1  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: How should I tackle the releases of March? on: April 01, 2017, 10:59:04 PM
I'm a one game at a time guy myself. Hate trying to go back after not playing for a while. Don't even do much DLC for that reason. Of the games you listed, Horizon seems to be getting the most raves. i'm PC only myself, so it's not for me.
2  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Worth changing from a 980 GTX to a 1080 GTX? on: April 01, 2017, 10:10:17 PM
Hey this section is alive!!! I'm very happy with my 1080, not so much that it's half price now, but that's the way of tech. Playing in 4k with maxed settings is very nice. Andromeda looked quite sweet, but then I discovered the dreaded DX bug and can only play in 1900 until EA fixes it.
3  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Anything you're looking forward to playing this year? on: January 22, 2017, 09:57:48 PM
Mass Effect. But I don't pay full price or even half price for games so I probably won't play it this year.

Buler?? Atomic Kid? Anybody?
5  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: New build. Thoughts? on: December 19, 2016, 02:45:09 AM
Ah. That 290x should pump 1080 just fine. I had a 980 GTX for just a year because of a black Friday deal on a Acer 28" 4K for half off.
6  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: New build. Thoughts? on: December 18, 2016, 04:43:46 PM
I have the 960 Evo and it works great for me. Slightly surprised you stayed with the GPU. What res do you game at?
7  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Asus Z87-+ won't go into sleep mode, just powers off instead on: December 17, 2016, 06:39:16 PM
Kinda frustrating. I looked on line, updated the Bios, changed the power setting in the Bios, unplugged the computer for a full work day. Haven't taken the Cmos battery out yet. it's keeping current info with the unplug. When it starts up after shut down it struggles. it spins up, stops, spins up, stops, then boots. SSD drive that's less than six months old. So for now I have left it on never sleep. It seems to be a known issue on ASUS boards, but none of the listed fixes have worked so far.
Any Ideas?
8  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Help! Monitor won't see new 1080GTX on: December 04, 2016, 03:25:50 PM
So I got a bright shiny new MSI GTX 1080 gaming X. But when I hook it up to my Acer XB280HK thru Display port, it reports no signal.  I have an older monitor which I hooked up using DVD. The card works just fine.  Searching around I found other people have had issues with display port on the 1000 cards. Seems to be something about DP 1.4 vs 1.2. Nothing has worked. Any thoughts?
9  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Worth changing from a 980 GTX to a 1080 GTX? on: November 25, 2016, 04:02:49 PM
That's a nice site for comparisons. thank you!
10  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Worth changing from a 980 GTX to a 1080 GTX? on: November 25, 2016, 04:04:12 AM
Or kinda stupid. Hoping for a good price for Black or cyber day. I have a 4K monitor but haven't tried anything new on it yet. The charts seem to show about 20% or so. Just wondering what others think.

Sunless Sea Zubmariner. Awesome.
13  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Agony [XB1/PS4/PC] - gore horror on: August 21, 2016, 06:34:33 PM
That looks excellent! Only thing concerning is it also looked rather difficult. I don't mind a decent challenge, but I'm not into DS type difficulty.
14  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: SSD's on: July 26, 2016, 12:36:30 AM
Yes. The stupid .net4 was tripping me up. I didn't want to use my ASUS disk because the USB drivers are bad. But the SSD wouldn't let me connect to the web. So I booted up the old drive and put it on a thumb drive and put it on the SSD. Then it wouldn't run it saying I already had it. Roll Eyes So I bit the bullet and used the disc. Sure enough, when it was done all my USB's were dead. But this time I was ready with a PS2 mouse, and set up a virtual keyboard, downloaded the updated driver and I was set. Then I updated everything because the MOBO is 2 yrs old and it's not like those drivers were fresh then anyway. Then I decided to roll over to Windows 10 because I want DX12, even though I don't need it yet.  That went seamlessly, but I had to learn where MS moved everything Tongue I love the drive. It is a quite noticeable difference. Only thing, I thought switching between drives or dragging stuff over would be simple. I must not understand something. So if I can't do that, my storage went from 2T to 512GB, which after the partition and stuff I put on it is down to 360. It's still more than worth it, I just have to be somewhat careful.
15  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: SSD's on: July 20, 2016, 02:32:26 PM
I never thought I would need all my drivers. I guess I thought MOBO drivers reside on the MOBO. I figured I would need video drivers but not all the others. I have my MOBO disc somewhere but it has bad input drivers. I built this system and when I loaded these drivers they shut all my USB's off. My M/KB is USB. That was fun to get out of. So I brought my thumb drive to work and downloaded the ASUS tool. Should be able to get thing up and running when I get home. No anxiety because I can always just use my old HDD. I start jonesing pretty quick if I have no monster rig at home.
16  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: SSD's on: July 20, 2016, 11:55:01 AM
I have the old drive in. That's how I'm connected now. Just have to get the network driver on the SSD. Silly me thought the OS would have some basic functionality.
17  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: SSD's on: July 20, 2016, 12:20:07 AM
SOS!!! Help me  Obi-Wan!!! So installation was a pain, mostly because I'm an idiot. To make a long story short, putting it in I made the video cable just barely loose. So when I fired it back up I could hear it post but the monitor never woke up. Then I had to start in BIOS to set the boot order. Finally, I'm up and it see's the drive. I put the OS on it. Man, this thing is blazing. However, none of the drivers are loaded and I have no idea how to get them from the old HD to the SSD. Can't get it to even see my router without the proper drivers so I can't pull stuff down from the web. Thought I would ask here first before my google search. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
18  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: SSD's on: July 16, 2016, 03:22:57 PM
Well, you sure talked me out of that!  This is my monster gaming rig and now that I know about the differences in TLC and such I just wasn't up for putting a super bargain unit in. So, thanks to the ease of Amazon, I cancelled that out and ordered a Samsung 850 pro Sata 3 512 GB. It gets here Monday.
19  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: SSD's on: July 15, 2016, 11:58:12 PM
Well here goes, I ordered an OCZ Trion 150 480 GB. No offense AK, I just wanted to save a few bucks. More concerned with getting things set up correctly. 480 is nice and roomy though.
20  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: SSD's on: July 14, 2016, 04:42:53 PM
Thank you. The PS info is what I needed.
21  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: SSD's on: July 14, 2016, 12:13:57 AM
I must be an idiot. When you say replace your boot drive first, does that mean I install the ssd and designate it the boot drive and put windows on it? Or do I have to disconnect my HDD first then install my SSD?
22  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: SSD's on: June 19, 2016, 09:19:05 PM
punisher, that idea always scares me. Only time I ever do a clean install is when something breaks icon_biggrin  Or this last time when I actually built my own rig. That was fun! Until the MOBO drivers that came on the DVD from ASUS were corrupted and loaded then turned off all of my USB's. Considering my keyboard and mouse are USB it took me a while to figure out how to get back in to fix it.
23  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: SSD's on: June 19, 2016, 06:34:03 PM
I think if I just want the OS on it the Intel 730 240GB should be fine, Yes?
24  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: SSD's on: June 18, 2016, 04:29:32 PM
Thank you AK for the good advice as always. So what are the best steps to proceed? This will probably seem stupid, but I have never done anything like this. I assume I have to take the OS(7pro) off of the existing drive and then reinstall from the CD onto the SSD? Am I close?
25  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / SSD's on: June 11, 2016, 05:19:55 PM
So I'm thinking about getting one but I'm not sure how I would organize things. Would I move my OS over to the new drive? How difficult is that to do. And should it just be my OS or my OS and my current game. Obviously not room enough for all my games. Or should I leave my OS on the regular HD and just have my current game on the OS? Asking for opinions.
26  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: I'm building a new PC for first time 15 years on: June 01, 2016, 03:49:36 PM
So how long do you plan on keeping/using the 1080p monitor? Because at that res, you won't notice a difference between the 1070 and 1080. 4K would be a different case. If you will use 1080 for a couple of years, stick with the 1070 because something better than the 1080 2 yrs from now.
27  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: I'm building a new PC for first time 15 years on: May 28, 2016, 12:09:01 AM
Are you waiting for the partner boards? You can get nvidia's board now but it is vanilla. I think the other boards will be a tad better.
28  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: weird artifact on: March 30, 2016, 08:13:56 PM
hopefully it will never come back, but of course it probably will. I will see if I can do that if/when it does.
29  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: weird artifact on: March 26, 2016, 12:20:27 AM
Well, according to two stress/test programs I ran the vram is fine. I wounder if the DP cable gets a bit loose? Hasn't come back since the last episode.
30  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: weird artifact on: March 24, 2016, 01:17:13 PM
Thank you so much! I will look into that. It had not come back until last night. In spades. More artifacts and the text was blurry. I had 20 min before I had to leave. I whipped out my old monitor and hooked it up. It came on and was perfect. I thought I had the culprit. However when I hooked up my new monitor again it came on perfect and is still fine as I type this. So I still don't know what's going on.
31  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: weird artifact on: March 12, 2016, 07:46:14 PM
Don't remember the exact hr but it was near 10pm on Thursday. Only thing close to that time is a "cap12" error. Looking that up it seems unrelated. So far it still has not returned. Fingers crossed.
32  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: weird artifact on: March 12, 2016, 04:20:15 PM
I was on the driver from October when it started. I downloaded the latest one and the issue persisted. I've used it for 2 days now with no issues. It still unnerves me though.

Had my new upgrade since November. Acer 4K G-sync monitor and a MSI GTX 980 to power it. Has worked like a charm till last night. Was playing Sunless sea and suddenly got 3 vertical stripes the full height of the screen. The center one moved with the center of the screen. So I quit, restarted the game, still there. Still there on the desktop as well. Fired up 3 other games, still there. Checked the temp and it was 30C. CPU was also 30C, so it wasn't that. Checked the fans and had a moment of panic when I saw the GPU fans weren't spinning. But I quickly discovered it was because the GPU was at 30C-duh. When I switched to manual I could spin the fans right up. I have not overclocked the card. I even installed new nvidia drivers. Rebooted the computer-still there. Shut down the computer and unplugged it. Brought it back up and it was still there. It was late at night so I just turned it all off and planned on testing different monitors and card today, but when I fired it back up this AM it was all gone. Any thoughts as to why it was going on? Sorry if I was to wordy.
34  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Displayport question on: December 17, 2015, 05:13:29 AM
Do you believe the idiots @ Acer put the wrong cable in the box of their 4k masterpiece monitor? That only has display port out, btw. Once my research showed me the cable hadn't been redone I just went out and bought one. Of course, the connectors look nothing like the thing Acer had in the box. I'm very much in love with 4K now and my single 980 runs things just fine.
35  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: 4K gaming on: December 05, 2015, 04:36:14 PM
I love 4K gaming. My gts 980 can run it with games maxed so far. Newest game I have tried is AC Syndicate. It really makes a nice difference and is also great at all the non-gaming stuff. I still doubt I would have paid regular price for the GPU and the monitor but black Friday was awesome. Bet they have sale prices around Christmas as well. No dead pixels on the 280HK. There is some light bleed around the edges. I don't notice it while gaming, but can a bit while surfing. Just reading on line that it comes with brightness maxed and turning it down helps. It's not a deal killer for me by any means. I went from 1680 to this and the change is quite startling and fun.
36  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4, XB1, PC] Assassin's Creed Syndicate on: November 29, 2015, 04:10:09 PM
Thanks for the heads up AA. Didn't mean I was going to play it before Syndicate. I don't even own it yet. Guess I'll wait till it's $5 and play it then for completeness sake.
37  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4, XB1, PC] Assassin's Creed Syndicate on: November 29, 2015, 01:23:33 AM
Just got a new gtx 980 to go with my 4K monitor so I get Syndicate for .99. Looking forward to it. Enjoy the series. Haven't played Unity yet.
38  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Displayport question on: November 28, 2015, 11:43:35 PM
AAARRRGGGHHHH!  So I come home with my shiny new Acer 4K monitor. It's going to be powered by a gtx980 but it's not here yet. I thought I would hook it up to my current gtx770 just to see how it looks. I cannot get the displayport cable to attach to the gpu. Have they updated the displayport since the 770 was released? Can't find anything on the web. I don't have a HDMI cable laying around so for now I'm stuck waiting for the 980. Am I missing something?
39  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: 4K gaming on: November 27, 2015, 07:08:22 PM
Getting the monitor in store tomorrow. Video card should come Mon or Tuesday. I'm excited. Microcenter scared me. They cancelled out the Chicago order saying it was sold out. I couldn't find it for a bit. But then a store in the burbs had it, so I'm all set.
40  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: 4K gaming on: November 27, 2015, 05:12:16 PM
Well, on this black Friday I bit the bullet and went for it. Microcenter has the Acer XB 280hk on sale for $499. And of course I can't leave my trusty gtx770 in there to power that, so I got an MSI GTX 980. So we shall see how all this works out in a few days. Picking the monitor up in store but getting the gpu from New Egg. Hope my normal web surfing stuff doesn't look too small.
