Nothing personal against Pete (or Fuzz who also has this same opinion) but it really irritates me when people that use tactics are accused of exploiting.  Camping (especially in a tactical shooter like R6) isn't cheap, or exploiting, or even unsportsmanlike, it's a very valid tactic.   Spawn camping on the other hand, is a bit iffy, but R6 had more than enough ways to counter that as well and in fact is the first game where I felt spawn camping wasn't completely unfair.
8562  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Army of Two - it's gonna be coop fun ladies! on: March 07, 2008, 03:57:34 PM
The floaty feeling combined with the lack of a decent mode that has more than two players is souring me on the game.  I love the weapon upgrade system and the coop dynamic though.  When you try to aim, it feels like the crosshair keeps drifting after you stop moving.  I dont' like the effect this has.

Also, having played COD4, R6 falls noticably short.  You aren't able to aim as accurately, the visuals aren't as clean or crisp, the distance you're able to see seems far more limited, but at least both treat you to floods of spawning enemies (although I don't remember COD4 sending in an army from behind, where you just wiped everyone out).

I actually don't think R6 uses spawning enemies. There's a set number of guys per area and once they're gone they're gone...COD4, if anything, could take a page out of that book for the better.

In Terrorist Hunt, the enemies spawned as you cross triggers and sometimes that would mean you'd clear a room at a dead end, turn around to leave and get shot by an enemy that just spawned in the room that has no other entrance.  This alone is what killed Terrorist Hunt Coop for me.  Instead of running around trying to find the last few terrorists, you end up running around trying to get them to spawn and hoping it's not behind you.
8564  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: [360] Army of Two...tonight? on: March 07, 2008, 02:51:34 AM
Fun concept, enjoyed co-op, but the controls are really giving me fits.  Versus multiplayer I thought had a lot of potential but they removed any persistant items from co-op and instead have a counterstrike system of earning money and spending it.  Combined with the horrid controls and responses I was very disappointed.   Add on top of that the fact that even in a private match after every round it disconnects everyone back to their main menu and I'm pretty pissed!

The Corruptor is COV's equivalent to a blaster, but is not exactly the same thing (has some different strengths).

A dev (Back Alley Brawler) pointed out a COH Wiki entry that has pics of all the different weapon customizations in both COH and COV (note that that COH/COV tend to share the same customization options for an equivalent class):
http://cityofheroes.wikia.com/wiki/Custom_Weapons

You can usually customize the colors at the costume shop too unless the item is too skinny to support the option (certain swords for example).

I checked on my villains a bit. I had a military themed Mastermind at 21, and a Thugs Mastermind that uses dual pistols at 14. Other than that, just a bunch in single digits, and maybe a stalker at 10. I really thought I'd love Masterminding but I found them (at the levels I could use them) horrific endurance-burners and the various low-medium level pets were not terribly effective. If I'd gotten any MM into the upper 20s and 30s I'm sure I would've had a better feeling but I lacked the patience.

MM's are bad at endurance when you try to play them like a blaster or corruptor that has pets.  If you let your pets do all the work and focus on the buffs/debuffs/heals of the set you can do about the same damage with little to no downtime and play advances very quickly.  As cool as the there pistol powers are in the thugs set, you're more effective overall if you skip either all three or just pick one up later.

Had a similar incident with Hotmail way back in the day.  My email address wouldn't take my password, which I was sure I was typing correctly.  I call Micro-New Dehli-Soft and talk to "Sam" (yea right) and he asks what I'm typing in for my password.  I tell him that is is more of a pass phrase...

My pass phrase was "FuckMicrosoftRightInTheAss"

Turns out that they had recently put in a password length limiter and my password needed to be changed.  I changed it right then to "MSCanEatMe" and all was good...for 24 hours.

"Your account has been suspended for inappropriate conduct"

Don't think I've used Hotmail since.

That's pretty amazing they would ban you for a password that nobody really should ever see.

MMOFPS!

I remember when the everquest creators tried to pull this off (Planetside?), and while the concept is interesting,  I'm pretty sure the execution there is bland and uninteresting.

The problem is, when playing an FPS there's a story. You move from point A, to point B, to point C, and the game evolves. If you're playing Halo, and you kill everything in point B, you don't have to run to point A so you can get the quest that leads you to point C, along the way re-killing all the baddies at point B again because they had the audacity to respawn.

You need that feeling of being in an actual evolving war. Something where you feel like you're pushing back the enemy while simultaneously the enemy is pushing ahead on another front. The world needs to actually evolve, something mumorpergers have never actually succeeded at. I don't want to play the same level of an FPS over and over again.

The point I'm trying to get at is simply none of the conventions of the term MMO work well with FPS. It's like trying to merge the flavor of Apple with Licorice. You'll get something disgusting that only weird fetishists like.

I loved Planetside and enjoyed the battles to take over different territories.  I always felt like I was in a war with a purpose.  Same with WWIIOL.

The people without injuries were the ones who ran off and were coming back when they died of hypothermia.
Meaning they were running from something.  MY guess is it was something like an avalanche.  Which doesnt cover all the bases.  However, it might not have been a huge one, just big enough.  Once they were frozen solid, more damage could have been done via weight.

No one theory will explain it, but you have to account for:

1) Why people would run for the trees, without proper attire.
2) What would cause damage to the people who didnt get out of the campground
3) What could have happened after they all died.

My guess is something bad was coming as such it was either run and possibly die, or stay and die.  What else would be up there thats that dangerous?  Polar bears/UFO's? smile  I assume it was mountain/snow related.
Whatever they ran from did a number on the misfits in camp.  Or something happened after they died, since no one else was nearby.
anyone who run froze to death on the way back to get more clothing/etc.

Orrrrrrrrr.....

Something happened, like a gas cloud of CO2 came through (Or some kinda serious cold front?) that killed people in short order.   The people in the tent ran, holding thier breaths or looking for some kinda solace further down the mountain.... Bah.. I'ma just say the simpsons are to blame, just dont know how yet smile

The people that had the injuries did get out of the campsite and actually were found further from the campsite than the uninjured ones according to the article.

Because of that I always try to pick the most solo friendly class in the games I try.

What if any is the general consensus on the best soloing class in CoV?

CoV? Either a Brute or a Mastermind. Depends on your playstyle (SMASH! or ordering minions to do your dirty work). Don't know the best builds off the top of my head (as I frankly never liked CoV for some reason).

In CoH it's definitely a /Regen or /Willpower Scrapper. You'll be mowing things down in no time at all.

If you can get over the hump in the middle, many of the dominators make good soloers imo.

Pretty much the only ones that don't are stalkers on the CoV side, they are just too squishy and require too much setup to solo efficiently.  I solo'd mine to 33 before I quit the game out of frustration.  Haven't really gone back to him since re-upping.

We've got three (and a fourth popped on apparently just to say high) on Virtue mostly CoV side.  Fully functional base with teleporters to the first 6 zones or so.  Most of us created newer characters so we're between 1-15 on average though I have a 33 villain and a 27 hero on the server.  It's a bit depressing looking through the supergroup list and seeing how many people we used to have and then to see 'Last Online : 890 days' by so many of them.

There's a couple of us on Virtue, mostly CoV but we have a base for both CoH and CoV.  I just upgraded the base to include all the storage options on the CoV side.  Dual Blades is very fun and looks smooth going between one power to the next in a combo.

The HD DVD player is not obtrusive, so I'm perfectly fine with it living in my entertainment system for quite some time.  And like it or not, I won't be watching any BR movies until the prices come down.  I'm simply not paying $400 for a movie player.  I didn't do it with HD, and I'm not doing it with BR, even though the war is over, so I may as well enjoy what I have.

If your HD DVD player breaks for any reason, you can't get a replacement easily and that means any movies you buy after today were definitely a poor investment.

I'm hoping M$ hurries up and makes a low cost BR addon for the 360, then I'll be happy.  Just bought my damn HD DVD too.

Doesn't take any perk to get away from martyrdom, just run.  The key is to always move as soon as you drop someone.  If you wait to see if they have martyrdom, it's too late, assume they do.  I rarely die from martyrdom even when knifing, only time I get tagged is if I'm boxed in or sometimes if they have sonic boom also I'll get caught in the blast.  Martyrdom can be annoying, but when you plan for it, it's a complete non-issue.

Most of the things you complain about are easily avoided if you are prepared for them, especially the early round 'nade spam.

Regarding spawns, I used to bitch a lot about the way spawns work in this game, but once you have a decent team it's not that bad at all.  The spawning is based on the location of your teammates, the only time you're going to get spawn camped for more than a death or two is if nobody is moving out of the area.  Most maps (crash has a place that can be a problem) if the team makes a concerted effort you can at least get one or two people out of a camped spawn so the team is spawning elsewhere.

My only complaint that still stands after many many hours of playtime is map balance.  Several of the maps simply favor the team that starts on a certain side (most often the US/Brit side.)

The Advent version only affects mines in the same system, so it's a bit different.

Also you can put more than one trade post in a system for extra cash inflow.
