punisher, that idea always scares me. Only time I ever do a clean install is when something breaks icon_biggrin  Or this last time when I actually built my own rig. That was fun! Until the MOBO drivers that came on the DVD from ASUS were corrupted and loaded then turned off all of my USB's. Considering my keyboard and mouse are USB it took me a while to figure out how to get back in to fix it.
2  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: SSD's on: June 19, 2016, 06:34:03 PM
I think if I just want the OS on it the Intel 730 240GB should be fine, Yes?
3  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: SSD's on: June 18, 2016, 04:29:32 PM
Thank you AK for the good advice as always. So what are the best steps to proceed? This will probably seem stupid, but I have never done anything like this. I assume I have to take the OS(7pro) off of the existing drive and then reinstall from the CD onto the SSD? Am I close?
4  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / SSD's on: June 11, 2016, 05:19:55 PM
So I'm thinking about getting one but I'm not sure how I would organize things. Would I move my OS over to the new drive? How difficult is that to do. And should it just be my OS or my OS and my current game. Obviously not room enough for all my games. Or should I leave my OS on the regular HD and just have my current game on the OS? Asking for opinions.
5  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: I'm building a new PC for first time 15 years on: June 01, 2016, 03:49:36 PM
So how long do you plan on keeping/using the 1080p monitor? Because at that res, you won't notice a difference between the 1070 and 1080. 4K would be a different case. If you will use 1080 for a couple of years, stick with the 1070 because something better than the 1080 2 yrs from now.
6  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: I'm building a new PC for first time 15 years on: May 28, 2016, 12:09:01 AM
Are you waiting for the partner boards? You can get nvidia's board now but it is vanilla. I think the other boards will be a tad better.
7  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: weird artifact on: March 30, 2016, 08:13:56 PM
hopefully it will never come back, but of course it probably will. I will see if I can do that if/when it does.
8  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: weird artifact on: March 26, 2016, 12:20:27 AM
Well, according to two stress/test programs I ran the vram is fine. I wounder if the DP cable gets a bit loose? Hasn't come back since the last episode.
9  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: weird artifact on: March 24, 2016, 01:17:13 PM
Thank you so much! I will look into that. It had not come back until last night. In spades. More artifacts and the text was blurry. I had 20 min before I had to leave. I whipped out my old monitor and hooked it up. It came on and was perfect. I thought I had the culprit. However when I hooked up my new monitor again it came on perfect and is still fine as I type this. So I still don't know what's going on.
10  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: weird artifact on: March 12, 2016, 07:46:14 PM
Don't remember the exact hr but it was near 10pm on Thursday. Only thing close to that time is a "cap12" error. Looking that up it seems unrelated. So far it still has not returned. Fingers crossed.
11  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: weird artifact on: March 12, 2016, 04:20:15 PM
I was on the driver from October when it started. I downloaded the latest one and the issue persisted. I've used it for 2 days now with no issues. It still unnerves me though.

Had my new upgrade since November. Acer 4K G-sync monitor and a MSI GTX 980 to power it. Has worked like a charm till last night. Was playing Sunless sea and suddenly got 3 vertical stripes the full height of the screen. The center one moved with the center of the screen. So I quit, restarted the game, still there. Still there on the desktop as well. Fired up 3 other games, still there. Checked the temp and it was 30C. CPU was also 30C, so it wasn't that. Checked the fans and had a moment of panic when I saw the GPU fans weren't spinning. But I quickly discovered it was because the GPU was at 30C-duh. When I switched to manual I could spin the fans right up. I have not overclocked the card. I even installed new nvidia drivers. Rebooted the computer-still there. Shut down the computer and unplugged it. Brought it back up and it was still there. It was late at night so I just turned it all off and planned on testing different monitors and card today, but when I fired it back up this AM it was all gone. Any thoughts as to why it was going on? Sorry if I was to wordy.
13  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Displayport question on: December 17, 2015, 05:13:29 AM
Do you believe the idiots @ Acer put the wrong cable in the box of their 4k masterpiece monitor? That only has display port out, btw. Once my research showed me the cable hadn't been redone I just went out and bought one. Of course, the connectors look nothing like the thing Acer had in the box. I'm very much in love with 4K now and my single 980 runs things just fine.
14  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: 4K gaming on: December 05, 2015, 04:36:14 PM
I love 4K gaming. My gts 980 can run it with games maxed so far. Newest game I have tried is AC Syndicate. It really makes a nice difference and is also great at all the non-gaming stuff. I still doubt I would have paid regular price for the GPU and the monitor but black Friday was awesome. Bet they have sale prices around Christmas as well. No dead pixels on the 280HK. There is some light bleed around the edges. I don't notice it while gaming, but can a bit while surfing. Just reading on line that it comes with brightness maxed and turning it down helps. It's not a deal killer for me by any means. I went from 1680 to this and the change is quite startling and fun.
15  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4, XB1, PC] Assassin's Creed Syndicate on: November 29, 2015, 04:10:09 PM
Thanks for the heads up AA. Didn't mean I was going to play it before Syndicate. I don't even own it yet. Guess I'll wait till it's $5 and play it then for completeness sake.
16  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4, XB1, PC] Assassin's Creed Syndicate on: November 29, 2015, 01:23:33 AM
Just got a new gtx 980 to go with my 4K monitor so I get Syndicate for .99. Looking forward to it. Enjoy the series. Haven't played Unity yet.
17  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Displayport question on: November 28, 2015, 11:43:35 PM
AAARRRGGGHHHH!  So I come home with my shiny new Acer 4K monitor. It's going to be powered by a gtx980 but it's not here yet. I thought I would hook it up to my current gtx770 just to see how it looks. I cannot get the displayport cable to attach to the gpu. Have they updated the displayport since the 770 was released? Can't find anything on the web. I don't have a HDMI cable laying around so for now I'm stuck waiting for the 980. Am I missing something?
18  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: 4K gaming on: November 27, 2015, 07:08:22 PM
Getting the monitor in store tomorrow. Video card should come Mon or Tuesday. I'm excited. Microcenter scared me. They cancelled out the Chicago order saying it was sold out. I couldn't find it for a bit. But then a store in the burbs had it, so I'm all set.
19  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: 4K gaming on: November 27, 2015, 05:12:16 PM
Well, on this black Friday I bit the bullet and went for it. Microcenter has the Acer XB 280hk on sale for $499. And of course I can't leave my trusty gtx770 in there to power that, so I got an MSI GTX 980. So we shall see how all this works out in a few days. Picking the monitor up in store but getting the gpu from New Egg. Hope my normal web surfing stuff doesn't look too small.

How do you guys feel about refurbished monitors. Worth it or dangerous?
21  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: 4K gaming on: August 31, 2015, 01:16:31 PM
Nice articles! Ideally, it does seem I should save up to get a Card and monitor at the same time if I want to go 4k. Thanks for all the help guys. It's a hard choice. I've been gaming for a @ 1650 for a long while and since I built my rig with a 770 when they first came out everything has run smooth maxed out. Even Witcher 3 with hair effect on. I've gotten way used to the smooth play. But 4K does look amazing. What to do.......
22  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: 4K gaming on: August 30, 2015, 04:09:43 AM
Good points.
23  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: 4K gaming on: August 29, 2015, 07:58:10 PM
Shows it doable. With room to spare for rpg's. Considering that's 5K not 4K, and not gsynch. Thanks-good stuff.
24  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: 4K gaming on: August 28, 2015, 01:12:34 PM
Actually I'm not committed to this monitor. But in the latest PC gamer round up it was the most affordable with what I want, so I used it as an example. There are others out there. I am interested in 4K, resolution is most important to me. And I'm an nvidia fanboy so I want gsync. So the big question for me was weather a 770 could drive 4K at all without making games a slide show.
25  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: 4K gaming on: August 27, 2015, 08:04:06 PM
Thank you AK. I value your opinion so I have been checking every day to see if you would chime in. I am so torn on this. Since it is a possibility I'm going to have to check out the display in person.
26  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: 4K gaming on: August 22, 2015, 09:12:35 PM
You can play pretty much any modern game in 4k as long as you have the card to drive it. And gsynch will help some, but maybe not enough for me. And Engine #9, thanks for your imput. I do agree with Lee though, it really looks like something to se a game running in 4K. I don't play action games, mostly rpgs and strat. Still, I get the feeling I can't get away with it until I can get a 980 at the same time.
27  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / 4K gaming on: August 22, 2015, 04:36:10 PM
So I'm getting hot for the Acer predator XB280HK. 4K gaming and Gsynch. However, after shelling out $680+ for this, I would have to stay with my nvidia 7702GB. Is this foolish?

I think it may have a good sheen of nostalgia over the top of the flaws.  I certainly have forgotten a few of them about Mafia 2 that have come to light while watching a streamer play through that one.  For example, the checkpoints are so badly spaced and arbitrary that you can lose hours for small and stupid deaths.  One mission in particular pits you against 2 dozen enemies, half of whom are entrenched and throwing molotov cocktails.  The insult comes after you finish the mission.  To advance the next mission, you needed to pay a character 10's of thousands of dollars.  If you had not saved up for this surprise payout, your options to raise enough cash were limited to robbing the few and sparse stores, along with the associated cost of changing clothes and risk of death, or farming cars for the scrap crusher.  You did this without so much as a checkpoint from the beginning of the mission, before the shootout.

I saw a player spend an hour getting the shootout down enough to beat it, only to die to a random carjack victim who put up a fight after grinding cars to meet the payout for an extra 45 minutes.

This section was so bad I remember almost rage quitting after playing it on hard, and that was without the money grind afterwards.

Interesting. I must have sailed through that somehow. I don't remember any of those tough spots in Mafia 2. I remember quite a few in the first game. The infamous car race, the parking garage shootout, the airport. Here's hoping in 2015 they put in save anywhere.

Should finish up Witcher 3. Then back to Legends of Eisenwald. I played the early acts, now I get the full game!
31  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/XB1/ps4] The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on: June 27, 2015, 02:42:31 PM
I hit a point where I leveled to far ahead of a batch of quests. Once they grey out you get 5 exp points for them. Kind of a bummer. And I seem to have a mess of level 12's when I'm at 19. Not sure how that happens. Almost done with them. I'm sure I will like things a lot more when I'm advancing.

I do have to get around to TWD season 2 at some point, but for now it's all Witcher 3.

Is that after today's patch?  I have a 4 gb 770 and cannot play at max with hairworks and really get much better than 30 fps.

Before the patch. Are you playing @ 1650 or 1900? And I only have a 2gb 770-boy do I hate that decision now. Anyway, my game is completely smooth. I figured this is because I'm playing at a lower res that most people. I have an i7 4770K and 8 gb pcs ram.
34  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/XB1/ps4] The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on: June 05, 2015, 05:29:04 PM
I've finally hit the spot where I know how all the symptoms work and can just play. It really makes me feel like I'm a witcher out in the land looking for work when chasing down anything outside of the main quest. Not that the main quests are bad, just that then I feel like I'm following a story more than an adventurer out in the wild where anything can happen.  The variety of alchemy stuff is kind of overwhelming and I haven't found any advanced blacksmiths or armorers yet but I'm sure that's part of it. Wish I could get my hands on more skill points-yes, I know about places of power-but too many would unbalance everything. I'm glad I stayed with my 1650x1080 monitor. For the longest time it was because my old video card wouldn't handle more. Now, my Nvidia 770 can play this game with everything maxed including the hair effects.

I have a Z87 plus MB with 4 memory slots. I have 2 filled with 4GB sticks. I'm thinking of adding some. I can't find any PC3 with the exact 8-8-8-24 timmings. Do I have to match up exactly? I am using dual channel but this would be another channel. Also, do I have to stick with 4X4 or could I do 8X8 in the empty channel?

Continuing with Lords of Xulima. Bard has an insta death song now. Yet I still have fights too tough to try yet. Want to start Witcher 3 but dislike playing two games at once.

I was doubtful about how things would run on my comparatively modest 2600K i7 processor and Nvidia 780 graphics card, but at least in the early areas, the game seems to maintain a completely solid framerate well above 30.  It's easy to tell because lowering the framerate limiter to 30 diminishes the smoothness of all the animations, particularly during combat.

The one setting I'll definitely be keeping off is the Nvidia GameWorks Hair.  It looks pretty amazing, even just on Geralt, but single-handedly lowers the framerate by at least 15 fps.  Maybe more.

Wild Hunt looks shockingly good, especially during dialogue sequences where I get so engrossed in looking at the character details that I get distracted from what they're saying.  It's enough to make me wonder if it can possibly maintain this level of detail throughout.  The Witcher 2 held the award for the best looking game I'd ever seen for many years after its release, but that had the luxury of discrete maps where the designers could lavish detail onto everything.  It'll be interesting to see if Wild Hunt can wow me this much as I move beyond the starting areas.

The one concern I have is that the combat feels almost weightless so far, with the only feedback I get on the success of my swings measured in whether or not the enemy's lifebar shortens.  My sense is that the sound effects for a successful strike are simply too subtle, lacking the force and gristle you get from melee combat in something like Bloodborne, Dragon Age: Inquisition, or Arkham City.  Even Skyrim, with relatively simplistic mechanics, has a satisfying crunch when you hack something with your sword.  I may try adjusting the sound balance to see if it makes a difference.

-Autistic Angel

Should I just assume you are playing at 1080? My specs are similar to yours so I would like to know. No offense, but I see so many posts about frame rate without saying what they are playing it at. Should I be just assuming 1080 unless otherwise noted?
