I think I finally got the controls for the helicopter down.  Couldn't hit anything with the rockets though...got maybe 3 kills.  Was able to succesfully bail out and get right on the crate though.

My most recent match was a 455 pt slaughter with me scoring 21pts per minute.  Went 28/16.

Have I mentioned I love this game ?   crybaby

the rockets are a bitch.  Basically when I fly the chopper with the rockets my gunner gets 15-20 kills and I just fly.  When I fly the chopper with the minigum I get 15-20 kills and my gunner gets about 5. slywink

With a good gunner (Jarrod is A #1 when it comes to this btw) I have been able to completely clean house and we've gone from the first base (as attackers) to the end with the heli accounting for about 50% of crate destruction and 100% of mayhem slywink

I hate to keep saying it, but the lack of a cover mechanism in FPS games makes games without them obsolete.

I disagree strongly.  COD4 obsolete?  Not sure how you can say that after playing it.  A well done cover system can add greatly to a game, but a poorly done one can kill a game.  I'd rather have a game without on than a game with a poorly implemented one anyday and I don't think we've hit the point yet where a cover system is a done deal.

What good would a cover system do in BF:BC anyway?  You take cover behind something and it'd be gone in about .5 seconds.

PS. This is my GOTY already. Just based on the demo. Yes. It's that good.

What would be nice though is if we could fill a room with squads. Appears you can only invite people for a squad of 4.  Any others either go into a different squad or get zorked over the other team.

PS. GOTY!

My biggest problem with the game right now is that it seems like it will be impossible to coordinate more than 4 people in a game.  If we could figure out a way to get 2 squads in games together on the same team we could just use a vent server for communications.

I also have a complaint about the sniper rifles.  The default sniper rifle doesn't quite kill in one shot unless you head shot.  This would be fine if it didn't take 2-3 full seconds to chamber a second round.  Then I spent an unlock token on the higher damage sniper rifle.  While it did in fact do more damage, it still takes 2 shots and it loads even slower.  Not a whole lot of point to that upgrade imo.  I should have gone the other route and grabbed the faster shooting silenced one.

Was it the M95 you unlocked and didn't like?

Yes, not enough of an upgrade to warrant an unlock token imo.

Game played great with the limited access preorders

Now that there is no limit on how many people can play I think EA's servers are fubar.  Same thing that happened with Burnout Paradise on release of both the demo and full game.  Hopefully they don't repeat and make us wait a week or two for stable gaming.
8407  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Anyone else playing the BF:BC Demo? on: June 04, 2008, 01:55:54 PM
At least this time you have to land the heli to repair it slywink

Had a 23 kill 14 minute streak in the heli with Jarrod last night, was very fun.  If the other team hasn't figured out how easy it is to shoot me down, it's a bit of a slaughter.

Now I just wish I could reset my unlocks since I screwed them up.  I have to wait until the release to use the guns I wanted.
8408  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Anyone else playing the BF:BC Demo? on: June 03, 2008, 05:43:44 PM
Though I understand how you would want the ease of throwing grenades like in COD4, I would like to see you try to throw a grenade without putting your gun away in real life slywink

That 'uber' weapon you refer to is the laser designator.  It's the unlock for the recon class (sniper).  You paint a vehicle or turret target for a few seconds and it calls in the airstrike and then you guide the missile into the target.  If you think it's uber I suggest you try it out, it's far from it.  Very hard to aim and very very limited blast radius so you have to aim well.  In beta it was extremely good, now it's just good.

Usually the first thing I do as far as unlocks go is to unlock the anti-vehicle option for each class.  (assault doesn't have one, but they start with the grenade launcher which is ok at it.)

I'm definitely a BF-series fanboy, although this was the first BF I'd played on a console.  The beta was a lot of fun; I played enough to get all the unlocks, mostly enjoying Oasis.
I did have some complaints, and I really hope they've been addressed since the beta.
#1: Gaydar!  OK, UAV's (which show the position of enemy soldiers, typically for a brief period) have been in these kind of games for a while now, and I understand the basic purpose of shortening the 'search' part of 'search-and-destroy', but this implementation is just too damn much.  Basically, a member of the opposing team 'looks' at you by placing the crosshair on you, and the game automatically 'spots' you (not a keypress like the PC BFs, but it had some flakiness in that it wouldn't consistently trigger).  Once spotted, your position is known to the entire enemy team.  Pretty standard, right?  Wait, not only does the enemy see you on their map or mini-map, IT PUTS A FRIGGING DOT ON YOUR LOCATION ON THE MAIN VIEWSCREEN.  Well, OK, some people don't understand maps, I get that.  Wait, IT ALSO UPDATES THIS INFORMATION IN REAL-TIME.  Well, maybe that helps people who nee- FOR LIKE 8 TO 10 FREAKING SECONDS!  Combine this mechanism with destructible walls, and I spent a lot of time madly running away from combat while an enemy Bradley destroyed every wall between me and him, then turning around and heading back when I thought my 'signature' had worn off.  Now, in my day, we used to call this kind of thing a 'wall hack', and it was generally reviled.  Now it's cool?  No.  It's still not cool.  Actually, there's too much of this onscreen information in general.  It doesn't really help me to see dots for every friendly within 10 miles, indeed it hurts if an enemy gets between us resulting in a slow threat identification.  I don't like that the crates have a 'shoot here' triangle for enemy boats or tanks to sit back and shell.  Will there be a hardcore mode without this egregious level of hand-holding?  Suck it up, noobs, read a friggin' objective description now and then why don't ya?
#2: Squad/team management.  I understand that in this context, the developers are smart to limit team-changing, but I've been on both sides of some severely unbalanced matches and there was nothing much to do about it except leave.  Is there some kind of autobalance now?  I seem to recall that it wouldn't even consistently add new players to the shorthanded team.  The squad system had the same problem of manageability.  I never figured out how to start a new squad or join a different squad (e.g. your only other squadmate just wants to practice his 'nap-in-the-earth' helo flying).  Am I hearing there is some kind of party system that will let me squad with Friends?  Anything new on that front?

These were the big ones.  I also wasn't crazy about some of the class decisions they made, but this is de rigeur with non-homogenous shooters.  For example, usually there's not much reason to be anything other than sniper.  Support is mostly useless, IMO.  The Anti-Tank weapon is really not much use against tanks, even square in the rear.  Of course, there may be other environments in the full game where these other classes come into their own.

What's the final disposition of the unlocks?  Initially, the 'buy-only' unlocks at the top were to be sold on Marketplace, or included in the Gold Edition.  I thought I'd heard that EA had decided to include these with the regular product, as the 'pay for advantage' aspect raised something of a stink.  Like Hark said, the 'non-buy' unlocks are mostly minor differences.  I think the main advantage to them is not having to rely on the weapons a particular army offers you for your bread-and-butter class; ie you can always use your unlock and get intimate with it.

Finally, I'll probably get the damn thing anyway.  I didn't really get into COD4 MP, but I look forward to fragging with some of you FPSers.  Look for MooseFoe (also for GTAIV now).

PS: Hi.

The 'gaydar' as you call it is no different than the system in BF2 where you could mark your target and it would show up on everyone's radar/hud.  The only small difference is that instead of pulling up a menu and selecting what the target is, it automatically calls out what it is.  You ONLY show up on radar if someone has spotted you and kept you in the center of their vision for more than about 1.5-2 seconds.  It's really not that hard to avoid if that's your game plan.  I like the dots because not only does it make it much easier to shoot the noobs, but when you get good at not being a dot, peopel assume you aren't there and it's much easier to kick their ass unseen slywink

If the crates weren't marked as such, the 50% of players that actually do try to attack or defend objectives wouldn't. slywink  Most but not all crates are in positions that boats, tanks and helis can't take them out easily anyway.  There's usually one every couple waypoints that is accessible to tanks.  If you let a tank kill the crate you deserve it anyway since it takes about a dozen rounds and no tank should live that long.

Regarding the auto-balance, it seems like it was in the beta, but not the demo.  Hopefully with full servers it won't be an issue but I agree that this could be a problem if they don't bring it back.

There are 5 weapons you can unlock prior to the games release btw.  If you're planning on playing it's worth looking into it at the game's official site.  One is for preordering, one for signing up for the newsletter, one for ranking to max in the demo, don't recall where the other two are.

I need a weapon unlocking 101 rundown.  Do I have this right?

Five, and only five, weapons you can unlock prior to release?
Only one of which is from preordering?  (which one?)
Every other weapon unlocked through the game proper, but the aforementioned five you won't get until you hit the level cap?

http://badcompany.ea.com/page/dynpid/8616/

there's the info on how to get each of the five weapons.

One is for pre-ordering and you get the code when you pre-order.
One is for signing up for their newsletter and you get the code when you do.
One is for hitting max rank in the demo and you get the code when you do.
One is for hitting 'veteran' status in the full retail game.
One is for checking your stats on their stats page after release.

The stats are like the PC version of BF2 btw, it's pretty similar to what H3 did.

If you stop by the assassin forums you can see all the posts of people who are level 80 and have put their assassins away.  There's also the rather amusing part that people are switching from the assassin to other classes and then going 'omg, this is so easy!' and levelling up to 40-50 in 2 days instead of 2 weeks.  It was quite a shock to myself, I know that.

Lolz. Can't wait to play with you.  What's neat is that my ineptness at this game gives me some small sense of the crushing lack of skills you have in COD4 and makes me realize what strong character you're building every time you turn on your 360.

Maybe now with my newly learned shooter skillz (COD4 is the first online shooter I've played) I can start off on a better foot with BF.  Although more likely I will be getting gunned down by helicopter fire, stepping on mines and getting rolled over by tanks in no time.

Even if you're not much of a shot, there are plenty of ways to be helpful to the team in BF.  If nothing else pick support and follow me dropping medkits slywink  Just stay down so they don't shoot me trying to get ya.

So I got in about 2 hrs last night and while there are several things that require adjustment, this game is quite awesome. Most of my complaints are of a n00bian slant and I'm sure all of them will be cleared up when I get a manual (hopefully)...

Pros:

-Map Size/Environments
-Weapon/Vehicle variety
-Sound (omg the sound!)
-Size of Skirmishes (8 on Cool
-Vehicles  They're just neat

Cons:
-Complex. I can't tell what the heck is going on a lot of the time.  For example, I unlocked meds for MP, but they only show up in one kit. Huh?
-Unlock Screen- It shows a picture of the weapon, but doesn't really tell you what it does. For example, there was this round thing with a number designation. I eventually realized it was an Anti-Tank mine.  A bit better explanation on the unlocks would be nice...oh and to what kits they go to
-Squad communication- For whatever reason you can only communicate with guys on your squad...and in many cases, though it seems like we have 8 people on a team, I am only in a squad with 1 other guy.  I don't know if that's cause of when we joined or what...
-Aiming- It seems more genuine, but COD4's aiming system is SO tight, that anything seems to pail.  On the flipside, it's more realistic IMO as you don't actually zoom in like you do on COD4 aiming
-Hit indicator- I can't usually tell that I'm hitting someone.  Also, it really does take a lot of rounds (shaddup Hark!) to take someone down.

I  was also underwhelmed by the SP demo.  The MP, however, has been really really neat. I look forward to many GT nights of taking on the world.

You are right in that most of your complaints are noobish slywink  I'll go easy on ya though.

There is a hit indicator, it's a red semi-circle that pops up.  If you look for it, it's hard to miss so I'm not sure what your complaint  there is.  On the unlock screen the unlocks are in columns and each column is a kit. slywink  Not too hard to figure that out imo.

Squad communications is a key point and you are correct.  I think they do this so you can coordinate with squad mates without having to 'talk over' the rest of your team.  Considering all the squad level bonuses you get combined with the spawn on squad option I think it'll work out pretty well in the long run.

If you unlocked the med kit, then it was in the first column which is assault.

The demo does need a manual, but you can actually find all about the game including how to play at the official website.  Most of your questions would be answered there.  I still stand by my statement that it really doesn't take much to kill someone, if you find it does then you are probably shooting from beyond your weapons effective range.

Conquerors suck! If they don't make me awesome, I quit!  smoke

Anyone who thinks they can have this many classes and please everyone all of the time is smoking something funny and not sharing with the rest of us.  stirthepot icon_lol My Conqueror drops like a load of bricks and I'm just not yet at the point of knowing whether the AT type is borked, my points are all poorly distributed, I just suck, or some combination thereof.  icon_razz

I don't begrudge people on the official forums screaming bloody murder about their respective ATs, but when has any mmorpg launch not brought about the same complaints? For that matter, MMOs that have been out 5 years still have people complaining about class-balancing. If they had Diablo's original 3 classes (a melee character, a bow character and a mage), then balancing would be easy. I'm just convinced the price devs and players play for flexibility and a wide range of types is a balancing situation that's pretty much impossible to ever resolve to everyone's satisfaction, esp. trying to accommodate PvE and PvP styles at the same time.

Anyway. Conquerors suck! I quit!  icon_lol

BJ, there is a huge difference between wanting to be better, and wanting to be viable in the slightest.  Demos, Necros, Conqs and Bear Shaman are all classes that are a bit lacking and probably need more balance.  This is to be expected.

Assassins and HoX are completely broken and not functioning well enough to play the game.  I could go through the huge list of problems, but you obviously don't give a shit and just think people whine because they aren't overpowered.  The quick list is that the manual says Assassins do the most damage, yet a ranger of the same level shooting the same mob does 2x my sneak attack from 20m away while not stealthed.  That's broken.  I'm wearing cloth and have massive amounts of dex, yet a guardian in full plate has 3x the evade chance that I do.  That ain't right.

The final step was when a guardian 4 levels lower than me beat me in pvp by not using ANY combos or abilities after I got the jump on her.  I did a sneak attack, opened up with my biggest combo and got her to 50%.  From there she backed up, pulled out a polearm and ran circles around me swinging normal swings and as a dagger user with no snares, knockdowns, stuns, charges, lunges, etc, I never even hit her again.   If I get a sneak attack off on a mage class and catch them completely unaware, I MIGHT win.  If any class tries to go toe to toe and just stands there, I MIGHT win.  But the sad truth is that the way combat is set up right now, if you either just run away or run in circles, you will beat any assassin that doesn't kill you in one shot.

I've been on the 'gimp' side of classes before and sometimes for many years.  I played a hunter in DAOC and except for the first 2 weeks they were pretty useless in both PvE and PvP until the revamp 2 years later but I stuck with it.  They were not however completely 100% incapable of winning any fight vs someone who knows how to move.

I tend to gravitate towards classes people think are bad just to prove them wrong.  I do the same with builds. There just isnt' anything to work with here.  Squishy armor + no range + no CC = pointless class.  Sadly they will probably 'fix' it by just making the sneak attack do more and then we'll truly be one shot wonders. frown

I played last night and there definitely is a learning curve.

I didn't get much time in cause I tuned in to the MMA primtime special.

It was hard to get my bearings and I didn't like that it takes a ton of rounds to kill a guy.  However, I loved the scale of the maps and the vehicles- though it is a sea change from the smaller more intimate maps of COD4.

Hopefully I'll get to play some more tonight.

I've preordered the gold edition and from what I see so far, Ii has the potential to be a time sink on the scale of COD 4.  I'm definitely in.

So far I haven't had any problems with lethality, seems to take just a couple more than COD4 for me.  You may be missing slywink

It's like a combination of the older BF games, and Frontlines imo.

Good balance between classes, vehicles are useful and powerful, but have counters that are very effective.

So far I'm very stoked.  Most of my complaints from the beta were fixed.  Hit detection seems pretty spot on, though not quite as visceral as COD4.  While the overall controls are a bit less responsive and intuitive than COD4, it's still very responsive and you can switch to any weapon or gadget remarkably fast.  There is now an input buffer so for example if you have the healing syringe you can switch to it, inject yourself and back to gun in mere seconds.  You can reload while sprinting.  Everything just feels good to me.  Only negatives I have so far are that as can be expected your average pick-up team is pretty lame and doesn't even attempt to attack or defend the targets.

There's a lot to learn in the game and it's a fairly steep curve.  I can see it being very frustrating to those that don't catch on to games quite as quickly.  If you stick with it though I think the game has a ton of potential especially for team work.

I also love knifing someone and it keeps track of it and you keep their dogtags for good slywink

What does a Totem of the Origins do?

Is is some sort of unique scratch off code in the magazine?

I thought the Totem was a town portal type of spell, usable once every hour or so. But you get one with every character you create for free anyway (Path of Asura), so I'm not quite sure why that's a giveaway item like that.

And yes, it's a unique code that's printed in every magazine. I think you enter it into your account just you entered in your CD key, and then you can /claim it on one character.

It lets you warp to your home town once every 24 hours.  The reason it's a big deal is it lets you cross the entire map for no time investment once a day.  Most people once they get levelling will set their warp point out to where they are levelling up so they can get there quickly.  Sometimes you still need to get back to 'civilization' and it can take 30 minutes to an hour to do it.  This lets you just warp to town, then use your normal warp back to xp.  Worth having for as little as the mag costs for me.

EduardoX, how is it silly to give people who have already paid for it an extra week before people who didn't? Seems silly to think it's silly.

Because it's just a demo, and not the full game. A demo is a marketing tool to reach those unsold on it, not those that have already paid for what the demo is intended to sell. It's their game and they can do what they want, but I agree with EddieX, it does seem a bit silly.

And the demo will be available to everyone so it still serves as that marketing tool.  There are other bonuses of preordering as well, not the least of which is that you have more time to max your rank in the demo which unlocks a gun for the full game.

Yeah, if anyone else can get ahold of the PC Gamer code, I'll pay for the magazine to get one smile

Can't get them near me and I'd really like the item since it'll save some time.

Got it.  Can we play with friends in this demo as opposed to the beta?

Oh yeah... I love destructible terrain, so nice to be in a tank and able to run THROUGH a wooden fence instead of being hung up on it or stopped... also blowing up trees... houses... small mammals...

Liking the sound, would probably be better if I had something besides just the TV speakers hooked up right now.

Yeah, the party system is now active.

I have a healing ability that is on a 2 minute timer, it's pretty nice slywink  I popped that plus my 30% dodge bonus and a healing pot all at the same time which amounts to a large positive in my hp smile

Interesting, of course it is also odd that he didn't use the stun or knockdown on you, that could have been a difference maker, unless he tried and missed.

He stunned me right off the bat.  I have an anti-knockdown that I triggered at the beginning and it absorbed his knockdown as well.

We've got about 12 people playing on Cimmeria.

The main key is to not go to White Sands or the Underhalls slywink

You can easily get to 19 and out of Tortage by doing your night quests and exploring the Ruins (which are not pvp enabled).  You'll find far more idiots ganking in Tortage pvp areas than in the rest of the game combined simply because it's easy to make a new character, level it to 20 or so and be an ass with little to no accountability.  Most of the real jerks don't bother levelling up past 22 or so and you'll see the quality of play increase drastically post-tortage.  I've died in pvp 10 times in 50 levels and half of those were in tortage.

It also helps that we're on an RP-PVP server because the community really does do a good job of policing things.  People that gank are often put on server wide KOS lists that mean they don't get to do anything without being ganked themselves and it keeps most people in line.

really the whole key to enjoying playing on a pvp server is to know when to move.  Someone bothering you?  switch instances or at the least switch where you're respawning.  Learn what areas are 'hot' and do you best to avoid them except during off hours.  You can't try normal questing in the war zones and expect to not get jumped, it just won't happen.

I'll also add that key to levelling ANY melee class is positioning.  Make sure when you get that add that you are hitting both mobs at the same time with each hit and combo.  If the add is a caster/archer then either pull it closer then melee it, or run up to it dragging the other mobs.  If you can get mobs lined up you can take down far more than you might think.  Use your poisons and dots to your advantage too especially when you can't line mobs up properly.  If you unload the tier 3 and tier 2 poison combos on a mob, you may be able to then turn and ignore it because it'll be dead in 3 seconds of both poisons ticking.

I'm at the point now that my poisons ticking actually do about even dps to my actual strikes.
