Hark come on, wouldn't you rather be playing with a large supply of people you've gamed with and trusted for almost a decade rather than be on a giant ffa gankfest? Like all of these games, when the rush of pvp is finally over, you'd rather play with people you know, and while having a group of 10+ is awesome, thats going to die down and you'll be stuck alone. PvP exists on all servers!

Come on!

No matter how many friends are on the server, I'd still be doing PvE with no excitement all the way up until I'm able to do the PvP I'm looking for.  And even once I'm able to go to the borderlands, I still have to keep going back to boring PvE until I'm 80.  I can't stress just how boring it is fighting computer AI that is 100% predictable with no chance of anything interesting happening.  It would be great to talk with all of you and use teamwork while doing it, but that doesn't make the act itself less boring, it just means I'm occupied while doing it.

The PvP server would not have been that bad of a choice if large numbers of people were playing together, because the types of people that gank, don't like facing groups.

Also, I'm only playing AoC until WAR, and I'd like to maximize my fun until then.

I know some people look at the idea of having to guard your back the whole time you XP on mobs to be a negative thing, but that little bit of excitement combined with the intense adrenaline burst when you DO get jumped or see someone approaching is well worth it to me.

I'd rather not do this:

Levels 1-40 boring
40 fun at borderlands
40-80 boring
80 would have fun on sieges and borderlands but will instead be playing WAR by then

When I can do this:

1-5 boring
6-80 fun

It'll take a lot longer to level up for sure, but most of the server is under the same constraints.

Hell, if WAR isn't out and I'm the only person playing AoC, I'll come over to the pve server because I'm sure you guys will have altitis by then and I can level up some.

Besides, if I always played where the Wanderers were despite not thinking I'd like it, I would have played SWG and Horizons  slywink  Notice I skipped both those games.    icon_lol

edit:  btw, server names are up in the other thread and I'll be on  Cimmeria.

Wish you guys the best of luck and I hope to see you in WAR!

I'm hoping we can do more of the non-racing types, but people either want to do cops and crooks (which is all the negative of racing AND deathmatch since it forces you to run away from the fights) or racing.

I'd like to do some Turf War, team deathmatch, races, GTA races, and organize some free mode activities.

For whatever reason, there's a bug with their registration system. You can NOT use your old AO user/pass to register Conan with. It just won't let you do so. That is what caused the confusion and such. There's also absolutely no mention anywhere that there was ever a limit to how many people they'd let in early.

I looked over the forum post - it's scary just how many complaints they're getting over this (or it's just the same poster - I don't know).

Finally - read the link I provided up top. The downloader is definitely a torrent. As of this moment, I'm finally getting 100KB+ a second, and have been sustaining that for a while now, but it's still FAR slower than torrents I've pulled before. I've actually capped out my download limit before by pulling the latest version of OpenOffice, so I know how well torrents can work. Blizzard's patch downloader used to be that efficient, too.

Odd you're getting such a slow rate then.  Maybe it's on a non-standard port or something.  My system is in the DMZ and the early access download maxed my bandwidth after being up only a few minutes.

Still waiting on the official release of server names.  I'll be heading to an RP-PVP server, tentatively to Asgard since it's winning the vote, but it's also winning for EU so we'll have to wait and see.

Basic forums for the pvp chaps is up at www.harkonis.com

Thanks for the good luck Cort, sorry to see you guys split.

hmm, ok, must be because of my old Anarchy Online account there, that its borked somehow..for nothing shows up under products about Conan, even though I entered the pre-order code...

wow - I've never seen a forum thread explode like this...every minute, around 20 or so new posts are entered about the shutting down the EA..

http://forums.ageofconan.com/forumdisplay.php?f=2

EDIT: seems I'm not the only one with the old anarchy account problem...they really should have cleared this up beforehand - probably why they didnt answer my email either... Anyone have any experience with calling companies like this, and know if it does any good?

I put my key in on my old AO account and though I had to use a different subscription name it took fine and I got in the EA.  Not sure why everyone is having problems.

Well I've already paid for early access and it's credited on my account, I just haven't gotten an email about it and don't see anything on my Funcom account page.

I avoided using that cachefly.net link because I'm wary of non-official sources.

I did notice that my account Status says "Open: Log in and play the game" on my account page, so maybe they just extend my closed beta straight into retail.  I dont' know...

the cachefly.net link IS the official link

Alright, so it's actually fortunate that 12 was the first cylon killed, yes?
Actually, I'd say - No.  He exploded and there is a pretty good chance he took out Athena, if not - he took our numbers down.  We wanted to kill him last - or Helo-shoot him... Any other result is #12 doing what #12 was designed to do - and he wasn't designed for good.

Regardless of whether Harkonis was contacted on the first night by the other two cylons, he knew who they were.  Consequently, his posts could be illustrative, right?  My presumption is that, yes, cylons are willing to vote for cylons in order to establish their bona fides as humans, but Harkonis withdrew a vote on rickfc that would eventually have killed rick in short order.  My guess would be that he had, in fact, been in contact with the other two - and that they decided they'd just wait until the evening to get rick because they knew he was Starbuck and couldn't self-protect.  So, they dedicated themselves to either finding another patsy (perhaps pr0ner).  When it became clear that Harkonis was under suspicion, they just took the easy way out of sacrificing him to take out the presumed Athena.  I would also guess that at least one other cylon voted for Harkonis.

This is, I admit, somewhat of an intuitive leap.

Quote from: Unagi

Quote from: Brendan on May 14, 2008, 03:58:26 PM

Even though he took out pr0ner (who, as Austin suspects, was probably Athena), he's the only guy in the game who knew who all three bad guys were from the start.
I'm not seeing the value in eliminating the 1 bad guy that knew who all 3 were... but OK...

I just meant that we could attempt to infer who the other two were from Harkonis' posting history, whereas if we'd killed one of the "normal" cylons, we couldn't assume that they'd have known who #12 was.

Quote from: Unagi

Quote from: Brendan on May 14, 2008, 03:58:26 PM

He declared an interest in killing usulofdoom, attempted to implicate chaosraven, argued with Austin, and speculated that Helo should shoot Scoop.  I guess that reduces the suspicion level on at least a few of those guys.  I want to go through and see if there's anyone he didn't interact with at all.
No no no no..  The very last thing that does, is reduce the suspicion level on the people he wanted to kill.  Hello??

I guess that depends on how subtle you think Harkonis was.

I'll have a forum setup at www.harkonis.com for us and we can get together to put the guild up.

Hey Hark, is your group of PvP server players the same or a part of the group that Crux mentioned in the Wanderers recruitment post?
If they are separate groups it might be worthwhile to connect with him on that so we can roll on the same server to increase the ranks.

Also, this might be a little early into it, but have people started picking classes yet?
Just want to get a feel for what direction the PvP folks will each go in so that I can play the "fill the gap" class.

Downloaded the early access yesterday and ran the install while I was away at work.
I must agree, that was some snazzy fast client download as somebody mentioned earlier.
Patched it up this morning and it looks like it's ready to go for Saturday.

It's a separate group right now, but I'm working on getting us together.  At the least on the same server and hopefully in the same guild.  That would give us around 20 people which is pretty close to the minimum for the guild town and activities.

Confirmed classes that I know of as mains are an assassin, guardian and demonologist.  Could use one of the healing classes and pretty much anything else will do.

I missed the show and can't find the Henning clip anywhere.  My google-fu fails me. frown

I remember being a fan of Doug Henning as a child even though I saw through a lot of the tricks.  We went to one of his shows when I was <5 and I called him on it and it was a bit embarassing overall smile  He pulled a coin from my ear and I said loudly that I saw it in his hand before.  oops!

If you are waiting for incontrovertible proof on Day 1, you're never going to get to vote.

Not saying you should be convinced by what Unagi posted (personally, I think it shows absolutely nothing), but you may want to reconsider the standard by which you place your vote.

You didn't vote much the last time you were a wolf either, did you?

I also didn't find Unagi's write-up to provide anything incriminating fwiw.  He either missed what I thought were oddities or he didn't find them odd.  /shrug.

That would be because what I posted had nothing to do with the game and I was just being social and you apparently think the way I'm social is an oddity. Tongue

other than where you spawn, what's really different about this and shadowbane?  both were ffa pvp.

A lot of things, they actually thought about PvP and consequences.  SB kept track of who killed you so you can get your revenge.  They actually put some thought into stealh, SB had classes that could hunt down stealthers.   There was a point to PK, i.e. you get loot.  Also outside of the city/mine fighting, there was also a point to fight for rune drops.  What are you fighting for in AoC?  PvP xp which currently has no effect.  Leveling up was super easy in SB so you couldn't really say that hardcore players have a huge advantage over you.  And with regards to that last point, I know you personally are pretty hardcore at these games and will likely shoot up to 80 very quickly on the FFA server (any vacation coming up? slywink).  For others who take a more casual approach, they are going to be left behind and have to deal with higher level pwning them as they try to catchup.  What you didn't experience in the FFA open beta event is level 80s coming in and pwning everyone at quest hubs.  Sure it might be fun to get revenge if you are of comparative level but that's only fun for those that have ground to 80.

Instance switching to hide from PKs seems like a bit of a hack.  In SB you had 360 degrees of movement but AoC is much more linear which means it's easy to control the entire zone by just watching some choke points.  This would be very hard to do in SB.  I suppose the ganker mentality people might actually consider these bottlenecks a good feature.

Anyway, I understand why you guys want to play in FFA, I'm just trying to explain why AoC implementation (or lack thereof) of FFA ruleset has no appeal to me personally.  The only positive aspect of FFA, i.e. the added element of danger in PvE is obviously not as important to me as it is to some of you guys.

I'll agree with a lot of these, but there are classes that can hunt down stealthers, just not with tracking.  Rangers get a flare that uncovers and ignites stealthers in an area.  Even without it, Kato was unstealthing people all day just by hearing their footsteps.  Instance switching is indeed pretty lame.

12 can seek out the other two at their whim, correct? so the 12 pairing with six/cavil are possible, but it's at 12's discretion (as I understand it).

As of right now I understand that balthar/six would not have paired cuz we'd have been notified, right? If that's the case then that leaves us with:

spec/spec

six/cavil
six/12
cavil/12

a cyclon who's got buy-in from a stupid person
or a cyclon who's latched onto a "decision maker" to let suspicion build on someone without outing themselves.

as I read it 12 can't talk to either of the other cylons until they try to kill him at night.  So the pairing would have to either assume they found 12 the first night instead of starbuck, or CR following remus' lead because CR (as 12) knows remus is a cylon even if remus doesn't know CR is.

I've been playing on the closed beta FFA server almost exclusively (almost level 30 now) but I just don't see the appeal.  Basically no thought is put into creating this mode, it's just a simple switch to turn PvP on in most areas.  If they design a game with FFA in mind then I am completely in favor of it (i.e. Shadowbane).  It's not the ganking that bothers me, I've had no problem dealing with it especially since stealth is the uber and I can even get away from level 80 characters.  Some say it adds to realism, is spawn camping that realistic?  I love PvP however so I'm hoping the standard server offers some good goal oriented PvP action.

other than where you spawn, what's really different about this and shadowbane?  both were ffa pvp.

spawn camping is a sad part of any ffa game and I wish they had some sort of timer of invuln.  They will probably add one eventually, but even as it is you can often stealth and get away.  All classes can stealth well enough to run away from a spawn.  you can also choose from multiple spawn points so you don't have to always spawn where it's camped.

Kato and I were never held back by spawn camping, never had a problem with doing a quest and had a great amount of extra fun watching over our shoulders while doing quests and while grinding.  Our time in the instance where nobody can sneak in and we didn't have to watch our backs (or couldn't sneak up on someone) was really boring, but good xp.

There is definitely the potential to be camped and ganked, and I would not recommend it for most people especially people who would have to solo.  (though I solo a lot, I'm a lot more masochistic than most slywink

I was just a bit surprised that people that loved SB didn't flock to it is all, the dynamics of xp'ing while keeping an eye out is very much the same and it's the first game in awhile that feels 'dangerous'.

I wish there was a stronger pvp death penalty though, as it is you lose nothing but time which means gankers don't risk much by trying.  Of course the other side of that coin means people that get ganked aren't really losing anything of value and when they die can just spawn somewhere else.

heh, looking at my own list

I wonder if we have

austin/proner  as six/baltar
remus/cr  as cavil/12

that would explain a hell of a lot to me.

Purge

(Geez guys if you had been on the ball we could have lynched Remus while he was away for the weekend...)

Throwaway comment meant to distract. Why are you voting for me? Nice work.

He hasn't responded yet. I then follow up commenting on Austin's accusation of CR saying it's plausible.

I get two baseless votes, it seems like partners trying to get people to buy in. I'm more suspicious of CR since you've at least provided an explanation, even if it didn't tie into me directly.

I'm concerned with all the pairings here though. I doubt we're going to see those specials come forward (like ravenvii's apparent specialist partner). It's too early in the game yet and people are going to keep their cards close to their chest.

The pairings greatly confuse me.  There should only be a couple possible pairings.  six/cavil  six/baltar specialist/specialist  and that's it until 12 is exposed in which case you have the 12/cavil 12/six options

We have way more pairing going on than is possible by class roles, especially if raven is assumed to be a specialist.

remus/cr
austin/proner

those are the two most prominent pairings and the only 'Good' pairing would be ravenvii and someone else.

I deduct that one of these two sets of two is six/cavil

Since Athena would not be able to pair up with someone through pm, and austin and proner seem very much on the same page even with little public talk, I'd have to reassert that I think proner is faking athena and proner/austin is six/cavil

heh, Austin has voted for me 3 times.  Seems to put an awful lot of faith in proners words.  ninja

I'm bored with this.  Will someone just let me know when you decide to shoot someone?

If you're bored, vote for Harkonis, and nab thyself a Cylon.

Here he goes once more with his 'I'm 100% sure' attitude.

Austin seems to back up proner everytime, but if proner was athena then they can't pm.

The only way I can see that proner can be so sure I'm what he wants gone AND austin can be sure is if they are the two cylons.

Remus, I do see what you're saying about raven now, and I agree that odds are high he's a specialist then.

I'll come right out and say it though, I'm just a citizen.  I have no data one way or the other, but obviously proner does.
