I don't really see how it's a major plot 'twist' if it happens before you even start playing.  That seems more like just the setup for the story.  Doesn't a twist have to occur after the story starts to be a twist?

Can someone explain to me the Coriolis effect and how it impacts sniping.

It's referenced in that one mission, but I'm not sure I can harmonize the definition with the moment that it is mentioned.  Lil' help?

How it impacts sniping - who the hell knows.  The guy throws out a bunch of nonsense beforehand just to make it seem authentic.  Like anyone is going to know what that effect is or how to compensate for it, much less variable humidity and temperature across the bullet path.  Here's how you get past that section in two tries, max -

Spoiler for Hiden:
Doesn't matter where you hit him, so aim for the chest.  Wait until your partner says "Now or never" and shoot. Observe if the bullet goes left or right.  On the next try, wait until the same point and then aim a little to the left or right based on the previous try.  Worked fine for me on both regular and veteran, and that bullet goes wild on veteran.

I played through it twice and hit him both times on my first shot.  I must be a natural...or the earth's rotation has no effect on me.  I'm the juggernaut, witch!

This leads to a question about the campaign:

I'm on the last mission but:

Spoiler for Hiden:
Isn't the target you're going after in the last mission the same guy you kill in that sniping mission?

Spoiler for Hiden:
you don't kill him in the sniping mission, you shoot his arm off which is why he only has one arm the rest of the game

I dislike the p90 a lot.  I hit a lot with it but it seems to do weak damage per shot.  Even though it fires really fast, I prefer more stopping power per round and shorter bursts.
9010  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Call of Duty 4 Impressions on: November 10, 2007, 06:50:56 AM
I do wish they had a Trueskill system in place along with the ranking system.  A couple times there has been a huge gap in skill between teams.  The combination of a party system and no skill system is bad.

Comparing Halo 3 multiplayer to COD4 multiplayer is just...dumb. There isn't a comparison. You could be the fanciest twitch happy bunny hoping XBR exploting melee bullshit Halo3 player and suck a monkey at COD4. Its slower, its more tactical, its infinitely more lethal. The maps are large, the weapons have tremendous range, and the perks make everyone just that little bit different. Seriously, being good at Halo 3 doesn't mean you will be any good at Gears of War, GRAW2, COD4, or R6:Vegas. It just means you were passable at the Halo3.

Learn how to play this from the ground up rather than trying to apply skills from another game that aren't useful for this one.

I'm not sure I would put GOW in the same class as GRAW, COD and R6.  GOW had cover, but it also had damage more like Halo in terms of how many hits you could take and live.

Does your ability to use such functions show up on your HUD so that if you miss the announcement (because you're too busy running for your life or M-Fing yet another sniper) you at least can see when this is available to you?

yeah, down at the bottom of the screen somewhere, there is a mini-picture of a D-Pad that shows what is active for each direction you push on it.  it's really small though, so it's hard to notice and isn't very intuitive to noobs of the game

Quote
I guess I should have trudged it out until I hit level 4 last night, but it has been such a bad week at work and being humiliated for an hour straight really didn't help matters.  Plus, not having any beer in the fridge just made things all the more frustrating.

Perks sound like they add a completely new and dynamic customization structure to how you play the game, and also augmenting your own personal play style.  What I'm kind of disappointed about is not being able to customize the look of my character.  Not sure why this is even an issue, since it is purely aesthetic, but I like being able to customize my character's look and also outfit him with my own choices of equipment.  And the ability to customize my load-out equipment might become available once I reach level 4 and I don't even know it yet

for the Create a Class, you can pick and customize your entire loadout as well as Perks.  as in, you can specifically choose a different Primary Weapon, Side Arm, and Grenade Type, all individually.  not only that, but you can pick a bunch of different attachments for your Primary weapons and Side Arms.  then of course you can pick 3 different Perks all separately too.  it is complete customization and that's why it's so badass

you can't change your clothes aesthetically though, like in R6 Vegas...which I agree with you, I wish you could do.  the only thing you can 'change' is that you will be in a ghillie suit if you pick a sniper rifle as your Primary weapon

I've noticed that your outfit is based on your primary weapon.  Shotgun users don't have a helmet, they have the ski mask thingie that I conveniently forgot the name of which starts with a 'B' I think slywink

I played a bit of Team Hardcore today with Kato and Fuzz and it was a lot more fun than I expected.  You have no on-screen indicators of any type and almost any damage takes you down and you don't heal.  Was brutal but much fun.  Even a single shot of the silenced sidearm was taking people down.
9014  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: [360] Call of Duty 4, Let's get it on! on: November 09, 2007, 01:05:39 AM
Not at all ATB, there are equal amounts of CQB weapons as there are ranged.  Most maps have alternative routes you can take if you prefer it up close and personal.  Very few map and mode combinations mandate either ranged or CQB in a mutually exclusive manner.

Besides the wonky lobby mechanics where it sometimes drops people, my biggest multiplayer complaint is the lack of any sort of trueskill matching system.

Does that mean that there is more of an opportunity to be placed up against ridiculous l33t players than in games like Gears or R6 with a skill ranking system?

R6 didn't have a skill ranking system.  It also had a time based play-more and you earn rank system similar to this one.
9016  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Call of Duty 4 Impressions on: November 08, 2007, 10:51:27 PM
Another important thing to note is that rank in COD has nothing to do with skill by itself.  It's just a matter of time before anyone gets to 55.  If you compare total time played to rank, you can get a sense of the players skill though since a great player gains more points per hour than a bad player.

Besides the wonky lobby mechanics where it sometimes drops people, my biggest multiplayer complaint is the lack of any sort of trueskill matching system.

Wow my first impressions of CoD4 multiplayer were not good.  All that comes from my suckiness at FPS games in general but in CoD4 it seemed like I'd spawn, look around then die.  Repeat this over and over and I was getting frustrated and pulling the team down (sorry Hark, papasmurf and jztemple  icon_evil ).  I think I played 4 or 5 matches in total and the number of kills I scored was 0 and my total deaths must have been near if not over 75.  This just isn't my kind of MP game I guess as there was no fun to be had for me at all.  At least in Halo I could amuse myself with by grabbing a vehicle or something but in CoD4 all I can do is peek around a corner and die or dash over to a bus and get shot by a sniper on the way etc.  I'm sure this game is top notch in the MP arena but really I don't see myself getting back into it after that disaster earlier today.

I had no problem with your performance while we played Zin.  The game has a much steeper learning curve than Halo and the like and you really just need to find what type of gameplay is your 'thing'.  Some people are great if they are sniping and hidden, some are great on overwatch with a LMG and some are good at flanking with a SMG.  Not many average players can be good at more than one of these areas.  I'd suggest trying to find which type of gameplay you enjoy the most (not really which one you're best at though it could be the same) and then stick to it.  I'll have no problem with you playing on my team as you learn.  This game can be more satisfying than any when doing well (like my 36-2 run last night..  icon_cool thumbsup ) but it can also be the most frustrating game I've played (like my marvelous 2-18 run today where I felt like I couldn't even take a step before I died).

We can also play some private matches once you get past level 4 (just so you have the create-a-class thing) and get you up to speed with just friends.  I'm all for this if you'd like to tonight.

Anyone found a site that explains the "Perks" in a bit more detail?

Ask and ye shall receive:

Perk 1:
Bomb Squad - Detect C4 Easier
C4 x 2 =   +2 C4's
Claymore x 2  =     +2 Claymores
RPG-7 x 2  =     +2 RPG Rounds
Special Grenades x 3  = 3 More Special Grenades
Frag x 3       +3 Frag Grenades
Bandoleer - More Ammo for each clip

Perk 2:
Juggernaut - Extra Health
Sleight of hand - Reload quicker
Stopping power - More damage
UAV Jammer - Jam enemy UAV so you can't bee seen with scans
Sonic Boom - Larger range on explosives
Double Tap  - ??

Perk 3:
Extreme conditioning - Sprint longer distances
Steady Aim - Easier to aim
Last Stand - Shoot pistol while dying (one hit and the target dies)
Deep Impact - Bullets will penetrate thin walls and do more damage
Dead Silence - Less noise during sprint
Iron Lungs - Hold your breath longer while sniping
Eavesdrop - Listen to enemy communication via your headset
Martyrdom - Drop a frag grenage as you die

Bandolier actually gives you more ammo overall, you still have the same number of shots per clip.

Each of the horizontal bars on the reticule are to show where it will hit at various ranges.  You have to experiment to find what ranges are for each.
