The wife and I finally got back from our Thanksgiving trip to Pittsburgh last night and had a chance to set up Rock Band.  First we had to give the dogs a bath after picking them up from the kennel, then grabbed a quick bite, and while Jaime was unpacking our stuff upstairs I worked on unpacking everything.    icon_eek

It looked like Christmas morning in my living room with plastic bags and pieces of cardboard strewn all about.  It took me about a half hour to unpack everything, set up the drums, read through the manual (very quickly) and get ready to give the game a test run.  Even though we've seen the intro video a 1000 times, we still watched it all the way through until "Rock Band" faded onto the screen.  Then "Press Start" came up and we both giggled with anticipation.

The very first thing I did was go through the drum tutorial.  It was definitely worth the time as it cleared up any potential for confusion.  And then I was off to play my first song.  How could it possibly be anything but Wanted Dead or Alive?  Even though it was a relatively easy song to play, it was pure, unadulterated fun.  And once the crowd started singing along I just about peed myself.  Amazing.

Then Jaime wanted to go through the singing tutorial.    icon_confused   She has been talking about the drums for months, but now it seems that she has been hiding her secret desire to sing.  After the tutorial she wanted to give Say It Ain't So a try as a team as she had been "practicing" singing along to the song anytime it has been on the radio.  I took up my seat behind the drums and she grabbed the mic.  At first we were somewhat subdued, with me lightly tapping out the drum parts while she sat on the couch and sang quietly.  But by the chorus she was standing up with the mic cord wrapped around her hand belting out the lyrics and I was almost bouncing up and down in my drum chair.  We had so much fun that we played another song together.  And then another.  And another.  And as songs completed downloading we played them as well.  What was intended to be a quick 1/2 hour play session turned into four straight hours of virtual rock and roll.

Jaime pretty consistently finished with 100% on lyrics (we were both playing on Easy), and I was usually in the mid to high 90's.  But I certainly learned that the drums are hard.  I gave Medium a try and was quickly booed off stage.  I will definitely have to pay my dues on Easy before being able to tackle anything on Medium or higher.  But, I had the same problem the first time I played Guitar Hero, so hopefully I'll be able to get a little better on the drums with practice.  By the end of the night I was doing much better, so all it will probably take is a little time and practice.  Jaime didn't  feel ready to try Medium on vocals, especially on songs she wasn't very familiar with, but she was shocked at how well she did and can't wait to continue on as our band's lead singer.    icon_eek   She was terrified of singing at first, and now you can't get the mic out of her hand.

I had fairly high expectations of this game, and every one of them has been met, and then some.  Even though we play a fair bit of MP games with friends, nothing has been this much fun to play in a group.  My wife and I had so much fun playing with just the two of us.  I can only imagine how much fun it will be to play with a few others.

Our party on Saturday is going to ROCK!  We have around 20 confirmed with a few more working on scheduling (two of our friends are trying to get out of a wedding, for a Rock Band party).  Saturday is going to be ridiculous.

I'd love to have a guest spot for a song during your party Pete, see if you can't squeeze one in slywink

I dunno if I'm just gettin better or if all the real players are on vacation this week, but I've equaled my best streak of 15 3 times in the past two sessions.  I've also matched my match best in kills (31) twice in the past two sessions.

I've now got 600 more kills than I do deaths- a number I could have never dreamed of Haloz.

Huzzah COD4!

Eventually you'll catch my streak of 31... or not slywink  (hey, you named the thread, I'm just partaking!)

9008  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Rock Band - What is your band name? on: November 24, 2007, 05:20:18 PM
Are you confusing the musician name with the band name?  When you do the solo tours it's asking for the musician's name.  When you go into Band World Tour, it wants a band name.
9009  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Rock Band Impressions! on: November 24, 2007, 05:57:49 AM
Ron made some NAT adjustments and I was able to play with him as well.  Some games just seem overly picky and it's kind of pick and choose which ones tag the people with less than open NAT.  COD4 is one that's giving a lot of people issues as well.
9010  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Rock Band - What is your band name? on: November 24, 2007, 02:46:45 AM
I didn't have to create a band name for every tour, only for the Band World Tour, not the solo ones.

I still have plenty of challenges to do though :|

I got a few in my last game the other night. Like the "Extreme Cruelty" and "Collateral Damage". Those are for killing the entire enemy team without dying and killing two enemies with one sniper rifle shot, respectively.

I admit there's a part of me that feels like I should do it just to keep the game a bit more fresh, but the other part wants to finish all those challenges in the Killer and Elite tiers.

I was so ticked that I killed two people with a sniper shot in the same round that I levelled up and unlocked the challenge and thus didn't get credit.
9013  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: I'm Coming For You Harkonis! (COD4 Stats) on: November 23, 2007, 06:38:34 PM
I think you of all people should go for prestige mode Thin, you are so much better than myself and could soar through them all in no time.  You out-stat me in every category by far.  I had to go prestige because I missed the level up sounds and effects and the game became 'just another shooter' when I didn't have the challenges to go for.  Once I hit 55 Prestige 9 I'll be done and can focus on what I want to kill most with.  I also play with a lot of friends of varying skill levels and they get a kick out of having more guns than me when I reset slywink

* New clan support - will be able to launch clan games direct from dashboard, can “fold” friends into new clan category in friends list

that's pretty odd.  I'd have to guess it's an incompatibility in this game with NAT settings, but it's the only thing I can think of.  Which mode are you trying to MP?

Well, my guitar started acting funny earlier today and now it's almost unplayable.  it strums of its own accord sometimes, strums whenever I use the whammy bar, and strums as I try to sustain notes.  At first I thought it might just be me but a more capable Guitar Hero player than I grabbed it, tried it on a song, and confirmed my fears.

I registered with the support site and should get a coffin and replacement sometime after the holiday.

My general thoughts on the guitar issues notwithstanding:

I love the size and length of it, the length of the whammy bar, the recessed fret buttons, but think it feels cheap, and don't like that they used the 'greasy' style plastic for the neck.  I really like the effects switch and wish my GH Les Paul controller had the same.

My general thoughts on the game:

I LOVE it, but there are some glaring issues that drive me nuts.  The menu UIs are not very well thought out, it would be nice if one character I make could do more than just one instrument, and trying to play online with people on my friends list is apparently impossible.  Why the hell does the manual spout the generic XBL text and not actually tell us step by step how to fucking play online?  Guitar Hero III was guilty of this as well.

Oh, and, uh, I have REALLY taken to the singing aspect of the game, which has surprised the everliving shit out of me  icon_eek

I've had no problems at all playing with friends on my list online.  What problem are you having?

On a related note, does anybody's headset work when plugged into the drum set?

Mine does. You just have to tweak the connection by turning it in the jack until it works.  It's very touchy.  And you're using the adapter right?

I've been reading these impressions and it strikes me how easy you guys are going on this game.  Tweak the headset jack?  Online not working?  Guitars breaking after a couple hours?  So many people here were lashing out at Guitar Hero for the same things, but Rock Band gets a free pass?

It's not a free pass so much as there is so much that works that people are willing to overlook things that don't and are being worked on.  GH3 simply didn't have the 'good' going for it that RB does.  I can ignore a smudge on a gold nugget easier than even trying to look past a smudge on a turd slywink

Mine works fine, you really have to make sure it's pushed all the way in and that the adapter it came with is pushed all the way on.  If not you'll get nothing and you'll be transmitting extremely loud static that annoys greatly slywink

It doesn't matter what slot the mic is in, all that matters is you turn on a non-instrument controller.  The game automatically makes normal controllers vocalists.

I've plugged in the hub but can't get the lights to come on for the drums or the guitar now.
I've had a hell of a time with getting things to register through the hub.  On another note my guitar stopped working properly after about 3 hours.  Now it double strums every time causing every streak to break and the game to fail immediately.  I'm very pissed.

The nice thing about the AK with the silencer is the iron sights view is far less intrusive than some of the other assault rifles and the damage on it is good. It's a much better choice for a silenced assault rifle than the M4 which is the choice I see most often.

This is what bothers me about the m14.  I would MUCH rather be able to use the m14 with silencer than the g3, but it's simply not practical for me since I can't use the m14's iron sights and have no problem with the g3.

I'd love to use the M4 but it's so damn weak!  I'm looking forward to the assault rifle at 38 (maybe 37?)...you guys have any thoughts on that one?

I was talking about the m14, not the m4.  I agree that the m4 is weak.  The m14... not so much slywink

The only stat I completely ignore is wins/losses since over half my losses are leaving a game since it drops people when you start so often.  Another 50% of those losses that aren't from drops are out of my control due to lame teammates (not friends).  It's a worthless stat until they fix the dropping issues and reset it.

Crossposted from OO....

I've put a ton of hours into MP over the last week (not seeing any OOers on there, but maybe I have an outdated friends list frown ). I've mainly been playing Headquarters and Free-For-All, but I haven't really found a weapon I'm totally comfortable with. I've mainly been using LMG's, but switch back over to the M14 on occassion. I prefer to have good damage, good accuracy, at medium range and just haven't found the best weapon for that yet.

I'm up level 28 and I have found that my skills have really increased from where I started. I've started ending up in the top 3 on Free-For-All and generally do okay on every map except Countdown. Hopefully once I find a weapon that suits me I can continue getting better.

I'm thinking when I play this week I'll try out some Domination as I haven't really given it a fair shake yet. I'd really, really like to hook up with some OO/GTers though, is there any kind of scheduled game that takes place?

I've found the AK47 to be the best weapon in mid range encounters.  It's my favorite weapon in the game.  Match it up with a red dot, Double tap and deep impact and you've got a very formidable weapon.

somebody help me!  I share a favorite weapon with ATB! slywink  I love the AK47, bandolier, stopping power (or UAV jammer/sleight of hand if hardcore) and steady aim.  Also the AK47, silencer, bandolier, stopping power (or UAV jammer depending on hardcore) and dead silence.

It's much faster levelling when you play with good people and you get high average xp per match.  I do very well with the group I play with and generally get an xp level every 2-3 rounds or so with small gaps where challenges aren't being fulfilled.  It took me about 34 hours of gametime to finish level 55 (you need 5k after you hit 55 to be done) and then I'm going through the second time much faster.  I suspect I'll get the third done in even less time played unless my friends stop playing with me  ninja

The most important thing is to just have fun though, and I manage to do that even when losing when I play with friends.

I've only played a few hours so far, but I'm basically all M16 all the time - red dot sight, extra stun grenades, stopping power, and deep impact.  I'm the guy who likes firing through walls, so I've already picked up all the x-ray vision achievements.  I think I have more fun shooting through things at people than directly at them.  In fact, I'm sure of it.  Reminds me of those heady days of using the HL1 gauss gun...

As far as levelling goes, it seems like Headquarters typically nets the most points per match.  Is there anything more effective at quickly getting one points?  In contrast, the Hardcore modes are somewhat anemic in the points department.

b

I definitely didn't have any problems getting points in Hardcore mode.  Right after I reset my rank for prestige I went from 1-4 in one match then kept the pace of about 400-800 xp per match not counting challenges.  HQ does give good xp, but only if you're winning.

I think we should play regular TDM, let everyone get to level 4 at least, maybe get their 15 kills with theirt weapon of choice to get an RDS, and then maybe play some private hardcore.

I restarted at level 1, I don't have an m14 and a Barrett.

Also I don't really understand the concept of 'bullshit tactics'

High ground is key in any military confrontation. On top of that, the devs have made sure that every high point on every map has multiple angles of attack. Most of them also are big enough that if you don't want to expose yourself to a known sniper location, you can play completely on the other part of the map and never be a viable target.

I do concur that anyone that hasn't unlocked at least the create-a-class perk isn't going to have much fun in a private match. I'll also acknowledge that non-hardcore is probably best for a new player to learn since it teachers the radar and ammo and the like. I'll even agree with Skystride that airstrikes and helis might be a bit unbalanced in our private matches. I do however wish I could enable UAV without enabling the other two bonuses.

Furthermore I really don't understand the whole concept of quitting playing a game because someone's better than you. THAT is a bullshit tactic. The only reason I got so good at the games that I play is because I got my ass kicked repeatedly and decided I wasn't going to let it happen again. When I got R6, I hadn't played on a controller before and was pretty awful at the game. Papa Smurff and JarrodHK kicked the living shit out of me for the first couple months and I had had enough. I spent many long hours figuring out how to get better and what it was going to take and it paid off.

The better the quality of your opponents the better the learning opportunity for yourself. Even if you're getting gunned down repeatedly it's teaching you how to not let that happen.

I suppose some people don't want to put that much effort into getting better and would rather relax and play and that's just fine also. If that's the case, then simply say you'd prefer a more laid back evening and don't want to play the extreme modes. It shows far more tact than screaming 'that's bullshit' dropping the game, then inviting everyone that you can away from the game you were in. That sort of attitude is just plain rude and hurts feelings.

I don't play to be the best, I play to have fun and get better. I often am not at the top of the leaderboard and am occasionally am in complete last place. I still have fun, I don't leave the game and I try to help the team even when I'm frustrated.

sorry to rant, but the constant negativity that has been popping up in the game the last week has finally hit my last nerve. Everyone has their own preferences for game modes and there's more than enough people right now that we can compromise and rotate game modes or have separate parties for each mode. There's no need for the bullshit drama that's been rearing it's head.

BTW, Trom, please note this isn't directed at you at all, it's just your post that made me realize I wanted to air this. I'm surprised you had any issues at all playing with me since you're one of the people that often knocks me off the leader spot on the match list.

I've seen no options other than which weapon you want.  It seems to be exactly like the demo, only easier.  I'm sure the demo level is probably coming up in the game.  Hopefully soon and then the ones after are harder.

The demo pretty much IS what the game is.

Why did you lose all your stats? And btw, I think its funny we have such polar opposite thoughts on weapons. I truly, honestly believe the M14 is one of the worst weapons in the game, and this is from someone who finished all its upgrades except headshot III and have tried about 15 different combos. On PC, with no aim assist, its just a bad weapon. The RPD I do like, but my favorite LMG combo is this: m60, double tap, martyr, grip. Try it. You will like it smile

I can't stand the iron sights on the M60 so I won't be using it with a grip.  I play almost exclusively hardcore mode when not playing with the forumites who dislike hardcore.  The m14 is a one shot kill anywhere you hit the enemy in that mode and with the bandolier I can carry enough ammo to kill 150 enemies slywink
