So am I missing something.  I don't see Anu.

Anu isn't one of the launch servers so we had to switch to Derketo.

Just for giggles I'm going to install AoC on my laptop.  A dual core AMD with 2 gig of RAM, but with just an onboard ATI xpress 1150.  If it even boots I suspect it'll just be a 32 gig chat client.

I LOL'ed.

In case anyone was thinking that we are only interested in PvE or that there is no PvP on the standard server, well that is not the case.

Since I work from home now, I've gotten to set my own hours.  This resulted in me staying up until 3:00 am last night and then sleeping in until 10.  If all continues to go well my sincere hope is that I will never set foot in an office at 8 am on a Monday every again.   ninja  I tend to "work" from around 2:00 pm - 7:00 pm.  Those just seems to be the most productive hours for me.

I'm by no mean a Funcom apologist (in fact I was  icon_twisted enraged icon_twisted by the Anarchy Online launch) but everything that I've been able to gather about the performance (from searching the boards and personal testing) is that:

1)  The open beta client really is crappier than the closed beta client

2)  The hitching is related to a (quite fixable) bug with pixel shaders.

3)  The endless load time may be releated to the windows indexing and search.  (I have both turned off on my Vista machine and do not experience long load times).

I found a wacko suggestion that adjusting your anti-aliasing settings while in game can reset the shaders to a value that works better.  I did it and sure enough it masively reduced the hitching and bumped up my FPS by a good 25%.

Though I tend to fall to the cynical side of things, I have to say that in this case I really do think things will be markedly improved by launch.  Also remember that as crappy as the AO launch was, they really did fix it and it went on to win at least one "Most Improved Game" of the year awards.

Anyone hear any word on server names?  Most times they will release this info early so that guilds can get organized and agree on something.  Hmmm.
13  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Age of Conan Server Poll on: April 29, 2008, 10:30:14 PM
Voted standard as I suspect that is the best way to keep the guild numbers up.

Ham, I've actually talked to Tharn and we have something temporary setup for now with the Wanderers site. Might just need a little time for DNS to do its thing.

So is there a way to redirect the dead URLs to at least a hastily thrown up HTML page to let those folks who don't know about this forum or PopeHat know what's going on?  I know there are a ton of Wanderers guild members who probably think we've been nuked off the planet at the moment.   icon_eek

I too had to roll back drivers.  I'm using the Omega drivers based off of Catalyst 4.12.  Seems to work okay though I swear my performance is worse than KotOR 1.   But I've yet to experience a crash or "slide show."  There is quite a thread about this on the Obsidian Entertainment forums.

Wow.  I just finished watching season 1 today and all I have to say is the last two episodes (12 & 13) were just incredible.   You won't believe some of the stuff that goes down.   Battlestar Galactica has now surplanted Lost as my favorite new series.

Screw it.  I'm just going to say it:

The new Battlestar Galactica is the best science ficiton on TV I've ever seen.  And I'll tell you why:  it's not pandering or trying to be cute; it's simply playing it straight.

I'd check into state schools with media arts programs.  Massively, massively cheaper.
32  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Martial arts on: January 23, 2005, 08:15:47 PM
I had a fun experience last December.  I was a wrestler in high school and am still very fit and exercise regularly.   My buddy Ben who is just about the same size and fitness level as me used to train in jujitsu at some somewhat famous jujitsu training den in San Diego.   For fun, we decided to go at it.  I took him down to his back immediately but he managed to roll me and swing around behind.  He then put me in what is a called a "rear naked choke."  I came within about .2 miliseconds of passing out.

Lenght of match:  @15 seconds.

Thiking back on this, it occured to me that had I been a lunatic mugger or some such thing, he could have easily killed me from that hold.

If you want a pretty telling comparison of martial arts styles check out Pride fighitng or the UFC champtionship DvDs.   The winners almost always have a combo of grapling/submission holds as a background.  And jujitsu is exactly that.

38  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Student Loan Consolodation... on: January 03, 2005, 11:36:12 PM
There are a couple of different things you can do if you are going to have trouble making payments.  For one you can just call them up and ask for a forbearance.  They will pretty much push back you having to pay your loans for a year while you get on your feat.   There are income sensitive options as well.  So if it looks like you are going to have trouble making a payment, I'd call them up rather than starting to miss them.
39  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Student Loan Consolodation... on: January 03, 2005, 09:41:20 PM
Yep, they can be a good deal.  BUT I strongly suggest you call your school's financial aid office to see what loan company they reccomend.  Mine are handled with Nelnet and I haven't had any problems with them.  The other thing that consolidation can do is extend the time period of the loan so can have more than 10 years if necessary.  (Though of course you should pay them off as soon as you can).
