I went to school on army bases in Korea in 1979-1983. But I gotta say, chances are most soldiers order their games over the Internet these days, not at the base PX or BX. AAFES is not as important as it was 30 years ago.

I'm going to assume that soldiers are following general trends and are most likely going to play MoH on a console, not download the PC version.  And console games means they are going to be looking to buy a physical copy.  So that's where this is relevant.  And soldiers overseas aren't necessarily going to have a lot of immediate local options.  Not that it will stop them from getting the game if they are so inclined.

I think you can order a physical copy from Amazon.

Are you using Microsoft Security Essentials for your antivirus?  Try disabling it and see if the problem goes away.  I switched it out for Avast because of a similar problem.  If you're actively reading or writing to a file MSE wants to scan it.  If it's a big file it chokes the system until it's done.

If you get the NickToons channel they show episodes with "Avatar Extras".  Think VH1's Pop-Up video with info bubbles giving behind the scenes info about story development, pointing out links between episodes, recurring themes, etc.  If you've seen the whole series it's worth checking these out.

Stephen Chow should have been the one to do a live action Airbender movie.  Look at the trailer for Shaolin Soccer.  That's a far better model of what the movie should have looked like than that mess M. Night gave us.

Here is the debut trailer, it gives a better impression of the game.

And here is an interview with the developer.  The magic system seems interesting, elemental powers you combine to get different effects.  For example combining fire and water creates steam, adding in earth creates a projectile.  He says it works like a cross with Guitar Hero so that could be good or bad depending on how it's done.

Hey, I've got a E5200 and an 8800GTS so don't think I'm some uber gamer.  I'm in the same boat as you (the E5200 is overclocked though icon_twisted).

Windows 7 doesn't require much more hardware than XP does, you could easily run it on your current PC as-is.  That said, I wouldn't be in any hurry to jump on it if XP is working fine for you.  Windows 7 has some nice features but the programs you use now aren't going to run any different because of it.  Most older programs run fine on 7, doing a dual boot for XP seems unnecessary.  DX10 and 11 add some new visuals, most of them are going to take a performance hit to run.  I do remember seeing something showing a few games running faster on DX10 but it was only by a very small amount.

58  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Help me pick a video card? on: May 06, 2010, 10:43:02 PM
I'll come over here to reply.   smile

The biggest gain would be from the video card, easily 3x to 4x better than what you've got now.  If you can only do one, do the video card.  Looking at this E4300 review you're probably only going to gain 15%-20% from the E6500 I recommended if you're stuck at stock speeds.  RAM isn't going to matter unless you're using more than 2GB.  RAM prices are kinda high right now anyway.  I got 4GB last summer for $40, it's at least double that price right now.

For the GTers, here's what I recommended on OO (all prices from Newegg and are after rebates):
Nvidia GTS 250 512MB, $90.
GTS 250 1GB, $110.
ATI 5750 1GB, $120.
5770 1GB, $140.

That's roughly in order of performance as well as price.  If you want some benchmark numbers, I'm looking at this Anandtech review.  There's numbers for 20+ different cards, from an old 9600GT to the 5970

ATI has the advantage of DX11 support, the Nvidia has Physx.  You might get more mileage out of Physx (Batman AA for example), a lot of the DX11 features are probably going to need more horsepower than the 5750 or 5770 can give you.  I don't know about ATI's profile support in the Catalyst drivers but I'm pretty sure they have that feature.  I've had both ATI and Nvidia cards but I've never used the profiles on either.

DRM was Tages.  It was removed with the 2.5 patch though.

Jersoc:  TC seems easier to control than the previous versions to me.  There's still some learning curve though.  I'm no expert, I've only played a few of the starting missions, but here's some advice to get you going.  Important keys to remember are:

Space:  switches between free-flight and mouse controls
Shift-A:  autopilot
J:  SETA (speeds up time)
X:  accelerate
Z:  decelerate

There are more but that will at least get you around.  In mouse mode most of your options are available on the bar on the left.  Best way to get around is to tag an object in mouse mode (you can pan around by holding the left mouse button) then hit autopilot.  It will go to the object and if it's a station in will dock, if it's a gate it will jump, etc.  If you're going to a distant object hit J so you're not waiting as long.  Everything is a distant object in this game so you'll be using J a lot.

If you're on a mission most of your targets will be selected for you as you go so it's not too hard to figure out where to go.  You can just autopilot step by step until you get to your objective.  For combat get close to the enemy (you can autopilot to them too), when you're within firing range hit Space for free-flight and start blasting (right mouse button).  Adjust your speed with X and Z.  Combat plays like Freelancer for the most part.

    * Fixed targeting issues with stations after a complex was destroyed
    * Fixed several issues with the Freight Scan mission
    * Fixed captured ships from Assassination missions being removed
    * Fixed missing difficulty levels with the Destroy Convoy mission
    * Fixed mission dialogs on ships starting on the wrong option
    * Fixed several minor mission issues
    * Fixed weapon information display for ships with only missile turrets

Download here

They also released Bonus Package 4.1.00.

The Bonus Package consists of a selection of scripts written by player community members. Egosoft has selected them as extensions that fit well into, and do not destroy the balance, of the game. The scripts have been signed and therefore they are enabled without activating the Script Editor.

The included scripts:

* Commodity Logistics Software MK1 (2010-04-27)

This software supports the pilot in coordinating his internal production logistics. It will enable a pilot to collect orders from different consumers within your enterprise and coordinate them with chosen suppliers. Therefore, it is possible to deliver the products from several suppliers of a single resource to different consumers.

* Commodity Logistics Software MK2 (2010-04-27)

This software allows the pilot to plan a route. The pilot is instructed to follow a given route and the corresponding commodity transfer orders for each intermediate stop entered. This enables the pilot to fulfil special tasks within the company or even at different stations. The route entered will be followed repeatedly until the pilot receives new orders.

* Commercial Agent (2010-04-27)

The Commercial Agent can serve all the needs of a single player station or complex, both buying resources and selling products as necessary. But in order to unlock all its abilities an Agent must train by carrying out simple duties for a while.

* Dockware Manager (2010-04-27)

A small extension to add wares or remove wares from player owned Trading Stations, Equipment Docks or Headquarters. The Manager can set limits for the different wares for the player Headquarters too. These limits get considered by Commercial Agents and Commodity Logistics MK1 pilots.

* Missile Defense Mosquito (2010-04-27)

This software protects a ship - or a whole convoy that the ship is part of - against missile attacks and fighter drones by using Mosquito missiles.

* Turbo Boost (2010-04-27)

The Turbo Boost device is capable of temporarily speeding up a ship beyond what’s normally possible.

The Proposition !

Saw this last weekend.  Definitely worth seeing.  A bit different since it's set in Australia but it has all the marks of a good western.  Two brothers are brought in for the murder of a local family by their gang.  The older brother is given a proposition:  bring in their eldest brother (and leader of their gang) for a pardon on himself and his younger brother.  The repercussions of this deal have far reaching consequences for all involved.

If you've got Comcast On Demand you can find it in the Free Movies this month, in HD even.

To me the greatest thing about B5 is the fact that it was made at all. I can't believe that JMS was able to successfully sell a studio on a show so overtly sci-fi, without any already established name brand, in which it's known from the beginning that the lead actor for all of season one will be abruptly replaced in season two. (I am assuming that this was truly preplanned from the beginning, but maybe I am wrong). The fact that JMS was able to keep it alive for 5 seasons - even switching from syndication to TNT was pretty unbelievable. The groundbreaking CGI work really impresses during the show's peak and as it clearly ended up being used to make DS9 better, I deeply appreciate how innovative it was. Definitely a landmark show in many ways, even if it's not even my favorite show to be set on a space station!

Losing Sinclair in the second season was never planned, he was supposed to be on the entire series.  In fact, much of the story arc was drastically changed because the show was always on the bubble of being canceled every season.  I don't know if you've ever seen this synopsis of the original story arc which is probably what JMS was working from at the beginning of season 1.

Spoiler for Hiden:
The end of the original arc had the B5 station destroyed, the Shadows seemingly victorious and Sinclair and Delenn on the run (this is probably why JMS said that when he told people the ending epsisode of the series they looked at him like he was crazy).  He had a second series planned that would have been the actual war against the Shadows.  This is also where the B4 station was pulled to, not the past as it was in the actual series.  Sinclair is still the lead character in this series and there is no mention of Sheridan.

The trackball takes the place of the second analog stick.  Why would you need another one?  I've been thinking that a ball would be a better way to mimic a mouse than an analog stick.  Looks like someone else is thinking the same thing.  Seems like you'd want the d-pad on the left and the trackball lower.  The way it is now all the motion elements are at the top edge of the controller, you would have to hold it too high to be comfortable.

I'd love to try one just to see if the trackball works as well as I think it would.
75  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Sword of the Stars: A Murder of Crows Expansion Announced! on: January 02, 2010, 10:35:04 PM
Yeah, the game has a pretty vertical learning curve and there isn't much in-game to help you with that.  Rorschach's wiki should help a lot, he's the one that made the tutorial videos.  Read the beginner's guide and know the hotkeys.  If you knew that Tab zoomed in and cycles though your ships (or E for enemies) you wouldn't have been watching the action from a distance.  I'm not sure that the keys are even in the manual.

Are you building tankers?  Tankers give you much greater range.  Send them with your fleets and they should solve your travel problems.

Best way to start the game is start small.  Pick the Disc map and reduce the star count as low as it will go.  Play Human or Tarkas and same for the other player (one or two).   Start yourself off with two or three planets so you're not waiting ten turns just to build one ship.  For exploration send one extended range and one tanker.  If they run out of fuel leave them at a planet as a listening post.  You may get a head's up if any enemy fleets pass by them.  For colonization send multiple colonizers.

It's going to take a few games to figure it out but there is much more to SotS than you've seen.

76  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Slow cookers: any thoughts? on: December 20, 2009, 04:25:46 AM
I'll toss out an alternative, take a look at an electric pressure cooker.  It's more expensive but it's also more versatile.  You can use it as a slow cooker, but as a pressure cooker you can get a similar result in significantly less time.  If you plan a meal for dinner but don't have time in the morning to prep it to slow cook you can do it that night in the pressure cooker and still have it done fairly quickly.  It has a timer and delay start so you don't have to watch it, it'll beep when it's ready.  You can also brown food in it, something you can't do with a regular slow cooker, so that's one less pan to clean up.

I got this one for Christmas a couple years ago.  It's worked great when I've used it and I should use it more.  That said, I'll still go to the stove for cooking most of the time.  It's probably just familiarity, I already know how to cook something that way and I'd have to check a recipe to make sure I'm doing it right for the pressure cooker.  Now that you've got me thinking about it I think I'll plan something to make in it tomorrow night.

I had a Panasonic DVR at one time.  No subscription needed and it picked up a tv guide listing so recording a show was as easy as selecting it off a menu, just like tivo or cable dvrs.  It even had a DVD burner.  Panasonic wasn't the only one, there were a lot of brands making them at the time.  They're probably still available or you might be able to find a used one on ebay.

Another option would be a PC with MythTV.

Now that Apple has switched from PowerPC to Intel chips there really isn't anything in a Mac that isn't an off the shelf PC component.  You can even run OSX on PC hardware.  Anyone want to build a Hackintosh?  The only thing unique to a Mac is that fruity logo.   Tongue
