Continuing with Lords of Xulima. Bard has an insta death song now. Yet I still have fights too tough to try yet. Want to start Witcher 3 but dislike playing two games at once.
2  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/XB1/ps4] The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on: May 19, 2015, 09:52:23 PM

I was doubtful about how things would run on my comparatively modest 2600K i7 processor and Nvidia 780 graphics card, but at least in the early areas, the game seems to maintain a completely solid framerate well above 30.  It's easy to tell because lowering the framerate limiter to 30 diminishes the smoothness of all the animations, particularly during combat.

The one setting I'll definitely be keeping off is the Nvidia GameWorks Hair.  It looks pretty amazing, even just on Geralt, but single-handedly lowers the framerate by at least 15 fps.  Maybe more.

Wild Hunt looks shockingly good, especially during dialogue sequences where I get so engrossed in looking at the character details that I get distracted from what they're saying.  It's enough to make me wonder if it can possibly maintain this level of detail throughout.  The Witcher 2 held the award for the best looking game I'd ever seen for many years after its release, but that had the luxury of discrete maps where the designers could lavish detail onto everything.  It'll be interesting to see if Wild Hunt can wow me this much as I move beyond the starting areas.

The one concern I have is that the combat feels almost weightless so far, with the only feedback I get on the success of my swings measured in whether or not the enemy's lifebar shortens.  My sense is that the sound effects for a successful strike are simply too subtle, lacking the force and gristle you get from melee combat in something like Bloodborne, Dragon Age: Inquisition, or Arkham City.  Even Skyrim, with relatively simplistic mechanics, has a satisfying crunch when you hack something with your sword.  I may try adjusting the sound balance to see if it makes a difference.

Should I just assume you are playing at 1080? My specs are similar to yours so I would like to know. No offense, but I see so many posts about frame rate without saying what they are playing it at. Should I be just assuming 1080 unless otherwise noted?

Added this to last weeks thread by mistake. Was going to try and wait for price drops on Witcher 3 but yesterday got the "last chance" pre sale from gog. It just made me pull the trigger. I'm still going to finish Xulima before I start W3. I am loving Xulima.

 The Witcher 3. Downloading now.

Lords of Xulima for me. Man this game hits all the right sweet spots for me. And though the graphics are simple, it still has great atmosphere. It's tough, but so far pretty fair.

Loved that game.

No. Clouds of Xeen was 5&6 which you could combine, if I remember correctly.

Pillars of Eternity.
9  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Pillars of Eternity on: April 06, 2015, 03:39:58 AM
I'm enjoying the game but I'm a little disappointed in how gated it is. You damn well better do things in the relative order they want you to or you will be party wiped. It's okay once I figured it out, but I like a bit of random exploration better. And no experience for killing things after the first encounter seems odd. But, these games must be really hard to balance and how the hell do you have a plot with interesting party members if you can go where ever whenever, so I get it.

I had fun with DA:I overall. The only thing that annoyed me was the walk 5 feet and there is another, collectable, etc. Especially at the start. Made it hard to keep focus.
11  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Pillars of Eternity on: April 02, 2015, 11:00:45 PM
Wow! What a difference. Much more enjoyable for me now. Even though I was loving the game before.

Anybody wish combat was just a bit slower? I feel like I issue orders, play it out for 5 sec, pause, order, repeat. It would be nice if it could breath a little bit.
Have you tried clicking on the slow combat arrow to the left of the circle in the center of the screen?  I wonder if that would help?  There's also an option that will enable slow mode just for combat.

I have not tried either. I will look for that next time I play. Thank you.

Gratch, hope you feel better soon. I hate being in that space where no game grabs you.
I'm slogging away at the King's bounty Warriors of the North expansion. Your troops actually level up, which is kind of fun. Still going through the origional content though, they must have put the new stuff at the end. icon_evil

This is from the same team that did Nehrim for Oblivion. I must say I had way more fun and interesting quests and stories from Nehrim than I ever did from a Bethesda game. It's due out this year. An entire new massive game for free. I'm stoked.http://sureai.net/projects/enderal/

I must say this is the first completely new never before heard news I've gotten from PC Gamer mag in years.

King's bounty dark side. Not really feeling it yet, stuck with a feeling of more of the same, but it may just be me. Sticking with it for now.

all the gameplay and exploration sections run at a solid 60 fps on Ultra-everything

What hardware do you have?  I have a i5 2400 with a GTX 770 card and 8 GB of ram.  I am not seeing 60 FPS on Ultra everything at all.  I have to knock shadows to Medium and turn off the MM something antialiasing while setting the other AA to low to get around 60 FPS in non open areas.  In the Hinterlands I get about 30-40 while battles are going.  I honestly thought my hardware would do better with the game.

Did you install the latest nvidia drivers? According to the in game benchmark I picked up about 8fps min and max. I have an i7 and a 770 and 8gb of ram. getting a pretty consistent 45 fps with the mm turned off.
Sure wish I could minimize some of the hud stuff though.

Haven't had a chance to look at the manual yet. Is there any way to disable that lame quest notice in the upper right screen? Or is it maybe/hopefully an intro section thing?

Downloaded this today. Works as advertised. Took me a while to figure out it was under the 3d tab and down a bit on the nvidia control panel. After all that, didn't like it on Inquisitor. Made the text and characters too small. Will try it out on other games for sure though.

The puzzles in the first game really turned me off after a while. Last third of the game I needed a walkthrough to get anywhere. Bummed me out because I liked most of the game otherwise. I agree the sequel does look pretty.

One of the most frequent complaints Iíve seen is that the save points are really spread out.  Iím waiting to see if PC patches/moders can add in the option to save anywhere or at least put in some additional check points.  You can argue that checkpoints add to tense atmosphere of the game all you want but I donít have the time to deal with that silly nonsense.

I'm not too excited about this either, especially if you narrowly escape death and then have to do it all over again because you couldn't save.

+1 exactly. It would suck all the fun out for me.
32  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: So...those 900 series graphics cards on: September 28, 2014, 04:40:26 AM
Well.....Bethesda just announced that they recommend 4gb vram for "The Evil Within."  Which sort of makes me urpy as I bought a 770 with 2GB last year. But I suppose it depends on what res you like to play at and how much antialiasing you have to have. If you want to be ultra and game in 4k, probably need 2 new cards in SLI. I'm perfectly happy with 1680@1050 so I believe I'm okay for a while.
33  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Another video card question on: September 14, 2014, 02:28:31 PM
looks like a geforce 750 TI would be a good choice. here is a Tom's hardware page that gives you some options.
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-3.html

All mainstream cards use PCI-E now. While I believe they are up to PCI-E 3 now, any PCIE card will fit in any pcie slot, it just won't take advantage of the extra bandwith the latest slots offer. But with what you are running, you won't even feel it.  hope this helps.

I really enjoyed the Two World games but to each his own. I just finished TW2 DLC and then went looking for the next project from Reality Pump as I like their stuff. So I found Sacriligium but what concerns me is it's been in developement for a long time, and no news has been posted on the site linked since 2012. So I don't know if it's still alive or not.
