No manual that I know of. AC has always been kind of crappy for that. There are decent wikis around if you google that. While I am by no means an expert, I am far along in the game now and believe I have figured out how most things work. And other people here know much more than me I'm sure. You should be able to get any question answered.

I have a lot of DVR'd shows to catch up on, so not as much gaming as usual. But I will be plodding along in AC Black Flag. trying to get enough metal to fully upgrade my ship so I can blast the bottom third of the map. It's kind of a slog.

To the Steam wishlist it goes!  Bring on the eventual absurdly good sale prices!

Thanks for reminding me! That's exactly what I need to do. When it hits $10, I'm there.

I still don't get all the Bioshock Infinite hate, most of which I've heard from press. It was my GOTY last year and I couldn't stop playing it once I started, and pondered the ending for days after I completed it.

I certainly didn't hate Infinite; I enjoyed it and played it to completion. I think the problem was unrealistic expectations from the audience.  The original Bioshock was one of those games where everything just clicked, and the whole was greater than the sum of its parts.  Infinite's "parts" were all well done and polished to the nth degree, but it never transcended those parts like the original did.  And I think that's what most people were expecting; which is kind of like asking lightning to strike twice.  Even the best developers can't hit a grand slam each and every time, but Levine's track record has been stellar and most gamers expected he could simply do it again.  He came damn close, but Infinite didn't have that certain je-na-sais-I-don't-know-what that his previous Shock games had.

I think this is a fair description of how I felt. While the individual parts were well done, they never really came together for me.

I'm likely alone in my opinion, but I felt the Bioshock games were a bit overrated. For sure they deserved to be ranked excellent, but IMO not AAA status in the 90+ percentile range. I'm not convinced another talented lead and dev team can't match what's bee done so far with the series. I feel bad for the staff who lost there jobs and hope they get picked up quickly by other studios.

I think the first Bioshock I'd call excellent. It was different in a very fun way from just about everything else I'd played and I was totally entertained by it. But BS2 was not up to that and I just played BS infinite a couple of months ago and didn't like it at all.
So mostly I agree with you.

I find myself enjoying this. Still learning all the systems a bit. So one of the first treasure maps I found, with the group of three palm trees? Why did they draw the big shipwreck on there if that wasn't part of it. I'm sailing all the hell over the area because I'm not sure how close or far it could be from the actual co-ordinates looking for a wrecked hull. Duh. Had to look up on line. At least now I know to ignore that stuff.

haven't seen that before Forge, but that's exactly the case in Dark Souls.  If you think there isn't any feedback to tell you what you did wrong, you just aren't looking at it.

People are too used to hand holding and/or on rails gameplay that any time the screen doesn't flash 'YOU DIDN'T PRESS THE X BUTTON FAST ENOUGH, TRY AGAIN' they seem to miss it or just assume it's too hard and move on to another game.

Honestly Harkonis, I find this remark condescending and obnoxious. I've been playing these games for 25 years and I don't need hand holding or rails. DS just got to a point for me that it wasn't fun and I don't need people telling me I'm doing it wrong or I don't get. It's a great game for players that it clicks for. But there are a great many people for whom it didn't.  I'm sure you didn't mean anything by it, but I don't think that's the best way to express it.

Then say it didn't click for you in the first place instead of saying the game doesn't provide feedback, which it actually does in most cases.

It didn't click for me because it didn't provide enough feedback, for me. Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. And I'm not alone in thinking that.

I am pretty sure you mean 1680x1050. smile

I would guess most people who buy high end video cards are rocking at least a 1080p (1900x1080) or higher resolution. I would think your card will be more than good for quite a while. I think the current "sweet spot" for price vs performance is probably a 760. (I stare forlornly at my nearly 6 year old gaming pc with a 460 in it....)
There is my dyslexia again Tongue

Yeah, a 460 is what I replaced.

Turtle I'm with you. There was seldom enough feedback for me to learn enough to progress at a steady rate. But Dark Souls has divided people like this from the onset.

As you learn to the play the game that happens less often as well.  The game teaches you to be cautious and alert to your surroundings.  Usually if you die, outside of a boss fight, it's because you've gotten careless.

I would say I got about 30% of the way through and never quite got to that point. And then some of the bosses seemed impossible. It really bummed me because I wanted to love it but it just got to be too much work, for me anyway.

Just wanted to say my i7 4770K and PNY GTX 770 with 8 gigs of Ram on an Asus Z87-plus board is working very nice. Playing AC-BF maxed, even if "only" at 1650x1080 is perfectly fluid and whisper quiet. All I could have asked for. Nice to not have to worry about game specs for a while.

Nice to see you are happy with it. I just put in my order for my new rig, same processor and motherboard but a GTX 780 video card instead. I also went with the 750 watt power supply. And I broke down and got a 480GB SSD for the OS and games, the rest on the HDD. Now I just have to wait a couple of weeks...  Roll Eyes

20  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: radeon or NVIDIA ? intel or AMD ? (New PC) on: February 08, 2014, 03:48:28 PM
I just put a rig together myself 2 weeks ago. Intel has the inside track for CPU's and has for a while. Best bang for the buck is an i5. It's the same as an i7 without hyperthreading and there is a good deal of debate weather games in the future will make use of that or not.  While it seems AMD is better at the top end for gpu's, I have heard they run hot and loud. That said somebody here just put one in and I haven't seen any complaints so far. I got a Nvida GTX 770 and finished up Far Cry 3 on max and started AC Black Flag maxed with no issues and very quiet. Ram you are fine with 8 for the forseeable future. One thing with Cyberpower. I looked up reviews on the base mobo they use in most of their middle and cheaper builds. It had really terrible reviews across the board. Not sure how relevant that is, just be careful.

That trailer was awesome. Maybe one can say the graphics are okay but not cutting edge, but that's about it. Nothing in that looked cramped to me. I know you can make trailers to be deceiving, but that looked like a lot of fun to me. I think though, that the negative people already have their knives out and will probably savage the game no matter how it plays.
22  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Annual Installments discussion on: February 04, 2014, 04:11:01 PM
Seems lame to me. I burned out on CoD a long time ago. The only yearly franchise I play is AC. And sine I wait for the price to hit $10 on sales it's usually 1.5 yrs or so between games. I will play 3 and 4 close together this year since I got 4 for free with my new video card. I love RPG's enough that I would probably play those as soon as they come out but for a whole host of reasons they don't do those yearly. It really does surprise me that people buy sports games every year.  Only thing I would think you would need would be current rosters. Scanning reviews it doesn't seem like they improve the game in terms of making them more realistic every year.

I guess I should add flight sims. I really want to like them, but it takes so long to learn how to fly. With my new rig I just dl'ed the free version of Rise of Flight. Tried for about an hr to get through the first lesson(flying in a straight line through rings) and still get in spins and crash repeatedly.

God I can never get enough RPG, I finish them all!

I wish I could get into multiplayer for BF4 or COD. But all the talk of snotty teen players, cheaters, and dying repeatedly within seconds keep me away from it. ARMA as well.

I do intend to get into Crusader Kings at some point, but the tutorial was somewhat intimidating.

Thanks for the interest Tongue Took me 5.5 hrs to put it all together. The in Win case, while awesome, had a manual the consisted of 10 pictures with almost no words. Having never done this before, I struggled. The stuff I thought would be scary/hard, like putting the cpu in the socket and the fan on and the mobo lined up and in the case, turned out to be fairly straight forward. The hard stuff was all the case headers and fan wires and figuring out for sure where they plug into on the mobo. So the big moment comes, I power it up, it lights up and spins up and....the monitor stays dark. Ooops, I have the DVI cable hooked up to the mobo not the 770gtx. power down, move it, power up, and everything is golden. Get 7.1 64 bit installed, great. reload my stuff, well, some winds up all over the place but it's okay. Take out the ASUS disc and load the drivers, it says it will reboot the system several times in the process. All proceeds well until....the last reboot, where my USB ports all go away. ARRRGHH!!! Much research on the IPAD later, it's a known issue, bad USB driver on the disc. So how to get a new one in there with no M/K. Well, there is a PS2 port. I have an old PS2 keyboard at work. Bring it home, can't quite navigate the web with no mouse. So I get a PS2 splitter. Was sure I had the answer. Nope, devices didn't like the splitter, wouldn't work. So while staring at the windows log in screen with the mouse in the ps2, I see the "make windows easier" or whatever button in the lower left. Click on it, oh my, use windows without a keyboard. Boom, get to ASUS, load an updated driver, all fixed.

So far very cool quiet stable system. CPU at 30c at idle. Haven't stressed it yet, just about to start it.

Just played Far Cry 3 for an hr + on max. I happened to be in the middle of the game when I built the rig, wouldn't have neccessarily been my first choice, but it does look fun. CPU was 54C and GPU was 74. The 74 made me a tad urpy but looking on line it seems in line with norm. I think I'm good.

33  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: New rig on: January 28, 2014, 03:01:49 AM
I thought of that JCC, but I'm so on the fence. However, the only thing I really care about is playing games with the detail cranked, and OC'ing won't make much of a difference one way or the other. But then I think I have a K version for no reason.
34  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: New rig on: January 28, 2014, 12:50:24 AM
Goddammit, fine. Should have done this bit of homework earlier. All my parts are coming tomorrow. I hadn't ordered an aftermarket cooler because I hadn't done that part of the research yet. I had kind of settled on the Evo 212 or the silvertone arctic but going around today I discovered that nobody here stocks anything. Bestbuy is a sad joke. Two local shops turned out to be just repair shops that hardly stock any parts. Microcenter it is, but thats a 45 min drive with no traffic. As ugly as that is, I'm not sitting around for 2-3 days with all my parts waiting for a fan to come in.

I'd go with the K version of the cpu, they are unlocked and easily overclock quite a bit on air cooling. My i5 2500k (3.3ghz) runs stable at 4.2ghz with just air cooling.

Do you just overclock in the bios? I've never tried to OC anything before.
