while still having a blast with the game, I am seeing the issues with lag more and more along with a general clunkiness when trying to rapidly switch weapons.  Combined with the complete retardedness of the players and it's been a bit frustrating.  Still looking forward to friend play though.

I am working on posting some stats after watching the play by play, or at least a portion of it, on the team forums.  I am not real great at analyzing this stuff, so if anyone would want to step up and be the teams Defensive Coordinator, or Offensive Coordinator let me know.

As for play time I have gotten rid of almost every CPU player on the team to keep them from taking playtime from the actual human players.  Seems like regardless of depth chart the CPU puts CPU players in when they don't need to.

I am looking to add a 4th wide receiver to the team.  This past game the cpu 4th receiver still got like 40 plays, but I am pretty aggressive with my stamina settings to try and keep folks fresh, although perhaps too aggressive it looks like.  I am still looking for 2 backup DEs as they seem to burn energy quickly as well as a backup G, C, FB.  I may also need a backup FS and SS, as in the last game the cpu backup at those positions got about 45 plays each.

I'm a bit confused since I only got 45ish plays that game and the previous game I had 90 plays with the same stamina drain yet I didn't change my intensity.  Was this a setting change on your side that did it?  I was a bit surprised that they subbed me out.

The only thing that worries me about RvR is population balance.  I remember playing Midgard on Palomides and Albion having more players than Mid and Hib combined.  Made the frontier pointless unless you had a dedicated RvR team.

Anyway, I'm still looking forward to Warhammer.  As I got my CE pre-ordered already

I'm hoping that only two factions should help that a bit.  Also now Mythic has experience with merging servers for rvr purposes so we might get cross server rvr areas.

I wish I could be so easily satisfied as some of you then, maybe I wouldn't feel like I just threw away the $60.  With the quality of games I've played in this last year, I see no need to put up with the shortcomings of this game.

I also was put off right at the beginning when the exact same bump mapping texture was used on the external shots of the sub and then on the stone walls in the sewer.
8694  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Battlefield: Bad Company beta on: March 28, 2008, 04:30:09 PM
Did have a really laggy game today, was awful.

Also you can shoot doors off with the pistol.

I also had an issue playing on a team where nobody had a clue what they were doing except the entire other team and myself.  Scores on the other team were 150-90 down the list, scores on my team were 180 for me and 30 for second place.  Was the most frustrating thing I've dealt with in awhile.  This game should rock once we can put together our own squads, but the average person has no clue what they should be doing and it is starting to get to me.  Apparently the flashing icon on your map shouting 'COME HERE DUMBASS AND DEFUSE ME BEFORE YOU LOSE!' wasn't enough for them frown

We lost the complete map in under 5 minutes.

Eek. That is one of the conventions of gaming that I also thought was dying out as I hate hate hate it.  I hope that's temporary as I find that to be of grand annoyance.

It's setup that way because not all classes have grenades and the ones that don't have another device that fits into that slot that may not be just a throw and forget type weapon.  Grenades in this game are more of a utility weapon imo anyway.

Every room you spawn in has a way out, you just didn't see it.  Doors don't open, but there was probably a doorway or window you missed.  When in doubt, don't forget you can blow up walls.

I've found all the icons and such pretty straightforward, especially if you watch the tutorial vid when you first start the game up.

I still haven't had any lag or floaty aim, but it seems to be a problem from what I've read.

On a more serious note though, I think it's really cool that I went into Advanced Tactics before the game and set my tackling to "Power" - which clearly states you will miss more tackles but try to force more fumbles.  I will switch it for the next game and see if there is any difference.  I love the fact that they give you a choice!

After the next game Soulchilde should level up as well.  Can't wait.  So glad you posted this Arkon, as I probably would have totally missed it on OO.

Do SS's not get the 'Growl' skill?  It lowers their morale right before you try the tackle so you increase your chances.

I think jumping is a good investment but not until we get some better team speed and tackling we are missing a lot of tackles.  I think as a team we should go for the sure handed tackles and not worry as much about trying to strip the ball.
Sounds good, for the record I didn't miss my tackles slywink  I never try to force fumbles either since I'm not a strength powerhouse.  I'm focusing on the tackle bonuses in the skills along with vision and coverage to try to prevent any long plays on my side.

Right now my FS is focused on good tackling and vision and preventing anyone getting past him.  What is the team opinion on putting some focus towards catching/jumping and interceptions?  Should I stick with the tactics of never trying an interception unless I have double coverage or should I try to snag that ball more often?

I'm surprised, I dont' really find the graphics dated that much.  I play with all particle effects at max and AA'd out at 1920x1080 and the game looks pretty amazing still.

The game doesn't get 'grindy' imo until the 30's and they've toned that down greatly.  If you found it grindy pre-30 you probably hate every MMORPG since CoX is pretty light on grinding unless you're just trying to get a badge by killing 1000 of one type of mob.

This is a good illustration of why I never cared for voice chat.  Hearing little kids refer to me with non-applicable racial slurs is not, IMO, any sort of progress in the gaming experience.

It's nice that you can tell your team mates where a sniper is without having to type it, but having to hear people talk smack is kind of useless.

Thankfully the game makes it easy enough to mute people.  I typically spend the first 30 seconds of a match muting people who were irritating in the lobby slywink

Will probably pick up the others eventually since I like the game and will support it.  Same reason I buy the cars and tracks for Forza and the songs for Rock Band.

On the other hand, not having certain tracks for Rock Band doesn't put you at a disadvantage to other players.  I don't like FPS' on the consoles anyways but even if I did I wouldn't be buying this game out of principle. But I guess because of my preferences it's a moot point.

I don't think not having these guns is going to put anyone at a disadvantage.  They really did make parity between weapons.  For example all assault rifles have the same magazine size.  Differences between weapons is mostly cosmetic with the exception of shotguns (there are pump and semi) and sniper rifles (bolt action and semi) and in both of those cases there are semi versions that are unlockable with levelling up so you're still not at a disadvantage by not buying the weapons.  It's not like there are any weapons that are more effective that you can only buy, or that you can't drive a tank without buying the license. (boy would that suck)

BTW, not having a song does in fact put you at a disadvantage in multiplayer because you don't get to play that song... ever slywink  And there are cars in Forza that are strictly better than cars that came with the game and you have to buy them.  You are in fact at a disadvantage in a ranked race vs someone who paid to have the better car but nobody bitched when they released those.

Also, was it just me or was it hard to make out what the hell the other characters were saying? Seems more often than not the dialogue was drowned out by the overbearing dramatic music.

this is definitely true, and extremely annoying to those of us who like hearing or reading all the dialog.  this could have very easily been remedied by having subtitles, but there isn't even that option

I have one suggestion when you get the game: Set the Music and Sound FX to around 4 and have Voices set to 10. If you have Surround Sound thatís a big bonus. Dialog plays a major role in the story and really draws you in; you donít want to miss it.

That was the first thing I did and I still had a problem hearing voices.  I'm amazed any of you could hear them at all.  I hate in-game music so I always turn it down or off when I first play a game.

So far I like it fine. I am not in love with it, but i think it brings some cool innovation in the series. The weapons are cool, the specials are cool, the destructible environment stuff is fantastic and a lot of fun. Weapon aim is a it floaty, there is a ton of latency all the time, and there is woefully insufficient feedback for when you are hitting an enemy and when you in turn are being hit. Lots of little problems like that-the game needs a lot of polish IMO, and I am admittedly not in much of a gaming mood lately, but I still have fun with it and will probably play it a little more.

That's interesting that you say that.  Floaty aim and lack of feedback when hitting and being hit is my biggest pet peeve in any shooter.  It's the reason I couldn't enjoy Frontlines and Army of Two.  Having said that though, I found none of that in B:BC.  I always knew where I was getting tagged from, felt like I was taking people down effectively and had no floatiness whatsoever in the aiming.  Haven't had a laggy battle yet either after 7 hours of playing total.

After looking at how the various weapons work, I'm fine with the micro-transaction model.  There are weapons of close enough comparison available for unlocks that other than a completionist you don't really NEED the locked gear.  There are achievements in game (medals and the like) that require some of the locked weapons though I think they only require the ones you can unlock in-game and not the pay-to-unlock ones.

Because the gear that is pay-to-unlock is the pre-order stuff that would otherwise not be available to non-pre-orders at all I'm glad they at least offer the option to get them.

I have no problem with pay to play game models as long as they aren't a huge and continuous wallet drain.  If there was something like medkits or extra ammo available for real money I'd have a problem and not play out of principle.  As it is, by pre-ordering the Gold edition I'll get 6 of the 10 locked weapons anyway.  Will probably pick up the others eventually since I like the game and will support it.  Same reason I buy the cars and tracks for Forza and the songs for Rock Band.

On one hand I think if games are going to have a subscription model or continuous additions via micro-transactions then they should cost less than the $60, but then I realize that PC games were $50-$60 when I was in high school and the cost of gaming as a whole hasn't increased with inflation so I just deal with it.
8710  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: First 15 minutes of Dark Sector on PS3 on: March 27, 2008, 10:32:43 AM
I played a couple more hours last night and twice I had to stop and force myself to continue.  There's a scene in the sewars that's completely dark (even with brightness up a couple notches) where you get no less than 8 wave of badguys in cramped quarters coming at you.  You can't really see them and when they get close and you are near a wall the camera zooms in so all you see is the back of your dude and the back of his head.  Then when you take damage you get a bit of red mixed in with the blackness that makes it even harder to see.

The ability to buy weapons and customize them is pretty cool, but mostly irrelevant if controlling the weapons is such a pain.

I will say that guiding the glaive around in bullet time is a blast, if that's all you had to do in the game I'd play Duck Hunt - Glaive Edition.

I'm more than willing to sell the game to any of you who are seriously wanting to try it or think it'd be a good game for you.  As long as you know what you're getting into.  I'd just hate to take the $35 sting for a couple days of miserable gaming experiences if I trade it in for $25 frown There has to be someone who would actually enjoy this piece of crap slywink

8712  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: First 15 minutes of Dark Sector on PS3 on: March 26, 2008, 08:07:41 PM
I'm not saying the story or graphics are bad, though the reviews seem to think they might be.

I can say that throughout the opening I just thought 'so what' while I normally pay attention closely to dialogue and cutscenes.  Production values seem pretty low on the scripting.

In the first 30 minutes I fought two boss battles which is another pet peeve of mine in shooters.  I despise boss battles and enemies that are invincible other than a puzzle solution.

While it's true that the controls may grow on me over time, my point was that a good game shouldn't require more than a few moments for me to get my bearings.  I'm a very fast learner on control schemes.

Soul, the framerate and animation is fine, the controls are clunky, the animation isn't so bad.  Reloading when the glaive is out seems a bit bad I guess.  I feel like I'm driving a tank around instead of a dude. lol

Wow, that's pretty bad.

Just wondering but did you player Resident Evil 4 or Gears?  How do the controls stack up to those games?

I didn't play RE4 but I did play through Gears.  Gears controls were similar but I didn't have any aiming issues with Gears. Aiming was pretty smooth and natural.  In this game I found myself diving past cover into open areas, aiming for someone's head and the cursor would drift after I stopped moving it and stuff like that.  Gears didn't have those issues.
8714  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Rainbow Six Vegas 2 on: March 26, 2008, 05:21:23 PM
Another thought, I've noticed that the game loads into maps much faster, but isn't actually loading everything before it puts you in.  The tradeoff is that it's still loading textures and objects while you start playing.  In coop and vs this means there will be serious lag, both network and system load lag, while it loads the rest.  Sucks and obviously isn't optimal.

While I can't say the game overall is bad, and it's a definite improvement over the first, the bar for multiplayer quality has definitely been raised by COD4 and this game just comes in under the bar for me.  I have a lot of fun WHEN I'm in a good sized team game and playing, but they made it so hard to get to that point.

Battlefield: Bad Company and COD4 right now are the top of my chart on multiplayer playability.  Hopefully they don't botch the implementation of parties and grouping in the full version of B:BC

This makes no sense (of course I believe you, I'm not referring to your experience). We have a wide variety of boxes here-manufacture date, HDMI, Pro, Elite, Arcade, etc. And it appears that its maybe 50/50 experiencing slowdown vs. not. How does this make any sense?

Makes sense to me just because of the shoddy quality control.  The 360's out there have vastly different levels of heat and load tolerance.  Many systems are probably in various stages of over heating and RROD.  Different ambient temps may be a factor.  Either way, I'm not that surprised.  Long gone are the days where every console of the same type is indeed the same.

So far after about 30 minutes playing all I can say is neat concept but the controls are pretty horrid and unresponsive.  Most important part of any game for me is the controls.  I can overlook bad story, bad graphics, and occasionally bad design in general, but when I'm fighting controls I just won't play.
