I'd also like to add that I work at a place where exactly zero of my 50+ co-workers are gamers, but I was perfectly fine with taking a week off to play WoW TCG at the pro level and tell them what I was doing and I'm taking time off when Warhammer comes out and they know that as well.

I don't run around yelling 'games are great, if you don't like them you're not!' but I'm not going to hide what I do in my spare time, or lie to my employers.  If I got passed over for a promotion I obviously should have, I shouldn't be working there and would look elsewhere.  I wouldn't dwell on whether they hate my gaming or not.

I'm not a conformist though and I'm pretty jaded about professional environments anyway since they are mostly about posturing and pointing fingers while covering your ass instead of actually communicating, dividing up work and getting shit down efficiently.

Sorry man but that's just a fancy way of saying you are insecure. If the situation were that you would actually be fired or demoted due to the fact that your boss or co-workers know you play video games then I fully understand. But if you're afraid of what they'll think of you on a personal level for playing video games then you are insecure about it. I think that, if anything, GTA4 will go a long way to show that video games aren't all about skinny men who look like women and wield huge swords or a fat plummers who saves princesses.

I think you'll find that what people think of you on a personal level has a very real effect on your job evaluation.  That may not be how it should be, but that's certainly how it is in a lot of industries.

I value my own self image enough that I'd rather make less and be myself than put up a front to make more.  If you can't be yourself at your workplace and have to hide one of your primary hobbies, that's pretty hard for me to grasp.  Personally that would drive me crazy.

I'd like to add that anyone not planning on playing on an open PVP server should check out the Wanderers.  Great group of guys to play with and they should have good numbers for the end game sieges.  ( just try not to get bored doing quests slywink )

Had a blast playing with Harkonis during the FFA PVP Beta Ending Event.  It was just the two of us, but we pretty much destroyed anyone we came across  icon_twisted icon_twisted

Was awesome fun, I definitely have to say that after playing the FFA portion of beta, I'd be downright bored without the open world pvp.  It was great fun with Kato and I watching each other's backs while questing and xp'ing.  Added a great deal of excitement to the game.  Very few frustrating 'gank' moments and usually it was just in the starter towns where the average joe figures he could/would/should attack anything that moves.

Would love to have more people for the pvp experience on the PVP-RP server come launch.  Let Kato or myself know and we'll get you in the guild slywink  All classes welcome and as long as we play together any class is viable.

If you will be playing solo often I'd suggest avoiding Necromancers since they seem to be pretty hard to keep alive solo in the pvp environment at lower levels.

9hrs left on my download.  I hope to see many of you on Sat.

Kato, did you decide on a main character for release?
8485  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: AoC - Wanderers now Recruiting!! (Standard Server) on: May 12, 2008, 08:54:46 AM
I'd like to offer the PVP alternative as well.

I'd really like to play with you guys and miss playing with all of you, but after playing the OB in both pve and pvp modes, the pve was quite boring to me.

We've got a group of 3 so far for PVP-RP, please let me know if anyone is interested in either pvp server with an alt, or would rather do pvp than pve.

I'm surprised after the excitement that was the Wanderers in Shadowbane that more people didn't want to do the pvp thing.  When OB turned to FFA PvP the game played just like it.

I'll probably have an alt on the pve server just to see you guys, but my time will mostly be on the PvP-RP server.

I want this discussion from the ones who *weren't* voting for him because there really only should have been 2 reasons to NOT vote for him.
(1) Athena had checked him and received Human as result
(2) He is a Cylon and the others didn't want to finish him off. The hesitation should tell us something.
(3) His cries of "putting on make-up" and forecasting a "bitch-fight" if anyone else made a claim to Starbuck actually made some people (can I get a witness?) think: "My Gods, is he dropping hints at being Starbuck or Athena here??  Yeesh!"    I would like you to tell me why you didn't consider that at all...   I'l also point out that you seem to be fishing for Athena just there in your lists of the Only 2 Reasons why people wouldn't vote for Rickfc.

If he hadn't posted this:
Quote
Let's say for a moment that I'm a good guy special.  Why in blazes would I announce that when facing the possibility of death when in previous conversations, others who had voted for me weren't sure and were already on the verge of withdrawing their vote?  Don't you think that'd be a bad play on my part as a special?
I would have simply put him over with a vote...

My hesitation was that it didn't seem like Rickfc appreciated the ramifications of dieing as a special without at least declaring it (being believed or not).
I dare say, I was totally correct - so frak off.   icon_wink

Unagi on point 3 - I saw that and made a mental note to myself...in essence thinking..."he wouldn't be that obvious would he?"

CR- i find the way you are leading this discussion to be odd. It seems as if you are painting the whole discussion as if he COULD BE EVIL - not the opposite...where HE COULD BE GOOD

I also find it odd that instead of giving him a bit of skeptical reason, and plowing into the people who did vote for him; you are dancing around the whole is he starbuck scenario....if he is starbuck....and i think he is.....why arent we looking at the folks who did vote for him?

Lets take that a step further...say that the cylons did attack Rickfc last night....wouldn't today be a GREAT day to try to vote him off, wouldn't we be doing their work? They know would know who he is...if that is the case....then you know that they would try to get him lynched today.

It really seems to me right now CR that you are fishing for something....and we are all looking for information, but I am uneasy where you are leading hte discussion here.

And again - i dont like the fact that you are discounting the skeptical category in your analysis of who DIDN"T vote for him and are trying to pigeon hole the folks who didn't vote for him.

This brings me back to my earlier post regarding the people who seem bent on suggesting which way we take things and who we lynch.  Granted some of them might just be naturally controlling.

(1) Does a Starbuck counterclaim?
Actually, this is a really good and hard question.  I'm not sure there really is a right answer to this.
There are obvious reasons not to counter-claim (because a "real Starbuck" knows they would have made this play for that very reason - to out him, and knows that this "fake Starbuck" will eventually be called out on it... and there is not much danger to letting that happen... keeps you private...)
There are some good reasons to counter-claim (To get us a cylon, or perhaps to prevent a weird No-Kill confusion later, etc).
I am honestly not sure.  I am not Starbuck, but if I were - I really would be torn on this one.

(2) Is rickfc in danger of being killed tonight?
Not sure what the point of this question is.
Yes, if he's not a cylon, he's in grave danger tonight.
No, if he's a cylon - he won't be killed.

(3) What are our plans in the event he were to live til tomorrow?
(I presume this question is taken with the assumption of no counter-claim)
(Also, the answer to this grows in complexity if there is No Kill again tonight, right?)
I think perhaps we don't lynch him until he lives 2 nights?
If he lives tonight - it could mean that they actually did find #12 last night and they fear he can protect himself tonight.
If he lives tonight (and no one dies) - it could mean he was able to self-protect.
If he lives tonight (and no one dies) - it could mean that he just successfully forced the cylons to kill/discover him as Cylon#12, but hmmm - that would maybe be a thought.  I'd need to think about that scenarios some more.... That would mean that our first night's NoKill was not finding Cylone#12, but also not stumbling on Starbuck.  I'm sure I will be told later the odds of this are almost Nil.
I will be surprised if he lives though, so I'll think more about all of that if it happens.

(4) Should he act as Polish Minesweeper?
I will answer with the presumption that Rickfc is Starbuck and self-protected...
No - I already said this in reply to Harkonis, there is no way to tell if he uncovered a mine or if the mine came and hit him over the head with a brick.

(2) Is rickfc in danger of being killed tonight? If contested? If uncontested?
(3) What are our plans in the event he were to live til tomorrow?
(4) Should he act as Polish Minesweeper? Could we trust the results?

            4- Chaosraven- ,
               5- raven 7- ,
                 6- brendan- ,
                    7 - soulchilde-

- harkonis then removes bringing KFC to 6

RICKFC now stands at 6

Two of those people(at least) are cyclons. The last may not have wanted the suspicion of pulling the trigger. The debate has gone on long enough that it wouldn't have been out of place for rickFC become the first victim.

Oh, and the likelyhood of rickfc being starbuck is about the same as him being 12 (1 in 12 for both). On top of that, he could have been protected due to his comment but that hinges on someone interpreting him calling for help and then choosing to trust his comment (1 in 12 based on a % less than 50). It is also just as likely that rickfc was not the target, and that someone else defended themselves or was discovered to be 12.

I'm not against taking rickfc out, but there's gotta be more to this than his flamboyant nature.

Oh, and bigger letters does not the truth make. Methinks the lady doth protest too much.

It seems like the GT thing to do is to say you are X role here, even when you aren't. I think the lynch wagon is taking that bit out of proportion. If he was just kidding....then your argument falls flat out. I know we dont have a lot to go on, but he has reached 7 now, so I bet at least one person there is a wolf.
No it doesn't.  My thoughts are not based upon the idea of his being truthfull about being Helo (heck, I assume at this point he was lying or else he would have pulled his gun and backed us all off while we await his shot).  My thoughts are this....you are the Cylons looking to get rid of specials.  One, who has made the play before and been telling the truth, claims a role openly.  Do you pass on that chance?  I think not.  So he was either targeted IMO or Cylon.  What better target would there be for them on a blank first choice?

If whoever is Starbuck took rickfc at his word that he was Helo, isn't it possible that he was defended on the first night?
8501  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Battlestar Galactica Game- Day 1 -Everyone alive! on: May 09, 2008, 06:38:05 PM
Reasons are based on Remus' post.  If we have good odds that rickfc is either 12 or starbuck, I don't really want to lynch either.  lynch starbuck and we do their job for them since they would obviously take him out tonight if we don't.  Lynch 12 and he's gonna blow.  If rickfc lives tonight then remus was either completely wrong or rickfc IS 12 and we should shoot him with helo imo.

I just don't want to be on the band wagon that takes out starbuck and it does seem like we're heading that way.

Newcastle, I remember the game you are talking about with regards to Chaosraven putting the numbers 1 and 2 in his posts.  That is part of the reason I said Unagi's "evidence post" was much better than anything you pointed to.  In that post he actually did put 1 and 2 in order.  I still do not think he is as likely as rickfc.

I thought I had made my opinion of rickfc clear.  It is not a lock but I do feel it is better than the other arguments out there right now.  Since folks seem to not understand it though I will restate it.

Early in the night rickfc posted that he had the ability to shoot someone and was not afraid to use it.  Essentially saying "I am Helo".  Given that it was the first night what better target was going to present itself to the cylons?  Yet he is still alive.  We have already covered the possibility of what happened last night.  Either a protection or a hook-up with 12.  From there we assume that rickfc was last night's attack target.  Which means he is either Starbuck or cylon.  I see absolutely zero reasons for Starbuck to pretend to be Helo.  Why attract the attention of the cylons?  Why risk having the real Helo call him out and thus out them both day 1? (this thing bites both ways though because I'm am not clear why a cylon would risk being called out by Helo either)
If rickfc was not the target last night then why not?  That implies he is Cavil or 6.

So I see 4 possibilities for why rickfc survived the night 3 of which are cylons.  The fourth would be a Starbuck the cylons already know about.

As for Scoop's avatar comment I assumed he said it for the same reason I miss them.  I identify a lot of posters by their avatar and it makes it harder to keep track of people when they change or (in this case) are removed entirely.  Thus I have not spent much time puzzling over it.

I'm not sure I'd read further into Proner trying to 'out' me other than the fact that he's always prodding me when we play on Live. slywink  He just likes to mess with me like that and it's probably spilling over.  Though if he has any real reason to single me out I'd love to hear it since I have no idea what it could be.

Alright, I read through the novels of Newcastle and the short little semi-accusatory post by stessier and I have to say that you both make little to no sense.

The post Unagi presented seems much more suggestive of Scoop as 12 then the posts Newcastle has presented.  I thought I reached for some things on day 1 but to say that posts containing 6 words are a signal that he is 12?  I do not get that at all.  I highly doubt that 12 is actually stupid enough to bother signalling the other cylons as to his identity at all.  He has no need to.  They target him and hook up, great, lovely for them.  Except that everyone has been pointing out since the beginning of the day how that actually benefits US not them.  They essentially trade a kill for hooking up.  Sure, maybe a little more coordination of efforts there but it is still a lost kill.  Also, why have folks (read Newcastle) dropped the idea of a hook-up last night instead of a self-protecting Starbuck?  Do you know something we do not?

stessier, I really do not get your suggestion that Newcastle is 12.  For mispelling Cavil?  How does that make any sense at all?

I can see where if the Cylons knew who 12 was they could actually avoid hooking up and therefore not waste a kill, but they'd have to be pretty sure and I don't see how they could without hooking up.  Either way I kinda think that the 12 dynamic helps us instead of hinder in the long run with the obvious exception of him going boom.

So when you have no concrete data to go on at all, how do you decide who to lynch, just pick someone at random and stick to it, or pile on when someone gets a few votes?

/ starts wondering aloud if Harkonis is acting clueless for reals or as an act...  hmmmm

I'm not clueless, I'm just not familiar with the intricacies of the politics of this game.  There's a reason I got tagged by both sides in the previous two games smile  I'm trying to learn from mistakes this time through.

As an aside, how long do these games usually last?  I may be gone for the weekend.

Xenophobe, Rampage, Disks of Tron, Demolition Derby, Star Wars (the line graphic one) were probably my favorites.

I also liked Moon Rover

slywink  Withdraw Remus, vote Unagi

Always love it when this happens.  nod

You have something personal against Unagi?  Or do you just want Remus to stay alive?  ninja

Even normal citizens don't want people to know they are normal or they will be shot eventually.

 saywhat

What kind of Hunter's have you played with?

I meant shot by the cylons, I originally typed eaten then realized that the cylons don't eat in this game.  wasn't implying the hunter special.

OK, Free Lesson:

At night the Cylons will kill someone.   There is No Question about that.  And they won't be killing their own.
Who's that leave?
If you are a normal powerless citizen, why - Oh WHY - would you rather they kill your neighbor - who could very well be Starbuck or Athena, etc???
You being shot (or whatever) by cylons is exactly what you should want.

That's the problem with your focus of YOUR survival, you don't seem to give a rat's ass about OUR survival.

Aha! See, that's the kind of advice I was looking for and it makes perfect sense.  So as a citizen I WANT the cylons to think I'm a special to take one for the team as it were.

This should be quite easy then, I'm Starthenapollo!

Visuals look good, gameplay is going to make or break it though.  I'd much rather just have a third person camera to give me real body awareness.

I'm not sure I'd consider third person as being the same as body awareness since you're playing third person slywink
