Will probably pick up the others eventually since I like the game and will support it.  Same reason I buy the cars and tracks for Forza and the songs for Rock Band.

On the other hand, not having certain tracks for Rock Band doesn't put you at a disadvantage to other players.  I don't like FPS' on the consoles anyways but even if I did I wouldn't be buying this game out of principle. But I guess because of my preferences it's a moot point.

I don't think not having these guns is going to put anyone at a disadvantage.  They really did make parity between weapons.  For example all assault rifles have the same magazine size.  Differences between weapons is mostly cosmetic with the exception of shotguns (there are pump and semi) and sniper rifles (bolt action and semi) and in both of those cases there are semi versions that are unlockable with levelling up so you're still not at a disadvantage by not buying the weapons.  It's not like there are any weapons that are more effective that you can only buy, or that you can't drive a tank without buying the license. (boy would that suck)

BTW, not having a song does in fact put you at a disadvantage in multiplayer because you don't get to play that song... ever slywink  And there are cars in Forza that are strictly better than cars that came with the game and you have to buy them.  You are in fact at a disadvantage in a ranked race vs someone who paid to have the better car but nobody bitched when they released those.

Also, was it just me or was it hard to make out what the hell the other characters were saying? Seems more often than not the dialogue was drowned out by the overbearing dramatic music.

this is definitely true, and extremely annoying to those of us who like hearing or reading all the dialog.  this could have very easily been remedied by having subtitles, but there isn't even that option

I have one suggestion when you get the game: Set the Music and Sound FX to around 4 and have Voices set to 10. If you have Surround Sound thatís a big bonus. Dialog plays a major role in the story and really draws you in; you donít want to miss it.

That was the first thing I did and I still had a problem hearing voices.  I'm amazed any of you could hear them at all.  I hate in-game music so I always turn it down or off when I first play a game.

So far I like it fine. I am not in love with it, but i think it brings some cool innovation in the series. The weapons are cool, the specials are cool, the destructible environment stuff is fantastic and a lot of fun. Weapon aim is a it floaty, there is a ton of latency all the time, and there is woefully insufficient feedback for when you are hitting an enemy and when you in turn are being hit. Lots of little problems like that-the game needs a lot of polish IMO, and I am admittedly not in much of a gaming mood lately, but I still have fun with it and will probably play it a little more.

That's interesting that you say that.  Floaty aim and lack of feedback when hitting and being hit is my biggest pet peeve in any shooter.  It's the reason I couldn't enjoy Frontlines and Army of Two.  Having said that though, I found none of that in B:BC.  I always knew where I was getting tagged from, felt like I was taking people down effectively and had no floatiness whatsoever in the aiming.  Haven't had a laggy battle yet either after 7 hours of playing total.

After looking at how the various weapons work, I'm fine with the micro-transaction model.  There are weapons of close enough comparison available for unlocks that other than a completionist you don't really NEED the locked gear.  There are achievements in game (medals and the like) that require some of the locked weapons though I think they only require the ones you can unlock in-game and not the pay-to-unlock ones.

Because the gear that is pay-to-unlock is the pre-order stuff that would otherwise not be available to non-pre-orders at all I'm glad they at least offer the option to get them.

I have no problem with pay to play game models as long as they aren't a huge and continuous wallet drain.  If there was something like medkits or extra ammo available for real money I'd have a problem and not play out of principle.  As it is, by pre-ordering the Gold edition I'll get 6 of the 10 locked weapons anyway.  Will probably pick up the others eventually since I like the game and will support it.  Same reason I buy the cars and tracks for Forza and the songs for Rock Band.

On one hand I think if games are going to have a subscription model or continuous additions via micro-transactions then they should cost less than the $60, but then I realize that PC games were $50-$60 when I was in high school and the cost of gaming as a whole hasn't increased with inflation so I just deal with it.
8846  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: First 15 minutes of Dark Sector on PS3 on: March 27, 2008, 10:32:43 AM
I played a couple more hours last night and twice I had to stop and force myself to continue.  There's a scene in the sewars that's completely dark (even with brightness up a couple notches) where you get no less than 8 wave of badguys in cramped quarters coming at you.  You can't really see them and when they get close and you are near a wall the camera zooms in so all you see is the back of your dude and the back of his head.  Then when you take damage you get a bit of red mixed in with the blackness that makes it even harder to see.

The ability to buy weapons and customize them is pretty cool, but mostly irrelevant if controlling the weapons is such a pain.

I will say that guiding the glaive around in bullet time is a blast, if that's all you had to do in the game I'd play Duck Hunt - Glaive Edition.

I'm more than willing to sell the game to any of you who are seriously wanting to try it or think it'd be a good game for you.  As long as you know what you're getting into.  I'd just hate to take the $35 sting for a couple days of miserable gaming experiences if I trade it in for $25 frown There has to be someone who would actually enjoy this piece of crap slywink

It was after playing R6:V2 for a week then going to COD4 for a few hours that made me realize that as fun as COD4 is, the player movement speed is completely crazy over-the-top.
8848  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: First 15 minutes of Dark Sector on PS3 on: March 26, 2008, 08:07:41 PM
I'm not saying the story or graphics are bad, though the reviews seem to think they might be.

I can say that throughout the opening I just thought 'so what' while I normally pay attention closely to dialogue and cutscenes.  Production values seem pretty low on the scripting.

In the first 30 minutes I fought two boss battles which is another pet peeve of mine in shooters.  I despise boss battles and enemies that are invincible other than a puzzle solution.

While it's true that the controls may grow on me over time, my point was that a good game shouldn't require more than a few moments for me to get my bearings.  I'm a very fast learner on control schemes.

Soul, the framerate and animation is fine, the controls are clunky, the animation isn't so bad.  Reloading when the glaive is out seems a bit bad I guess.  I feel like I'm driving a tank around instead of a dude. lol

Wow, that's pretty bad.

Just wondering but did you player Resident Evil 4 or Gears?  How do the controls stack up to those games?

I didn't play RE4 but I did play through Gears.  Gears controls were similar but I didn't have any aiming issues with Gears. Aiming was pretty smooth and natural.  In this game I found myself diving past cover into open areas, aiming for someone's head and the cursor would drift after I stopped moving it and stuff like that.  Gears didn't have those issues.
8850  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Rainbow Six Vegas 2 on: March 26, 2008, 05:21:23 PM
Another thought, I've noticed that the game loads into maps much faster, but isn't actually loading everything before it puts you in.  The tradeoff is that it's still loading textures and objects while you start playing.  In coop and vs this means there will be serious lag, both network and system load lag, while it loads the rest.  Sucks and obviously isn't optimal.

While I can't say the game overall is bad, and it's a definite improvement over the first, the bar for multiplayer quality has definitely been raised by COD4 and this game just comes in under the bar for me.  I have a lot of fun WHEN I'm in a good sized team game and playing, but they made it so hard to get to that point.

Battlefield: Bad Company and COD4 right now are the top of my chart on multiplayer playability.  Hopefully they don't botch the implementation of parties and grouping in the full version of B:BC

FWIW I've only played the campaign in non-splitscreen co-op mode but I haven't witnessed any slow down either.

This makes no sense (of course I believe you, I'm not referring to your experience). We have a wide variety of boxes here-manufacture date, HDMI, Pro, Elite, Arcade, etc. And it appears that its maybe 50/50 experiencing slowdown vs. not. How does this make any sense?

Makes sense to me just because of the shoddy quality control.  The 360's out there have vastly different levels of heat and load tolerance.  Many systems are probably in various stages of over heating and RROD.  Different ambient temps may be a factor.  Either way, I'm not that surprised.  Long gone are the days where every console of the same type is indeed the same.

So far after about 30 minutes playing all I can say is neat concept but the controls are pretty horrid and unresponsive.  Most important part of any game for me is the controls.  I can overlook bad story, bad graphics, and occasionally bad design in general, but when I'm fighting controls I just won't play.

Jesus I don't know what a Gillette Fusion costs but if it's anything like a Mach 3 then that must cost a fortune!!!  I use Mach 3 and I replace my razor every....3 weeks, or maybe more.  I don't shave every day but usually I do.

Wow, I can't imagine replacing a blade that often.  I have gone up to a month of near daily shaving on one blade before since the damn things cost a fortune.  Even if I won the lottery I wouldn't replace a blade every 3 shaves.

Same here, no problems with clogging either.  If you have problems you could try putting it in a small bit of water and swishing it back and forth.  I had to do this at a previous home where water pressure was an issue.  Just the amount of water on the shower floor would be enough if it clogged.

So, after playing the game a bit, I've come to the following conclusions:

1) The AI is dumb. Your partners will stand around and get shot at (and yes, they're on Assault mode) and return fire on their own terms. Yes, this means that you'll be doing most of the killing, even though your friends have belts of unlimited reloads.
2) The 'spawning' opponents STILL exists. Why the fuck, in this day and age, with this technology, are we still faced with enemies THAT DON'T EXIST until you walk over an invisible marker on the ground!?!
3) I've thrown grenades against vehicles that blow up, then move 10 feet and throw a grenade at a different vehicle, yet that one doesn't explode. WTF?

Thankfully, through all of this, the game is still fun. You just have to expect certain retarded decisions by the dev team in order to fully enjoy it.

I've had no problems with the ai not shooting enemies, it's movement issues I occasionally have to deal with.  I've done a couple missions with my partners doing 100% of the killing to see if I could.

If you aren't having fun playing a game.  Don't play it.  Seriously, why spend time on something that you don't enjoy?

Plus, a lot of games have a hump you need to get past.  I was just not having fun with the beginning of Zelda Twilight Princess and shelved it for months.  When I finally restarted the game it turned out I had been only 30 minutes away from getting to the kind of gameplay I love in Zelda games.

This makes me wonder though if games are shooting themselves in the foot by making you wait and/or shifting gameplay during your experience.  Should you really have to go through 30+ minutes of non-fun experience to get to something you enjoy?  Every now and then (especially in mmorpg's) I have to just sit back and remind myself that games are supposed to be fun.  If the process of playing isn't fun, I shouldn't play it regardless of if the end result will be fun.  Grinding towards a goal for example should itself be fun.  So far CoX is the only game for me where the process of levelling up remains fun for me.  I'm looking forward to games that let you level up solely through pvp so that I can have fun throughout.

While I agree that mp is very clunky, clearing rooms after every ranked battle makes sense to me.  If it's for rank, you don't want to have people playing the same opponents repeatedly because that skews the TrueSkill ratings.  Obviously if you're kicking ass you want to keep kicking the same people's asses if it's ranked.  However, your rating and theirs may have changed due to said ass-kicking so you shouldn't be playing against them again.

Fair enough, but it's not an issue with CoD4. How about instituting an auto search, that automatically finds you another game, once you finish the one you just played? Saves time, streamlines the experience a bit, and certainly would make the gamers happy. I know last night I heard a lot of bitching about it bouncing you back to the main menu.

You're right that it shuold auto search to keep you playing until you decide not to.  To be fair to R6 though, the reason it wasn't a problem in COD4 is because it doesn't use any ranking system or TrueSkill to match up people by their skill level.  There really is no ranked match on COD4, just public vs private options.  R6 has public, private and ranked.  I generally just play on public servers when not in a private party, I couldn't care less about my rank since you get xp in all modes it's not like COD where you have to play a certain mode to advance.

It is my understanding from some people at the Charlie Oscar Delta forums, that it in fact DOES use a background ranking and statistical system to determine matches.

I highly doubt it does and have plenty of hours of proof in playing.  I routinely was grouped with people who either had just started or couldn't play well at all.  We had several matches where it put everyone that was decent against everyone who was horrible.   If it used any ranking or stats to match people those wouldn't happen.  People were theorizing that it used a ranking system in the background when the game came out but nobody ever had proof it did.
