Ive not been to P.F. Chang's, but I've eaten in two other restauraunts owned and operated by the same company - Z-Tejas (generic Tex-Mex) and Flemings (high-end steakhouse). Both places were trendy, packed, and offered mediocre food at top market prices.

I was actually considering trying PF Changs, only because I've yet to find a good Chinese restaurant in Tucson, but after my previous experiences and what I read here, I'll pass.

You can also tell Trump is really annoyed that the little gimmick of being able to bring 3 people into the boardroom as opposed to 2 has been an utter failure. I don't think ANYBODY has brought three people in yet so far - am I wrong?

If you think abou it, why would anybody ever bring in 3 people? That's just one more person you have to defend against. In almost every case, the person brough in turns against the PM, so why expand that, unless there is a very good reason.

Exactly. Trump talks like he fires people at random (though it does seem like it, sometimes), so the more in the room the better your odds of survival.  If that's the case, let's just have the losing team draw straws.

Maybe I'm dense, but I don't see the logic of your argument. What is the point of advertisers being scared away? Usually the ISP would host that type of page for no cost at all

I wasn't aware that a notice like that could be put up for free, but still:

If I were an advertiser, I would be wary of returning to any medium (not just a website) that the owner turned on or off at will.  If GE decided to yank NBC programming  for a week, how long would it take to regain the viewership lost during the week it was down?  And as an advertiser, how would I know GE won't do it again  next month?  And the month after that?

As far as revenue goes, putting up that notice would be just like starting GoneGold all over again, and I think we can safely assume Rich is not up for that.
12  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / The Apprentice - 10/14 - There Be Spoilers Here on: October 15, 2004, 01:31:29 PM
I don't think John's selections were personal. I got the feeling he felt  (probably correctly) bringing both Kevin and Wes in would lead to his getting ganged up on, so he needed a sacrificial lamb.  Unfortunately he chose poorly (tm Spielberg).

Trump and Caroline couldn't have made their intentions any clearer if they had held up signs that read "Bring in Raj, dumbass!" Too bad for John that he failed to read the room.

A lame reward? Lamer than Rudy Guiliani or John Macinroe?(Although Raj being pelted with tennis balls was kind of amusing). All the rewards have sucked this season.

If this episode seemed duller, it's only because the boardroom lacked the 3rd-grade-level catfighting, finger-pointing, and name calling we've gotten used to.  The men actually conducted  themselves like professionals, which is probably why there is no extended footage being shown this week.

(edited because I lose 20 IQ points just watching the women of "Appex")

As far as the gist of this thread, I don't see why a simple page could have been put up that said Gone Gold Down for the foreseeable future.

One thing we know for sure is advertising revenue was paying for the site. How many advertisers would a notice like that scare away? How about all of them.  Then Rich would have to pay out of pocket for a site he no longer wanted to maintain.
14  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / So, anyone ever had a sleep study? on: October 15, 2004, 11:45:57 AM
I had sleep apnea, and went through two sleep studies - when it was diagnosed, and again to confirm that it had been cured.

First of all, the study itself - not too bad. They  tape about a dozen sensors to head, chest, wrists, etc. to monitor breathing, heart rate, etc.  It takes a little while to get comfortable enough to sleep, but you adjust pretty quickly.

If you do have sleep apnea, there are several treatments available. If you are heavy, it may just be a matter of diet.  Sleep apnea is often weight-related. Next step is sleeping with a C-PAP, which is an oxygen mask attached to a compressor that forces air down your nose. If the testers think you have apnea, they'll wake you to strap one on and see if it helps. Hope you don't mind sounding like Darth Vader.

My ex-wife thought that the compressor was more annoying than my snoring, so the next step (and most people don't need this) is surgery. Some people have a uvula (that little piece of tissue that hangs down in the back of your throat) that is too big.  That was my problem. Most people can have it shaved a bit with laser surgery, but that wouldn't have worked for me. I had a UPP, which is conventional surgery removing most of the uvula.  That is the most radical treatment for sleep apnea, and doesn't happen too often.

The surgery wasn't bad, but recovery was awful.  For about a week, whenever I swallowed, it felt like I was trying to swallow a golf ball studded with steel spikes. The pain medication made it feel like I was trying to swallow a golf ball without the spikes.  This was all 7 years ago, and to this day swallowing still feels a little weird.

This all sounds bad, but the first time you wake up in the morning feeling rested and refreshed instead of exhausted, you realize it's all worth it.

Good luck.

"Burnett? This is Trump.  I'm sick and tired of seeing those whining bitches in the boardroom week after week!  Come up with a task these dumb bimbos can actually win, or your ass is grass!"

Seriously, last week poor Pamela was set up, and now the entire men's team - no doubt to create more interest and make it appear a contest.  As one of the buyers said (quite hilariously) "How many successful straight male fashion designers  are there?" It also didn't help that the designer obviously had nothing but contempt for the guys on the team, and that Raj is turning out to be a big pain in the ass.

It was refreshing to see a PM actually take responsibility for the mistakes that were made, instead of passing them off on other people.  That said, I think John blew it completely when Trump asked why he brought Andy in and he just sat there with a stupid look on his face.

Oh, and watching Maria eat a hot dog has put me off sex for a month.  Plus she's immune next  week. Ay yi yi!

True enough.  And it's unfortunate that the needs of the community differed with what Rich needed. But if Rich chose what was best for his own peace of mind (and this is still all speculation, obviously) as opposed to what was best for everyone else, I can't really blame the guy for choosing to do what was best for Rich.

Oh, and I will personally put a contract out on the first Trekkie to start blabbing about the needs of the many outweighing the needs of the few.

No knowledge has been lost, not really.  The knowledge is still in the heads of the forum members that originally posted it, or elsewhre on-line (want to know about the episodes of Buffy? I'm sure there are other forums discussing it).  What was lost was the CONVENIENCE of having everything in one place. If the NYC library closed tomorrow, would the great literature of the world be lost? No, because it is availabe elsewhere.  You just have to look harder for it.

I didn't mean to make you a target, and I don't think I ever used the word whining. Nothing I said was directed at you personally. The woulda-coulda-shoulda comment was not even about this particularly thread, but ALL the "wtf?" threads here and on other boards.

While old-timers might have respected Rich's decision to just shut 'er down, and left the guy in peace, we both know that towards the end, GG attracted SOME (not all) new members who lacked maturity - certainly the maturity to accept Rich's wishes.

The longer this debate goes on, the more convinced I am that Rich did the right thing in not giving adance notice.  Here it is, a week after the plug was pulled, and this forum is still being flooded with woulda-coulda-shoulda posts.

Obviously Rich prefers to have no communication with the community, probably due to emotional baggage associated with the site. If there had been notice, how many emails/phone calls/letters/telegrams/carrier pigeons would he have gotten begging him to either a)keep the site open or b)hand it over to someone else. Hundreds? Thousands?

The last thing he probably needed or wanted was badgering about what to do with his baby.  For the sake of his own peace of mind, I think he did the right thing.

For a ton of info on Sylvia Browne and the James Randi Educational Foundation go  to:http://www.randi.org/sylvia/index.shtml.

For those too young to know,  in the 60's and 70's James Randi was one of the world's leading professional magicians, performing as the Amazing Randi.  For the last 20 years or so, he has devoted himself to traveling around the world exposing phony "psychics", "spiritualists", "faith healers", etc. His  first major success was Uri Geller, who claimed to be able to bend spoons and forks using "mind power". Randi would follow him on all the talk shows and demonstrate how it was a simple parlor trick. Geller hasn't been heard from since.

His foundation has $1 million in escrow for anyone who can prove to a panel of scholars and experts that they are a legitimate psychic.  So far, no one has ever claimed the money.

Very interesting guy with a great website.

It was a lot clearer on Saturday why Pamela deserved to be fired.

If NBC is going to do this, why not just break the show up like American Idol - have the task be the focus of the first night, with the cliffhanger being the winning team, and devote the second to the boardroom.

With all the hoo-hah I forgot all about Columbus Day. So in honor of the occasion - a little Randy Newman:

The Great Nations of Europe had gathered on the shore
They'd conquered what was behind them and now they wanted more
So they looked to the mighty ocean and took to the Western sea
The great nations of Europe in the 16th century

Hide your wives and daughters, hide the groceries too
The great nations of Europe comin through

The Grand Canary Islands first land to which they came
They slaughtered all the canaries there which gave the land its name
There were natives there called Guanches, Guanches by the score
Bullets, disease,  the Portugese, they weren't there any more

Now they're gone, they're gone, they're really gone
You never seen anyone so gone
There's pictures in a museum, some lines written in a book
But you won't find a live one, no matter where you look

Hide your wives and daughters, hide the groceries too
The great nations of Europe comin through

Columbus sailed for India, found Salvador instead
He shook hands with some Indians,  and soon they all were dead
They got tb and typhoid and athletes foot, diptheria and the flu
'Scuse me great nations comin through

Balboa found the Pacific, and on the trail one day
He met some friendly Indians whom the Church told him were gay
Soooooooooooooo
He had them torn apart by dogs, on religious grounds they say
The great nations of Europe were quite holy in their way

Now they're gone, they're gone, they're really gone
You never seen anyone so gone
Some bones hidden in a canyon, some paintings in a cave
They're no use tryin to save them, there's nothin left to save

Hide your wives and daughters, hide your sons as well
With the great nations of Europe you never can tell

Now you and I are standing on the end of a century
Europes have sprung up everywhere, as any one can see
But there on the horizon is the possiblity
Some bug from out of Africa might come for you and me
Destroying everything in it's path,  from sea to shining sea
Like the great nations of Europe in the 16th century

I'd be all for us somehow organizing some way to say thanks to him. We can all get pissed over this, or show some class and gratitude for what he gave us out of his own pocket. There's no way I'll believe that Rich wants it to be this way.

I don't know about that.  Rich has made it very clear that for whatever reason (probably too much emotional baggage) he has no interest in contact with the GG community at this time. I say respect his wishes and leave the guy alone.  Maybe an email from ONE PERSON saying here's where to find us, and leave it up to him to reach out when the time is right.

As an old timer, two fond memories stick out:

For years, I thought I was the only fool  to gauge the value of a game by the weight of the box and contents. The first time Rich mentioned the "lift test", I knew I was home.

My first 3 years or so on GG were spent on the home page, GBT,  the release schedule, and Joel Mathis' column (I just wish I could remember the damn name). Joel deserves a shout-out, wherever he may be. His take on Ultima IX was classic.

It just popped into my head - The Hot Sheet
39  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Blind date finale on: October 11, 2004, 02:57:04 PM
Similar to an experience I had with someone I met on match.com.  We went out 3 times, had a great time and I thought things were just humming along. We had plans for a fourth date, when out of the blue I get an email saying, in effect, "You're a great guy, but I'm getting back with my old boyfriend".  One week later she was back on match.com.

About two months after this, I needed her help for a project for work that I knew she could offer some assistance in. I dropped her a line saying I hope she was well, etc., and could she help on a project for a couple of hours.  I got no reply at all. It's not as though I was stalking her, or begging her to come back.  I just needed her to help for a couple of hours.

Women. If I understood them I'd still be married.
