One of the most frequent complaints Iíve seen is that the save points are really spread out.  Iím waiting to see if PC patches/moders can add in the option to save anywhere or at least put in some additional check points.  You can argue that checkpoints add to tense atmosphere of the game all you want but I donít have the time to deal with that silly nonsense.

I'm not too excited about this either, especially if you narrowly escape death and then have to do it all over again because you couldn't save.

+1 exactly. It would suck all the fun out for me.

Well.....Bethesda just announced that they recommend 4gb vram for "The Evil Within."  Which sort of makes me urpy as I bought a 770 with 2GB last year. But I suppose it depends on what res you like to play at and how much antialiasing you have to have. If you want to be ultra and game in 4k, probably need 2 new cards in SLI. I'm perfectly happy with 1680@1050 so I believe I'm okay for a while.
3  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Another video card question on: September 14, 2014, 02:28:31 PM
looks like a geforce 750 TI would be a good choice. here is a Tom's hardware page that gives you some options.

All mainstream cards use PCI-E now. While I believe they are up to PCI-E 3 now, any PCIE card will fit in any pcie slot, it just won't take advantage of the extra bandwith the latest slots offer. But with what you are running, you won't even feel it.  hope this helps.

I really enjoyed the Two World games but to each his own. I just finished TW2 DLC and then went looking for the next project from Reality Pump as I like their stuff. So I found Sacriligium but what concerns me is it's been in developement for a long time, and no news has been posted on the site linked since 2012. So I don't know if it's still alive or not.

I've been running it since it came out on multiple machines and Os's without incident. Doesn't mean it wasn't messing yours up though.

If the Steam sale does start Thursday, and they have a lot of my wish list on there, I may be buying lots of stuff. None of it recent releases though.
11  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4] Bloodborne (previously known as Project Beast) on: June 10, 2014, 11:35:19 PM
God Damn it! I so want to love these games. But to those people who say with Dark Souls if you just take your time and learn the moves you will not have a problem I call BS. At least BS for me. I'm a very methodical player and yet in DS I just died over and over and over. I grind my way to a new area like New Lordos and just get wiped immediately. I've been playing these games for 30+ yrs. I'm not an idiot. But DS just crushed me. Yet I love the idea of these games and 80% of them I love. I so wish they would have a real easy mode. The purists would scream bloody murder but if it's optional I can't see who it would hurt. Go ahead and flame me if you want.

Yes you can ATB. They are separate and even the game mechanics are different from game to game.

Shadowrun returns, Dead mans Switch. Enjoying it so far. It seems I like turn based a lot more than real time.
14  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: When do you buy games? on: April 30, 2014, 08:30:51 PM
I wait for sales, always. Nowdays I just about always wait till it hits $10 on Steam or elsewhere. I don't play multiplayer so I don't have to worry about that. It has the added benefit that by then the game is completely patched. There has also been times where I was able to stay away entirely when something turned out to be a total mess. My will power might be tested this fall because a lot of RPG's are coming out that are right in my sweet spot. But it's worked well so far.

16  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4/XB1/PC] Lords of the Fallen on: April 25, 2014, 08:11:22 PM
I saw this. Looks interesting, but if it's as freakin hard as DS where you have to repeat things over and over to try and get anywhere, forget it. And I'm not trying to start some flame war, really. There were so many thing in DS that were right up my alley and I so wanted to love that game. Eventually had to quit as I couldn't get anywhere.

No manual that I know of. AC has always been kind of crappy for that. There are decent wikis around if you google that. While I am by no means an expert, I am far along in the game now and believe I have figured out how most things work. And other people here know much more than me I'm sure. You should be able to get any question answered.
18  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Weekend Playlist -- 2/28/14 on: February 28, 2014, 08:11:40 PM
I have a lot of DVR'd shows to catch up on, so not as much gaming as usual. But I will be plodding along in AC Black Flag. trying to get enough metal to fully upgrade my ship so I can blast the bottom third of the map. It's kind of a slog.

I still don't get all the Bioshock Infinite hate, most of which I've heard from press. It was my GOTY last year and I couldn't stop playing it once I started, and pondered the ending for days after I completed it.

I certainly didn't hate Infinite; I enjoyed it and played it to completion. I think the problem was unrealistic expectations from the audience.  The original Bioshock was one of those games where everything just clicked, and the whole was greater than the sum of its parts.  Infinite's "parts" were all well done and polished to the nth degree, but it never transcended those parts like the original did.  And I think that's what most people were expecting; which is kind of like asking lightning to strike twice.  Even the best developers can't hit a grand slam each and every time, but Levine's track record has been stellar and most gamers expected he could simply do it again.  He came damn close, but Infinite didn't have that certain je-na-sais-I-don't-know-what that his previous Shock games had.

I think this is a fair description of how I felt. While the individual parts were well done, they never really came together for me.

I'm likely alone in my opinion, but I felt the Bioshock games were a bit overrated. For sure they deserved to be ranked excellent, but IMO not AAA status in the 90+ percentile range. I'm not convinced another talented lead and dev team can't match what's bee done so far with the series. I feel bad for the staff who lost there jobs and hope they get picked up quickly by other studios.

I think the first Bioshock I'd call excellent. It was different in a very fun way from just about everything else I'd played and I was totally entertained by it. But BS2 was not up to that and I just played BS infinite a couple of months ago and didn't like it at all.
So mostly I agree with you.

I find myself enjoying this. Still learning all the systems a bit. So one of the first treasure maps I found, with the group of three palm trees? Why did they draw the big shipwreck on there if that wasn't part of it. I'm sailing all the hell over the area because I'm not sure how close or far it could be from the actual co-ordinates looking for a wrecked hull. Duh. Had to look up on line. At least now I know to ignore that stuff.

haven't seen that before Forge, but that's exactly the case in Dark Souls.  If you think there isn't any feedback to tell you what you did wrong, you just aren't looking at it.

People are too used to hand holding and/or on rails gameplay that any time the screen doesn't flash 'YOU DIDN'T PRESS THE X BUTTON FAST ENOUGH, TRY AGAIN' they seem to miss it or just assume it's too hard and move on to another game.

Honestly Harkonis, I find this remark condescending and obnoxious. I've been playing these games for 25 years and I don't need hand holding or rails. DS just got to a point for me that it wasn't fun and I don't need people telling me I'm doing it wrong or I don't get. It's a great game for players that it clicks for. But there are a great many people for whom it didn't.  I'm sure you didn't mean anything by it, but I don't think that's the best way to express it.

Then say it didn't click for you in the first place instead of saying the game doesn't provide feedback, which it actually does in most cases.

It didn't click for me because it didn't provide enough feedback, for me. Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. And I'm not alone in thinking that.

I am pretty sure you mean 1680x1050. smile

I would guess most people who buy high end video cards are rocking at least a 1080p (1900x1080) or higher resolution. I would think your card will be more than good for quite a while. I think the current "sweet spot" for price vs performance is probably a 760. (I stare forlornly at my nearly 6 year old gaming pc with a 460 in it....)
There is my dyslexia again Tongue

Yeah, a 460 is what I replaced.

Turtle I'm with you. There was seldom enough feedback for me to learn enough to progress at a steady rate. But Dark Souls has divided people like this from the onset.

As you learn to the play the game that happens less often as well.  The game teaches you to be cautious and alert to your surroundings.  Usually if you die, outside of a boss fight, it's because you've gotten careless.

I would say I got about 30% of the way through and never quite got to that point. And then some of the bosses seemed impossible. It really bummed me because I wanted to love it but it just got to be too much work, for me anyway.

Nice to see you are happy with it. I just put in my order for my new rig, same processor and motherboard but a GTX 780 video card instead. I also went with the 750 watt power supply. And I broke down and got a 480GB SSD for the OS and games, the rest on the HDD. Now I just have to wait a couple of weeks...  Roll Eyes

36  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: radeon or NVIDIA ? intel or AMD ? (New PC) on: February 08, 2014, 03:48:28 PM
I just put a rig together myself 2 weeks ago. Intel has the inside track for CPU's and has for a while. Best bang for the buck is an i5. It's the same as an i7 without hyperthreading and there is a good deal of debate weather games in the future will make use of that or not.  While it seems AMD is better at the top end for gpu's, I have heard they run hot and loud. That said somebody here just put one in and I haven't seen any complaints so far. I got a Nvida GTX 770 and finished up Far Cry 3 on max and started AC Black Flag maxed with no issues and very quiet. Ram you are fine with 8 for the forseeable future. One thing with Cyberpower. I looked up reviews on the base mobo they use in most of their middle and cheaper builds. It had really terrible reviews across the board. Not sure how relevant that is, just be careful.

That trailer was awesome. Maybe one can say the graphics are okay but not cutting edge, but that's about it. Nothing in that looked cramped to me. I know you can make trailers to be deceiving, but that looked like a lot of fun to me. I think though, that the negative people already have their knives out and will probably savage the game no matter how it plays.
38  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Annual Installments discussion on: February 04, 2014, 04:11:01 PM
Seems lame to me. I burned out on CoD a long time ago. The only yearly franchise I play is AC. And sine I wait for the price to hit $10 on sales it's usually 1.5 yrs or so between games. I will play 3 and 4 close together this year since I got 4 for free with my new video card. I love RPG's enough that I would probably play those as soon as they come out but for a whole host of reasons they don't do those yearly. It really does surprise me that people buy sports games every year.  Only thing I would think you would need would be current rosters. Scanning reviews it doesn't seem like they improve the game in terms of making them more realistic every year.

I guess I should add flight sims. I really want to like them, but it takes so long to learn how to fly. With my new rig I just dl'ed the free version of Rise of Flight. Tried for about an hr to get through the first lesson(flying in a straight line through rings) and still get in spins and crash repeatedly.
