They are clearly disturbing if you are a video game enthusiast, as they hurt the developers. That said, they do sound damned convenient now dont they? I would love to have 20 games with me on one cart. I have a VECTREX multicart (legal, or no one cares) that has every vectrex game on it and its a hoot...
Its rampant in china/japan more so than here.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What is suffocating Pc Gaming... Ill tell you what.

I finally upgraded my home PC after 5 years things were starting to go, and it just felt like time. I have NEVER had a PC this long. The recent console’s really helped that as they have been taking a big chunk of my time. So I jumped in and bought a DELL XPS 630 with a quad processor 4 gig o ram Nvidia 8800 GT. And I was thrilled….UNTIL
PROBLEM ONE
Install Unreal Tournament 3 and it looks amazing!!! But has these horrible random PAUSES that are enough to drive you crazy… After 2-3 hours of diagnosis, I ascertained it is a driver issue with the NVIDIA drivers and QUAD processors. I found a beta video driver that fixed the problem.
PROBLEM TWO
In the mean time, everything was running just DANDY, and the I decided to INSTALL SP1 for VISTA. Now the machine wont come out of sleep mode. Its maddening. After an hour of playing with drivers… it only got worse. I did a system restore, and went back, but I was able to ascertain that this is a relatively common problem with SP1 and there are tons of users with similar problems. The solution right now? Uninstall Sp1, or don’t go into SLEEP mode. I chose the latter.
PROBLEM THREE
I decided to get some games that I have been missing out on over the past several years and made a stop at Gamestop… I was HORRIFIED by the selection, I couldn’t find Command and Conquer 3, Rise of Legends, Company of Hero’s after three stores, I found Company of Hero’s. I reckon I need to buy games for the PC online. Being out of the loop on this one, this was quite the shock. I remember when 80 percent of the store was PC and it was OVERWHELMING what to even BUY!!! THE HORROR.
PROBLEM FOUR
I get home with my poichase of Company of Heros and try to install it and the serial key does not WORK after a call and some hand flapping I was told the manual key was bad and should have another number in the box. In the middle of the manual was an index card with a number stating the manual printing was hosed use this number….. and after a LENGTHY install.. I was treated to having to download a patch that was over 100 meg. No problem, another 10 minutes it installs and I restart the game PATCH 2 at 40 meg… Rinse, Wash, Repeat. I didn’t even believe this myself a THIRD PATCH had to download. ONE HOUR LATER I HAVENT SEEN THE GAME YET.
Now I should say, I often enjoy diagnosing PC problems. But my concern is how JOE SIXPACK would do ANY OF THIS. The answer is he wouldn’t he is playing his Wii. After all these years these problems SHOULD not EXIST.
Cries on his autoexec.bat trying to remember the commands for emm386… Hugs his PC softly weeping.

All this is nice. But I cant help but feel Sony needs to wake up.
The PSP is now in its 3rd year?
What is the intended life cycle of this unit? When a new Nintendo handheld comes out they will need to respond.
I cant help but feel that the PSP is in the LEAST middle aged... and you are only now postulating add ons and downloads where have you guys been?
WHY cant I still dl anything over wi-fi? 3 years into the product life cycle?
Sony is sound asleep. And where the hell is HOME? the Ps3 is going to be in its 2 year when they finally get around to that.. hire more people, drink some coffee for gods sake.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS3 Disconnects --FIXED
|
on: February 06, 2008, 01:32:33 PM

I have been going crazy with my 60 gig Ps3... I have been getting random disconnects with the controllers just about every 5-10 minutes.. just as you are about to make that important leap in Ratchet and Clank. It was MADDENING. It happened with both controllers I had. I refused to send it in for repair to Sony because there was no guarantee I would get my 60 gig back (i want full BC) thats why I paid more for it.
I imported a DUAL SHOCK 3 and played (for the first time ever!) for 2 hours without a SINGLE disconnect! and the vibration is a welcomed addition....
As pissed as I am to have two useless controllers, I am more relieved that it is resolved!

Does Japan Matter anymore? Im not being an ass, Im just not sure it meant what it once did. Quirky gamers that even stymie the developers as to what is going to be a hit. That said, if the 360 is doing so terrible and teh Ps3 isnt knocking them dead.. are they all playing the Wii over there or what the hell are they playing?

Mark me down in the couldn't care less about achievements camp. Seriously, they are worthless to me and I can't even remember the last time I checked the number of achievements I completed in a game.
EDIT: Smoked eel: awesome and I will most likely be having some tomorrow! Corndogs: equally awesome. Fucking diet.
Smoked Eel is delicious.

I have been giving “achievements” on the Xbox 360 a lot of thought as of late. A friend of mine is egging me on, and I’m still not motivated to run around and collect “insert item here”. Maybe, I’m old and have lost my competitive edge much like a bloated steroid injected out of work bowling star.
Everyone gets a different buzz from gaming. I personally am not a “completionist” gamer anymore, there was a time… I would spend 14 hours looking for new islands in Pirates! for the commodore 64 but lately, the fun in gaming to me is not getting every possible do dangle and orb, the fun in gaming, is just that, the fun. That said, I will be the first to admit a certain level of satisfaction whenever I hear that little ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED sound, telling me what a good little boy and gamer I have been. For me, achievements are not the way, the truth and the life, unless I’m having one hell of a great time collection. But many “completionist” gamers are going GAGA over achievements, and if that is their motivation for making it all the more fun, Im thrilled for them.
I think this has to do with me being a NINTENDO junkie. I have ALREADY wasted too much time collecting every puzzle piece in Banjo and Tooie and Yooie, Donkey Kong 64 collect-o-thons, Super Mario stars… on and on and I have been there and done that to death. A good friend of mine once gave me sage advice he got from his mother, I love to read books, but life is too damn short to read a bad one, If I bought a book then DAMN IT (shakes his fist to the sky in a mocking fashion) I was going to finish that damn book! Now, I give the book away… or just toss it aside. Life is too damn short for me to arduously collect dangle mcfiddleywops anymore.
Understand, I want to be clear, I enjoy achievements, but they are not the reason I play games… rather they are an enhancer much like a sexual stimulant, if they make it feel better to play then I’m all for it.

No, I lost the urge to keep up with the hottest audio recievers long ago. For several reasons.
I live with a woman.
What this means is, I have taken a poll and have NOT met a woman who loves to watch an action movie that SHAKES the couch.. their ears are MUCH more sensitive to noise than a man's. and it would drive me INSANE to spend 2k on the equipment then run all the wires through the cieling/wall that would make me sick to listen to it at a REASONABLE level.
So I have my denon 5.1 in my game room that I am happy with, and I have no desire to upgrade it due to my kids periodically turning it BLAZINGLY loud and to this day, I have no idea why the speakers still arent blown.

I found out the hard way that the FIOS router is OUT OF THE BOX incompatible with the wireless XBOX 360 adapter.
(one of the reasons I dont have FIOS to date, I hate that damn router)
That said, I got it working at a friends house by dowloading the latest BETA firmware drivers for the router. I believe it was an ACTIONTEC? but do a google search for the router and xbox live. you will find the forum with people having the same problem...
EASY FIX thank god.
Fios also preys havoc with SONOS. I dont want to beta test fios for them like I did DSL no thanks.
