I've had just a few issues here and there.  I, and many other people running 64-bit operating systems, can't seem to get Dragon Age to work very well as it sporadically crashes to desktop after playing for a while.  It's especially annoying to have this during a long cutscene that involves one or more fights, thus giving you no chance to save.  I'm on Vista 64-bit, with an Alienware M17x having 4GB Ram and 280M cards in SLI.  Strangely, other games by Bioware have not caused me any issues, so it's clearly something to do with the new engine in Dragon Age.

Just the joy of the PC. I played DA on Vista 64 and had no problems with crashes at all. I did have the DLC bug but that has nothing to do with the OS.

Can you play this single player or not? Will your partner be a bot? The articles aren't really clear.

it was a hit? it seemed most of the people here and at QT3 just yawned at best and many actively disliked it. I can't get enough rpg's and played the first one to finish. Can't remember a thing about it but I guess I liked it enough to finish.
604  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Hydrophobia on: April 28, 2010, 04:48:07 PM
I liked the graphics and overall idea. But those vids looked like a bunch of try and die stuff. It looked easy because of course the guy demoing it knew the pathways. Trying to swim to saftey and dying over and over until you find the correct door, ladder, etc, doesn't seem like a lot of fun to me.

just finished it up, luckily D6 wasn't that hard after I accidentally blew up a blob spawner and realized they could be taken out.  could have done without the quick time event lite moments at the end, and I youtubed the 'good' ending.  all in all it would have been a better game had they made it open like STALKER and not a straight up shooter.

606  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Metro 2033 on: April 26, 2010, 03:16:11 PM
wouldn't it have been cool to creep around the old ruined library perhaps finding some old reports that explained some of what happened or other interesting exposition? You could still have monsters pop out now and then. Instead, we get to run around like a maniac looking for the exit fleeing monsters that for all intents and purposes cannot be killed. Yech!

"Gothic has always been know for it's unpredictable story line."   Wait, what? the screenshots look okay, but I don't believe JoWood and these guys can pull this off. While I know lots of people have had major issues with Pirhana Bytes, the Gothic Devs, The games always ran fine for me. Gothic is one of my favorite series and I doubt these guys will have that magic.
608  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dead Space confirmed for PC(IGN hands on 9/8) on: April 19, 2010, 05:12:34 PM
Arise thread! The only bummer to my new plan of waiting til games drop in price is that the threads are often long dead by the time I play, unless I get a great deal like Metro 2033.
Just resurecting to say I am really enjoying this game. Great atmosphere and action. I like the rpg elements of upgrading your character, with choices always being a tradeoff. And this is the only checkpoint game that works! it must save automaticaly at some points as well as the save stations because I've had a couple of sudden deaths and been revived right before the scene. This game has been a joy to play. Too bad the sequel is console only.
609  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Metro 2033 on: April 16, 2010, 03:05:45 PM
Not to change this into a Dead Space thread, but..... I screwed up the save. I got the game as a budget title with no paper inside at all, just a disc. If it put the manual on my hd someplace I sure can't find it. It's okay I figured, it's jsut a 3rd person shooter basicaly, I can pick it up as I go along. I saw the camera icons on the map but I didn't realise I had to interact with them to create a save Roll Eyes. Duh. So today when I tried to reload all I got was no data. So I got to replay the first 15-20 min or so. At least I didn't have more time in.

Well, I certainly have a problem if I am under time pressure-dinner, family obligation, time to go to work, etc, and I don't want to start a level because I'm niot sure I will reach a save point and lose my progress. But that's minor and I will live with that. If I hit any sections where it makes me tear my hair out with repeats I will let you know.
613  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Metro 2033 on: April 14, 2010, 06:01:56 PM
Better than Metro? So no really hard sections that you had to repeat over and over again? I'm about an half hour in so far and I do like the set up.
614  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Metro 2033 on: April 14, 2010, 04:30:54 PM
I liked the interface, voice acting and graphics. It would be nice if headshots killed but I can live without it within reason and this mythos has a pretty good explanation of why the weapons are weak. But while the waypoint saves worked well 80% of the time, the 20% they didn't just made me bang my head into the desktop. And there were times I couldn't start a new level because I only had about 10 minutes to play and couldn't be sure I would hit a save by then. And now I've done it to myself again: Just started up Dead Space and found it is checkpoint save only. Bleah.

And, this is Ken Levine's new studio.

It seems a ton of people at many different sites have this confused. It has nothing to do with Ken's studio. These folks are the people on the West coast who made Bioshock 2. I'm not saying this means it will be good or bad, just that Mr. Levine has nothing to do with it.
616  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: EA & Starbreeze present Syndicate on: April 14, 2010, 04:09:43 PM
Funny, it's been so long and so many games inbetween that I hardly remember syndicate. I remember shooting windows and having them shatter was way cool. The sound effects were great and I hazily remember leading my squad around creating mayhem. I do remember it was one of the most fun games I have ever played.
617  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Metro 2033 on: April 13, 2010, 04:38:46 PM
Well I got through it.
Spoiler for Hiden:
turns out there was not too much game left after that. Also I finally got a hint that you can kill those nests and they will stop emitting blobs.

Very disappointing game. They had some cool ideas but decided on some very annoying game concepts. I would have loved to explore some of those tunnels and surface areas on my own with some weapons that were strong enough to kill something. Again, exploring the library could have been really fun, instead I spend my time running in terror from monsters that were hardly killable and I certainly did not have enough ammo to kill them all. I gather you were supposed to run. I prefer to explore ruins. For most of this game I felt like I was in a cut scene and just pressing keyes occasionaly. Come on GSC, crank out another Stalker soon please.

some help please.
Spoiler for Hiden:
I'm on D6 trying to get Miller through the section where these blobs come out of the ground and the walls and explode. Is there some trick or strategy I'm missing? I've tried like 20 times. Can't quite keep Miller alive. I've come oh so close twice. Arrgghhh!
619  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Elemental: War of Magic on: April 08, 2010, 10:42:27 PM
I saw somewhere that this is supposed to be out in 2010. Yet they still have 2 betas to go. Is there a release window and is 2010 still valid? I wasn't too excited about this till I watched Brads little playthrough. It seems like a game I would very much enjoy now. And that was just a rough idea. Most stuff was still placeholder.

I'm getting lazy I guess. Just went to the web site. They are still aiming for Sept 1. So Iguess it will be done by fall. The more I read about it the more I want it.
620  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Metro 2033 on: April 08, 2010, 06:57:07 PM
Thanks I found it. Good old slow Greg, I'm up to 14.5 hrs and I think I still have a ways to go. I sure get my money's worth. I'm still pretty frustrated with this game. Spooky areas that I would love to take time and explore, I have to trudge behind npc's. Yes they will wait around for me but it's not the same. Now I'm with Miller trying to get through the squishy acidic exploding balls and I can't keep the bastard from dying.
621  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Sniper: Ghost Warrior on: April 07, 2010, 09:00:05 PM
I'm in. Inevery game where I have the choice of a sniper rifle, that's what I pick. A whole game of sniping? That will be a first I think. I see what you mean about the draw distance but I can live with that. The cilvilians looked a bit like zombies but I will live with that too.

623  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Metro 2033 on: April 07, 2010, 03:19:38 PM
So there is a way on steam to see how long you have been playing a game? I'd like to see how much time I have in Metro. God this game is so close and yet so frustrating. I loved the creepy library, but then I had to spend most of my time there running like hell from monsters I couldn't kill. Anyway, I'm sure I'm going to go well over the 10-12 hrs everyone says is the game length.

alright, CoP officially runs nice and smooth... decided to start playing ruthless and gunned down those Stalkers you first run into with headshots to the back of the head.  too bad most of their equipment was crap and unsellable.
You can get the stuff repaired and sell it for a small profit, but it is a fair amount of effort for slight gain.

yeah, spend a few hundred to make a hundred.
No, that would be losing money. When I played the cost of repair was less than what I could sell the stuff for, just not very much less.

For me, just after the child level in Metro and having finishe SCOP. Metro C and barely hanging on to that: SCOP A+. SCOP made me mad when it was finished because I wanted the story to continue and there to be new places to explore.  Very few games do that to me.

I think I finally hit one of those annoying fights that cause a lot of re-loads.  It's above ground with Bourbon and you get rushed with a bunch of beasties and one of those winged things.  My machine gun is pretty much out of ammo (I must be finding lots of ammo for a gun I don't have yet) and the shottie is way underpowered against these guys.

That said the game sure looks purty in DX11.

I got it for $32 at gogamer and I think it's just barely worth that. I was expecting the underground tunnel and secret lab vibe of the stalker games and it's not that.Plus, although 90% of the time the checkpoints are spaced fine, the 10% they are not drive me insane.

Surprisingly I've been finding checkpoint save games less and less annoying in action games.

So you haven't found it annoying in Metro 2033? Just breezing through all the sections are you? Not having to repeat some areas a dozen times or so? Then you are much better at it than I.
632  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mafia II on: March 31, 2010, 03:38:05 PM
Oh crap! Just read the preview and these idiots are still doing checkpoints and not save anywhere. Is there some technical reason for this or do they just hate me? And Metro 2033 has me frequently pounding the desk in frustration with their checkpoints. Sigh....I will still get Mafia 2 as the first game is one of my favorites of all time, but come on, every game should have save anywhere.

If I were you knowing what I know now, if there is any other game out there that interests you, I would get that first. And I was so psyched for this game. Checkpoints and a high difficulty level just makes me repeat stuff over and over. And it's so scripted that even 4-5 hrs into the game I'm still mostly following a npc's lead and seldom doing any exploring on my own.

So, are the keys reprogrammable, or are you stuck with wasd?

Would this run on a 8600 Gt OC Top?

Or as usual, am I S.O.L. ?

I think you could run it on DX 9. on a lesser quality setting.

Arrrgh. I'm on level 4-war. trying to get past the point where there are two guys on a balcony-one behind a machine gun, numerous sandbags and many enemies behind them. Dieing and reloading over and over.
635  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Metro 2033 on: March 29, 2010, 05:27:07 PM
Not a bunch of posts so I wonder if people are as unhappy with this as I am. It's really hard in spots, the performance likes to tank when enimies appear-I guess I have to turn down some quality settings, and checkpoint saves have indeed caused me to repeat some stuff over and over. Mainly, hey devs, mind if I play your game for a bit? Too many scripted events where I just have to follow someone elses lead for the whole scene.

This lack of save anywhere is starting to piss me off now. Im having to clear out a large area full of folk with automatic rifles and snipers. Not being able to save when I've killed a bunch of them and then dying and starting over pisses me off to no end. I thought Devs had learned their lesson by now?

"So, What do you think of the new boss?" Just great getting to hear that conversation abouty 12 times. Here is where missing save anywhere is a pain. And no, it does not save your progress on each exit. It goes back to the last point you got the disc in the lower left corner.

Good point about needing a ton of boxes or a ton of swapping to test all the vc's. I understand, and did not say it would be easy, just that the way it is is annoying.

I know how you feel Greg, the 8800 GTX isn't all that old either (At least, it doesn't feel that way, I can still play new games that I care about in 1920x1200 and that's good enough for now), and it'd be nice to see hardware sites (I'm looking at you HardOCP) compare previous gen hardware against current gen hardware for those of us who are a bit more conservative in our upgrades...

Funny, that's my card and I can still play most games in 1680x1050. I knocked Metro down to 1280 though. And yes Hardocp is a major offender. Again, the Steam data shows the vast majority of cards out there are older.

It bumms me out that my card is old enough that it is no longer included in any bench marks. Bleah. I can play around with settings and figure out what works but they seem to drop cards quick. I wish they would look at Steam or something and see what cards most people play on. Then again, these hot hardware sites maybe figure only graphic whores who update every 6 months look at the hardware sites.
