This is part of the problem.  Basically the EA servers are having to handshake with the MS servers constantly during the matches because of the reluctance of MS to allow completely hands-off (on their part) third party servers.  Eventually they'll get it sorted out, but it might take awhile since part of the delay will be politics and not just technical hurdles.  While it's an irritation, I understand MS's reluctance since XBOX-Live is their brand and if they allow EA complete freedom they basically lose control over something that in the end is still perceived as theirs.

The gist of it is that MS won't run servers for the game since it really only does peer-to-peer, but they don't allow EA's servers complete access since they aren't MS servers.  It's causing quite a headache and I'm not sure why it hasn't been cleared up before now since I don't think this is the first game with this issue (frontlines, though I remember it being laggy too, was that fixed?).

Loving the game, but having issues with idiots more and more both on my team and the other team.  Also my big complaint right now is the game does not feel as consistant as it did in beta, but that might be lag behind the scenes.  Sometimes I fire my gun and someone drops from full to zero health really fast, and sometimes they take a whole clip then turn and kill me in <1 second.  Same gun, same enemy, same health and I can get two different outcomes.  I either seem to kill people quicker than it feels I should, or it takes forever.  Never seems to be the middle.  It works both ways too.  I felt bad for this guy that got the jump on me and fired for a good .5-1 second before I turned and he died in one short burst from full health.  If they can improve the consistantly then the game will feel spot on imo.  I at least now feel like actually hitting people is more consistant even if the damage part isn't.  I do wonder if they have variable damage on some of the weapons instead of a flat amount at each range.  I know sniper rifles seem to always do the same, but I'm wondering if the lmg for example ALWAYS does 4 damage per bullet at max range, or is it more like 2-10.  Be interested in the answer.

Though work keeps telling me that I don't have any vacation time left (I took one week in Nov for CoD4 and my job offer states I get two weeks) I'm taking off next week for gaming goodness. 

Hoping to get some gaming in with you guys and especially with Kato before he's off to 'play' BF for real frown 

I'll understand if he doesn't want to play it though since he's going to have to deal with the unpleasantness of it all in reality though.

When I start up the creature creator and try to load the ones I made already, it shows that I have 5 creatures in the left tab, but there aren't any displayed.  It seems everytime I shut down and restart the program it loses my creatures but remembers how many more I made. frown

I also don't seem to be able to add the png's to the game by dragging and dropping as shown.

For me in order for pvp to be meaningful you need both a goal to fight for (which WAR should have with the realm war aspect and the way the keeps and control of zones works) and you have to have accountability.  In AoC there is absolutely zero accountability in pvp.  If you die, you lose nothing.  If I get jumped by someone and have an 'amazing' battle and barely win against insurmountable odds, so what, they'll be back in about 20-30 seconds (or the first guy I killed will be back and start fighting me again while I fight the second and third).  Then if they kill me, so what, I'll be back in 30 seconds or so and I'll start fighting again.  Fights in AoC can literally go on forever because there is nothing you're losing.  There's no incentive to fight, but there's also no incentive to not fight.  There's no reason to be cautious and this is leading to some people just standing there if you are fighting them, they don't fight back because you aren't costing them anything.  It also leads to people that just continually harass knowing they will lose but they are costing you time in dealing with them instead of what you were trying to do.  It's really the worst of allt he systems. 

AoC WAS touted as having good endgame siege pvp and it's right there on the box.  IT simply doesn't exist in the game.  In addition to all the other complaints, apparently once you get a battlekeep up and running, you can't attack another battlekeep.  You can only attack a battlekeep if you have the ability to have a battlekeep but don't have one.  This means that eventually all the big guilds will have battlekeeps and won't be able to fight each other.  Pretty retarded.  Once you build a keep you can only do defenses and only against lesser guilds that don't have keeps already. 

It's really just a shame, not only are things not near a retail state regarding the programming and patching, but they aren't even at a retail state in the design process and still don't even know how they want things to be.  They haven't thought the game out to the end yet.

Another misc bug that I thought was amusing in how bad it was:  Some guy rolled a 0 on a Need roll, the item was given to a guy in the group who rolled Greed and when a GM was contacted he said that's how it works because the Greed guy rolled higher. O_o

Ranged abilities will help you greatly.

Keep in mind that until they change some things, there's no point to pvp on any of the servers though.

Anyway, the blue one is my 'anatomically correct' one, though it has parts of both genders.  I was feeling bored so I went ahead and did the juvenile thing I'm sure millions will do on release.  His breasts and penis are actually spitter and when you use the spit attack he shoots from all three.  It's amazing at 4am how funny that is to watch slywink

Looking forward to having all the parts available, I really like the Hyder though, wish I didn't have to redo it when the game comes out.

That's right, some stuff is for solo, some for grouping, some maybe for raids, some for PvP.

Besides, you can start your combo on one mob and, if the mob dies in the middle, finish it on another (when you are fighting more than 1 mob at a time, which is most of the time). IIRC dealing with multiple mobs was one of the complaints assassins used to have.

I have to stealth to be able to really take them down well, and I still have to heal between battles.  I can't chain them together.  I suppose this means I'm still underpowered in the eyes of you two. Tongue

At least I do good damage now.

I swear, sometimes it feels like the two of you are receiving checks from Funcom, God knows they have the money to throw around.

well between my abilities properly stacking and what I'm guessing is the bonus to offhand attack chance from dex combined with the ability to use kidney strikes every battle (no cooldown now) and it stacking properly also I'm pretty overpowered in PvE for the first time.

Had a lockup right when an even level boss jumped me and he had me down to about 25% hp and I managed to kill him when the lockup stopped.

Still frustrates me in a way though, I have all of these awesome combos with great effects when they go off, but most mobs that I'm fighting don't live through the first 3 moves of the 4 move combos.

I have an ability to lower enemy damage, one to raise my damage on them, one to make them not heal as fast, plenty of ones with dots and some straight dps abilities.  What it comes down to is the faster the combo activates, that's the one to use because the mob will die when it goes off.  All the cool effects are completely wasted and it's a shame.


edit for CK:  MY assassin got some love just because I happen to have Kidney strikes and they took what was a 1 minute cooldown and it's zero now.  It basically doubles my damage every battle now.

I did notice however that I can no longer trigger ANY instant abilities during a combo.  I'm sure this was done to patch the 'exploit' that people were using where they were starting a combo and when one hit from finishing it they would use a charge ability.  This would allow them to rush up to someone, stun them and immediately pop all the damage of a combo finisher on the target.  Now if you choose an ability while doing a combo, it stops the combo and does the ability.

Agreed. I don't know if I'm necessarily a casual player (I have one char, a 42 barb, after 1 1/2 weeks) and while I've seen a few bugs and had some crashes (only in Old Tarantia though) I've probably had more fun with this game then any other MMO, with the exception of City of Heroes. I'm not focused on PvP right now so that probably helps, as well.

I think a large amount of my complaints are pvp related as well.  For a game that touted how revolutionary their pvp combat would be they didn't really put much thought into the pvp aspect.  I could probably ignore the bugs and shortcomings in pve better because when a mob beats you down in pve it doesn't talk shit slywink

I cancelled today.  too many bugs, game crashes on me every time I zone with the latest patch when it was fine before.  My class is ineffective against any non-cloth wearer that isn't more than 6 levels lower.  ( got frustrated and jumped a 40 barbarian with my 58 assassin and he got away pfft!)

I see great potential, and I did have fun for the first 40 levels or so, but the sheer quantity of problems finally bogged me down.  With another year the game could be pretty stellar as long as they add a harsher pvp death penalty

This is the third patch in a row that broke some important things while fixing others and changing still others without documenting them.

If I start my game I get two errors in the log that I have an invalid patcher key and one other error, and the memory leak is much much worse.  I'm still not convinced they test these patches before rolling them out or that they are testing them on systems running the same revisions as the live servers.  Take a gander through the tech support thread after this last patch and you'll see that it's not like a 'bad' patch on other mmorpg where most of the people complaining share a common vid card or cpu config that slipped through testing.  These are problems that slipped through and are affecting vast numbers of configurations.  It seems like they test it on one internal setup and then decide it's good to go if it loads ok.  That buff bug last patch was an example of something that could NOT have slipped by testing unless there was no testing to speak of.

For me it's not just the horrible communication, but it's also the way they are portraying themselves as inept programmers and tester who probably should not be working on a major release.  I couldn't do a better job (before someone tells me to slywink ) but the difference is that I realize this and am not working on a major release because of it.

Watching the game evolve from beta to now it's really just two steps forward and three back for me.

The game has great promise, great ideas, worst execution I've ever seen.  Thankfully I missed the AO launch.

Even solo, there is some really strange scaling going on.  Mobs 4 level higher than me are trivial but as soon as they are 5 levels higher they become impossible.  Similarly mobs 4 levels lower can't hit me at all.  They need to gradually scale difficulty instead of setting these apparently hardcoded limits.

this echoes some of my complaints as well.  Things go from too easy to impossible pretty quickly especially in a group.  If I try to hit something +5 I do 5-10 damage per hit, if I hit something my level it's 150 per hit, something -5 it's 500+ per hit.  That's a bit crazy and reminds me of DAOC before they fixed the purple issue.

I still see no reason at all to ever go into an epic dungeon. frown  They are too difficult (or too easy and just take too long) to be worth the time for the reward.  fighting the grey elites can take an eternity but the whole time they can't even outdamage my regen and I'm wearing cloth.

I guess I'll give it more time.  I thought I had a perfect opportunity with it when an enemy squad was clumped together for a defuse attempt, but it didn't seem to penetrate the ceiling and I didn't get a kill.

I'll play around with it some more tonight.  I think most of my time is going to be split between demo and support, with a little recon tossed in for fun.

Nothing penetrates ceilings, they did that on purpose.  What the mortar will do is take all the walls down allowing you to kill them with your gun.  You can also use it on the few crates that are in the open for decent damage.  It works from the side if you have already removed walls and place it off center.  It's basically the same as the big arty except for damage capacity and aiming.  The big arty can't shoot through ceilings either.

To bo honest I've always felt like I do decent damage when a target isn't running from me.  My only problems are that a barbarian, ranger and guardian can do more in a single shot/combo than I can with my most powerful ability combined with the inability to catch anyone who turns and runs.  Right now the only people that don't turn and run are barbarians, rangers and guardians, go figure slywink

My god the 'other' heli is just wicked.  I just played a round and went 26-0 in that beast.  With the other chopper, I can fly it more stable but can't kill without a gunner.  This one was just sick.

Not only did they not buff or fix any of the broken assassin stuff, but they now made it so you can evade an attack from behind which means we no longer get to backstab with impunity on a stationary target slywink

I love the way the US heli handles, but man those rockets suck.  I can do ok damage and distraction without a gunner but once I get a gunner we can turn the tide of the whole battle.  I just had a round with 24 minutes of flight time and we marched all the way to the final 2 crates before I lost a chopper.  was such a rush.

I've seen good results with one 4 man squad coordinating on a team of 'tards slywink

You can make a good push with 2 in the chopper and 2 on ground

On defense you can kick ass with 2 covering one crate and 2 either on the other crate or sweeping towards the enemy spawn.

Eventually the people who don't work well as a team will no longer be playing and the whole dynamic of the game will change.

I like how it in Battlefield: Bad Company where the assault class can have an auto-injector that heals a bit and the support class can heal others by providing medkits.  It's incentive to work as a team and in that aspect the healing works.  Solo games I wish were just designed so that you didn't get hurt as often.  It's always a turn off for me playing a game where I can get shot by 100's of bullets and shrug it off whether by ducking behind a wall for 30 seconds or picking up the magical med pack across the hall.

oh yeah.. I've spent the last few levels staring quizzically at the screen anytime one of those came up for a combo.  what's even worse is I had been using the 2,3,4 keys for the attacks, and now it's all being thrown off by being forced to use 1,2,3.

I use ~1234 for the five attacks.  since I was used to using 123 for the middle and didn't want to relearn it.  You can reprogram yours to however you want it on the key bindings menu.

Most of the skills work, they just have crap descriptions.

Run Speed is very useful even at 1% per 100 points imo.  Hang out with people who have it maxed and you'll notice a difference.

Recovery, fast recovery, bandaging, mana attracter and regen mana are all skills that only affect your regen rate while resting.  If you take all the points out of them and rest then put the points into them and rest you'll see the difference immediately.

COD4 was very fast paced and fast paced games don't really have a need for cover systems.  What a cover system does is slow down the pace and turn the game into more of a stop, think and shoot.  COD4 was so fast that there was no time for more cover than you could already get by crouching and moving slowly.

BF:BC is also fast paced AND has destructable terrain.  In both of these games there's not much a cover system would even add other than more buttons to manage.

R6 had a good cover system and it works well, but R6 is also a slower paced game with an emphasis on taking your time and getting into position without exposing yourself.  In Cod4 you should be sprinting if you are ever out in the open and behind something otherwise.  You can take cover without a cover system slywink

the rockets are a bitch.  Basically when I fly the chopper with the rockets my gunner gets 15-20 kills and I just fly.  When I fly the chopper with the minigum I get 15-20 kills and my gunner gets about 5. slywink 

With a good gunner (Jarrod is A #1 when it comes to this btw) I have been able to completely clean house and we've gone from the first base (as attackers) to the end with the heli accounting for about 50% of crate destruction and 100% of mayhem slywink

I disagree strongly.  COD4 obsolete?  Not sure how you can say that after playing it.  A well done cover system can add greatly to a game, but a poorly done one can kill a game.  I'd rather have a game without on than a game with a poorly implemented one anyday and I don't think we've hit the point yet where a cover system is a done deal.

What good would a cover system do in BF:BC anyway?  You take cover behind something and it'd be gone in about .5 seconds.
