I downloaded the beta last night, but I was pretty tired and decided to sleep instead of giving it a shot.  Maybe I'll give it a try tonight if I can resist Vegas 2.

It doesn't start until the 25th so you will be playing R6 with us instead slywink

If you aren't having fun playing a game.  Don't play it.  Seriously, why spend time on something that you don't enjoy?

Plus, a lot of games have a hump you need to get past.  I was just not having fun with the beginning of Zelda Twilight Princess and shelved it for months.  When I finally restarted the game it turned out I had been only 30 minutes away from getting to the kind of gameplay I love in Zelda games.

This makes me wonder though if games are shooting themselves in the foot by making you wait and/or shifting gameplay during your experience.  Should you really have to go through 30+ minutes of non-fun experience to get to something you enjoy?  Every now and then (especially in mmorpg's) I have to just sit back and remind myself that games are supposed to be fun.  If the process of playing isn't fun, I shouldn't play it regardless of if the end result will be fun.  Grinding towards a goal for example should itself be fun.  So far CoX is the only game for me where the process of levelling up remains fun for me.  I'm looking forward to games that let you level up solely through pvp so that I can have fun throughout.

It's not like the old PC games where you plan it all out ahead of time, but the campaign mode does have you telling AI guys where to stack up and how to breach then issuing the go command.

While I agree that mp is very clunky, clearing rooms after every ranked battle makes sense to me.  If it's for rank, you don't want to have people playing the same opponents repeatedly because that skews the TrueSkill ratings.  Obviously if you're kicking ass you want to keep kicking the same people's asses if it's ranked.  However, your rating and theirs may have changed due to said ass-kicking so you shouldn't be playing against them again.

Fair enough, but it's not an issue with CoD4. How about instituting an auto search, that automatically finds you another game, once you finish the one you just played? Saves time, streamlines the experience a bit, and certainly would make the gamers happy. I know last night I heard a lot of bitching about it bouncing you back to the main menu.

You're right that it shuold auto search to keep you playing until you decide not to.  To be fair to R6 though, the reason it wasn't a problem in COD4 is because it doesn't use any ranking system or TrueSkill to match up people by their skill level.  There really is no ranked match on COD4, just public vs private options.  R6 has public, private and ranked.  I generally just play on public servers when not in a private party, I couldn't care less about my rank since you get xp in all modes it's not like COD where you have to play a certain mode to advance.

It is my understanding from some people at the Charlie Oscar Delta forums, that it in fact DOES use a background ranking and statistical system to determine matches.

I highly doubt it does and have plenty of hours of proof in playing.  I routinely was grouped with people who either had just started or couldn't play well at all.  We had several matches where it put everyone that was decent against everyone who was horrible.   If it used any ranking or stats to match people those wouldn't happen.  People were theorizing that it used a ranking system in the background when the game came out but nobody ever had proof it did.

Yep, $10 is standard cost for these things.  Since I'm currently playing R6 though, I'll wait until the price drops to 400pts or free like they always do.  If I was still playing CoD4 as my main game I'd pay the $10 in a heartbeat.

So what though? All the movies you listed were hilarious...

He's saying more movies should be like the ones listed because they were hilarious and had the main characters acting like pricks even at the end.

I'm really glad they are designing CO with loot

that was CoX's fatal flaw...without loot, a MMO just does not have that constant long-term draw to play.  it was a brilliant game in short chunks of time, but lack of loot just ruined it eventually

CoX has loot now and it makes a huge difference to the draw to play the game.

The AI seem pretty capable to me, you do have to micro-manage their actual movement, but with liberal use of hold and follow me it's not a problem.

T-hunt looks to still be 4 player coop.

I'm not real big on playing vs cpu though, so will probably only be doing it when nobody else is available.
8859  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Rainbow Six Vegas 2 on: March 18, 2008, 07:04:46 PM
I forgot one problem I had though, I had my AI rappelling down a rope, and he stops halfway down.  I give the command to descend the rest of the way and get 'I can't do that' okay, so ascend back up and we'll try another way... 'I can't do that'.  Up, down, he won't go either way and sits there on the side of the wall until they kill him and end the mission the bad way.
8860  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Rainbow Six Vegas 2 on: March 18, 2008, 06:58:11 PM
So far I like everything more than Vegas 1.  I did have some slowdown when a grenade blew out 2 rooms full of glass windows though.

Graphics seem improved to me.  I know I had fired up V1 last week and was amazed how crappy it looked after playing COD4.  I didn't get that feeling at all this time.  I'm liking the xp system as well.

Game is hard, it's definitely a different beast than COD is though.  Gameplay feels a lot like V1 obviously and it's a game that you either love or hate.  Bullet penetration is modelled in a lot more detail this time though and it shows.

Overall if you enjoyed the first one at all you'd be wrong to not pick it up.  I don't generally get into the story mode of these games but it is fun with the added control you have of your AI partners.  T-hunt is as fun as before, though they still spawn as you go which I despise.  Have only done one mp match, trying to wait until some of you are in so I don't have the comfortability advantage.  I really like the new Team Leader mode though, it's like the VIP mode they added only both sides have leaders and spawning is based on whether they are alive or not.  Was very fun and dynamic.

Overall, I think COD is probably superior for what most people are looking for in a shooter.  R6V:2 does tactical far better though, and to anyone who wants to feel like they are in a real firefight it can't be beat.  You stick your head out, it's over.  I can't really say it's any harder than COD though, because the ease of death goes both ways, it's easier to drop a tango in both sp and mp.

I've been having fun in CoV, as much as my goody-two-shoes mind set will let me. I didn't get the pack with CoH included but I think I'll pick it up tomorrow if I see it.

I have a lv22 brute, DB\Inul and I do like the set. But for some reason, and I've had this in all games I play, I can't get into the "evil" persona as much as I can the "good hero" type.

After 3 years in WoW I never played a Horde character more than a few levels for the same silly reason. I've tried and tried I just don't enjoy the evil side of things in games.

Sooooo.........I will start over, not a big deal I'm on lv 22, with a goody-two-shoes in CoH.

I also don't like the overly brooding atmosphere of CoV. Too apocalyptic for my tastes.

Is there a good solo class in CoH? Better than most I mean. I play very, very early in the morning and have always had to take groups as I can find them in MMO"s.
I still enjoy the genre tremendously though.
So playing a very good solo class is always a pre-requisite of mine in a MMO..

Any suggestions?

Don't buy the game again if you have it, as mentioned previously if you have either cov or coh, you have both.  They are not separate games anymore.

Level Up Boost: Upon reaching enough XP to level up (at all levels), one of each type of large inspiration is immediately cast upon your character, and health and endurance bars are immediately filled.

About time. CoX was pretty much the only MMO that didn't give you full health whenever you leveled. And now you'll get one heck of a boost for a minute every time you do so.

This looks and sounds quite cool. Also, keep in mind, assuming they do the 10-20 missions right, you can always Flashback them. Gives the people at 50 the chance to see the new content.

Also, it's nice to see that they're redoing the Hollows. There's a reason why people avoid the zone like the plague when it becomes 'available'. It's WAY too big for when you don't have any standard travel power (short of the ones granted upon going the Bank missions earlier).

And Psychic Blasters? I just might play a Blaster again with that kind of power in my proverbial hands.

I actually don't like it when games heal you at level up because then it can sometimes make difficult battles trivial if you level up during them.  I remember many people in other games that would intentionally get everyone near level so they could defeat something they shouldn't be able to due to the free mp and hp they'd get when they ding halfway through.

I don't think it means anything really deep - probably just a programming error in one of the new DLCs that needed to be fixed; or possibly a DLC needed to be moved up in order to complete this week.

I finally pulled off my first 100% on expert on Saturday. After about 10 tries at El Scorcho (not straight), always screwing up something stupid, I pulled it off on Roxanne. Got about 2 minutes in and got this fun excited feeling that I might finally pull it off - felt great to finally get it, since now there's no pressure to get 100% on another song it'll be easier to pull them off.

Nothing personal against Pete (or Fuzz who also has this same opinion) but it really irritates me when people that use tactics are accused of exploiting.  Camping (especially in a tactical shooter like R6) isn't cheap, or exploiting, or even unsportsmanlike, it's a very valid tactic.   Spawn camping on the other hand, is a bit iffy, but R6 had more than enough ways to counter that as well and in fact is the first game where I felt spawn camping wasn't completely unfair.
