Best stat of the night:

Brad Richards: 4 points(3 assists)
Jason Kidd: 3 points, 3 assists

Tells you all you need to know about how those teams' respective playoff series are going.

I am absolutely floored by this Stars team.   After this franchise's recent history(losing to lower seeds the last 3 years...all of those in the 1st round) and the horrific March they had(earned a total of 8 points in the entire stinkin month), there was no way Id have picked them to beat me and 5 of my buddies at broomball, let alone the defending champs.   And now they're up 2-0 on one of the most talented teams in the league.  Crazy.

I would avoid Cingular like the plague. Frogs Honey and I use Sprint PCS and they're alright, but the trick was to get a family share plan for around 1000 anytime minutes that is $90 a month with taxes included. I've heard great things about T-Mobile, but their coverage area wasn't as broad as we needed them to be. They might have increased that since last year, but I haven't checked.

You like Spring wbs?  cause I *HATE* them.  Yes hate...a cell phone company.     But they're terrible, IMO.  Ill be dropping them like a bad habit as soon as my contract is up.

I'm not being sarcastic, just curious. it really 'that involved'? I mean how long do you think it took someone to write a paragraph and post it on  20 minutes?  30?  Not like they're some overboard manic psycho doing a letter writing campaign to all 8 million people that bought The Black Album CD...

I say good for them, they're passionate about something and they put forth a modest amount of effort in trying to reach other ppl who share that passion.

As for Metallica, im in the boat that doesnt much care for anything post-The Black Album(and even that one doesnt do that much for me)...but if thats what they wanna do, meh go for it.  Metallica is no longer relevant in my life, but then music itself isnt nearly so important as it once was.   Sucks growing old, but there you have it.

Good stuff as always, and Im with ya warning, I dont think Claire has her baby.

NO idea what this has to do with the price of tea in China, but...I was having all sorts of weird problems with BFME.  For example, when I would double click my desktop icon to start the game, Id often get a hard crash back to my POST screen..Do no pass Go, Do not collect $200, but the mother of all crashes.  After I rebooted, I could select it and load the game no problem.  THat went on for a cuople of weeks until I finally bit the bullet and upgraded to SP2.  All my problems seem to have gone away, and my comp is a much happier machine.

Like I said, dunno if that's any kind of help, but it's all I got.

Look, the BCS is teh suck, everyone knows that. But good night nurse, when you get your ass beaten as thoroughly as Call did last night, then sometimes you need to look at the other team too. Hey Cal, media, everyone else - they got stomped, and the BCS sucks. Quit ignoring the winner here by focusing on the loser and what they did wrong. Cal got severely owned last night, get past it.

Oh yeah, and the Horns won, too.   biggrin

EDIT: but seriously, Texas went through the EXACT SAME SCENARIO last year.  We *thought* we were all but in for a BCS game, and at the last second we got bumped.  Being totally bummed by that fact, we lost to a Washington St. team that we *should've* thumped.  But just like I give credit to WSU for showing up for that Holiday Bowl last year, TT gets credit for being ready to play this one.  Im just so happy UT could win today.  What an amazing game!!!
10  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / XBOX hardware help on: December 30, 2004, 04:16:35 PM
OK Ive had an XBOX since they first came out 3ish years ago...but my original one "died" a couple months back.  Basically whenever I put in a game it said
"Xbox can't recognize this disk. Make sure it's an Xbox game, DVD movie, or audio CD. Also check to see if the disk is dirty or damaged. Remove the disk to continue."

So I figured its dead and Ill just have to get a new one...XMAS this year, the g/f gets me a brand-spanking new XBOX.  Not refurbished, not a used one, but new.   So  I get in a few games of Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow(yeah, never finished this one..see previous paragraph   ), save it and head off to work.  Yesterday I try to get back to it and....ta da!  same error.

WTF?!?   Both of my XBOXes say the same thing for everyone of my like 10-15 games, and Ive tried cleaning them with one of those CD cleaner-thingys you can get at EB or GameStop, but it's not helping.

Any ideas?  I sent in an email to XBOX support with my serial #, and Im waiting to hear back from them.  The g/f got the latest console online, so returning it will be kind of a pain in the arse(keeping my fingers crossed MS will just say "take it your local shop and pick out a new one on us", but Im just the teensy bit skeptical about that happening   ).

If you pass the test where you can *safely* operate a motor vehicle while at the same time you're talking on a cell phone, you get the license to do both.  If not, you have to give up one or the other.

No more of these pansy schmansy laws that simply outlaw driving and talking on a cell at the same time; no you're required to forfeit your driver's license or you give up the cell phone.

Seems easy enough.

What's with the bunk about Eagles fans rooting for players to get hurt?  Are there some bad apples in the bunch?  Of course.  Is it baseless and ignorant to conclude that all Eagles fans are a bunch of player-hating thugs?  Of course.

Also, there are certainly aspects of TO's personality I don't embrace (notably, his poor judgment in some of the comments he made about Garcia in the off-season), but to question his "integrity" seems to go a little far.  What has TO done to deserve to have his "integrity" impugned?  I don't think the TD celebrations merit that kind of attack.

Well when the whole stadium is cheering an injured player on the field, the bad apples appear to be spilling the cart.  Knowhatimsayin?

Ive talked with several Philly fans(obviously I havent spoken to them all), and to a fan, they all reveled in their reputation as classless asshats.  Doesnt mean they all are; doesnt even mean the ppl I was talking to are(Ive never seen the ppl I talked to at an actual game to judge their conduct for myself).  But they damn sure weren't doing or saying anything to dissuade me from believing it was true.

As far as his 'integrity' goes...hell I have no idea personally.  But I know good and well that TO knows exactly what kind of persona he presents to the outside(TV watching) world, and he revels in it.  Not exactly outside the realm of human nature to think the guy is an arrogant prick 24/7 when, at every opportunity he gets to change that perception, he simply reenforces it.

Believe it's called reaping what you sow.

EDIT: Besides all that Kurth, you're talking to ppl from Dallas...ya know the same place that has the Cowboys...the team Michael Irvin played for...the place where TO danced on the Star(yes it's capitalized).   Not a whole lotta love for that fool(or the Iggles) lying around down here.

Heard today on ESPN radio that Meyer will probably be taking the FL job.  Appears ND is unwilling to change how they do business(i.e. wants to keep their admission standards high...and good for them, that *should be* what college is about), and Meyer realizes he wont win a NC at ND.

Is that egg I see on the face of Touchdown Jesus?
22  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / BOO! Ty Willingham fired from Notre Dame on: December 02, 2004, 07:06:55 PM
JSHAW: yer right about a lot of those things you said.  Except that unless there are going to be 116 Div. 1 head coaching jobs opening up every year(or 115ish if we keep this BCS crap), second best HAS TO BE good enough for a lot of schools...Notre Dame included.  This isnt 1950 or even 1970 where ND can ride high on the achievements of Knute Rockne or Rudy.  Kids today, ESPECIALLY kids with designs on playing in the NFL dont give a good bob damn about ND's history, legacy, Touchdown Jesus, or the fact that they play Navy every year.

ND has some choices to make; they cant be both a football powerhouse and a stalwart academic institution...unless they wanna go join the Ivy League.  The 2 are mutually exclusive.  *NOT* because kids who are talented enough to play in the pros are stupid, but simply b/c many of them don't care about academic achievement like they care about improving their game and getting to the NFL.   By holding their academic and moral standards(we'll see about that last one) higher than the average 'state school', ND necessarily excludes themselves from going after many of today's top HS athletes.

Given that ND is, in today's college landscape, just another Rice with a past, ND cant realistically expect to do much better than what theyve been doing.  They could exhume Knute and prop him up with a stick on the sidelines, but they arent going to suddenly start winning NCs unless they get better athletes.

They had a, ahem, 'golden', opportunity to stick to their guns by sticking with Ty.  And given another 2 years, I think WIllingham would have ND regularly going 8-3 or maybe even 9-2.  I seriously doubt theyd be in the running for any NCs(though given their relatively static scheudle and opponents that tend to run hot and cold, you never know), but they'd be a good, quality football team who could still lay claim to demanding academics.

But no, they've shown themselves to be just like any other school, slogging around down in the slime that is Div 1A athletics.  Welcome to the party ND!  You'll fit right in('cept your football team will still suck   ).

25  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Sad state of MNF on: November 30, 2004, 04:55:14 PM
Youve got to factor in the salary cap thing as well.  Last night's game mightve been a whole different if Lewis was playing; but injuries are a fact of life in the NFL.  But where the salary cap kills teams is in their depth; most 2nd string guys *should be* 3rd stringers.  It's a rare team that can pull an Antowain Smith off their bench when their starter goes down.  And that showed last night; the Ravens had zero running game, and full well knowing that, the Pats can play pass defense and make a (likely) playoff team, look like a 5-11 one.

The NFL has put MNF in a tough spot; it's supposed to be the marquee matchup of the week.  BUt given that the NFL wants everyone to go 8-8, and (apparently) have playoff seeding determined by coin flips, it's almost impossible to predict who will be good when they set the matchups.  And even when they get it right, a key injury can send a very good team to sucking hind tit in a matter of weeks.

Err... you just called the Patriot's defense 'pretty vanilla'? And somehow the rest of what you said is supposed to be believable after that?

Actually, if you had watched the game, you would understand what I meant.  The Patriots didn't do anything fancy that game.  They rushed 3 and 4 men, with few blitzes.  There weren't many fancy schemes that day.  The Pats played the game pretty straight up, and Manning folded.  Law made some great plays, but Manning made some pretty bad rushed throws.  The Patriots were able to get decent pressure on him, but more often then not Manning got rattled.

I've seen the Patriots do some pretty crazy things, but in the AFC championship game they really didn't.  They played physical and hard, and rattled Manning.   The Pats offense also moved the ball fairly well, and put a bit of pressure on Manning to score.  Honestly, Brady could have done better and really put pressure on, but Brady threw a bad pick in the end zone.

The Patriots are a good defense, and can scheme with the best of them, but in a lot of cases, the Pats talent and the players knowledge of their assignments and football are what win.  Belechick is a great coach, but so are lots of others like Dungy.

Until Manning doesn't get rattled (choke) in big games, he can't really be considered the best.

Well you hit the nail on the head as to why the Pats won that game and the Colts didnt.  The Pats defense is good enough to get pressure on the QB without having to blitz.  If your front four(or 3 plus a LB) are good enought to generate pressure on the opposing QB, and you have a decent offense, most times in the NFL, you win.

You absolutely DON'T blitz the top-tier QBs in this league simply b/c they are too good, and theyll beat the blitz  So you hope your front 4 do the job, and drop 7 into coverage(usually giving you double coverage on almost every receiver in the pattern).  If they Pats had blitzed Manning, theyd have played into his hands by 1)admitting they were scared of him and 2)allowing guys like Harrison to end up in single coverage.  The Pat's coaches are damn good, and they know this stuff already.  THey also know theyve got some pretty good ballhawking players in their secondary.  So they get the best of both worlds; pressure with only 4 rushing the passer, and playmakers in the secondary who know theyve got backup if they decide to gamble and go for the INT.

Im not saying Manning didnt play well that game; he didnt.  But then neither did the rest of the Colts, and the Pats played a great game.  Hell they're the best team in the league, so thats not exactly unexpected.

Roger Staubach never did manage to beat the Steelers, but the dude is in the HOF.  Just b/c one team 'has your number'(and it wasnt even that, the STeelers were just better...just as the Pats are better than the Colts), doesnt mean you arent a great player.  To point to one game and say this is why this guy sucks, vs. a 7 year career body of work that says he doesnt, just doesnt hold water IMHO.

But then that's why sports are so much fun.   biggrin

Just give me Favre, over anybody else that has ever played football!!!!No player has ever done more with less.  20 TDs a year for 11 years, throwing to the most mediocre WR crew spanning that time.

I'd say the Iggles WR corps over the last dozen years or so, is the most mediocre.  At least on a contending team. THose fools sucked.

D. Driver now and S. Sharpe back in the day, are/were very good WRs.  No, they arent Moss or Owens or RIce, but they'd be/have been the #1 WR on a number of teams.   But as great as Favre is, and he is great, he's still only won one SB and that wasnt until he got....wait for it.....a RB and a defense!  Holy crap!   What a co-winky-dink!  Same goes for my all-time favorite, Elway.  Amazing what a T. Davis in the backfield and a defense that can stop someone every once in awhile, will do for an All-World QB.

Football is, BY FAR, the most team-oriented game going.  You dont have to look any farther than the Patriots to know that's true.  THeyve got solid talent all-around, a damn good coach, and a great leader in Brady.  But there are few, if any, superstars on that team and yet they still managed to win 2 SBs(while somehow missing the playoffs in between...but I digress).

It doesnt help the perception that QBs win and lose games all by themselves in a vaccum, when the "experts" fall all over themselves to ram that idea down our throats.  But then they are trying to appeal to the widest audience and make the game(and more importantly themselves and their broadcast) more accessible to the masses.  SO they boil a complex team game down to individual matchups and then tell us WR 'A' or QB 'B' is *THE* reason why Team 'C' is the winner.  It's simple-minded, disingenious, and pretty much a lie.  BUt then it's also smart marketing.

To say there are a half-dozen other QBs in the league that could put up Payton's #s in the Indy offense is 1)stating the obvious and 2)not much of a counter-argument that Peyton isn't a good QB.   All that does is point out there are other good QBs in the league(already knew that..thanks).

Btw, Marino never won a Superbowl either. Manning will.

That's a bold statement. He better do it this year because that Colts team is looking to get a whole lot lighter on offense with the FAs they have. We'll see what happens next year with no Edge, Harrison or both. I think they are both free agents after this year and Mr. October's salary doesn't allow them much room. A little upgrade on the other side of the ball might help too.

Unless Manning get's traded, I don't see any reason think he's on the road to winning it all any time soon.

Without even looking too hard I found 3 guys with better career TD/INT ratios than Manning: Brady, McNabb and Favre

Guess he throws a lot of picks too.

Emmitt Smith's TD/INT ratio is better than any of 'em AND he's won more SBs.

Guess that settles that.   Tongue

my only bitch is the length of the missions.  Yes I know about Time Acceleration(8x being the highest) as well as TIme Compression, which seems to be far, far slower than the Time Acceleration... :?

So is there any way to speed things up even more?  Combat Flight Simulator 2, which was MS' stab at doing the Pacific Theatre, had excellent 'warping', so why couldnt PF do the same?  It's really just not much fun staring at water for 20 min while I fly to the next waypoint.

Thanks again!

OK, Ive kinda had this problem for awhile now, but I just did a reinstall of XP and I figure while Im at it....

System specs:

AMD Athlon XP 3200
1GB PC3200 RAM
Win XP Home(SP1)
Radeon 9800
Asus A7N8X(ver 2.0) Mobo
SB Audigy
latest drivers for everying installed

Ive got an Athlon XP 3200 processor, but it only runs at 2200 mHz.  Ive tried d/l a tool from AMD's website to see if it can ID my processor, but because of my BIOS settings, the prog doesnt even recognize that I have an AMD processor.

My MOBO is an Asus A7N8X2.0 and Ive just installed the latest BIOS version, which is Rev 1010.  And in my BIOS settings I have everything set to either 'Default' or 'Optimal' meaning everything is as stable as it can be.  My MOBO, processor and RAM can all run at 200 mhz FSB(which is actually 400, but whatever) and Ive got it set that way.  My RAM is PC3200 and it reads that it is running at that FSB speed(as does my processor).  However, the multiplyer defaults to 10.5x which is why I get the reduced speed on my processor.  Ive tried setting it higher, but even at a multiplyer of just 11x, the comp wont even POST, so I have to reflash my CMOS and do it all over.

Any clues/tips/hints?  Or do I just have a borked processor?

Here's a tip: CHANGE THE DAMN CHANNEL!  Or better yet, if you're so concerned about your kid's future, sit down with them and point out piecemeal why DW is the latest Sign of the Apocalypse.  Instead of simply bemoaning its lack of morality(which is BS as anyone who has ever watched the show knows), use it as a teaching tool.  Ah, but that requires actually spending time with your kids, and well who wants to do THAT?!

Sorry, that bit had me on a rampage all night last night, and yall just get the backlash.   biggrin

Happy Turkey Day!
34  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Sigh, more evidence of video games 'causing' rape, violence on: November 25, 2004, 02:14:07 PM
WEll first off, as a gamer I too despise ppl, *especially* parents, who are too ignorant and lazy to lift their right index finger to a mouse and go searching for information on games.  Again, *especially* when those games are for their children.  IT's outrageous and just more fuel for the fire that says parenting cards might not be all that bad of an idea...

But I kinda agree with ole Joe that a video game that 'rewards' the player for assasinating Kennedy might be a bit over the top.  Sure, go ahead and make it, then slap it with an 'A' (Adult only) rating and watch the sales plummet(hopefully...with an 'A' rating they might just go thru the roof, heh). I certainly wouldnt support that kind of game, and I think it shows a distinct lack of class on the part of anyone who would A) make the game and/or B) buy it.  But that's just my opinion and we all know what opinions are like...

I wish games like that and Postal weren't made, but Id be being hypocritical if I thought they should be 'banned'(i.e. the gov't not allowing a certain game to be made or even distributed...wouldnt mind seeing restrictions placed on *where* it could be sold however, esp. if it comes with an 'A' rating).

I work in the Trauma ICU at the children's hospital in Dallas.   And last night after we heard about this, we just *knew* this kid would be coming to us.  I have to admit, that as awful as it sounds, Im glad I didnt have to see her(she died before she made it down to our hospital).  I really dont think that wouldve been something I wouldve handled well.

Of course I also think it's good she's in a better place, b/c what kind of awful life would it be living w/o your arms and with the knowledge that your mother, of all ppl, made you that way?
36  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / First half of Rivalry Weekend kicks off this Saturday! on: November 19, 2004, 06:35:36 AM

We've got like 3 'The Game'(s) going on: Cal-Stanford, Harvard-Yale, and OSU-Michigan(or is the Cal game 'The BIG Game'?).

Plus Alabama-Auburn, BYU-Utah, Kansas-Mizzou, and Im sure some others.

Unfortunately, outside of the OSU-Michigan game, I dont think any of 'em will be close(I honestly have no idea about Harvard-Yale, but then I dont think anyone who didnt go there cares either, so...).  And I think the Michigan game could be a blowout as well; UM is obviously the better team, but that series has a history of close games so Im not willing to dismiss that one.  THe 'Bama game might be a good one as well, but I dont think 'Bama's QB(Croyle) is back yet, and against that Tiger defense you've got to be firing on all cylinders if you hope to win.

Any thoughts?

You all finished the game   ??? WTF
you know what some of you people really have  to much time on your hands. drool I envy you all.

Or we work nights, and so while the rest of the world sleeps, we play.  Cause despite their name, 24 Hour Fitness ain't open 24 hours a day(least not by me), and with the g/f at work, what else have I got to do?

No you're right; I do have too much time.   biggrin

Oh and back on topic, the end was fantastic.  I had so much fun with those last 2 levels, I was laughing out loud almost the whole time.  ANd whiel I wish more questions had been answered, I still love the ending cause I know they'll answer those questions in HL3.   Just makes its inevitable appearance all the much sweeter.  ANd the G-man's appearance and dialogue were *PERFECT*.

Oh hells yeah!

Just finished, and the last 2 chapters are just friggin' great.   It's kind of like the first time you played Omaha Beach on MOH:AA only it just keeps on going and going...

Cant wait for HL3, but I sure hope it doesnt take another 6 years.  That would make Baby Jesus cry.
