpler times, and I can't believe it's been as long as it has.
Here's to an upcoming VERY merry christmas!  smile

Ahh, yes. The good ol' days. Time sure flies when you are having fun! smile

I look forward to the more good times as we hold down the Xbox 360 fort this Winter against the horde of Revolution/PS3 fans! slywink

3727  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Gaming Hours Per Week? on: September 28, 2005, 03:14:45 PM
I game anywhere from 10 to 20+ hrs a week, depending on what games I have on my plate.

I am married, have 2 children (3 years old and almost 1) and have a house. I also have a 40 hour a week job, but live about 5 minutes away from it, so that saves a bunch of time as far as commuting goes.

I also don't watch hardly any TV, except on Sundays.
3728  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What are you buying this week? (9/26) on: September 27, 2005, 03:23:47 PM
I did want Lunar, but the reviews have scared me away,

I will get the Midway and Capcom collections.

I'll be honest and say I don't know how likely people will be able to get an Xbox 360 by Christmas if it isn't on pre-order or if you don't stalk stores like Best Buy, Target, Circuit City, etc. like a hawk after release.  The PS2 was in super short supply (whether done by Sony purposefully or not is totally up to how you feel) the year it came out at Christmastime even though it had a 1 month jump on the Xbox 360 this year (it came in October).

Heck, even the Nintendo DS was in super shoirt supply around the holidays when it was released. I honestly think that if you don't get one in the first 2-3 days after launch, unless you are lucky, you will have a very hard time finding them before Christmas....especially since the 360 is launching mere days away from the biggest shopping day of the year.

I asked Ron if I could change my name, he graciously said yes, and he requested that I post an announcement about it so people would know (thats what I meant when I said request in the other thread Foxy). So yeah, thats me.

Hetz-I was making a joke, you know, obviously?

I ment alt as in you go by other names on other forums, so I was wondering if you had changed your name to something else on this forum....which you did.

Anyway, Microsoft will make it official on Oct 3rd when they announce the official launch lineup for North America.

Well you might be the last to know. I imagine I will know before that though biggrin

How? Are you psychic?

I doubt he's psychic, but he is a good real-life friend of the Executive Producer (hope I got the title right) for the game (kathode).

kathode is an associate producer on the game, as far as I know. I believe that Todd Howard is the executive producer of the game.

Oh, is Calvin one of Rage's (Cenk's) many alt's? I know that he is a friend of kathode, but I didn't know he changed his name to Calvin.

Also, I don't keep up much on Oblivion, so if they said it was for sure a launch title then that is news I do not know.

They didn't yet (they are waiting until Oct 3rd to let Microsoft make the official word), but the Official Xbox Mag talked to them and they confirmed it was a launch day game.

It is also listed as a 99% confirmed launch day game in the official 360 launch guide.

Just got this from the IGN Xbox 360 forum:

Quote
So I get a call today from my EB telling me I need to preorder a game with my XB360 or my hardware preorder gets cancelled (per Corporate request). I told the guy I didn't know what I wanted to get yet, so I want to wait for reviews. He then told me "well we'll have to cancel the preorder then."

That is just so lame. He went on with some crap excuse like there will be a shortage of extra controllers and a big shortage of games so I should preorder. When has Microsoft ever had a big shortage of software for their system?

Anyway, this made me mad, big-time. I'm heading to Best Buy to preorder it there and at least get Rewardzone points etc, and ease of return if my 360 is broken. Plus I won't get yelled at to preorder games. If EB wanted me to preorder a "bundle" (which this is), they shouldn't have let me preorder a system only.

What a crock.

Heh, you keep telling yourself that!

I thought the same way you did, until the PS2 launch.  I got to Best Buy at 9PM thinking I will just check to see if there is any line...well there was and it was already 30 people long....and this is not a big town. So I camped out all night to get it. By morning the line was all the way around the store and only the first 50 people got a PS2. I vowed....never again. So I now preorder, no matter what.

Now, I am not saying that the PS2 and Xbox 360 launches are the same, but the 360 has more in common with that launch than the Xbox.

When I went into Gamestop last week they told me if I didn't put down $5 on the games/accessories that I wanted I would only have the Xbox 360 on the 22nd and no games to play. They said the games etc would be in very tight allocation.

I put $5 down on DOA4 and Madden 360 and also an extra wireless controller, since I KNOW that controllers will be impossible to find on launch day. They always are.

For the record, from what Hetz posted above-sure, the 360 shots are clearly superior. Everything from the facial structures to the bodies to the apparent texture count, clarity and smoothness, and especially the lighting and the level of detail is superior. But to be fair again, this looks like very early, let's call it first generation PS3 hardware work. I am sure we haven't seen anythign near what the final hardware will be able to do.

Have you actually seen the MGS4 trailer itself?  While I don't think the 360 shots are "clearly superior" (I think its a wash), I thought the MGS4 animation and attention to detail (Field of View effects, heat distortion, particiles, etc) made it more impressive in motion than Gears of War, which is really saying something considering how far ahead GoW is from any of the other next gen footage we've seen.

Consdiering that MGS4 was a CUTSCENE, not gameplay like Gears of War footage, I think it is a little unfair to compare things like animation and attention to detail.

Why should I say anything about the PS3 now? It's a year away!

The Xbox 360 is out in 2 months. That is why I am excited about that now, when it gets closer to the PS3 launch, I will get excited about that as well.

I just think the whole "MGS4 has the best graphics ever!" is a bunch of bull. It doesn't look that much better than what is going to be available for the Xbox 360, in fact I think it looks a little worse.

The PS3 will be great, but it's not that much better (if any) than the 360.

This is from the most recent Game Informer. He doesn't call out a specific person but he said that anybody even suggesting that the PS3 and 360 are close to the same level from a technical standpoint is on crack. He claims that the PS3 is far and away more powerful than the 360 and it's stupid for anyone to suggest otherwise.  (taken from the Gaming-Age forums)

Don't make it so easy to sound like a fanboy, Hetz.

3754  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The Exorcism of Emily's Audience on: September 18, 2005, 06:37:57 PM
Quote from: "whiteboyskim"
So FH and I check out "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" tonight and both really like it. The exorcism sequence itself, I think, actually bests the only true comparison, and that's the final battle itself from "The Exorcist." But if I had a cross and was a holy man myself, I would have turned the Wrath of God™ on the audience itself.

Good Lord, what is it about modern audiences doing one or all of the following while at a movie theater? 1) keeping their cell phones on so they can answer and talk on them while in a movie theater surrounded by people who paid to see a movie and not listen to them gab on the phone; 2) people who bring children 10 and younger to a film that is by no means appropriate for them, but the adults want to see it so they drag their kids while telling them "just look away if it gets too scary"; 3) shouting back at the movie screen when something really sudden or very intense or both happens; 4) people laughing immediately after something scary to try and diffuse the tension

Fuck all of you. May you all bleed out and die horribly you ignorant assholes.

In case you've not heard, during the Telluride Film Festival, an ordinance was passed that made movie theaters "sacred places" wherein you could neither talk on your phone, talk out during the film, or basically be an asshole just like all the people FH and I saw the movie with tonight. Apparently, some of the violators of said ordinance were fairly high and mighty celebrities who were offended when ushers were right in their faces demanding that they respect "the sacred place" by shutting the fuck up.

To those celebrities - STFU.

This is an ordinance that needs to be passed in every city in America. If you do not respect it and respect other people who paid to watch the film in the theater, then your ass will be thrown out into the street with no refund. Hollywood wonders why people aren't going to theaters as much as they used to, and tonight I have verification of one reason among many. Laugh when it's funny, cry out if it's scary, but otherwise you need to STFU.

Oh yeah, the movie itself was a solid B+ in my book. The build-up was beyond intense, I liked how they at least tried to look at both sides of it equally, and the exorcism itself was a textbook example of how stereo sound can be used to scare the crap out of the audience. This is one of those moments that sound affeciandos will use in the future to test their home theater systems.

Good movie that I heartily recommend waiting at least two more weeks before checking out. Let the fools thin out, then go see it with someone who enjoys a movie that will make them think and make them jump out of their chair.

And movie studios are wondering why box office #'s have been going down...

I'll just watch everything on my 56" Widescreen setup, thank you very much.

Welcome to Madden NFL 06 for the Xbox 360.

With Microsoft recently announcing a launch date of November 22 we can now start showing off more of the product we have been working on over the past year or so. The Xbox 360 version of Madden NFL 06 is really starting to come together and I’m very excited about it. To me, the game really is looking, playing and feeling "next gen." Back in April we showed you some video of what we thought this game could be like and with each day of development that passes, I am more and more encouraged that we will be able to meet or exceed that target.

We still have several weeks left in development, so what we are releasing now not final yet; but I do want to confirm that all screens are captured from the game engine and not pre-rendered. You will see this level of quality and more in the final product. As things like player sizes/builds and different weather/lighting conditions become fully tuned you will begin to see these great graphics come to life in all situations. We'll soon see what the Giants at Eagles at night, in the snow looks like in real-time in this new engine and can't wait to share that with you. Of course, Madden isn't just about great graphics; we will deliver a many innovations in game play with an animation system driven by over three times the number of animations as previous versions of Madden. We're also planning on bringing franchise mode to the Xbox 360 with a whole new way to access information that franchise players will really enjoy.

They only let me share two screens this week, so we picked two that both show off the detail of this game, but in different ways. The first is a close-up of Saints QB Aaron Brooks focusing down field. We took this shot a ultra high resolution, so I hope that makes it out to you, if it does, you will notice stubble on the players’ faces and even reflection in the player eyes. Without doubt, the player faces are the most faithful reproductions we’ve ever done. Additionally the detail on essentials like the football and helmets are incredible. There are more polys in our next gen helmet than there were in the complete player from previous versions of Madden. Each NFL team helmet has the accurate paint style (notice the metallic paint of the Saints), and we have exact models of all the various helmet styles and facemask types worn in the NFL. The football is detailed down to the last pimple on the ball, and it has its own reflective properties.

In the second screen of Manning and Harrison at the Bengals, we show even more detail in the player uniforms, helmets and faces. Check out the different helmets on the Colts teammates, as well as the reflection on this sunny day scene. You also get a glimpse of our full 3-D crowd who are individually placed in each individual seat in the stadium accurately. We probably wouldn't normally show a screen shot of the back of a player's head, but this one caught my eye and felt very realistic.

In game, the players come alive with facial animation and NFL Films on-field audio, which adds a whole new level of authenticity to the game.

You will soon be seeing a lot more screens and videos as we get ready to start football season again in November. Also, be sure to check out the November issue (on sale October 4th) of EGM, which has the first detailed information and impressions of the game from their visit to our studios several weeks ago.

I've got to say...those shots look pretty damn good. That Burger King video was from a very early build of the game, this is closer to what the final game will look like.

Got this from over at Gaming Age, where the Nintendo Fanboys are NOT happy about the controller...and you know you have problems when the Nintendo fanboys don't even like it.

This is one of the worst ideas ever from Nintendo. It looks a pain to have to push all the buttons or play anything. The general public is going to laugh when they see  this and pass it by. Virtual Boy Part Deux.
