Really enjoying the game, but, I would like to see a bit more done with the diplomacy on the SP side of things.  At the moment it seems to be pretty much a case of the Ai telling me to do things and me going 'yes master' if I want any hope of some kind of diplomatic relations.  It would be nice if there were some inherent dislikes/problems between differing races, and conversely it being easier to make friend's with factions from the same race.  Of course that might already be in there and I haven't noticed it yet.

I also would like to see some more obvious distinctions between the 3 races.  The ships look different, and do have different abilities, but it just doesn't quite feel like they play very differently.  This may be mainly a factor of not having played enough to see more of the subtleties that are there.

Lastly, more ships types.  I know that it helps to keep things fairly streamlined, but it would be nice to have some other, viable, ships to play with.

Considering that from the sound of things Ironclad intends to have the same type of after release support that Galciv I&2 have had, I expect to start seeing such things before too long.

P.s. forgot minor races, monsters (what?  I liked the random space monsters from MOO), ancient robotic defenses...

I agree with most of what you've said, but I definitely feel the three races play extremely differently in playstyles.  Advent's use of shields, aggro management in battle, spreading damage through use of guardians and their focus on strikecraft and culture make them play much differently than the other two definitely.  TEC had the huge economic focus which allows you to fund huge fleets more quickly and their ships do good damage as well.  Vasari have amazing control with regards to phase lanes and jumping and their ships focus on hindering movement of others, self repair and the like and they play quite different as a result.

You CAN play each of the three races in the same way, in which case they would seem very similar, but if you cater to their strengths you'll probably see that they really are quite different.

No deffense against the big guns cept to take them out before they fire?

That seems pretty accurate.  What Kato did was evil.  We played a 1v1 right before Jarrod joined us for the 3v3.  In that 1v1 I just basically set up some border worlds that were heavily fortified to slow him down while I raced to the end of the weapon line and got the big cannons.  The border worlds keep him from getting to my guns before they can tag him from my backlines.  Sadly we quit the game before I completed my first gun, then he uses the strat in the very next game.  ninja  Good news was he confirmed that it was a sound idea slywink  Bad news is that it's a sound idea with very few ways to prevent other than an early rush which I despise.

I'm liking the game, I can see getting into it more as I progress. Trying to save up for a hermes packet boat after losing my spiffy bermuda sloop. Couple more levels and I should be there. And whoever said it was right, you level up by killing pirates in the open see then come back into town and just burn through the missions to get all the money. Seems to have worked well.

I finally got to play the demo, and what concerns me is the unlimited combos.  It seems like the only way you can get the higher scores is to combo pretty much the whole level.  I much prefer the system in Guitar Hero, where the combo is capped at 4.  That way, there's a definite advantage to getting combos, but it's not completely devastating to your score if you lose your combo string.

This is why I stopped playing the Tony Hawk series and the ability to go infinite on drifts and boosts in Burnout Paradise is a bit irritating too.

Keep in mind it's including all platforms, if Halo 3 was released on the PS3 as well you could imagine how much better it would have sold.

maybe, and I stress that, a little bit better.  The Playstation crowd has done without Halo forever, and CoD was already established with them.

Also, look which is the number 1 game being played on XBL?  Halo 2 held that spot for 2 years after it's release.  CoD4 > Halo 3- hopefully whoever does Halo 4 will realize they need to mix things up a bit.

Yeah but that was for what, one month? Halo 3 came out two months earlier, there's no saying that we won't see Halo 3 back on top in January, and the rest of the months thereafter.

I would be very surprised to see Halo 3 back on top soon.

its like tony hawk meets third person shooter

This is a perfect description of the game.

Agreed, except I do like the fact that they give some back story as to WHY the guys are fighting.  For instance, Finn, the gambler, is fighting to pay off his debts or the guys he's lost to are gonna kill him.  I dunno, it kinda makes me want to win with him to help him out.  I like the fleshing out of the characters that way.  I am gonna watch this one closely and see how it pans out as I thought the gunplay was enjoyable, but man oh man, I sure wanted the ability to going into cover.  Or did I miss something and it was there?  But then again, I think this is meant to be a run and gun and not hunker down and fight type of game.

I am keeping my eye on this one for sure.

They seem to be shooting for really fast paced and I think a cover mechanic would encourage you to slow things down.

I'm not opposed to rolling as a different faction on another server.  I do think most people seem to misunderstand what pirates can and can't do however.  Pirates can do almost everything the other nations can do except permanently capture or lose ports.  They can still contend for them, still fight the huge battles of 25v25 for the ports.  I'm interested in trying out some of the other careers at some point and obviously can't do that as a pirate, but once again most of what they can do is just a different flavor and not a completly new world.  Pirate traders can do a lot of the things Freetraders can except the ability to check markets without being there.   Pirate production is only limited by not being able to make mastercraft (the final tier) of ships.

A large part of why I decided to go pirate was because of the flexibility combined with the easier access to pvp.  Pvp is also much more forgiving to pirates in general since most of our ships aren't build and paid for.

32", which is MORE than large enough for our den. It's a rectangular room and we don't sit lengthwise, so it works great.

Played a bit more last night.  I have so many thoughts running around in my head regarding this game, both positive and negative.

It is fun being in a group with players that I know, which is on the Morgan Server as a member of Hark's pirate gang.  But in discovering the Economy tutorial last night, I believe this is where I am going to find my longterm enjoyment.  I am definately making a Freetrader on another server tonight to mess around with this class.

You can do most of the economic stuff with a pirate, you just can't build the top tier of any of the branches. Freetrader skills are based around getting added discounts or bonuses to economic things and being able to build the top of each tree.  I'm huge into the economy and that's my main focus in the game but I think I prefer the pirate skillset and combat skills as well, in particular the good stealth combined with kite skills to allow me to run my goods undisturbed so I can not fear for my goods.

Most boarding combat for me is over in about 5 seconds, I hit Push, then fire my gun at the captain, hit the 'Attack my target' then hit the attack to lower their balance and finally an attack or two for damage.  Sometimes I don't make it to the balance attack before the captain is dead.

Major Nelson's blog has this week's Live activity list and CoD 4 has topped Halo 3. I think thats the first time its happened.

Didn't I predict this was going to happen in early 08? I am 99% sure I did. I think COD4 has a good chance of staying up there. The game is a certified blockbuster, and frankly, the MP is just better.

And I hope they realize it and don't implement the Halo ranking system. It's fun for a while, but when you cap out it becomes nothing but frustrating.

What ranking system are you talking about, are you talking about the TrueSkill rank that stops at 50?  If so then you're making the same mistake many people did and that's trying to 'cap it out'.  It's a number to show how good you are at the game, and it's all relative, not absolute.  Given a perfect world where every one always played at their best you'd have players ranked between 1-50 and the 50 would always win over a 49.  I think the system itself is great, but people can't stand the thought that they may never get to 50 and started bitching, while people that got to 50 in a couple weeks bitched that they were done.  They weren't done, they need to keep playing so the game gets a high enough statistical average to determine their real rank.  The confusion is the only reason I'm glad it's not in COD4.  I wish it was in to avoid some of the mismatches though, since COD4 rank is only a value of how much you play and even the worst player even can eventually be 55 prestige 10.

Buncha fucking pussies that play ranked matches.  Out of the 7 ranked matches I played tonight, 5 of them quit mid-way through the song when they weren't winning.  I lost the other two, so my official tally for the night is 0-2.  If you're gonna play, man-up and take the losses as well as the wins.  Quit being such babies.   finger   I also really wish there was a way to keep the bonus songs out of the rotation.  There's a reason they're not main songs, and it's because the majority of them completely suck.

On a related note, I'm stuck on where to play.  I routinely get worked at Expert level (I maybe win 2 out of 10), but I win pretty consistently on Hard.  I'm decent enough that after a win on Hard yesterday, I had someone accuse me of playing down just to get wins.  I don't want to be 'that guy', but I also don't want to get my ass kicked all the time.  What do you guys think?  (as far as the solo tiers go, I've beaten everything but the last 2 songs on Hard, and hit a wall on one of middle Expert tiers (the one with Train Kept A-rollin and Detroit Rock City))

I haven't played any of the competitive match types in a while, but I thought you get credited with a win if someone drops out on you toward the end of a song.  I'm also pretty sure that the one time I had drop a match (due to something in RL), I got a loss for it

as for which difficulty to play, I say Hard...that's what I played on, even though I beat the Solo Career mode for Expert guitar.  some Expert songs I just miss way too many notes on, and it's not quite as 'fun' to play

You do get a win if they leave, I got my 5 in a row achievement with 2 drops finishing up my streak.

Not that I actually support censorship like this (which doesn't prevent me from joking about it), but isn't discouraging the cross posting, rather than "forcing" a diversity, instead acknowledging the diversity, and rejecting what OO represents?

Actually, the only thing I dislike is having to read "this has been cross posted at OO".  Does anyone bother mentioning when they cross post here and at Bovine Conspiracy, or QT3, or Penny-Arcade, or whatever?  I've just never seen the reason for it, since the sites are not affiliated.

I was on guitar/bass, and Fyedaddy was on the other.  I could hear my guitar and the drums fine, but couldn't hear his track at all.   Thought it was maybe a problem with my headset, but it happened again tonight in two different groups when I was using the mic to do the vocal track.  Strange...

It seems to emphasize the track you are playing and this sometimes drowns out the other players tracks when playing remotely.  I've noticed it's especially bad if you're doing much better than the other person.  Similar to how GH 2 would lean the volume towards the winner.
