8361  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / COD4 (360) daytime players -Forza as well ;) on: April 22, 2008, 12:53:53 PM
I'll be playing off and on during the day this week and would like to not play alone.

I'll be playing a bit of Forza and RB as well, but mostly COD4.

Send me a msg if you want to play.

BTW, those of you that heard me bitching the last couple days about how I tried knifing people and then they turn around and knife me, it ends up there is a glitch with the G3 and M16 and silencers that makes the knife lunge not connect sometimes. frown  I wasn't going crazy.

It really is a shame they can't pull the plug on COD5 or at least make Treyarch change the name so they don't soil the name.

I realize you just got the system and might not want to hear upgrade suggestions just yet, but I'd suggest replacing your vid card as soon as you can with a full blown 8800 (insert suffix here).  The x600 version of any nvidia card always have some performance issues compared to the x800 of the same series.

You probably won't notice for awhile since it's such an upgrade from where you were before, but I just got an 8800 GTX and it's amazing compared to an 8600.  I actually preferred my 7800 GTX to the 8600

I love Logitech. Love my G15 keyboard.
And I was particularly fond of my G7 corless gaming mouse until it started registering single clicks as double-clicks (try and drag a file, and opens the file instead) abut 6 months after I got it. Their support was terrific, though, and they sent me a brand new G7 straight-away.
Now, about 8 months later, that new G7 is doing the double-click thing. Frustrating. Seems to be a common trouble with the G7.

To their credit, I've just been notified that they have just shipped me yet another G7. I'm apprehensive. I almost wish they'd sent another model this time, but then again, I've never found another mouse that responds as well (especially love the ability to change sensitivity on the fly) or feels as nice as the G7 (aside from that cursed double-click problem).

My MX700 started doing that and they sent me a MX1000. As I was waiting on the MX1000 to arrive the MX700 cleared up and I used it another year and a half before I switched the the MX1000. Im still using that MX1000.

Interesting that it's such a common problem.  I used to use a MS optical trackball and without fail after about a year every one I had would start double clicking like that.  5 mice later I've given up on them.  Didn't realize other brands and models had the same issue.

Oh, just to prove Microsoft is trying to drive me screaming from PCs to Macs...

-I can't run Gears of War PC (even in this broken, sometimes it runs, mostly it crashes form) without the latest ATI drivers.

-However, the latest ATI drivers "break" the DRM-reading function of my Best Buy Rhapsody music store (for my Sansa MP3 player).

So, I can play a half-arsed, barely functional version of Gears of War. Or my subscription-based MP3 player can function at all. Or I can join the crowd and get a noisy, unreliable console that may or may not work for more than a few weeks, or months.

Yes, Microsoft has found a way to introduce bugs and patches to console games, make consoles that fail frequently, AND screw me -- the last non-next-gen-consoler -- over in the PC-ports department. They're amazing!!!!!  headbang3

**** Microsoft!  finger

wouldn't ATI's drivers breaking stuff be ATI's problem?  hell, that's the whole reason why I'll never have another ATI video card in my system.

I am looking forward to all the mods.

I always do too with Oblivion, but then it gets to a point I am in now. I would love to play again, but the number of mods is so overwhelming I don't know where to start. Plus the scaling mobs is kind of turning me off.

The rattle is just the tilt sensor, nothing to be worried about.  As for the connection issues, sometimes I have to unplug and replug the power to the USB hub.  It feels like more an issue with the 360 than a problem with the controller since it also can affect the other instruments.

I bought a 'real' powered hub and didn't have the problem. I think it's a problem with the cheap hub they included.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the way that this is worded is that playing online is optional. In short, if you want to play online, you have to have a broadband connection. We all know that as a MMO, you have to have an online connection to play.

I believe you can play solo at least until level 20, not sure if offline play is available after that.

At the risk of fully exposing my total lack of understanding regarding MMO pvp "stuff" - I have a question.

If repeated 'ganking' (which I assume is being the recipient of getting killed over and over and over again) is such a turnoff to so many people, is there not some way for designers to implement a system that seriously discourages it, without killing the whole concept?

Or is it more a matter of devs wanting to give people total freedom to play however they want, and the downside to that happens to include the 'freedom' to gank to your heart's content?

Msot dev's seem to get lazy and don't want to put a lot of thought and programming into any safeguards to prevent it.  Really in my experience the best way to prevent it from ruining people's games is to make sure people are held accountable for what they do.  If someone spends their time running around killing people at random, they should be feared, but they should also be fearful of something.  In some games they would have NPC guards aggro them, or they couldn't go into towns.  Other games might put a large bounty on the player which makes other players tempted to band together and take them out repeatedly.

There are always going to be people who enjoy taking people out at every chance, they just need something to balance it.

I was a ganker in WoW on the PvP servers.  I played solo 100% of my time (stopped playing at 66).  Anyone who actually tried to get away or go somewhere else was able to, and many people came back with groups to take me out and/or camp me.  Was great fun being on either side of it and only once did someone get bent out of shape.  Many times I had people who either took me out repeatedly until I figured out how to deal with them, or people I took out repeatedly log onto toons on my side and chat with me about what happened.  Lots of 'nice job, thought I could get you but couldn't' or 'lol, you've got my number today'.

I find that the best asset I have for enjoying pvp servers is patience.  If I get ganked, I try again, it happens again, I move onto another area or game.  I generally play solo, but make a lot of friends for when I need em.  I can definitely see where if you either have severely limited playtime, or a short temper and/or little patience it's probably not worth your time to even attempt pvp servers and I understand that.

I just have a terrible time playing vs computer AI in any capacity, it's why I almost exclusively play mp games.  Fighting mobs is more like solving logic puzzles since there are set patterns to see, understand and solve.  I used to really enjoy these, but it's a bit too predictable now.  Fighting other players is chaotic and usually you'll find some unpredictability in it.  True that you can get this in battleground type settings and level up in pve, but then I'm doing something I don't like to get to something I do and that's why I stopped playing WoW in the first place.

/rant over.   didn't mean to turn this into pvp vs pve at all, I understand both sides and have been on both.  I also know that I may have been lucky in my past experiences.  I also just wanted to throw my hat in to try to get people to play pvp with me so I have people to call on for help when the shit hits the fan slywink

I found this little story amusing.  It's from a recent Gamespot interview of the game director.  I'm not sure if it makes me more or less prone to playing on the PvP server:

"GG: I think I will end with a personal story here. I play undercover on the beta, naturally, and the Funcom employees had made an in-game guild called "Incognito" (we figured that being in-your-face was the best way to hide things). I was playing a level 23 conqueror on the PVP beta server, and was loitering around outside Conarch Village in Conalls Valley when I was approached by this level 35 assassin, I think.

He said, "Would you like to leave your guild and join ours? We are a tough, no-nonsense PVP guild. What do you think?"

I replied, "Sounds interesting, but I am sorry--my friends and I just formed this other guild, as you see. Maybe with another character?"

"Too bad for you," he said, and then went on and beheaded me.

Some of you might be a bit puzzled over what is really funny about this story, but to me it is just such a cool, hardcore PVP act...it is like the [epitome] of PVP in Age of Conan. Tough, deadly, and definitely not for kids! "

Except that will be the exception.  Normally the 35 assassin would have killed him before he knew he was there, then he would tea bag him, shout out "take that you noob, I am hardcore, your guild sux, mine rocks....", then he would wait around and gank him 10 more times just for good measure.

Having played hundreds of hours of FFA pvp in various games, I've only had what Arkon mentions happen once.  That's it, once.  You do get jumped and killed sometimes, but the kind of prickish attitude described is far more likely in a fps.  The one time it did happen to me?  Lineage 2 BETA and it had a lot to do with the type of people drawn to the game.

Whether or not Conan will have that type of person I don't know (probably will).

I only ran into one trash talking arrogant ass in almost 2 years of Shadowbane, and our guild smacked him so hard and went after his guild so hard that they disowned him to get us to stop.  There are ways to make the world enjoyable yet mostly realistic in it's politics.  I hate pvp when you can't actually defend or police it at all, but I also hate not being able to do something about a griefer.  I've been griefed FAR more often on PvE servers than on PvP servers and you can't even do anything about it short of petitioning for a GM and that doesn't often help.

Sure it is, but misrepresentation of a crazed actor who is being used as a figurehead isn't the same as misrepresenting a philosopher or scientist who actually knows what he is talking about. smile

That actor chose to be the spokesman for the NRA because he believes in it.   You speak of the NRA as if they are some shadowy backroom smoke and mirrors group.    They are actually made up of 4 million citizens, and you can join any day you want and participate.     I was a recruiter for the NRA an signed up many folks.   I did it in my own time, but the NRA sent me materials and the like.    It was my time and energy expended by my own choice.     Charton Heston's time and energy by his own choice contributed to the cause as well.

I have the lil 360 keyboard that attaches to the controller now so I sometimes use it and sometimes my computer so no problems on the msgs smile

I'll suggest to anyone that doesn't feel confident about staying alive for the whole round that once you get a helicopter, hold on to it and start being more aggressive.  Then once you die, call it up and be very conservative.  On most maps this will allow you to use your helicopter to get you at least an air strike and sometimes another helicopter.  Some of my best games have been like this.  UAV, Air-strike, run out kill three more people and die, respawn and call helicopter, camp and peg a couple people while helicopter kills a few, air strike for the rest, run out and kill a couple, die, respawn and call helicopter, repeat.  This is how I ended up going 40+ kills with 4 deaths in a very, very short amount of time on Pipeline.  Overgrown was almost as good.  Basically on any map that a helicopter is a good deal you are better off taking the death and using it when you respawn.

This advice works for airstrikes too in some regards.  If you get an airstrike but are in a bad spot and likely to be overrun or killed, try to get somewhere safe.  Worst case is you die and the airstrike will help you get an airstrike slywink

Just be wary that AoC seems to be extremely quest heavy for leveling up.  If the quest leads you through linear areas which have obvious bottlenecks then you are going to have some serious ganking going on.  If you don't belong to a guild that can break the gank, well might as well quit the game for the night and hope the next day the gankers go away because you won't be able to do anything at all.  In those games you mention, there were always alternatives.

If it isn't possible to level up without doing quests (at a reasonable rate) then I won't be playing the game anyway.  I don't enjoy quest-centric games very much.

So if you don't do quests, do you just grind or what?

I usually do some quests, but I prefer to level off PvP and if that isn't possible then I like having lots of options such as different places to grind and multiple quests to choose from in different areas.  I levelled in DAOC on the PvP server almost entirely from PvP only and it really wasn't all that much slower than questing and was much more fun.

I definitely feel bad in a snobbish kinda way for people who don't give music they aren't familiar with a shot.  I pretty much download it all and have been pleasantly surprised that I enjoy either listening to, playing or both almost every song I've downloaded.  (didn't like Cherry Bomb, that's about it)

Trying out new music can be very nice, and it often takes a few listens to appreciate a new style or band that you aren't familiar with.

Alright, ATB. I finally have it again since the USPS took its sweet time delivering the game via trade. Played a bit last night to warm up, and remembered why I hate FPS's so much on consoles - precision aiming with your thumbs sucks. But I have it and once I train up a bit I'll find you.

Then you'll be sorry as you find your ass kicked all over the map(s). ninja2

You've caught me in a weird stage. I'm very inconsistent (consistently inconsistent!) and will most likely be online tonight. Let's party up and rock the world? Or do you have some lame RL commitment?

he'll probably be busy looking for white hairs  nod

I'm still having a blast with the PC MP.  the nice thing about the PC and public servers is that practically no one uses the built in voice chat, so there's less verbal asshattery.

It's so easy to mute people that I find I'd rather just pop a button to mute each offender than miss out on the teamwork that often happens on Live.  Most people aren't idiots that play, it's just that there are enough of them that you usually have 1-2 per room of 12.

I'm used to tornado weather, what I'm not used to are the two earthquakes we just had this morning.  icon_eek

supposedly people felt it here in Columbus.  I guess I slept through it.

These were the first two I felt, all the ones that have happened since I was born I slept through.  Funny story, the first one happened and my dad started yelling at me to turn the music down since the house was shaking then he got to my room and saw I was still asleep.
