The current client will update to retail client at release.
8362  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Warhammer. Open RVR vs. Core rule servers. Lets talk about it. on: September 10, 2008, 06:03:54 PM
The inability to go back to unlock tome entries can be a killer too since some of the tome entries unlock abilities.  This would mean if you accidentally outlevel a tier and didn't get your unlocks, you're SOL for that character for good.
8363  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Warhammer Online headed to Open Beta on 9/7 on: September 10, 2008, 04:56:11 PM
I also want to give a heads up to the people who are/were planning on playing dest with me that I may still go Order.  It seems a fair amount of the people who were talking about going Dest have switched over to Order in the last month.  with the SH mostly broken, I have little reason to play it until it's fixed.
8364  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Warhammer Online headed to Open Beta on 9/7 on: September 10, 2008, 04:54:29 PM
Tried an Eng again today for the first time in a couple months.  Wow, a lot has changed.  They are pretty kick-ass tough little SOB's now.

So far out of all the classes the only one that isn't ready for release is my favorite.. the SH.  Still mostly broken and very underpowered.
8365  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Warhammer - Euro stuff (Euro guild as well) on: September 10, 2008, 04:52:40 PM
I really wish you guys could just play with us over here, especially since GOA is f'n everything up.  Are the pings just way too bad?
8366  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Warhammer. Open RVR vs. Core rule servers. Lets talk about it. on: September 10, 2008, 04:51:10 PM
I'm one of the 'hardcore' pvp players.  I loved playing on Darktide in AC, Mordred in DAOC and SB.  I love FFA pvp and anything goes.  However, I hate the Open ruleset for WAR and will be playing on a Core server.

Three main reasons are:

1) there really is plenty of pvp on a core server
2) the chickening on Open servers will prevent you from backtracking to explore, unlock tome entries or to help guildmates
3) most mobs in the enemies territory will be friendly to you which gives you an obscene advantage.  So basically anyone who stays in their home turf is at a disadvantage in pvp which is exactly opposite of how it should be.

edit:  I'll add as a possible NDA breach that I've played on an Open ruleset server and the above are verified by myself slywink

hmmmm This may be the first MMO I buy without getting to try it first. You guys make it sound like a WoW killer or at least an equal.

I really want to play a black orc. The stuff Ive seen makes them look so cool.

For me, it does a lot of things that WoW didn't do, that I hated about it.  I wasn't a hardcore player, but new what bugged me.

So far, I don't feel that grind that WoW had.  The ability to level up NO MATTER what you are doing is so nice.  If I want to PVP I'll get XP, if I want to grind mobs, I get XP.. and if I want to PVE I'll get XP.

Plus the classes actually require playstyle, rather than gear (at least at this point).

It's fun.. and I see myself going further with this MMo than any I've tried before.

Overall I expect it to take just as long to hit max level (rank, not renown rank) as it does in wow, a big difference to me though is that I can have fun the entire way and never feel a need to rush once I'm at 20 or so.

I stand corrected, and the archmage is indeed a healer class.  However, in the PQ I was running, I was grouped with two of them, and I never saw a single heal, which led me to believe they're not a healing class.  Apparently they were being played by folks who just liked to nuke.

I know about the healer mechanic, which is why I was so surprised to find that there is no healer at the graveyard in the second camp in the high elves area, where you respawn after dying in the first PQ.  I right clicked every NPC in the camp, and not one offered to heal me.  Maybe there is one, but it was hidden so well that I couldn't find it.

I don't want anyone to think that I'm down on the game, since I'm not, and I'm really enjoying playing.  I just had a frustrating time and I literally had nothing I could do in-game for ten minutes, so I vented.

The ultimate irony is that the shield I got as a reward for grinding the PQ wasn't even useable.  Apparently the sword I had was a two-handed sword, and I didn't realize that the game uses the tag "great sword" to mean two-hander (why they couldn't say "two-handed" I don't know), and I don't have a one-handed sword at the moment.  Of course, 20 minutes after getting the influence shield, I got a blue shield drop off a mob that's much better than the reward shield, but that I also can't use.  slywink

Can't wait for head start so I can finally start playing Chaos and Greenskin like I want to.

Play with me and I'll not heal you!  (that will be because I will probably be a Squig Herder though and not because I don't like you smile )
8371  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Warhammer Online headed to Open Beta on 9/7 on: September 09, 2008, 12:44:29 PM
Not sure why you seem to think the High Elves have no healer class... they have the Archmage which is my favorite healer class of all of them on either side.

If they're going to be gigantic PITA's about the beta, then I won't particularly trust them to handle release any better.

I doubt they're intentionally trying to screw anyone over. It's just that 9GB file + massive interest + thousands of beta slots opened simultaneously = slow downloads the day before beta. Mine downloaded fine...2 weeks ago.
This is definitely the case, you have a very large file and an incredible number of people trying to get it.  Why would you expect it to be easier than it is?  I had no problem getting mine, I started the torrent and then chilled for a day or so.  Haven't seen any other company do a bigger release of a free product that was as large and provide more downloads faster yet. slywink

I have never gotten the live headset to work through the adapter, on either the RB guitar or drumset.

So how does one ever communicate via voice? I'm not too interested in shredding my cables by modding.

In theory, you should just plug in the adapter, then plug the 360 headset into it.  Unfortunately, I've tried 2 different adapters and I couldn't hear or be heard with either one.  I know it's not my headset, as it works just fine when I plug in into either the Xplorer guitar or the regular 360 controller.

I did, however, pick up a wireless headset, and it worked just fine with the drumset.   I sold it because I wasn't using it enough to warrant the $60, but I think I might need to pick up another one for RB2.

I'll also add that the newer model of microsoft wired headset doesn't need the adapter, it has a different type of plug on the end and works with the instruments straight up.

Ceekay, your creature is positively scary! Let me guess, Herbivore? ;-)

anyways, as I posted over at OO, the game has faded a bit on me, space section was, boring and repetitive, and without charm once I played it for a few hours...

The dumping down of the games depth has made this a bit too, well, empty for me - the only thing that matters in your  creature design, seems to be the poison and the spike thing, all other things is purely cosmetic, since having a trillion legs doenst make your creature go faster, or anything else at all...

On the other hand, some people are incredible at this - at my last game, I ran into a christmas gnoe thingie that scared me a LOT!

Rewatching videos of the game from 2 years ago and such, it's a shame to see so many aspects 'dumbed down' from what they were trying to do.  They showed off the procedural animation so much on the creature stage and then in the release you can't actually do the eating/dragging of meat and such.  Now it just eats when you click and if you move it stops.

More impressions. I don't like Space Stage at all. I can see why many people would, and I'm not saying it's bad, but it's my least favorite stage. The learning curve is a cliff.

When I get home from work later I'm going to start a new game and try being a herbivore this time smile

So for me

1) Creature
2) Cell
3) Civilization
4) Tribe
5) Space

Although Space will probably get better as they patch, update and expand the game. Just needs some more tool tips and better mission information. "Return to Bladoo" What? Where in the universe is Bladoo? Turns out it's a planet. In what system? Sorry we're not going to tell you, you have to search 45,000 systems to find it.  disgust

Otherwise the game is terrific!

So far every mission I've had that says to go to a planet tells me the system in the mission details.  Also, if you turn on the travel trails (which the tutorial tells you how to do) the path to your mission planets/systems is highlighted as a giant line. slywink

I'm not digging the combat interface of space mode, but I've had no problems finding my way around.
8381  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Warhammer Online headed to Open Beta on 9/7 on: September 07, 2008, 09:19:25 AM
'Open' beta is still a beta and they will be bringing stuff down and testing the whole time.  Lots of issues still to resolve, but it's kinda normal for them to reboot and tweak often at this point.  Hope the pathing is fixed soon though, i think part of the problem is their reluctance to treat the pet as something other than a mob.  If it used it's own pathing things would work better, as it is the mobs are now sticking to people like pets to their masters and when they can't we get 'target not attackable' do to anti-kiting code

I've owned and worked on many systems over the last 15 years and I've never seen one that sleep/hibernate worked well enough on that I could suggest it's use to anyone.  I always disable that feature on my own systems and suggest my clients do the same.  When brand new with hardly anything loaded it sometimes works fine, but once you start installing and running programs it's often a headache for support.

The Wanderers are a casual guild, I don't see why anyone that doesn't have an issue with them play with them if you're going to play order.

Destruction could be a little different, they will be playing Dest on an Open server.

I'll be playing with a bunch of people on Destruction side of a Core server though, and more are always welcome.

I just don't really see the reason for everyone to start their own guild though, short of the hardcore raiding, tight schedule type people.

I have 10-15 people planning on playing with me, if we get more of the small groups like that together we'll have a large enough pool that everyone should have someone to group with if they want to.  I'd just hate to see us end up like we did with every other mmo with people scattered on 10 different servers between the 4 websites I frequent.

don't feel bad, no one can play online with all the broken netcode and bugs that plague this. i seriously want to know how this passed MS' QA. i thought they were to so anal about that stuff. no word on anything is really frustrating everyone.

it's a good game, just by the time i can actually play online i'll have UI and rock band 2. and this game will be once in a while if i feel like it.

While a lot of guilds will put together ideal groups for the city content, as far as I know it will still have the open party system which is an easy way for people to get in there and get some action.

Also we don't know yet if the gear you get from those raids is any better than the high level pvp gear (which is only purchasable when your side owns the city).
