I think the commercial is awesome and just displays what GTA could have been if they hadn't missed the mark and squandered away their own ideas.

First time I've seen assassins in patch notes, too bad it's not something I thought was a problem.  Hopefully if they ever fix stats working my ~300 dex will mean something. (of course by then other people's strength will be working so I'll be dead quicker slywink )

Agreed. I don't know if I'm necessarily a casual player (I have one char, a 42 barb, after 1 1/2 weeks) and while I've seen a few bugs and had some crashes (only in Old Tarantia though) I've probably had more fun with this game then any other MMO, with the exception of City of Heroes. I'm not focused on PvP right now so that probably helps, as well.

I think a large amount of my complaints are pvp related as well.  For a game that touted how revolutionary their pvp combat would be they didn't really put much thought into the pvp aspect.  I could probably ignore the bugs and shortcomings in pve better because when a mob beats you down in pve it doesn't talk shit slywink

I cancelled today.  too many bugs, game crashes on me every time I zone with the latest patch when it was fine before.  My class is ineffective against any non-cloth wearer that isn't more than 6 levels lower.  ( got frustrated and jumped a 40 barbarian with my 58 assassin and he got away pfft!)

I see great potential, and I did have fun for the first 40 levels or so, but the sheer quantity of problems finally bogged me down.  With another year the game could be pretty stellar as long as they add a harsher pvp death penalty

This is the third patch in a row that broke some important things while fixing others and changing still others without documenting them.

If I start my game I get two errors in the log that I have an invalid patcher key and one other error, and the memory leak is much much worse.  I'm still not convinced they test these patches before rolling them out or that they are testing them on systems running the same revisions as the live servers.  Take a gander through the tech support thread after this last patch and you'll see that it's not like a 'bad' patch on other mmorpg where most of the people complaining share a common vid card or cpu config that slipped through testing.  These are problems that slipped through and are affecting vast numbers of configurations.  It seems like they test it on one internal setup and then decide it's good to go if it loads ok.  That buff bug last patch was an example of something that could NOT have slipped by testing unless there was no testing to speak of.

For me it's not just the horrible communication, but it's also the way they are portraying themselves as inept programmers and tester who probably should not be working on a major release.  I couldn't do a better job (before someone tells me to slywink ) but the difference is that I realize this and am not working on a major release because of it.

Watching the game evolve from beta to now it's really just two steps forward and three back for me.

The game has great promise, great ideas, worst execution I've ever seen.  Thankfully I missed the AO launch.

Even solo, there is some really strange scaling going on.  Mobs 4 level higher than me are trivial but as soon as they are 5 levels higher they become impossible.  Similarly mobs 4 levels lower can't hit me at all.  They need to gradually scale difficulty instead of setting these apparently hardcoded limits.

this echoes some of my complaints as well.  Things go from too easy to impossible pretty quickly especially in a group.  If I try to hit something +5 I do 5-10 damage per hit, if I hit something my level it's 150 per hit, something -5 it's 500+ per hit.  That's a bit crazy and reminds me of DAOC before they fixed the purple issue.

I still see no reason at all to ever go into an epic dungeon. frown  They are too difficult (or too easy and just take too long) to be worth the time for the reward.  fighting the grey elites can take an eternity but the whole time they can't even outdamage my regen and I'm wearing cloth.

I guess I'll give it more time.  I thought I had a perfect opportunity with it when an enemy squad was clumped together for a defuse attempt, but it didn't seem to penetrate the ceiling and I didn't get a kill.

Nothing penetrates ceilings, they did that on purpose.  What the mortar will do is take all the walls down allowing you to kill them with your gun.  You can also use it on the few crates that are in the open for decent damage.  It works from the side if you have already removed walls and place it off center.  It's basically the same as the big arty except for damage capacity and aiming.  The big arty can't shoot through ceilings either.

To bo honest I've always felt like I do decent damage when a target isn't running from me.  My only problems are that a barbarian, ranger and guardian can do more in a single shot/combo than I can with my most powerful ability combined with the inability to catch anyone who turns and runs.  Right now the only people that don't turn and run are barbarians, rangers and guardians, go figure slywink

The mortar attack is mostly for clearing buildings/trees along with concentrations of enemies.  It's pretty useful overall imo.

My god the 'other' heli is just wicked.  I just played a round and went 26-0 in that beast.  With the other chopper, I can fly it more stable but can't kill without a gunner.  This one was just sick.

Not only did they not buff or fix any of the broken assassin stuff, but they now made it so you can evade an attack from behind which means we no longer get to backstab with impunity on a stationary target slywink

I love the way the US heli handles, but man those rockets suck.  I can do ok damage and distraction without a gunner but once I get a gunner we can turn the tide of the whole battle.  I just had a round with 24 minutes of flight time and we marched all the way to the final 2 crates before I lost a chopper.  was such a rush.

I've seen good results with one 4 man squad coordinating on a team of 'tards slywink

You can make a good push with 2 in the chopper and 2 on ground

On defense you can kick ass with 2 covering one crate and 2 either on the other crate or sweeping towards the enemy spawn.

Eventually the people who don't work well as a team will no longer be playing and the whole dynamic of the game will change.

I'm not opposed to having a 'non-realistic' way of healing, but I'd prefer it not be auto-regenning or pre-placed medkits throughout a level.

I like how it in Battlefield: Bad Company where the assault class can have an auto-injector that heals a bit and the support class can heal others by providing medkits.  It's incentive to work as a team and in that aspect the healing works.  Solo games I wish were just designed so that you didn't get hurt as often.  It's always a turn off for me playing a game where I can get shot by 100's of bullets and shrug it off whether by ducking behind a wall for 30 seconds or picking up the magical med pack across the hall.

oh yeah.. I've spent the last few levels staring quizzically at the screen anytime one of those came up for a combo.  what's even worse is I had been using the 2,3,4 keys for the attacks, and now it's all being thrown off by being forced to use 1,2,3.

oh, and I have to say the Mammoth is really, freaking... S.......




I use ~1234 for the five attacks.  since I was used to using 123 for the middle and didn't want to relearn it.  You can reprogram yours to however you want it on the key bindings menu.

Most of the skills work, they just have crap descriptions.

Run Speed is very useful even at 1% per 100 points imo.  Hang out with people who have it maxed and you'll notice a difference.

Recovery, fast recovery, bandaging, mana attracter and regen mana are all skills that only affect your regen rate while resting.  If you take all the points out of them and rest then put the points into them and rest you'll see the difference immediately.

COD4 was very fast paced and fast paced games don't really have a need for cover systems.  What a cover system does is slow down the pace and turn the game into more of a stop, think and shoot.  COD4 was so fast that there was no time for more cover than you could already get by crouching and moving slowly.

BF:BC is also fast paced AND has destructable terrain.  In both of these games there's not much a cover system would even add other than more buttons to manage.

R6 had a good cover system and it works well, but R6 is also a slower paced game with an emphasis on taking your time and getting into position without exposing yourself.  In Cod4 you should be sprinting if you are ever out in the open and behind something otherwise.  You can take cover without a cover system slywink

the rockets are a bitch.  Basically when I fly the chopper with the rockets my gunner gets 15-20 kills and I just fly.  When I fly the chopper with the minigum I get 15-20 kills and my gunner gets about 5. slywink 

With a good gunner (Jarrod is A #1 when it comes to this btw) I have been able to completely clean house and we've gone from the first base (as attackers) to the end with the heli accounting for about 50% of crate destruction and 100% of mayhem slywink

I disagree strongly.  COD4 obsolete?  Not sure how you can say that after playing it.  A well done cover system can add greatly to a game, but a poorly done one can kill a game.  I'd rather have a game without on than a game with a poorly implemented one anyday and I don't think we've hit the point yet where a cover system is a done deal.

What good would a cover system do in BF:BC anyway?  You take cover behind something and it'd be gone in about .5 seconds.

My biggest problem with the game right now is that it seems like it will be impossible to coordinate more than 4 people in a game.  If we could figure out a way to get 2 squads in games together on the same team we could just use a vent server for communications.

Game played great with the limited access preorders

Now that there is no limit on how many people can play I think EA's servers are fubar.  Same thing that happened with Burnout Paradise on release of both the demo and full game.  Hopefully they don't repeat and make us wait a week or two for stable gaming.

Had a 23 kill 14 minute streak in the heli with Jarrod last night, was very fun.  If the other team hasn't figured out how easy it is to shoot me down, it's a bit of a slaughter.

Now I just wish I could reset my unlocks since I screwed them up.  I have to wait until the release to use the guns I wanted.

That 'uber' weapon you refer to is the laser designator.  It's the unlock for the recon class (sniper).  You paint a vehicle or turret target for a few seconds and it calls in the airstrike and then you guide the missile into the target.  If you think it's uber I suggest you try it out, it's far from it.  Very hard to aim and very very limited blast radius so you have to aim well.  In beta it was extremely good, now it's just good.

Usually the first thing I do as far as unlocks go is to unlock the anti-vehicle option for each class.  (assault doesn't have one, but they start with the grenade launcher which is ok at it.)

#1: Gaydar!  OK, UAV's (which show the position of enemy soldiers, typically for a brief period) have been in these kind of games for a while now, and I understand the basic purpose of shortening the 'search' part of 'search-and-destroy', but this implementation is just too damn much.  Basically, a member of the opposing team 'looks' at you by placing the crosshair on you, and the game automatically 'spots' you (not a keypress like the PC BFs, but it had some flakiness in that it wouldn't consistently trigger).  Once spotted, your position is known to the entire enemy team.  Pretty standard, right?  Wait, not only does the enemy see you on their map or mini-map, IT PUTS A FRIGGING DOT ON YOUR LOCATION ON THE MAIN VIEWSCREEN.  Well, OK, some people don't understand maps, I get that.  Wait, IT ALSO UPDATES THIS INFORMATION IN REAL-TIME.  Well, maybe that helps people who nee- FOR LIKE 8 TO 10 FREAKING SECONDS!  Combine this mechanism with destructible walls, and I spent a lot of time madly running away from combat while an enemy Bradley destroyed every wall between me and him, then turning around and heading back when I thought my 'signature' had worn off.  Now, in my day, we used to call this kind of thing a 'wall hack', and it was generally reviled.  Now it's cool?  No.  It's still not cool.  Actually, there's too much of this onscreen information in general.  It doesn't really help me to see dots for every friendly within 10 miles, indeed it hurts if an enemy gets between us resulting in a slow threat identification.  I don't like that the crates have a 'shoot here' triangle for enemy boats or tanks to sit back and shell.  Will there be a hardcore mode without this egregious level of hand-holding?  Suck it up, noobs, read a friggin' objective description now and then why don't ya?
#2: Squad/team management.  I understand that in this context, the developers are smart to limit team-changing, but I've been on both sides of some severely unbalanced matches and there was nothing much to do about it except leave.  Is there some kind of autobalance now?  I seem to recall that it wouldn't even consistently add new players to the shorthanded team.  The squad system had the same problem of manageability.  I never figured out how to start a new squad or join a different squad (e.g. your only other squadmate just wants to practice his 'nap-in-the-earth' helo flying).  Am I hearing there is some kind of party system that will let me squad with Friends?  Anything new on that front?

These were the big ones.  I also wasn't crazy about some of the class decisions they made, but this is de rigeur with non-homogenous shooters.  For example, usually there's not much reason to be anything other than sniper.  Support is mostly useless, IMO.  The Anti-Tank weapon is really not much use against tanks, even square in the rear.  Of course, there may be other environments in the full game where these other classes come into their own.

What's the final disposition of the unlocks?  Initially, the 'buy-only' unlocks at the top were to be sold on Marketplace, or included in the Gold Edition.  I thought I'd heard that EA had decided to include these with the regular product, as the 'pay for advantage' aspect raised something of a stink.  Like Hark said, the 'non-buy' unlocks are mostly minor differences.  I think the main advantage to them is not having to rely on the weapons a particular army offers you for your bread-and-butter class; ie you can always use your unlock and get intimate with it.

Finally, I'll probably get the damn thing anyway.  I didn't really get into COD4 MP, but I look forward to fragging with some of you FPSers.  Look for MooseFoe (also for GTAIV now).

PS: Hi.

The 'gaydar' as you call it is no different than the system in BF2 where you could mark your target and it would show up on everyone's radar/hud.  The only small difference is that instead of pulling up a menu and selecting what the target is, it automatically calls out what it is.  You ONLY show up on radar if someone has spotted you and kept you in the center of their vision for more than about 1.5-2 seconds.  It's really not that hard to avoid if that's your game plan.  I like the dots because not only does it make it much easier to shoot the noobs, but when you get good at not being a dot, peopel assume you aren't there and it's much easier to kick their ass unseen slywink

If the crates weren't marked as such, the 50% of players that actually do try to attack or defend objectives wouldn't. slywink  Most but not all crates are in positions that boats, tanks and helis can't take them out easily anyway.  There's usually one every couple waypoints that is accessible to tanks.  If you let a tank kill the crate you deserve it anyway since it takes about a dozen rounds and no tank should live that long.

Regarding the auto-balance, it seems like it was in the beta, but not the demo.  Hopefully with full servers it won't be an issue but I agree that this could be a problem if they don't bring it back.

There are 5 weapons you can unlock prior to the games release btw.  If you're planning on playing it's worth looking into it at the game's official site.  One is for preordering, one for signing up for the newsletter, one for ranking to max in the demo, don't recall where the other two are.

I need a weapon unlocking 101 rundown.  Do I have this right?

Every other weapon unlocked through the game proper, but the aforementioned five you won't get until you hit the level cap?

there's the info on how to get each of the five weapons. 

One is for pre-ordering and you get the code when you pre-order.
One is for signing up for their newsletter and you get the code when you do.
One is for hitting max rank in the demo and you get the code when you do.
One is for hitting 'veteran' status in the full retail game.
One is for checking your stats on their stats page after release.

The stats are like the PC version of BF2 btw, it's pretty similar to what H3 did.

BTW, for ther record I was just starting to have enough survivability that I was having fun with PvE when I discovered the polearm technique that rendered my assassin useless in pvp.  Quite frustrating. 

If you stop by the assassin forums you can see all the posts of people who are level 80 and have put their assassins away.  There's also the rather amusing part that people are switching from the assassin to other classes and then going 'omg, this is so easy!' and levelling up to 40-50 in 2 days instead of 2 weeks.  It was quite a shock to myself, I know that.

icon_lol Sadly, there is some truth in there.  I'm realizing the simple mathematical difficulty in digging out of the .75 k/d hole I've gotten myself into. Maybe now with my newly learned shooter skillz (COD4 is the first online shooter I've played) I can start off on a better foot with BF.  Although more likely I will be getting gunned down by helicopter fire, stepping on mines and getting rolled over by tanks in no time.

Even if you're not much of a shot, there are plenty of ways to be helpful to the team in BF.  If nothing else pick support and follow me dropping medkits slywink  Just stay down so they don't shoot me trying to get ya.

-Hit indicator- I can't usually tell that I'm hitting someone.  Also, it really does take a lot of rounds (shaddup Hark!) to take someone down.

I  was also underwhelmed by the SP demo.  The MP, however, has been really really neat. I look forward to many GT nights of taking on the world.

You are right in that most of your complaints are noobish slywink  I'll go easy on ya though.

There is a hit indicator, it's a red semi-circle that pops up.  If you look for it, it's hard to miss so I'm not sure what your complaint  there is.  On the unlock screen the unlocks are in columns and each column is a kit. slywink  Not too hard to figure that out imo.

Squad communications is a key point and you are correct.  I think they do this so you can coordinate with squad mates without having to 'talk over' the rest of your team.  Considering all the squad level bonuses you get combined with the spawn on squad option I think it'll work out pretty well in the long run.

If you unlocked the med kit, then it was in the first column which is assault.

The demo does need a manual, but you can actually find all about the game including how to play at the official website.  Most of your questions would be answered there.  I still stand by my statement that it really doesn't take much to kill someone, if you find it does then you are probably shooting from beyond your weapons effective range.

I don't begrudge people on the official forums screaming bloody murder about their respective ATs, but when has any mmorpg launch not brought about the same complaints? For that matter, MMOs that have been out 5 years still have people complaining about class-balancing. If they had Diablo's original 3 classes (a melee character, a bow character and a mage), then balancing would be easy. I'm just convinced the price devs and players play for flexibility and a wide range of types is a balancing situation that's pretty much impossible to ever resolve to everyone's satisfaction, esp. trying to accommodate PvE and PvP styles at the same time.

BJ, there is a huge difference between wanting to be better, and wanting to be viable in the slightest.  Demos, Necros, Conqs and Bear Shaman are all classes that are a bit lacking and probably need more balance.  This is to be expected.

Assassins and HoX are completely broken and not functioning well enough to play the game.  I could go through the huge list of problems, but you obviously don't give a shit and just think people whine because they aren't overpowered.  The quick list is that the manual says Assassins do the most damage, yet a ranger of the same level shooting the same mob does 2x my sneak attack from 20m away while not stealthed.  That's broken.  I'm wearing cloth and have massive amounts of dex, yet a guardian in full plate has 3x the evade chance that I do.  That ain't right.

The final step was when a guardian 4 levels lower than me beat me in pvp by not using ANY combos or abilities after I got the jump on her.  I did a sneak attack, opened up with my biggest combo and got her to 50%.  From there she backed up, pulled out a polearm and ran circles around me swinging normal swings and as a dagger user with no snares, knockdowns, stuns, charges, lunges, etc, I never even hit her again.   If I get a sneak attack off on a mage class and catch them completely unaware, I MIGHT win.  If any class tries to go toe to toe and just stands there, I MIGHT win.  But the sad truth is that the way combat is set up right now, if you either just run away or run in circles, you will beat any assassin that doesn't kill you in one shot.

I've been on the 'gimp' side of classes before and sometimes for many years.  I played a hunter in DAOC and except for the first 2 weeks they were pretty useless in both PvE and PvP until the revamp 2 years later but I stuck with it.  They were not however completely 100% incapable of winning any fight vs someone who knows how to move.

I tend to gravitate towards classes people think are bad just to prove them wrong.  I do the same with builds. There just isnt' anything to work with here.  Squishy armor + no range + no CC = pointless class.  Sadly they will probably 'fix' it by just making the sneak attack do more and then we'll truly be one shot wonders. frown

I'm a bit baffled.  Two increses to abilities on two of the most overpowered classes and still nothing for the weakest.  I'm glad I shelved my character. frown
