A bit of a bummer - they finally revealed what you need to do to get free weapon #4 - you have to have played a previous Battlefield game, which I have not.

Wha?  How are they checking that?  I've played plenty of 1942, V, and 2, but how in the world would I prove it to Bad Company?

It looks at your EA tag, what sucks for me is all of my '42, V and 2 was on a different tag because when I got my 360 it wouldn't link so I made another one.

1. There is an achievement for using a parachute - I thought there were not parachutes in the game?

They're not in the multiplayer, but as a guess perhaps there's a part in the SP storyline involving a parachute.

The achievement says "(Online) Glide in the parachute for 3 seconds".

A bit of a bummer - they finally revealed what you need to do to get free weapon #4 - you have to have played a previous Battlefield game, which I have not. It is an assault rifle, which is not too big of a deal, as I expect to spend most of my time as Support and Demolitions. The developers have also hinted that they will likely free up all the find-all-five weapons somewhere down the line.

I believe it's called Darwin's Parachute because there is no parachute.  They want you to freefall to your death from high enough for 3 seconds of hang time.

Oh, and there is no street date for this title so nobody broke anything (combined with the fact that the release date is the 23rd anyway)

Complete Noob question here.  Ok, I just tried out the 360 SP demo.  Not bad, but when I clicked on multiplayer, it says I have to register for EA account.  When I played COD4 on Live, no such thing was necessary.  So, what's all this then (the EA account thingy)?

I have no recollection of that at all when I tried it.  I don't think you need an EA account to play the demo, but it's probably so that you can track your stats maybe? I dunno.

You need an EA account to play any EA game on live, if you've ever played any of them, at some point you filled out the account and it remembers you.  Basically it involves you saying it's ok for EA to have access to all the info about you that MS has. frown

I'm a bit late to the party, but I'd like to pipe in on the solo'ing group stuff bit.  Kato had no problem solo'ing several of the epic instances one he was just a few levels past them with his Guardian.  Not sure how much that has changed since the lowering of damage on Overreach though.

I prefer to solo in most games, but I love to play with other people in the world.  I don't like the forced group mechanics of healer/tank/dps used in most mmorpgs.  It encourages cliques and snobbery imo.  Just like some people can't understand why I would enjoy playing 'by myself' in a game full of other people, I can't understand why people can't have fun unless they are beating stuff up with other people.  They are both social extremes.  While I enjoy grouping on occasions, when you group you tend to spend a fair amount of your time waiting on people to get together, organizing where you're going, recovering from a wipe, waiting again on someone to get back from doing a chore for their wife/kid, etc.  I don't pay a monthly fee to wait on other people and that's what it tends to boil down to.  Raids just take it to a whole different extreme and that's something I'll never be into.

C4 is awesome, that's why it's awesome.  It's so awesome that it defines the word awesome.  If you unlock it and don't think it's awesome, you don't understand what awesome is all about.

Though sometimes with lag, I'll throw my c4 on a vehicle and it'll 'stick' but when I detonate it, the c4 wasn't actually on the vehicle, it was on the ground under me.

Just got back. I liked it quite a lot, but not quite as much as Iron Man. To make a comparison, these two movies are like Baldur's Gate 2 and Icewind Dale. BG2/Iron Man has more story, more memorable characters, and in general the more complete package. IWD/Hulk takes the action parts from BG2, improves even more on the action parts, but drops a lot of the story and characterization to do so. Still, you can tell both came from the same developer/studio, since they both are quite polished and really, are good standards to judge other superhero movies against this summer.

Quote from: Caine on June 15, 2008, 06:11:41 AM

stark in the suit was much more believable and there's very little effective characterization going on when the hulk is on screen.  they make an attempt, but it comes off as king kong-ish instead of a real scene.

My friend mentioned this exact thing, that the Hulk seemed more like King Kong at times than anything, and it came off as odd.

I can see that comparison, but it's not all together unlike how the Hulk is/was.  Before he starts to get control over who he is when he's the hulk and the hulk's personality evolves, he kinda is like a King Kong on the inside imo.

Overall I really liked the movie, no huge problems with it in any case.  Enjoyed my time at the theater and look forward to seeing more.  I enjoyed the time while he was Banner just as much as when he was Hulk which surprised me (especially after someone else had mentioned the comparison to Stark/Ironman and how Banner/Hulk wasn't the same).  For me I could watch either movie minus the hero parts and still enjoy it, but I like character driven pieces.

I had a concern that the way they introduced stuff quickly in the beginning over the credits would confuse the average movie goer who is oblivious and doesn't really pay attention to details. Hopefully this isn't the case.

I liked how they didn't kill anyone off but still had a resolution.  That's how comic movies should be imo.

Saw it, loved it.

Great performances all around for me, enough camp to keep it fun without dragging it into the realm of Austin Powers.  Good action, good character development.  Overall I had a really good experience.

Hard for me to say whether the chief or Max was my favorite part though, Alan Arkin was awesome.

EQ2's patcher is...less than efficient. Sometimes it'll just completely stop, forcing you to restart it, while other times you'll want to restart it anyway as the download speed has gone in the crapper.

To put it bluntly - its been a constant complaint from the players for years now.

This problem went away when I turned off the user access control in Vista.  I occasionally still have it with the beta patcher, but I stopped using it because of this.  Haven't had any issues with the original launcher since.

So far the unlocks I've been pleased with (not in order):

M16 - good damage and accuracy
MG36 - good accuracy and has a scope when zoomed
AT Mines - good damage and ease of use
C4 - awesome in every way slywink
Mortar - very good addition to the class, almost makes up for lack of anti-vehicle utility by providing better anti-infantry
Laser Designator - good all around once you get used to it
SVU - fast firing, low noise, good damage in the tradeoff
C4 - did I mention this is awesome?

Unlocks I have not been pleased with:

M95 - simply doesn't do enough over the original to justify an unlock
XM8 LMG - might be ok if it fits your playstyle, but it takes a few more rounds than the other guns to kill with and doesn't seem to have the accuracy to make sure those rounds are on target.

The only problem I still have with the patcher process is that EQ2 still requires a pretty long file scan before it lets you play.  You would think they would have implemented some kind of simple file database or list that could be checked instead.

Heh, not to excuse EQ2, but have you played AoC?  icon_razz

The scan for EQ2 doesn't take me long at all, maybe 10-15 seconds.  AoC definitely is a problem and the scan can take over a minute and on a few occasions as many as 3-4 minutes.

Send it in. If it's a launch unit it will probably be out of warranty for the red rings soon and since it's showing signs of dying I'd go ahead and exchange it now.

I loved how it had a semi-serious overall story that was in the middle of an outlandish comedic venue.  What really made it shine as a movie though was the direction and art style.  I thought it was of high enough quality that I would consider it to be a masterpiece smile

It had a good enough story and likeable enough characters to keep me interested, the fights were well choreographed, the effects done well and the dialogue was humorous without being dry or overly long.  I think it was a hit on all the criteria I judge movies on.

I downloaded the demo the other day and tried it out yesterday. The game seemed extremely laggy; has anyone else noticed that issue?

Ranked games tend to be more laggy than non ranked games.
Think Hark said it some time ago where it might be the case that the ranked servers are CONSTANTLY updating stats every time you even pull a trigger.

With that said, if we have a large group playing we tend to start a non ranked game.

This is part of the problem.  Basically the EA servers are having to handshake with the MS servers constantly during the matches because of the reluctance of MS to allow completely hands-off (on their part) third party servers.  Eventually they'll get it sorted out, but it might take awhile since part of the delay will be politics and not just technical hurdles.  While it's an irritation, I understand MS's reluctance since XBOX-Live is their brand and if they allow EA complete freedom they basically lose control over something that in the end is still perceived as theirs.

The gist of it is that MS won't run servers for the game since it really only does peer-to-peer, but they don't allow EA's servers complete access since they aren't MS servers.  It's causing quite a headache and I'm not sure why it hasn't been cleared up before now since I don't think this is the first game with this issue (frontlines, though I remember it being laggy too, was that fixed?).

Loving the game, but having issues with idiots more and more both on my team and the other team.  Also my big complaint right now is the game does not feel as consistant as it did in beta, but that might be lag behind the scenes.  Sometimes I fire my gun and someone drops from full to zero health really fast, and sometimes they take a whole clip then turn and kill me in <1 second.  Same gun, same enemy, same health and I can get two different outcomes.  I either seem to kill people quicker than it feels I should, or it takes forever.  Never seems to be the middle.  It works both ways too.  I felt bad for this guy that got the jump on me and fired for a good .5-1 second before I turned and he died in one short burst from full health.  If they can improve the consistantly then the game will feel spot on imo.  I at least now feel like actually hitting people is more consistant even if the damage part isn't.  I do wonder if they have variable damage on some of the weapons instead of a flat amount at each range.  I know sniper rifles seem to always do the same, but I'm wondering if the lmg for example ALWAYS does 4 damage per bullet at max range, or is it more like 2-10.  Be interested in the answer.

Though work keeps telling me that I don't have any vacation time left (I took one week in Nov for CoD4 and my job offer states I get two weeks) I'm taking off next week for gaming goodness.

Hoping to get some gaming in with you guys and especially with Kato before he's off to 'play' BF for real frown

I'll understand if he doesn't want to play it though since he's going to have to deal with the unpleasantness of it all in reality though.

I can't speak for anyone but myself - but my personal desire was just a system to make PvP meaningful. Nothing fancy, but instead pretty much what they advertised and which was partially enabled in beta. The system they've announced for end of june - which is the same system with the fugitive thing on top of it, is more than enough and I'm happy with that.

I see this term - "meaningful (or meaningless) PvP" - thrown around a lot, but I really don't understand it. What kind of a meaning people expect from PvP?

Is it about the 20 PvP levels? But then it becomes just a meaningless PvP grind. There was a PvP grind in WoW and people still said the PvP was meaningless there. And does PvP lose its meaning once you are lvl 20 in PvP?

Is it elimination of "unfair" ganking? Hordes of PvP players both in WoW and in AoC loudly complain against these kinds of systems, stating that the whole point of FFA PvP is the "FFA" part.

I see a meaning in Siege PvP or RvR PvP, but you don't have to play on FFA PvP to have this.

So that's a "meaningful PvP?"

For me in order for pvp to be meaningful you need both a goal to fight for (which WAR should have with the realm war aspect and the way the keeps and control of zones works) and you have to have accountability.  In AoC there is absolutely zero accountability in pvp.  If you die, you lose nothing.  If I get jumped by someone and have an 'amazing' battle and barely win against insurmountable odds, so what, they'll be back in about 20-30 seconds (or the first guy I killed will be back and start fighting me again while I fight the second and third).  Then if they kill me, so what, I'll be back in 30 seconds or so and I'll start fighting again.  Fights in AoC can literally go on forever because there is nothing you're losing.  There's no incentive to fight, but there's also no incentive to not fight.  There's no reason to be cautious and this is leading to some people just standing there if you are fighting them, they don't fight back because you aren't costing them anything.  It also leads to people that just continually harass knowing they will lose but they are costing you time in dealing with them instead of what you were trying to do.  It's really the worst of allt he systems.

AoC WAS touted as having good endgame siege pvp and it's right there on the box.  IT simply doesn't exist in the game.  In addition to all the other complaints, apparently once you get a battlekeep up and running, you can't attack another battlekeep.  You can only attack a battlekeep if you have the ability to have a battlekeep but don't have one.  This means that eventually all the big guilds will have battlekeeps and won't be able to fight each other.  Pretty retarded.  Once you build a keep you can only do defenses and only against lesser guilds that don't have keeps already.

It's really just a shame, not only are things not near a retail state regarding the programming and patching, but they aren't even at a retail state in the design process and still don't even know how they want things to be.  They haven't thought the game out to the end yet.

Another misc bug that I thought was amusing in how bad it was:  Some guy rolled a 0 on a Need roll, the item was given to a guy in the group who rolled Greed and when a GM was contacted he said that's how it works because the Greed guy rolled higher. O_o

Ok I took a break from AoC a week or so ago. Don't gasp but I've never rolled up a character on a PvP server in any MMO.
But its time I tried it I think.

My main reason for not being interested before was how annoying it sounded. Trying to do quests getting killed by someone who is levels higher than you...that just didn't sound like fun.

But...I'm willing to see if Aoc is worth the effort in PvP.

Help me transition to this game style.

Is there a class in this game that seems best suited for PvP play and also questing and leveling?

I've played to the early 30's three classes......Guardian, Assassin, and Barbarian.

Any suggestions as to what class I should start on a PvP server?

At this stage, pvp in AoC is pretty irritating to me, but I'm an assassin slywink

Ranged abilities will help you greatly.

Keep in mind that until they change some things, there's no point to pvp on any of the servers though.
