The problem with most Anime shows lately, at least the ones on Toonami and Adult Swim, is that they lack any story. They just revolve around some competition that lasts for twenty episodes. The worst are the arena battles where the combatants are repeatedly one-upping each other with some heretofore unknown move. Of course since whatever their fancy new move is has never been seen before either they or someone on the sidelines has to give ten minutes of exposition on the history of the move, what it does and how it will spell certain defeat. Then, just as the recipient of said "ultimate move" is on the brink of defeat hey pull some mystical force out of their ass and come up with a heretofore unknown counter to the unstoppable, uncounterable ultimate move and save the day. Well unless they're the sidekick, then they have to go down so the hero can avenge his friend's loss by repeating the ultimate move/counter ultimate move pattern.
The last two shows that interested me lately were Samurai Champloo and Fullmetal Alchemist. At least those had some story and character development. I also liked Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo for mocking shows like the ones I just described above.

Having a hard time getting the picture to look right and SD seems to look horrible. It could be the Comcast box. Try hooking up the cable directly to the TV and see if the SD channels are still bad. Comcast does have a newer box with HDMI that is supposed to receive all channels digitally rather than analog for SD. I'm not sure they have it in all areas but if you can get it it will make a huge difference in the SD picture quality. It did for me anyway. I switched from the box with DVI to the HDMI box and it was a night and day difference. The SD picture is still not as good as HD but at least it's now clear and noise free. EDIT: Disarm, sounds like you need to look into the HDMI box upgrade too. The pixelation you discribe is exactly what I had with the DVI box. The HDMI box cleared that up and put it on par with direct connected cable.

It's a parody of the old Johnny Quest shows. Dad's a scientist with two sons and a bodyguard that travel around and have adventures. The difference is the father is pill popping loser living off what his father built, the sons are socially inept dofuses and the bodyguard is an ex CIA assassin that will kill anyone at the drop of a hat.

I've done it. It worked without a hitch. Just like they say: copy, delete that one file, then run Steam. The update recreates the file you deleted with the new location info. You're back in business in no time.

I think I can figure out the playable factions/sides. But the combat element doesn't look like anything we've seen before. Far more Unreal than WoW. Perhaps they're going the route SWG recently took? Personally, I'd love to see somebody pull off a "shooty" MMO. The genre could use a new play mechanic. Not that I've played them, but wouldn't Planetside or WWII Online fit that model?

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / 2006 SAAB 9-3 Aero vs 2006 Pontiac GTO - SOLD!

I test drove a Saab 9-3. Loved the dash and all the doodads. Wasn't impressed by the handling or performance. And like Clay said the reliability is pretty poor. Take a look at this Automobile magazine long term review and look at how often they had it in the shop. If I were getting a new car it would be the Subaru Legacy GT. All-wheel drive with a limited slip rear differential, 250HP/250 torque stock and easily modified to over 300 not much more than a chip reflash. All the fun of the WRX in a larger, more comfortable car's body. Check out LegacyGT.com if you want to know more. I was extremely close to buying one but decided to stick with my current car and fix it up some more. I have a 91 Mitsubishi Galant VR-4. If you know anything about those you know why the Legacy GT appeals to me, it's like a newer version of what I already have.

IF I hear another complaint about starforce CD protection I'll *&^#&*! Starforce is great for s/w makers, period. Let's see.... Anyone (generalization, you know what I mean, you know who you are) who says otherwise is a pirate and steals others work. Come on, you know this statement is stupid, inflammatory and just plain wrong. for you. If STARFORCE doesn't work or breaks shit on your computer, that's starforce dev's fault. I'm sure that whoever decides to use starforce has been assured that starforce will not cause any problems on peoples machines. Its not like the dev is out to get your computer busted. If devs are aware of problems caused by Starforce maybe they should think twice about using using it. It makes them look bad if their game breaks someones computer to the point of needing a reformat to work again. Most people aren't like us, they don't know about Starforce. They just know they installed Product X and it killed their computer. That's very bad for developers. If you want sales you don't want a bad experience with Product X keeping people from buying Products Y and Z. If I was a developer needing some cash I'd be tempted to use it on my S/W. Last I checked STARFORCE was working fine. Does Starforce = sales? I didn't know that. Now I see why they use it. Starforce isn't as bad as it was as far as doing serious damage goes. BUT, even if it causes no problems a program like this shouldn't be running 24/7. It should only run when it's installing program is running. Don't take up my CPU cycles when you're not needed. Poor devs, breaking their asses for pennies already with publishers and other middle*#&@s carving out profit. Maybe publishers and middlemen are a bigger problem than piracy then. Self publishing is hard but maybe you can carve out a bigger profit even if your sales are low. The thing is that just because you have a good product doesn't guarantee you sales. Look at any other entertainment industry and you'll see the same problem. Just because you can play a guitar and play it well doesn't mean your album is going to make it to the top 10. Okay got that out of the way. I can't wait to see all the  posts on me. But C'est La Vie. You asked for them, you got them. It seems that any new game that comes out with SF protect, there are 50 threads everywhere filled with people that say they won't buy the game. Pshaaa. Thats because you weren't going to buy it anyway. If you got burned the first time are you going to put your hand back in the fire? Hey, everyone gets a chance to VENT, right? Does ANYONE agree with me? Dunno, does Kobra post here?

I have a 27" JVC. I've had it for 10 years and I've had no problems with it. It has a "Theater Mode" setting that is pretty accurate right out of the box. I didn't try AVIA but I tested it with the THX calibration on the Lion King DVD and it was close enough that I didn't have to make any adjustments.

No no, lookup Proxy4Free with Google and use the cached version. Also, if you use Firefox get SwitchProxy. It's handy to have a few addresses available since they die out after a while.

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Why The Incredibles was the best movie of 2004
|
on: March 24, 2005, 01:54:49 AM
|
|
I've liked every Pixar movie so far and Brad Bird's previous movie, Iron Giant. The Incredibles though didn't really work for me. It started too slow and really didn't pick up until the end when the family is all involved in the superheroics. Mr. Incredible solo wasn't enough to keep me interested. Maybe if he had been working with Frozone during that time it would have helped. Frozone had too small a part, they built him up in the trailer but what you saw there was almost the entirety of his scenes in the movie.
I plan to see it again to see if it was the movie itself or just my expectations that was the problem. I'm sure that an Incredibles 2 would easily top this one, they can skip the introductory/orgins stuff and go right to the action. Or at least balance it better.

I don't think the 6600s need it but to be sure, look around for a molex jack. They're generally on the top right corner of the card, the end closest to the front of your case. It shouldn't be hard to spot, it's a big one. The same size plug as the hard drive or CD takes.

I don't think it's a network problem. The network drivers wouldn't kick in until after the desktop is displayed. The slowdown is before you're to the desktop, right?
I want to clarify where it's hanging up on startup. There three stages, the black and white "Starting Windows", the XP logo screen with the green progress bar and the desktop. Is it taking two minutes to get through the black and white stage? Or is it two minutes to get through the black and white and the XP logo screens? If so, which one seems longer?
I'd suggest two things first. One, do a scan for errors on the C: drive. Open "My Computer", right-click on the C: drive and choose Properties. Go to the Tools tab and click on "Check now". Check the box next to "Automatically fix file system errors". Don't check "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors", it takes too long and rarely finds anything. Click Start. You're going to get a message, "Disk check could not be performed...". Click Yes, it will scan on next restart. Restart your computer so it can do the scan. If after it does the scan it reboots it definitely found errors. If it goes straight into windows it didn't find anything or found very minor problems.
The second thing to do is check the Event Viewer and see if there are any errors. Go to the Control Panel, open Administrative Tools. Double-click the Event Viewer. Most of the stuff you're interested in is going to be in System group. You can check the others but they're less likely to have anything problematic. See if you find any Errors (red cicle with X) or Warnings (yellow triangle with !). Double-click an event to see more detail. If you look through the events you should also be able to find the result of the disk scan. If you find anything post it and we'll see if it's something serious.

Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / CPU Question

EM64T From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Extended Memory 64-bit Technology (EM64T) is Intel's implementation of AMD's AMD64 architecture, an extension to the IA-32 instruction set which adds 64 bit extensions to the x86 architecture. It is almost entirely compatible with AMD64.
EM64T gives Intel processors direct access to memory quantities in excess of 4 Gigabytes and allows larger applications to be run. The AMD64 architecture also adds additional registers and other performance improvements to the instruction set. With 64-bit memory address limits, the theoretical memory size limit would be 16 Billion Gigabytes (16 Exabytes), although the initial implementations do not support the full 64-bit addressability. So the EM64T adds some of AMD's 64-bit extensions to the P4 instruction set. There's probably not much difference in performance between the 560 and EM64T since all other specs are the same. Personally, if you want to go 64-bit get an Athlon64, the gaming performance is going to be better. Also, since Intel didn't include all of AMD's 64-bit extensions there might be issues in the future.

Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Win 2000 Paging file issue

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
There's a line that says "PagingFiles", that's the one you want to change. The format is <location> <initial size> <maximum size>. Mine for example says: C:\pagefile.sys 1536 3072
If that still doesn't work kick it a few more times.

It sounds like you're not hitting the "Set" button, just to the right of the Maximum box. If you don't do that it will not save your changes. I would also recommend setting both inital and max to the amount it says on the Recommended line.
