So, today after I got off work I decided that instead of running out for dinner right away I'd go home first and let the dogs out.  I do that and then go out to grab some Chinese food (sweet and sour chicken, China's greatest invention since Fired Wonton) and I'm walking down the street when I hear a loud revving noise tjat overbears the sound of my music.  Being worried that a helicopter may be about to crash on me, I turn and behold a great sight.  I immediately switch my iPhone to camera mode and start snapping pictures.  I got about less than half of the beauties because they were moving quite quickly (with a police escort) and even though my iPhone showed me getting proper pics when I went through them later I found a bunch had snapped a second too late.  so, without further ado, I present the beauties:

She wanted to take a picture of you!  How sweet! you stud.   ninja

Any updates on the horrible client? The open beta ran like complete crap, totally turned me off. I learned from AO shenanigans that funcom can't be trusted in what they say. So just looking to see if they actually runs now. I don't have a horrible system by any means.

Thankfully it's nothing like the Open Beta client.  They really made a mistake ever letting people see that horrid thing.

In OB I crashed every 10-20 minutes, pretty much every time a new area would load.  Mem crashes, random crashes, you name it.  Thus far in this client I played 4 hours straight without a single crash, played solo and in group, zoned back and forth many times, keeping fingers crossed this will last.

Not that I want to re-hash this, but again I will point out the Open BETA is/was still a beta, not a DEMO (nor was it advertised as such), and they were very clear they were testing lots of different things with that particular client.  And it appears whatever it was they were testing was fixed.  Miracles do happen!  It's too common these days to go into any sort of beta test and subconsciously treat it like a demo, then get bitchy and disappointed when it's buggy.  Was it a mistake to do that?  Only time will tell - if this release client is any indication, then it was probably worth their while to make whatever adjustments were necessary from what they learned at OB.

Of course I understand what and how an open beta is, but when you put it up on a place like file planet, no matter what you call it, it's a demo.  People will see it as a demo and treat it as a demo.  You're much better off having it a completely closed beta if it's in the state that this OB was.  If I wasn't bored and looking for an MMO right now I would have passed based on what I saw combined with their history.  Instead I took a chance and am having a blast with a mostly smooth experience now that the servers are up.

Is there any reason for negativity yet?  Is there ever?  If it turns out poorly, it would be time to own one's disappointment.

As a (former?) game developer myself (do pedagogical sofware now), I can assure you they are working as hard as they can to make it work.

There is a reason for negativity for people who went through the same shit with AO.  A company should be able to learn from it's mistakes and plan ahead properly the second time it does something.  Bringing the server down within 5 minutes of a scheduled launch is pretty obviously piss poor planning.

There's always that possibility, but it's kinda like the boy who cried wolf in that it's easier for me to assume that they fucked up than it was something more honest just due to how they handled things in the past.  Track records count for something and I would think they'd be even more cautious after that.

To quote Forest Gump......Shit happens. It could have been something totally un-expected. Hard to warn people against something that you don't know is coming.
Just saying.

Do all the melee classes use specific direction presses to pull off their feats/skills?
Cause that looks like it would be fun as hell to play with a 360 controller plugged in.

yes, and later you get 5 directions, lower left, upper left, overhead, upper right, lower right.

Sadly I'm not sure how you could play decently on the 360 though since you also need access to about 2 dozen other buttons at all times

Thankfully....my desktop seems to be running it just fine at the moment....that probably means i'm gonna have to haul my whole friggin desktop to Austin next week though as i'm on a business trip....at least i should be able to setup the desktop in the hotel room somehow to play it in the evenings then though...

At this point all but a couple of my toons are either fly or super speed, or some combination thereof. Metal Mandroid actually has fly but didn't bother with hover at all (it's so sluggish as to be essentially useless).

If you intend to get Fly, you never, EVER get Hover. You're FAR better off getting Air Superiority. It's not only the best power pool attack in the entire game, it's also a really good melee attack, and it has a near 100% chance of knocking your opponent (that does far more damage in melee than at range) flat on their ass.

Personally, I just love the option of how you can travel around the game. If you want, you can run really fast (although, yes, it's a pain in the ass in some areas), fly (but it's the slowest travel power of them all), jump (a great combination of super speed and fly), or teleport (the fastest of the bunch, but it requires your constant attention). Going from point A to point B was never more fun.

I completely disagree with this, because using Fly in combat is a horrible idea and some classes do well fighting while hovering.  Flying while fighting gives you an accuracy penalty and an endurance penalty that I'd rather not have.  Plus manueverability while flying is a different beast in combat than hovering because you drift with inertia more.

apparently there is no way to use the flashback feature with the steering wheel frown  It wants you to use the left stick to adjust where you start over from and none of the controls are left stick.

I just played the demo and expected to hate it since I hated Dirt.  Loved it and will be getting this one.  Works great with the wheel and there are plenty of tuning options to get it just right.

Not going to compete with Forza for reality any time soon, but I love the in-car view and close action.

No one's really defending her. My position is that people are too harsh and judgemental about her, and that it's inappropriate and poor-mannered to use such words as "bitch" and "slut" when referring to a high school girl.

I knew lots of bitches and lots of sluts in high school.  Just because they are in high school doesn't make it any different.  Assuming they will always be that way is a mistake, but calling it what it is isn't.

There's a difference between being an dumb and being stupid and though I don't know if she's dumb, she sure as hell is stupid.

So when some high school kid starts yelling obscenities at you on the subway and then gets in a fight with the cops when they respond do you not feel like he was being an asshole and stupid?  Or do you just shrug and say 'heh, kids!'

How do you get to 80 on an FFA server? Can you level by ganking people? If not, won't you just be doing the boring pve stuff while being occupied by looking over your shoulder all the time?

Ale
That's exactly how you do it.  I preferred how it was in DAOC where you did get xp for pvp and could level up solely by pvp.  I don't think AoC has that option so I will in fact have to do PvE but it will be more exciting knowing that I have to be on my toes.  In the past I have literally fell asleep doing group pve, that's simply not an option here.

Hark come on, wouldn't you rather be playing with a large supply of people you've gamed with and trusted for almost a decade rather than be on a giant ffa gankfest? Like all of these games, when the rush of pvp is finally over, you'd rather play with people you know, and while having a group of 10+ is awesome, thats going to die down and you'll be stuck alone. PvP exists on all servers!

Come on!

No matter how many friends are on the server, I'd still be doing PvE with no excitement all the way up until I'm able to do the PvP I'm looking for.  And even once I'm able to go to the borderlands, I still have to keep going back to boring PvE until I'm 80.  I can't stress just how boring it is fighting computer AI that is 100% predictable with no chance of anything interesting happening.  It would be great to talk with all of you and use teamwork while doing it, but that doesn't make the act itself less boring, it just means I'm occupied while doing it.

The PvP server would not have been that bad of a choice if large numbers of people were playing together, because the types of people that gank, don't like facing groups.

Also, I'm only playing AoC until WAR, and I'd like to maximize my fun until then.

I know some people look at the idea of having to guard your back the whole time you XP on mobs to be a negative thing, but that little bit of excitement combined with the intense adrenaline burst when you DO get jumped or see someone approaching is well worth it to me.

I'd rather not do this:

Levels 1-40 boring
40 fun at borderlands
40-80 boring
80 would have fun on sieges and borderlands but will instead be playing WAR by then

When I can do this:

1-5 boring
6-80 fun

It'll take a lot longer to level up for sure, but most of the server is under the same constraints.

Hell, if WAR isn't out and I'm the only person playing AoC, I'll come over to the pve server because I'm sure you guys will have altitis by then and I can level up some.

Besides, if I always played where the Wanderers were despite not thinking I'd like it, I would have played SWG and Horizons  slywink  Notice I skipped both those games.    icon_lol

edit:  btw, server names are up in the other thread and I'll be on  Cimmeria.

Wish you guys the best of luck and I hope to see you in WAR!

I'm hoping we can do more of the non-racing types, but people either want to do cops and crooks (which is all the negative of racing AND deathmatch since it forces you to run away from the fights) or racing.

I'd like to do some Turf War, team deathmatch, races, GTA races, and organize some free mode activities.

For whatever reason, there's a bug with their registration system. You can NOT use your old AO user/pass to register Conan with. It just won't let you do so. That is what caused the confusion and such. There's also absolutely no mention anywhere that there was ever a limit to how many people they'd let in early.

I looked over the forum post - it's scary just how many complaints they're getting over this (or it's just the same poster - I don't know).

Finally - read the link I provided up top. The downloader is definitely a torrent. As of this moment, I'm finally getting 100KB+ a second, and have been sustaining that for a while now, but it's still FAR slower than torrents I've pulled before. I've actually capped out my download limit before by pulling the latest version of OpenOffice, so I know how well torrents can work. Blizzard's patch downloader used to be that efficient, too.

Odd you're getting such a slow rate then.  Maybe it's on a non-standard port or something.  My system is in the DMZ and the early access download maxed my bandwidth after being up only a few minutes.
