I hate when I'm unemployed, and I hate having friends unemployed, but I also don't have sympathy for companies that make stupid decisions.  There comes a time when they need to pay the price.  I've left companies before when I saw where they were heading and got out before they closed down.

Saving people's jobs should never be a reason to bail out a poorly run company.  Don't promote incompetence.

edit: oh, meant to comment that I don't normally visit R&P but seeing that Ron posted (nay, STARTED a thread) got my curiosity up. slywink

Reviews are embargoed until noon today.

Wow that just reeks of our game sucks.

Seriously. I hate when publishers do this. What do the have to hide?

FWIW, Fallout 3 was similar- reviews were embargoed until the day of release.  And we all know what a shoddy piece of crap that turned out to be.... paranoid

I'll be running games pretty much all day every day for the next week, then nightly for awhile after that.

I try to keep the lobby at friends only which means you can join without an invite if we're in the lobby, otherwise just msg me and we can back out to the lobby to pick ya up with a Ramalama.

In this version of CoD I definitely prefer Hardcore, but we can mix it up so non-hardcore players can play as well.  Most of the drawbacks of HC in CoD4 seem absent here.

well first of all, you're supposed to play MP because it's fun... the rewards are bonus.  Get your WAR grinding attitude out of here Forge!

Secondly, supposedly you earn MP unlock xp during the single player and coop campaigns as well so it shouldn't be a huge problem.

I'm just excited that now flipping over into prestige mode provides tangible benefits.

Quick MP impressions:

Game is more of the same from COD4.  If you've played the beta, you know what to expect.  One especially neat new map is in a bombed out asylum: lots of tight corridors with some open spaces to boot.

Downside: Only MP game modes available before level 14 are Free For All and Team Deathmatch.  Hardcore is not available until level 18.

WTF? I know it can be fast and easy to level up but what is the reason behind this?

Isn't that how CoD4 was as well?  I could have sworn you had to rank up to play hardcore there too.  Kinda surprised their new gamemode (WAR) isn't available at the start though.

Even though I know there will be a great deal of COD5 MP action going on, I just can't stomach another game purchase.  I've played all of one level in Force Unleashed and then got back into Mass Effect, which has been sitting on my shelf since last Christmas.  I had zero interest in Fallout 3 until I made the mistake of reading reviews and the buzz around GamingTrend and wound up picking it up on release day.  I've played for about two or three hours and absolutely love the game, but then the next new hotness came out.  I wasn't at all planning on picking up Gears 2 as I have enough to keep me occupied as it is, but online MP in the original Gears was one of my favorite experiences and I just couldn't skip out on the sequel, so I added Gears 2 to my backlog as well and played 6+ hours of glorious MP on Friday night.

Fable 2 has had to go on my Christmas list as I just don't have any time to play it but certainly can't pass it up completely, and Mirror's Edge will be added to my list as well.  Perhaps I can also add COD5 so that while I need to focus on Gears 2 MP in order to feel like the purchase was justified, I can hold off on COD5 until after the holidays and still get to experience it without feeling like I've pissed so much money away on growing an already ridiculous backlog.

Pete, you should just do what I did and stop buying single player games at all.  When time and money are at a premium, you can save a lot of money by only playing a couple games and multiplayer games tend to stay interesting and the social aspect can keep you from being drawn to other games.  I went almost the entire year without buying any single player games then for some reason I freaked out and bought Fable II (pretty much SP), Fallout 3 and Saint's Row 2 (though it has coop, it isn't really mp in the way I mean).

I expect my MP purchases to last me the next 6 months or more with CoD5, L4D and MKvsDCU  3 games for 6 months plus my Rock Band purchases will just about do it.

To stay on topic though, I have CoD5 this week and am fighting the temptation of Mirror's Edge (another SP damnit! )

I hate the bipod attachment.  I seem less accurate when mounted, my movement is limited, and I'm unable to accurately control my bursts since it seems to fire a minimum burst length regardless of time on trigger.

I like the game a lot overall, but I did notice when I went back to CoD4 just how godlike the RPD is smile  I miss it.
8379  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Call of Duty World at War (360) impressions on: November 10, 2008, 05:24:34 PM
Bolt action rifles work well, though in hardcore you're just as well off with the semi's.

Each Bolt action does indeed handle differently.  My biggest problem though is that even with stopping power and against a non-juggernaut target one shot doesn't always kill in normal mode.  This basically means you're handicapping yourself since you get one shot off, then get killed while rechambering a round even if you hit the target.  Very frustrating.  I've seen people with a non-scoped bolt action with bayonet go 20+ kills with <5 deaths, and they always seemed to get one shot kills but that just doesn't seem to happen with me.

Hardcore mode isn't quite as frustrating as it was in CoD4 due to the different lethality of the weapons.  While the semi's will often be a one shot kill, it can take two on someone with juggernaut, whereas with a bolt action you're pretty much guaranteed a one shot kill in hardcore mode.  I really wish there was a mode that was smack in the middle of the two though.  Lethality in CoD5 normal mode seems higher than in CoD4, but the latency also seems higher and is more frustrating.  What I mean by this is that often you'll come around a corner, see someone and shoot a burst at them and die.  Then if you watch the replay you'll see that you never even shot before you died according to the server.  Seems to happen far too often.  At least in Hardcore you don't have to watch the replay slywink

Regarding the range differences, while the maps shown in the demo are generally smaller than the average CoD4 map, the damage drop off and accuracy of the full auto weapons is enough that people do quite well with the semi and bolt action rifles.  I'd actually go so far as to say that though the thompson and mp40 were very popular early on, most people are using the various semi rifles at the end of beta.  When you need to shoot a precise shot far off they can do it, and up close you can squeeze off rounds very quickly.

I'm just glad that now we can unlock more custom slots.  Gives a purpose behind prestige mode as well as helps with the fact that I always needed 4 or more slots.

I'm currently playing as evil unarmed and find that you don't really do that poorly with worn out equipment or no weapon at all.  Iron fist means you still do decent damage and with all the crit bonuses I'm doing crits more often than not and crits do a lot more due to other perks.
8381  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Call of Duty World at War (360) impressions on: November 10, 2008, 02:51:07 PM
I've been finding that Hardcore mode in CoD5 is actually much easier than normal mode.  kinda backwards intuitively, but I usually get the first shot off on someone and in normal mode it gets frustrating how many times I'll hit someone first then they turn around and I'm dead.  In hardcore mode they are dead before they turn around.

After putting in over 24 hours of gameplay in the demo then playing CoD4 for a few hours last night I have to say that from what the demo shows I prefer CoD4.  There are things that are better in CoD:WaW, but the experience was more enjoyable in CoD4.  I think a large amount of this is the fact that from the time you know you are being shot to the time you are dead in CoD:WaW is so short you can't react.  In CoD4 if I come around a corner and there is someone all the way on the other side of a room and they start shooting, I have time to panic turn around and get out taking some damage but I'll still be alive.  In CoD:WaW, I'll be dead as soon as I round that corner.

I definitely prefer the dogs to heli's though, people shoot dogs, they don't ignore them like the heli.

Most games only get about a month of heavy GT use.

This is both a blessing and a curse.  On one hand if I pick up Gears 2 on release I'll have a good month of heavy-duty MP action.  But that's another game added to my ridiculous backlog and yet another $60 out of pocket following the purchase of Stars Wars:TFU and Fallout 3.  But if I manage to hold out for a bit I unfortunately miss the MP rush, but I save myself $60 as I felt the SP campaign in the first Gears was a bit repetitive and I'm not so anxious for the SP campaign in the sequel.  But then I miss out on the Gears experience, and since the MP portion is such a blast while it lasts, simply getting the game for SP is such a letdown if I miss the initial MP popularity.

This could be an exception with GoW2, L4D and CoD5 all coming within 2 weeks of each other and all very much focused on MP as well as CoOp.

Although I own both and will play some on the PC, I'm having more fun on the 360 version.  The auto-aim more than makes up for the lack of precision on the control pad and I feel much less like I'm playing a game and more like I'm 'there' with the gamepad.  I might try the PC version with the gamepad to see the best of both worlds.

It's kind of irritating that the 360 touts 'HD 1080p' for their games but they aren't really running at that resolution, they are obviously upscaled.  Difference in graphics is pretty huge.  glowy effects are strangely better on the 360.
