Apparently once you max out your rank the form stat changes to a skill rating between 1-50 with lower being better.  Only one person can be Skill level 1.

I'm at 16 right now, trying to lower it but it doesn't want to budge.

Wonderpug is 17, so close.

JarrodHK sittin in the mid at 28.

I'll say the coolest old school arcade game I'd pick would probably be Tempest.  The sounds combined with the ease of gameplay really sucked a lot of hours out of my life.  It's hard to pick a single one though, most of the truly old school games had an almost zen like combo of simplicity and depth that seems lost on the newer games.

Coolest new game is probably COD4 because it is the complete package.  First game in a very long time where the controls really felt intuitive and within 10 minutes I didn't have to think while playing (which is something that the old school games did so well).

Yeah- even in the demo half the team would snipe and most of them would suck at it.

What's the worst is when you die, then spawn on squad and the guy is out in the middle of nowhere with barely any sight lines yet he sits there the whole time doing nothing.

Playing with friends is gonna be where itzzat.

Generally speaking, NEVER spawn on a sniper.  I rarely do and I rarely get stuck out in the boonies (or spawn on the missile they can call in, that has never happened to me).

Yeah, the whole squad communication/team lobby thing is what kills this for me. I don't understand why getting a team of people locked in and playing is so hard for developers to handle. Halo 3 did it with it's "couch" model and COD4 does it fine.. why is it so hard to get right?

I don't know about hte matchmaking issues, but I suspect that the reason you can't ocmmunicate across squads is because of bandwidth. It seems that there is far more oging on with BF:BC than ever happened in COD4 (vehicles, all those munitions to track, damage to talley etc) that perhaps being able to 12 people chatting to one another on both sides was too much.

As for controls, I spent days playing COD4 and it was a minor adjustment but now the controls in BF are easy.

As for helicopters- it takes a bit of time, but it's pretty easy once you get the hang of it.  The apache is easy to fly. That other copter on Oasis I found very hard to fly and still do.

I cannot wait to play this this weekend.

XBOX Live voice communications don't use the same 'pipes' that the game uses.  Microsoft servers are hosting the voice chat, EA's the game data.  They could have done it.

sadly no.  It seems random at the end of rounds.  I once had a 4 member squad where 3 of us were on one team with Teggy on the other.  We stuck it out and at the start of the next round it was the three of them on the other team and me on my own.

I like that you give a blurb of BF history at the top.  Having been such a fan of the PC incarnations it's disconcerting to see so many console people who've never touched the series.

I think your section on the controls is a little unfair.  You praise CoD4's controls and then hit BF:BC for not having crouch on L3.  Both games have sprint on L3.  As far as the mapping for crouching and melee, I could've sworn there was a control option that put melee on R3 but I'm probably thinking of another game.

Not that I want to see this game rated any lower, but one knock I read from another forum's impressions is that you don't get achievements tied lower difficulties when completing the higher difficulties.  I couldn't care less about them, but it sounds like it'd be a real pain in the ass oversight for the people that do play the achievement game.

Another downside is the horrible system they currently have set up for meeting up with friends.  If there's four of you that want to play together, great.  You're all set.  But if you have a bigger group you pretty much just have to roll the dice if you're hoping to end up on the same team on a server.  Also, if you use the 'join a friend' XBL feature you can't choose to join up in the same squad unless you quit out of the map and rejoin a server together.  Ridiculously cumbersome, and I have to think that they'll end up patching in a better system.

As annoying as those downsides might be, in my case at least they've been almost completely drowned out by the huge amount of fun I've had in the demo and in my first night with the full version.

I'll add that even if you are trying to play with only 3 friends, you often don't end up on the same squad or even team. frown

regarding sprinting, I'm pretty sure that you don't have to keep holding sprint while running, I've been holding it the first few seconds then just keep sprinting until I stop moving.

Why do they keep releasing stuff from obscure bands nobody has heard of?  Now the rumor mill is saying that one of the groups that might end up in the game is some British band that I guess was pretty popular in the 60s...

The Beatles may be coming to Rock Band (or Guitar Hero).

From the Financial Times:

Quote
Beatles representatives are in talks with two companies to create a Beatles-themed video game in a move that could pave the way for a broader licensing of the Fab Four’s catalogue.

The representatives have held discussions with both Activision and MTV Games, the respective makers of the Guitar Hero and Rock Band games, in which players strum along to favourite songs or form virtual bands.

A final deal would be worth several million dollars, according to a person familiar with the talks, and could be reached in a matter of weeks. However, it would have first to win the blessing of both Apple Corps, the company established by the band to oversee its business interests, and EMI, the UK music group that owns the Beatles master recordings. Both declined to comment.

The surviving Beatles and their heirs have been cautious about exploiting their material on new platforms. They were slow to re-issue their albums on compact disc.

In spite of repeated discussions, EMI and Apple Corps have yet to license Beatles recordings for digital use, including for sale through Apple’s iTunes music store.

Apple Corps has become more active in recent months since Jeff Jones took over as chief executive.

The company, whose board includes Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Olivia Harrison and Yoko Ono Lennon, has allowed Beatles compositions to be used on American Idol and in a Las Vegas show.

Martin Bandier, chief executive of Sony/ATV Music Publishing, which controls more than 200 Beatles copyrights, said the exposure on American Idol had yielded a number of inquiries, including from mobile phone carriers.

“To my view, it’s only a matter of time before we see Beatles songs that are the original recordings in motion pictures, in television work, and yes, maybe even one day in a commercial,” said Mr Bandier, arguing that sensitivities about commercialism should be balanced against the merits of exposing the band to a younger generation.

The Beatles could help sway a battle between Activision and Electronic Arts, the biggest US video game publishers. Activision has generated more than $1bn so far from Guitar Hero as sales approach 20m units.

EA, in partnership with MTV, introduced Rock Band in November. Thanks to added functionality, the game has sold more than 3m copies.

An Activision spokesman declined to comment on whether it was competing for Beatles rights. MTV said: “We are talking to virtually every major rock artist all the time about ways we might get them involved in Rock Band.”

Ron, I agree with a large part of your review, but definitely not with your crouching mention.  In COD4 (which you mention nails the controls) sprint is on the L3 which it is in BF:BC as well, yet you say it's not natural for crouch to not be on the L3.  For the record I prefer crouch on R3 instead of A which is where it is in COD4.  In some ways the controls of BF:BC are better than COD4, in others they are lacking.  I think the responsiveness of controls (partially courtesy of the guaranteed 60 fps) in COD4 is what puts it over the top and not really the layout.  Just imo obviously slywink

You'll have to jump into some games with us.  As usual in any game that requires teamwork, playing with random people can be an exercise in frustration though.

edit: I had missed the comment on the flight controls.  I've had no problems with flying in the game and have put several hours of flight time in.  It took me about 30 minutes total flight time to get comfortable, but after that it's pretty smooth.  Not quite as intuitive and GTA's heli controls, but very serviceable.

Having a blast overall though I was a bit bitchy last night slywink

Two things bothering me are the way damage seems inconsistant and it's really irritating how so few people play together as a team.  3 games in a row we got steamrolled with half our team at the wrong bases and stuff on both attacking and defense.

On a side note, while watching one of the latest videos for Left4Dead I couldn't help but get frustrated and laugh at the same time when the dude playing for the video turns and looks at the other player who's getting raped by zombies and is flashing with a bunch of icons that are saying 'help this player and remove the zombies from them' then he just turns back to the other directionn and keeps shooting.  A giant red exclamation point with an arrow is on his display trying to get him to go help the player out and at one point he turns to follow the arrow again and once more you see the other player highlighted and giant white letter telling him to remove the zombies from the other player... he just turns back around yet again and keeps shooting and they both die.  What an f'n genius.  Just proves that no matter how foolproof you try to make a system to get people to work as a team, some people are too retarded to do it slywink

1. There is an achievement for using a parachute - I thought there were not parachutes in the game?

They're not in the multiplayer, but as a guess perhaps there's a part in the SP storyline involving a parachute.

The achievement says "(Online) Glide in the parachute for 3 seconds".

A bit of a bummer - they finally revealed what you need to do to get free weapon #4 - you have to have played a previous Battlefield game, which I have not. It is an assault rifle, which is not too big of a deal, as I expect to spend most of my time as Support and Demolitions. The developers have also hinted that they will likely free up all the find-all-five weapons somewhere down the line.

I believe it's called Darwin's Parachute because there is no parachute.  They want you to freefall to your death from high enough for 3 seconds of hang time.

Oh, and there is no street date for this title so nobody broke anything (combined with the fact that the release date is the 23rd anyway)

Smartasses - I wonder if the laser designator bug still exists in the retail copy.  You, know, the one were you can spawn on someone's bomb as it's falling from the sky?  Could get that achievement no problem smile

My bad on the release date -  I thought it was tomorrow.  Does that mean Gamestop should have it today?  I haven't gotten a call.

chances are good that most of them won't have it until tomorrow, but I'd call around.  Usually they can get it in today if the manager goes and picks up the shipment.

Complete Noob question here.  Ok, I just tried out the 360 SP demo.  Not bad, but when I clicked on multiplayer, it says I have to register for EA account.  When I played COD4 on Live, no such thing was necessary.  So, what's all this then (the EA account thingy)?

I have no recollection of that at all when I tried it.  I don't think you need an EA account to play the demo, but it's probably so that you can track your stats maybe? I dunno.

You need an EA account to play any EA game on live, if you've ever played any of them, at some point you filled out the account and it remembers you.  Basically it involves you saying it's ok for EA to have access to all the info about you that MS has. frown

I'm a bit late to the party, but I'd like to pipe in on the solo'ing group stuff bit.  Kato had no problem solo'ing several of the epic instances one he was just a few levels past them with his Guardian.  Not sure how much that has changed since the lowering of damage on Overreach though.

I prefer to solo in most games, but I love to play with other people in the world.  I don't like the forced group mechanics of healer/tank/dps used in most mmorpgs.  It encourages cliques and snobbery imo.  Just like some people can't understand why I would enjoy playing 'by myself' in a game full of other people, I can't understand why people can't have fun unless they are beating stuff up with other people.  They are both social extremes.  While I enjoy grouping on occasions, when you group you tend to spend a fair amount of your time waiting on people to get together, organizing where you're going, recovering from a wipe, waiting again on someone to get back from doing a chore for their wife/kid, etc.  I don't pay a monthly fee to wait on other people and that's what it tends to boil down to.  Raids just take it to a whole different extreme and that's something I'll never be into.

Also you forgot to mention that you can stick you entire C4 load on a crate and detonate for a CRAPTON of damage.

I usually do that followed by aggressive knifing of the crate for the win slywink
