41  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: New rig on: January 30, 2014, 08:14:03 PM
Thanks for the interest Tongue Took me 5.5 hrs to put it all together. The in Win case, while awesome, had a manual the consisted of 10 pictures with almost no words. Having never done this before, I struggled. The stuff I thought would be scary/hard, like putting the cpu in the socket and the fan on and the mobo lined up and in the case, turned out to be fairly straight forward. The hard stuff was all the case headers and fan wires and figuring out for sure where they plug into on the mobo. So the big moment comes, I power it up, it lights up and spins up and....the monitor stays dark. Ooops, I have the DVI cable hooked up to the mobo not the 770gtx. power down, move it, power up, and everything is golden. Get 7.1 64 bit installed, great. reload my stuff, well, some winds up all over the place but it's okay. Take out the ASUS disc and load the drivers, it says it will reboot the system several times in the process. All proceeds well until....the last reboot, where my USB ports all go away. ARRRGHH!!! Much research on the IPAD later, it's a known issue, bad USB driver on the disc. So how to get a new one in there with no M/K. Well, there is a PS2 port. I have an old PS2 keyboard at work. Bring it home, can't quite navigate the web with no mouse. So I get a PS2 splitter. Was sure I had the answer. Nope, devices didn't like the splitter, wouldn't work. So while staring at the windows log in screen with the mouse in the ps2, I see the "make windows easier" or whatever button in the lower left. Click on it, oh my, use windows without a keyboard. Boom, get to ASUS, load an updated driver, all fixed.

So far very cool quiet stable system. CPU at 30c at idle. Haven't stressed it yet, just about to start it.

Just played Far Cry 3 for an hr + on max. I happened to be in the middle of the game when I built the rig, wouldn't have neccessarily been my first choice, but it does look fun. CPU was 54C and GPU was 74. The 74 made me a tad urpy but looking on line it seems in line with norm. I think I'm good.
42  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: New rig on: January 28, 2014, 07:57:23 PM
Thanks for the help. No way am I looking to OC until I'm sure I have everything stable and back in place.
43  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: New rig on: January 28, 2014, 05:57:07 PM
so you just power up the computer and put the window disc in the drive right away?
44  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: New rig on: January 28, 2014, 05:41:35 PM
There is already an OS on the HD. It's a brand new MOBO so I would guess it's the usual order, USB, optical, HD.
45  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: New rig on: January 28, 2014, 01:42:33 PM
Parts are on the UPS truck and out for delivery!
Some more help please. I do have a non OEM version of Windows 7 I will be installing. I'm reusing my current HD. So what happens when I first power up? Will it ask for the OS DVD?
46  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: New rig on: January 28, 2014, 03:01:49 AM
I thought of that JCC, but I'm so on the fence. However, the only thing I really care about is playing games with the detail cranked, and OC'ing won't make much of a difference one way or the other. But then I think I have a K version for no reason.
47  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: New rig on: January 28, 2014, 12:50:24 AM
Goddammit, fine. Should have done this bit of homework earlier. All my parts are coming tomorrow. I hadn't ordered an aftermarket cooler because I hadn't done that part of the research yet. I had kind of settled on the Evo 212 or the silvertone arctic but going around today I discovered that nobody here stocks anything. Bestbuy is a sad joke. Two local shops turned out to be just repair shops that hardly stock any parts. Microcenter it is, but thats a 45 min drive with no traffic. As ugly as that is, I'm not sitting around for 2-3 days with all my parts waiting for a fan to come in.
48  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: New rig on: January 27, 2014, 06:23:10 PM
Yeah but since I have the "K" version I may as well push it a bit.
49  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: New rig on: January 27, 2014, 01:49:48 PM
Thanks for the tips!  Is the default cooler really that bad?
50  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: New rig on: January 26, 2014, 09:24:13 PM
Parts are coming Tuesday!!! Went with i7 4770K after all that. Found it at Microcenter for $279.   So looking forward to building my first rig. Famous last words. eek
Also got a free copy of AC IV.  Love the series. wouldn't have played it til 2015 when it hit my price point.

Eurogamer preview

Doesn't seem very encouraging.

Could be a fun game, it just won't be Thief.  Which is kind of a shame.

Far Cry 3. In the sweet spot now. I enjoy taking over bases and blowing things up with the RPG.

I'd go with the K version of the cpu, they are unlocked and easily overclock quite a bit on air cooling. My i5 2500k (3.3ghz) runs stable at 4.2ghz with just air cooling.

Do you just overclock in the bios? I've never tried to OC anything before.

Thanks Turtle!
55  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / New rig on: January 23, 2014, 02:53:05 PM
Parts that aren't listed here are being swapped over from my old rig as I'm-gulp- putting this together my self. Any thoughts/critiques are welcome:

Intel core i5 4670 Haswell 3.4 gigHz LGA 1150.
ASUS Z87-plus LGA 1150 Intel Z87
PNY VCGGTX 7702XPB-OC
G. Skill sniper series 8GB 2x4GB 240 pin DDR3 2400 desktop memory
Antec True power classic series TP-750c 750W 80 plus gold certified power supply
IN WIN GRone White .8mmm SECC steel ATX Full tower computer case.

I know it's all compatible and the PS may be a bit of an overkill. Just wondering if it looks like a decent set up.
56  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Intel i5 vs i7 on: January 22, 2014, 09:54:11 PM
Good Lord there is a great deal of debate on i5 vs i7 for gaming. Tons of people on both sides. I have no idea what to do. I don't like spending  for nothing but $100 over the life of the computer is trivial. Half the people say hyperthreading does not will not help in games, and the other half say you are crazy of course it does. I certainly don't need a beast machine I just want stuff to run smooth. Some even say hyperthreading can cause small microstutters. My head hurts. retard
57  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Intel i5 vs i7 on: January 22, 2014, 09:41:36 PM
Interesting points, Turtle. Made me rethink a bit. For $100, maybe I will just play it safe.
58  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Intel i5 vs i7 on: January 22, 2014, 08:11:26 PM
I don't know Turtle. I found a site-Puget computers I think- where they compared i5 to i7 rather extensively. They were pretty identical in terms of features and instruction sets except i7 had hyperthreading, which is more for multitasking and games don't use. At least that was my take away. I'm running a core 2 duo with a nvidia 460 so it's time to do something.
59  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Intel i5 vs i7 on: January 22, 2014, 03:51:53 PM
trying to put a system together with a reasonable budget. Going to actually try and build one myself. Research seems to show that the i5 4670 offers the best bang per dollar. But then I see the recommended specs for thief is an i7. I'm certainly not building a system for thief, but if games are already listing i7 in recommended, it makes me wonder if I would be hamstringing myself. Thoughts?

For veteran strategy game players, would you recommend the game be played on normal difficulty, or hard difficulty?

I would play it on hard. I played on normal and did not have much of a challenge until the last battle. Keep in mind it's a pretty linear game with check point saves so if you lose you pretty much have to live with the results unless you want to go far back.

Just ordered a new gaming PC last night, so I'm tapped out.

Whatcha getting Gratch? I've been pricing them out myself.

Not buying anything. All set with FC3 for a bit.

I got this system from Cyberpower PC.  They were having some really good sales for the MLK holiday, looks like they run through today. smile

I saw those sales. great deals. I'm just not quite ready yet icon_frown
That system should rock!! I heard the vc is somewhat loud, hope it's not that true in your case.
62  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Banner Saga on: January 20, 2014, 06:29:25 PM
Finished. Have to say I'm a tad disappointed. Should have stuck to my policy of not buying a game till it hits $10. The RPG portion of this was pretty sparse and over all it's been forever since I finished a game in 6 days. So it was way short. But I did enjoy myself while I played so it wasn't a waste by any means. And I give them credit for this as well: Easy mode was easy. I had tried the last battle on normal 3 times and couldn't beat it. Probably would have eventually but didn't want to. Easy took it right down. Nice.

The Banner Saga. Really getting into it now.
65  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Banner Saga on: January 16, 2014, 07:55:24 PM
I'm slowly falling in love with this. Was a bit disappointed at first as it seemed a lot simpler than I thought and mostly storytelling. But as you get into it nd are forced to make tough choices and trying to decide where to spend your upgrade points it gets a lot more interesting and I'm getting invested. Definitely not for twitch gamers or players with short attention spans, since I'm neither of those I'm having a lot of fun with it.
66  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (01/13) on: January 13, 2014, 01:27:16 PM
Pre bought the Banner Cycle and have it pre loaded. Excited about it.
67  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Weekend Playlist -- 1/10/14 on: January 10, 2014, 08:13:54 PM
YellowKing Dishonored is great. If you are finishing up then I'm sure you already know that.
I'm playing Far Cry 3 killing time before the Banner Saga releases on Tuesday. First gameday release I have gotten in forever. Having a harder time getting into Far Cry 3 than 2. Early yet. I can say I really hate the save system.
68  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Games Finished 2014 Edition on: January 08, 2014, 11:00:42 PM
Both Dishonored DLC. Okay, but shows the limits of DLC. Not enough time to develop the character and pretty short, especially Knife of Dunwall. But it was more of Dishonored, which is a good thing.
The Banner Saga.
Far Cry 3. took about 2 hrs to get into it for me. Really enjoyed the middle, then clearing the last couple of towers and forts had become somewhat boring. I did enjoy the game over all.
Castlevania-had to quit in the middle as it became impossible to finish with M/K. Bummer as I was enjoying it.
Metro Last Light- somewhat of a letdown. Did not like it as much as the first. Too relentlessly linear.
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Very fun. Exactly what I was looking for.
Shadowrun returns: Dead man switch. Fun game, a little short.
Enclave. Simple action RPG but for $1 I had a great deal of fun with it.
Two worlds 2 Pirates of the flying Fortress. More TW2 goodness!! 13+ hr DLC is a nice big slice as well.
69  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What Collector's Edition purchase do you regret most? on: January 01, 2014, 02:13:46 PM
It would have to be the only one I ever bought: Oblivion. I was just so into the hype for that game, and had been waiting for it to come out for what seemed like for ever. Then I never really looked at any of the stuff and just played the game. Taught me a lesson though, so it wasn't all bad.
70  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Weekend Playlist -- 12/27/13 on: December 29, 2013, 11:00:45 PM
I'd like to tell the Dev's that made FTL-very good game, but next time how about making easy mode, oh I don't know, easy? Without the lamo
Spoiler for Hiden:
3 stage very hard to kill can't save, probably can't repair boss fight at the end.
71  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Weekend Playlist -- 12/27/13 on: December 28, 2013, 03:08:52 PM
FTL and Dishonored DLC. FTL is very addictive. I haven't come close to winning yet, even though I switched over to easy. I am making progress though.
72  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/360/Ps3] Bioshock: Infinite - Impressions Incoming! Impressions pg 6 on: December 23, 2013, 03:50:24 PM
Lttp. Just finished the main game. Have to say I was rather disappointed. Relentlessly linear, hardly any upgrades to look forward to, and I never really got into Elizabeth. There just wasn't much to the combat either. I early on discovered blast with electric and then use burst gun and pretty much everything goes down. And the last big set piece battle was more annoying than anything else. The story never grabbed me either. Game was a letdown overall. And it was rather short.
73  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Games you are looking forward to in 2014? on: December 20, 2013, 05:57:42 PM
The Banner saga. I actually broke my self imposed $10 limit and paid $19.99 for the preorder because I liked what I heard about the devs and I really like the look and promise of this game. Can't wait for Jan 14th to get here!
74  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: 2013 GOTY/G.O.A.T on: December 13, 2013, 09:10:25 PM
I didn't play any of the bad ones. I only buy games on the cheap now and an added plus is I can avoid the duds. My game of the year would have to be Tomb Raider. Much better than I thought it would be. I think I had more fun this year with ME3 and Deus Ex, but those games are older.
75  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Weekend Playlist -- 11/22/13 on: November 23, 2013, 01:09:59 PM
Where is the Dishonored DLC on sale?
76  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Weekend Playlist -- 11/22/13 on: November 22, 2013, 07:49:33 PM
Finally playing Vampire: The Masquerade. Had the dreaded save bug so I got to play the starter dungeon 3 times but it's been smooth sailing so far. Only niggle I have is I never thought mighty vampires had to feed after every little battle but I think I'm going to enjoy this game. And for $2.50 you really can't beat it.
77  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Weekend Playlist -- 11/15/13 on: November 16, 2013, 03:16:49 PM
Finishing up Max Payne 3. While I hate the death in slow motion and lack of save anywhere, I enjoy everything else and they nailed the vibe of the series.
78  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekend Playlist - 11/08/13 on: November 08, 2013, 10:35:47 PM
Max Payne 3. Has the Max Payne flavor, but too many gotcha kills and no save anywhere. I do like the give you more bullet time and meds if you keep failing idea though. But dying often in slow mo is a pain.

Path of Exile. Very addictive, and free!

Dishonored.  Enjoying myself.
