Separate Batman from it and it remains a rock solid detective thriller that is brilliantly told. So what lesson did the head of WB take from it?

"Make every DC character we have into a movie that's dark and brooding."

What was brilliant about the detective story?  It didn't have a clever twist like "The Usual Suspects", it didn't have a complex villain - really he wants to destroy that is it.  Heck if you put it out of comic book land you are just baffled by how the Joker pays for all this stuff.  How he manages to wire a whole hospital to blow up without anyone noticing!  It takes demolition teams weeks to properly setup charges to demolish a building with many workers running wire all over.  Somehow the Joker and crew managed to do all that with no one noticing?  Or loading drums of gas onto a ferry?  So it is a rock solid detective thriller because of how clever the criminal was.  He had unlimited staff, funds time, and skill!  Is it rocks solid because the hero did clever detective work?  Except for the bullet thing (which again makes no sense outside of comic book land) he didn't "detect" anything.

What people liked was the gritty violence.  The darkness.  They equate that to a solid detective story.  So I would say that WB learned well.

Hate to argue over a movie, but did you even watch the movie?  He'd been stealing millions from the mob leading up to (and in the intro of) the movie.

Kato's been upgraded to fair condition and it looks like he'll survive.  Not sure the extent of any permanent damage yet.

He's also already asked about Warhammer Online and my plans on that so I'd say it's good 'ol Kato.  More when I get a chance.

The two classes I've got most playtime with are the Witch Hunter and the Witch Elf - because that's the kind of class that typically appeals to me. They both get exactly the same kind of abilities at the same level.

And yet again you completely missed the point.  You just compared two classes on opposite sides.  None of us were claiming that classes on opposite sides are very different.

Ok since you won't give an example of two classes on the same side that belong to the same archetype yet play very differently, I'll do it.

Warrior Priest vs Arch Mage.  WP gains points as he melees, he can then use these points to cast healing spells.  He has good armor so can take a beating while meleeing in the front line.  AM is a more traditional healer.  He doesn't have good armor so he stays back.  He's got good offensive dots.  The more offensive spells he casts, the more powerful his heals become and vice versa.  You've got to be crazy to think that these two healers play alike.  BTW if you've played Vanguard, think Disciple and Blood Mage.  It's not exactly like that but I'm pretty sure Mythic has had scouts playing VG.

You pinpointed what was bothering me about his statement and I couldn't put my finger on it.  Comparing the Witch Hunter to the Witch Elf and then complaining they aren't different enough is like saying that an Alliance Mage isn't different enough from a Horde Mage in WoW.  That's just silly.
8528  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Warhammer Online headed to Open Beta on 9/7 on: August 21, 2008, 08:32:51 AM
Even if we assume all the classes are absolutely identical to their counterpart (which we've already shown is not the case...) there are 10 classes per side.  There are only 9 classes in WoW.  How can you possibly be saying that the 10 classes are not more varied in abilities than the 9 in WoW?  I'm really confused about this whole thing.  I do want to be clear that I'm not trying to push your buttons in any way, I'm genuinely curious as to how you think there is less variety in a game that has 20 unique classes compared to a game that has 9...  It seems completely bonkers to me personally.

Dart, it sounds like you might not have explored the masteries system either since you were mentioning one tree and each class has three mastery trees.  The renown bonuses are just that, bonuses that let you tweak your playstyle on top of the masteries.

8533  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Warhammer Online headed to Open Beta on 9/7 on: August 20, 2008, 05:27:02 PM
I think playing to 15 should probably give you enough to see the difference.  Just boggles me that some people don't see it.  I guess people just see things differently somehow.  I don't see how you're doing any less in rvr in this game than you do in WoW or in DAOC.

I do think people (similar to what Arc just mentioned) are being overly harsh and are jaded from having put in so many hours in other games that they see anything that isn't revolutionarily (sp?) different as boring.

The game seems very deep to me, from abilities, to tactics, to morale abilities and usage to tactics used during combat.  The customization aspect of tactics combined with masteries and morale blow any of the other games out of the water for me with regards to customizing your character to your playstyle.

I actually tried one at the Arizona State Fair and was terribly disappointed.  The frying process liquified the filling which ran out prior to the treat being served, the batter was comperable to what is used to make corn dogs which seemed to overwhelm the underlying sponge cake, and it just paled in comparison to other deep fried treats such as Oreos and Snickers bars.

There's the first problem right there.  Funnel cake batter, not cornmeal, should be used on a fried twinkie.  The other big problem is failing to properly use a stick when frying the Twinkie, which results in puckering where the batter-covered Twinkie is handled before being inserted into the oil.  Finally, the Twinkie must be frozen before it is covered or the sponge cake and batter do not adhere properly to avoid seepage.

In my post over on OO, I did have the exact same experience that PeteRock did.  They did use a stick, and they did use a frozen twinkie.  I asked the nice ladies doing the frying how it was prepared.  They did use corn meal batter, and not funnel cake batter, but the end result was just as disgusting as PeteRock's.  I'm not sure how much of a difference the different batter would make, but obviously you had a different experience than I did.

The batter makes a huge difference, it's the difference between inedible and amazing.

Which tastes better to you, a funnel cake with frosted sugar, or a corndog minus the dog with frosted sugar. slywink

8537  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Warhammer Online headed to Open Beta on 9/7 on: August 20, 2008, 03:27:56 PM
I think the easiest way to explain my position is to compare it to football (american).

You're saying there are only 4 positions, you either throw the ball, try to get the ball and carry it into the endzone, try to get the ball from the other team, or you kick.  That's obviously way over-simplified.  Anyone who knows about football would laugh at the idea that there are only 4 positions.  While running backs and wide receivers and tight ends all theoretically are trying to do the same thing (much like all the healers) the way they do it is completely different.  Some run the ball from the start, some catch it and try to out manuever after the catch and some just flat out run for it.

Short of comparing some Destruction classes to their counterparts in Order, I can't name a single class that is even close to identical to another class.  Most cross-faction pairings have plenty of differences as well.   They aren't just cosmetic or superficial differences either, they are differences that change the way the class goes about it's duty.

Like Charl had posted, the Shaman and Archmage are 'identical' healers, same basic design, but even they are vastly different with the Archmage focused on instant cast dots and debuffs and the Shaman more on the nuking side of things.  These make them very different to play, and you have to use different tactics to do well.
8538  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Warhammer Online headed to Open Beta on 9/7 on: August 20, 2008, 02:55:06 PM
Well, I definitely disagree greatly with your statement that there are only 4 real classes.  I don't see this at all.  Having played all the different classes, I can definitely say that there is a very pronounced difference between the 6 healers for example.  They simply don't play the same.  Same goes for any of the other pairings.

I also disagree about your comments on the goals in RvR and the way it's played.  I'm ALWAYS reacting to what the other players are doing.  What they do determines what abilities I should use and how I should move and react.  It's most definitely not about 'just unloading all of your abilities'.

It's one thing to not feel that a game is for you, that I can understand, but if these are the reasons that you feel the game isn't for you, then I have to question your perceptions of the game as a whole.  I'm just not sure how you can come across feeling this way unless all you've done is read about the classes, played 1-2 of them in tier 1 and done scenarios.  Taking or defending a keep is definitely a very amazing experience imo.

While the basic core of the game is in fact that you are loosely in one of the 4 roles (ranged dps, melee dps, healing or tanking) there is a lot of overlap and even when there isn't the way you go about doing your job is different.

Questions for you guys that may know:

Regarding the full game and the way that user content is "shared"...

Is it true that Spore will populate other worlds with user created content?  If Yes...

(1) Is this done randomly?  How are the 18 bajillion creatures uploaded to the sporopedia chosen?

(2) Does the player have the control to "weed out" creations they don't like?  I'm sure it's been brought up numerous times before and I've missed it, but will I be able to make sure I don't have a bunch of penis creatures in my game?

(3) Is it an "all-or-nothing" proposition?  Either I allow user created content and hope I don't get lame creatures, or I don't allow user created content at all?

Any clarification on this would be great.  Thanks.

It's random with a preference for people on your friend's list.

You block anything you find offensive and you can also report it.

You can have it only load friend's content.

You can have it only load core content and no additional.

I have some bad news to report.  Here's a snippet from a message I got from Kato's wife.

"Just wanted to let you know whats happening with him at the moment.  Kato was injured on his last patrol by a rocket propelled grenade during a firefight.  His radial artery was severed (left arm) but he was able to apply a tourniquet to get the bleeding under control.  Was able to talk to his commanding officer and he said Kato was able to save two of his comrades (including his corpsman) while under fire.  Depending on his injury he might be flown to germany. "

I'll let you guys know more as I find out more.  We're still working on getting a package together for him and his squadmates.

Please keep his recovery in your thoughts and prayers.

Though his name is common (Bill on our invoice) and may be listed as the formal version.

Methinks small claims may be in my future.

There are address finders out there that help you begin to trace people:

For example

Also what does the bank that is allowing him to bounce checks say?  Do they gauruntee a right to privacy for what amounts to check fraud?  $4,000 in bad checks is pretty serious isn't it?  The PoPo might end up taking it pretty seriously too, if he's easy to track.

This is true, you need to get the bank and the police working together with you ASAP.  Putting a stop payment on an item you purchased is a form of fraud and I know it's a felony in this state.  The quicker you get both of those involved the more likely you are to get it resolved.

AoC made grouping pointless for most PvE.  The elite zones designed for groups was another laughable hack that they tacked on last moment.  You won't ever have trouble finding a group in WAR.  Yeah I know that's a bold statement, but it's true.  The only exception being if you are playing at 4am and there are 10 people on the server, then it might be hard.

I don't think there will be a problem finding a group even then slywink  If I can find a group with limited population of late night closed beta, should be fine on release.
