Sob!!! My rig is down. Bad hard drive. No games for me this weekend. New drive and a reinstall. The opposite of fun.

Might be 2016 for me then. I don't buy a game till it gets to $10 on PC. It's fine. I still have plenty of fun stuff to play.

Venetica-which I got for free on a New Egg deal. Fun little RPG so far.

There's ways to improve it without resorting to arbitrarily locked animation systems. There's plenty of ways now to combine need for execution, without the clunky locked systems that those games employ.

You say clunky and I say brilliant.  Guess I am alone on wishing for a game that mixed Skyrim and Dark Souls.

You obviously got a good handle down on Dark Souls combat that gave you a fair amount of success. The game would be a blast if I could do that. There are other things they could do to help Skyrim and the other Elder scroll games. Get rid of the damn auto leveling. Get rid of the need to be able to go anywhere on the map from day one and have success. Have some very, very tough enemies that could only be defeated by high level characters having exotic equipment they either discovered through arduous quests or arcane difficult crafting. Bethesda, as has been said, are the only people who could make fighting a dragon routine and boring. But this would be a radical departure for the series and will never come close to happening. Also, they sell millions and millions of these games and print money so they have every right to tell me to shut up. Sounds like I hate the series but I don't. I play them through and complete all but the most obscure stuff. But each iteration has been a little less exciting than the last, and I do agree that combat could be a lot more exciting.

I'm recently replaying Skyrim (quit earlier due to bugs) and the world design is simply the best I have ever seen in any video game.  The combat system is lacking though (Bethesda just doesn't get it even after so many Elder Scrolls games).

Wouldn't it be awesome if Skyrim had Dark Souls combat? Or Dragon's Dogma combat, for that matter.

Not for us non twitch players it wouldn't. While I enjoyed most things about Dark souls I had to give up because I never got good enough at the combat.
128  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Official Review] Alan Wake on: May 31, 2013, 05:46:43 PM
Can't say about the motion sickness but I played the game last year and enjoyed it. It does use check points and a couple of areas can be frustrating but besides that I had a great time.
As to the price drop, it's mostly just old. Most games get cheap eventually.
129  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekend Playlist - 05/31/13 on: May 31, 2013, 04:33:22 PM
Had to give up on Dark Souls. To much twitch. I got the hang of it against run of the mill types, but they just keep upping the ante and it became not fun. So I went back to Game of Thrones. And back to fun, which is nice.

Dark Souls. Trying to find a way to beat the Black knights and the Gargoyle

Hey Glycerine, thanks for the reply. I guess Canuck just wanted to snark at me. While knowing my way around the computer a bit, I have to admit the DSfix directions had me a bit intimidated, so I'm trying to get along without it. Funny, what I thought was a bit of stuttering was the game trying to show me I was very slow as I was running around with 100 max of my weight-duh. Started a new character-bandit, and things are pretty smooth. I have never, ever touched a controller in my life, so starting now would be very awkward. I seem to be fareing okay with MK although I had to look up a lot of arcane controls. Thanks for the help.

I think I just discovered your problem.

care to expound on that? It was pretty much unplayable any other way.
133  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dark Souls Coming to the PC! on: May 20, 2013, 06:45:39 PM
Well be careful what you lust for, I guess. Waited for this to get under $10. People weren't kidding when they said this is hard. Man do I suck. And I am repeating a lot, just without the reloads. But I'm also hooked on the stupid thing and really can't stop playing. I don't think I have ever played a game this relentless.
The 30 fps cap is also annoying. Yes I have read up on the fix but it sounds kind of complicated and not without it's own problems. So I set mouse sensitivity to zero and got used to the rest of it. Don't know if I can hang with the whole thing, but I probably will. I let out cheers when I get through some of the nasty parts.

StiLL with checkpoints....sigh.  According to reviews soMe of them are brutal as well. Wish I knew why this was necessary. NoT a deal breaker for me, just frustrating.

Folks are in town this weekend, so gaming is pretty much out of the picture.  Not to mention that I'm in the middle of moving my stuff between apartments.  Stairs suck.

Wow-tough weekend for you!

I started FEAR 3 this week, but I'm not having a lot of fun. pretty bland and seems like it's just whack a mole. No save anywhere is really annoying as well. I'm going to fire up Game of Thrones instead. I think that's more in my wheelhouse.
137  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Weekend Playlist -- 4/26/13 on: April 28, 2013, 11:19:21 PM
I can second Jaysemon's opinion as well. Really enjoyed LA Noir as well. Never got tired of driving around 1950's LA. It was fun solving all the crimes. I thought the game was well done.
138  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Weekend Playlist -- 4/26/13 on: April 26, 2013, 12:31:22 PM

139  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/360/Ps3] Dead Island Riptide on: April 23, 2013, 05:25:34 PM
Shaqnews just gave this a terrible review. For basically all the stuff from the first game that he didn't like. I have to say the complaints are valid. The map is frequently not very accurate in terms of paths and quest markers. There are a lot of cheap deaths in the game and you don't dare stand up to mobs. I know the ram guys from the first game drove me crazy for a long time. But if you don't fear the mobs then to me you have no tension at all. Games that are super easy to me are not as fun. While I recognize all the negatives, they didn't keep me from enjoying the game.
140  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Evil Within on: April 22, 2013, 06:27:47 PM
Good point. Never played SS but in SS2 those darn chimp noises were pretty scary especially in the early levels.
141  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/360/Ps3] Dead Island Riptide on: April 22, 2013, 03:05:47 PM
While I understand all the negatives listed and admit they are all fairly accurate, I really enjoyed the first game. It looks like Riptide is more of the same. In that case I'm sure I will have a blast playing this as well, as soon as the price drops into my range.
142  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Bethesda's new game project on: April 19, 2013, 06:39:51 PM
I played Amnesia. That was pretty creepy. Being a powerless character didn't help either. Fun game.
143  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Bethesda's new game project on: April 19, 2013, 05:32:48 PM
I don't know if a game has ever "scared" me. I'm PC only and have never played the Silent hill game. I liked the good Clive Barker game but it didn't scare me. I've been startled by monster closet stuff back in the day, but not scared. Dead space was creepy. Maybe I'm splitting hairs.
144  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Weekend Playlist -- 4/19/13 on: April 19, 2013, 03:24:02 PM
Wife has preconfirmation duties with her Goddaughter this Sat. so I should have lots of free time with Deus Ex HR. Once I became used to all the systems and how the game works, it's a great deal of fun. I'm sure I'll head right to the DLC when I'm done. Only downer is the AI. Usually if you run around the corner to another room in the middle of a firefight they can't follow you.
145  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekend Playlist - 04/12/13 - Tax Day Edition on: April 12, 2013, 04:28:22 PM
Deus Ex Human Revolution. Really enjoying this but apparently it's been a long time since I played a difficult game. I'm dying a lot. And trying to find stuff using the map just had me flummoxed in China. But I'm getting the hang of it and having fun in the process.
146  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/360/Ps3] Dark Souls 2 on: April 11, 2013, 04:55:58 AM
Wow. I'm actually intimidated to try DS1 and that video didn't help much. It would not be fun to just have to die and reload  100's of times. Still, I'm intrigued enough that when DS1 hits my price point I will get it immediately.

and done.  pretty fun game.  at some point, maybe next year, I'll replay the game to pick the choices I didn't take.

I wonder what direction the DLC will take.

I have said this in the past, like Witcher 2, and the ME games, and Fallout 3 NV and yet, I have never gone back. There is always something new and shiny waiting.

Since I finished Kingdoms of Amalur yesterday it was going to be FEAR 3, but it would hang every time in the opening video. A hard crash that made me reboot the rig. Then trying to verify the file on steam also hung up. So I hit uninstall. Have to try and redownload it to see if my download was corrupted. But decide to change up and am downloading Deus EX Revolution from Steam.

looked awesome to me. Thought it had all the elements. This game could make me break my not paying more than $10 for a game rule.

Kingdoms of Amalur. Got my skills upgraded so I can see where all the statues are on the map. Had a blast running around finishing all the ones I missed. Probably have around the last 25% of the world map to finish.
151  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Old school Dungeon crawl: 'Legend of Grimrock' on: March 27, 2013, 06:00:11 PM
While I loved the gameplay and graphics and the storyline, the puzzles were just too hard and I was lost. Had to play the second half of the game looking up solutions on line. If the LoG 2 is that hard, I'm out.
152  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Assassin's Creed 4,next year? and with Co-Op? on: March 25, 2013, 06:39:00 PM
Looks great to me! But I'm a fanboy of the series. Haven't played AC3 yet because it hasn't reached my price point, but I really liked all the others. And I really like the pirate setting.
153  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Weekend Playlist -- 3/22/13 on: March 22, 2013, 06:24:46 PM
Still playing through kingdoms of Amalur. Still enjoying it. Getting a bit close to the end, last cities over to the right anyway.

As has been pointed out elsewhere, he presided over Warhammer online, SWTOR, and the fact that Origin on line has not made a dent in Valve. 3 pretty big failures.

Still playing Kingdom of Amalur. Lots of content in this game and bug free so far. Not the most thrilling game I've ever played but it is fun.
157  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Weekend Playlist -- 3/8/13 on: March 08, 2013, 06:43:56 PM
Kingdoms of Amalur. This game is solid in all areas but not terribly exciting. Still, I'm always hooked on these skill tree games. I always want the next skill.
158  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: So are micro transactions the wave of the future? on: March 03, 2013, 01:04:03 PM
It seems like it is but not for me. I'll never pay one. I think if there comes a day where I can't find a single game that I enjoy without micrtransactions, I'm done with the hobby. But I don't think that will happen.
159  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: System Shock 2 is returning! on: March 02, 2013, 03:20:45 PM
No wonder I got stuck so near the end. That body of the Many level was just brutal. Had to turn the difficulty down to easy to get the final brain thing down. But at least I finished. Always bugged the crap out of me that I never had. The early creepy levels were some of the finest moments in gaming, imho.
160  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Weekend Playlist -- 3/1/2013 on: March 01, 2013, 05:47:05 PM
I'm right at the final battle in SystemShock 2, so I will finish that in 15-20 minutes. Then it's on to Kingdom of Amular.
