11121  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT - PLEASE READ on: January 17, 2006, 01:30:32 AM
Wait, there's a main site?    (I keed, I keed...)

Congrats KD.  Sounds great!
11122  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Baten Kaitos 2 coming to US on: January 16, 2006, 10:07:30 PM
If they got rid of the card timer, Baten Kaitos would be one of my favorite RPG's ever.  The graphics and music were simply beautiful, the story was decent, and the battle card mechanic was a blast.   That damn card timer took all the fun out of it at the higher levels, though.  Having 2 seconds to choose a card made it much more frantic and frustrating than it needed to be, and I never did make it all the way through.

Hopefully they find better voice actors as well.  Thankfully you could turn the VO off, otherwise I wouldn't have made it nearly as far as I did.  The VO work was Hall of Shame material for sure.

Anyone else surprised to see both Star Wars:  Episode III and Lego Star Wars on that list?  I figured the Ep III game would sell (I didn't  expect top 10), but I had no idea the Lego game sold that well.
11125  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ever wanted to love a game you absolutely hate? on: January 11, 2006, 10:44:24 PM
I've got quite a few games that I have purchased more than once, hoping that I could see what everyone was raving about:

Kingdom Hearts
The GTA games
Zelda:  Windwaker
Advance Wars
Any MMORPG (tried DAoC, FFXI, & City of Heroes.  Couldn't get into any of them)
Halflife (1 or 2)

I'm in Baccarat trying to find out why the casino is closed.  It seemeed the most logical place to go, but maybe I missed something.
11127  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Any DQ8 impressions yet? on: January 09, 2006, 10:15:52 PM
I can't remember the name (I haven't played since before X-mas), but it's the first town you come to after getting the ship.  I haven't actually hit the dungeon proper yet, but I know from the random encounters outside of town that I will need to level up before I do.  I've been getting my ass kicked pretty good.  I thought I had been doing a good job of levelling (I'd spend at least a full game-day each time I turned the game on doing nothing but levelling), but apparently not.

I'm also realizing that I have built a couple of my characters incorrectly.  I started out building sword skills on the main character, then switched to boomerang once I finally got one and realized what a better weapon it is.  I now use the boomerang almost exclusively, but I've got about 20 points in a sword skill that I haven't used more than once or twice in the last 10 hours.  Oops.  I developed Yangus OK, but I split off too many points for Jessica between staff and Sex Appeal as well.  My characters are probably too underpowered now, but I just can't bring myself to start over and rebuild them from the beginning.
11128  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Any DQ8 impressions yet? on: January 09, 2006, 09:34:43 PM
Ugh, I've really hit the wall with DQ8.  I'm about 25 hours in, and I've reached the point that I will need to spend a few hours levelling before tackling the next dungeon.  While I enjoy the combat for the most part, I just can't bring myself to spend the time level-grinding.

I love this game, but the ultra-simplistic story and characters are starting to cause it to lose a bit of lustre.  frown

11130  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / How was Doom 3 on the X-Box on: January 06, 2006, 07:36:24 PM
Played for about 3 hours last night, and ended up pretty unimpressed.  While the graphics are stellar, the combination of repetitive environments and extensive backtracking make the game pretty dull.  Once you get past the 'wow' factor, it's just really not that much fun.  Bought it used, so it'll be going back tomorrow afternoon.

I am, however, really enjoying the Doom RPG cell phone game.  It's a perfect time-killer for 10-20 minute stretches, and it quite fun.  How sad is it that I enjoy the cheap little cell phone game more than the multi-million dollar version?
11131  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / How was Doom 3 on the X-Box on: January 05, 2006, 11:24:36 PM
I'm not a big FPS game (I think the last console one I played was Republic Commando), so I definately don't suffer from FPS 'overkill'.  I think I'll give it a shot.
11132  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / How was Doom 3 on the X-Box on: January 05, 2006, 05:29:30 PM
I was somewhat interested in Doom 3, but my PC wasn't beefy enough to run it.  Since the X-Box version just dropped to $20, I'm looking at possibly picking it up.  The reviews were pretty good (87% on Gamerankings), but I wanted to get the collective GT opinion before I did so.

Yea or Nay?
11133  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Where can I download FF7 Advent Children trailer from on: January 02, 2006, 05:58:26 AM
It's not officially out yet in the US, but it has been released in Japan.  Last I heard it was supposed to get a US release sometime in the next month or so.  Having seen the Japanese version, I can vouch for the fact that it will be worth every penny when it comes out here.  Definately a day one purchase, even though I've already watched it about a dozen times.

Great article, and it describes the exact reasons why I have never enjoyed multiplayer gaming.  1)  I simply don't have the desire to put in the time to be remotely competitive at these games, which in turn means they aren't a lot of fun for me when/if I play online.  2)  Every time I've played on-line, it's been against some obnoxious 12-year-old either talking l33t or cursing like a sailor.

I'll just stick to my single player games that I can play at my own pace, thanks.

Not much in the way of actual presents this year, as we're flying out for a weeks vacation tomorrow.  Did manage to score a decent inexpensive digital camera (Fuji 4.1 MP), a couple Monty Python CD's, and the 'Rudy' DVD.

So, where are the discussions on the great games out for the PSP?

They're still loading?

Dammit Warning, you owe me a new monitor.

Tru1cy does have a point.  It's only recently that the DS has come into it's own game-wise.  I'm really hoping that the games for the PSP eventually catch up with the sweet hardware, but I don't see much indication that they will in the near future.  I've been very 'meh' about the list of upcoming PSP games.  If they suddenly started announcing some quality RPG titles (hell, even ports would be fine at this point), I could generate some interest in the system.  Until then, the DS will be my system of choice.
11139  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What's your Game of the Year for 2005? on: December 23, 2005, 03:44:55 PM
Guitar Hero.

I can say with a certainty that in all my years of gaming, I've never had this much fun with a game.  Sure, there have been more involving, more emotional, and technically 'better' games, but nothing comes close to Guitar Hero in sheer fun factor.    Absolute brilliance.

Runners up:

-  Dragon Quest VIII
-  Meteos
-  Civ IV (I know it's PC, but it deserves a mention)

It better be damn good.

Oh, it most definately is.  It's an incredible piece of art, that has more jaw-dropping moments that I could count.  However, you 1) have to be able to completely suspend your disbelief (physical laws such as gravity do not apply in this world), and 2) have to know the story and characters from the game.  People not familiar with the game should probably skip it, unless they really enjoy mindless action.

My understanding is that it is still due to be released in January, and I've seen quite a few ads in gaming (and other) magazines stating such.  Methinks Amazon just has their date wrong.

I can't think of a better reason to buy a PSP then that that. Sleep clinics across the country should start buying DS' in bulk with a copy of Animal Crossing, and force their clients to play!

Animal Crossing vs GTA
Lunar (horrid game by reviews) vs X-Men 2, Kingdom of Paradise
Mario Kart vs Burnout Legends
Puppy abuse vs nothing thank god

So…you’re apparently trying to get him to buy a DS.  slywink  I much prefer AC over any GTA game, and much to my surprise, I’m enjoying Mario Kart much more than I did my time with Burnout.  It’s true that Lunar sucks, but the PSP is not exactly a bastion of great RPG’s (*cough* Untold Legends *cough*).  When you factor in all the GBA RPG’s, I’d say the DS wins that battle hands-down.  See, it all just comes down to personal taste.

Quote
and you ds guys - lunar? how was that? is golden sun worth grabbing? any rpgs coming out soon? (i know about ff iv) mayb this will help whoever started the thread as well

Avoid Lunar like the plague.  It is a horrible, horrible game and it’s a shame that was the first traditional RPG released for the system.  There should be plenty in the GBA back-catalog to keep you busy until the new crop of DS RPG’s arrives.  Final Fantasy Tactics:  Advance, Golden Sun, Riviera (although I wasn’t crazy about it), Fire Emblem, Mario & Luigi:  Superstar Sage, and a host of others are all solid games.  As far as new RPG’s, off the top of my head I can think of a remake of FFIII, a new Mana game, a Xenosaga game, and a Baten Kaitos spin-off.  If you’re a turn-based RPG fan, Disciples and Age of Empires are coming, and Advance Wars DS is certainly worth a look.  The recently released Mario & Luigi game is supposed to be very good, although I haven’t tried it yet.

And last but not least, every DS owner has to try Meteos (which, imo, is far better than it’s PSP counterpart, Lumines) and Metroid pinball.  There is certainly enough there to keep any gamer busy.
11145  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / DS or PSP? on: December 19, 2005, 08:17:56 PM
Having owned both, I'll echo Gator's comments.  The PSP is an awesome little machine, but the game lineup is seriously lacking if you're into anything besides racing or sports games.  If you're into RPG's, forget it.  I sold mine before most of the movies came out, but I certainly like the idea.

The DS has a great lineup of quirky and interesting games...but quirky and interesting are definately matters of opinion.  While I love playing Meteos, Trauma Center or Metroid Pinball, I'm sure there are plenty of others who think they are complete crap.  The DS has the added plus of backwards compatibility with the GBA, a feature which I have used far more than any of the actual DS games.

Take a hard look at the games (and especially the upcoming releases) to determine which system would be best for you.  I'd highly recommend the DS at this point, but ask me again in a year after the PSP has a bigger library and I might change my mind.

KotOR 1 is a far better game, imo.  They really didn't add that many features in 2, or at least none that really stand out in my mind.  The story & characters as a whole in 1 was superb, and are good throughout most of 2 - but you have to be able to stomach an absolutely horrible ending.  I also think you would definately want the background from 1 before you dove into 2.  There's quite a few things that wouldn't make much sense if you hadn't played the first game.

Now paging Starshifter & ATB...

[Actually, a guy at MS told me that's exactly what the thinking is.  Basically, they figure that the hardcore gamers that pre-ordered at the specialty places will still buy one regardless of how they are treated so they are favoring the mass-market retailers.

It makes sense in a way.  The original XBox did very well in the specialty retailers but struggled to reach the mass market.  This time they are willing to risk alienating some of the hard core fans if they can achieve more elsewhere.

That makes no sense to me.  My understanding is that they are essentially selling the console as a loss-leader, with the money actually being made on the software sales.  Aren't the hard-core gamers that ones that will end up buying the most games to cover that gap?  I have a hard time seeing Susie Soccermom spending nearly as much money on games as Joe Fanboy would.

I think Killzone's marketing worked against it as well.  It was touted as the 'Halo-killer' for the PS2, which gave everybody way too lofty expectations.  When it wasn't the end-all-be-all of console FPS games, people seemed to trash it.

I'm not a big fan of console FPS, but I might have to give it a shot.

I'll be picking this one up right before my trip.  Metroid Pinball & Trauma Center are fun, but I need an RPG I can sink my teeth into while I'm away for a week.  I've never played it before, and it's been getting good reviews, so I can't wait!

I'm trying so hard to be excited for this...but I just can't.  That wimpy little main character just does nothing for me, especially when he's replacing someone as bad-ass as Yuri was.  If Yuri and Karin were back, I'd pick this one up in a heartbeat, as they were some truly great characters.

I'm sure I'll still play it, but I just can't seem to muster any excitement.

There was an article either in last month's GI or EGM that talked about Van Halen songs.  Apparently, getting a Van Halen was their number one priority, but they could never get any of the band's reps to call them back, so they skipped them.  The devs kept making mention of a sequel, so here's hoping.

Until the 360 gets some Japanese style RPG's, I can't see it being all that successful.  Remember, this a country that banned releasing new Dragon Quest games on weekdays because of the economic impact of the entire country skipping work to play the game.

No. Fucking. Way. That's insane.

About halfway down the page on this site:

Dragon Quest III made one critical mistake that changed the fabric of game history forever in Japan though: It was released on a weekday. This lead to anarchy for a day as millions called in sick, waiting in line just to get the game. Japan's legislatures were not slow to act, enforcing a now historic law that bans Dragon Quest from ever being released in Japan on a weekday. This law is still in effect today, as each Dragon Quest entry is met with millions still copping out of a day of work.

From another site as well:

Its popularity is hard to imagine for us western gamers. Dragon Quest III was released on a weekday and many kids skipped school and workers called in sick to purchase and play their copy. Lines at game stores grew several blocks long. Some people were even mugged by disgruntled customers desperate to get their hands on one. There were even complaints that Dragon Quest slowed the country's productivity which resulted in a DQ game only to be released on a weekend or holiday. There has yet to be a game in North America that has reached the cultural phenomenon status that Dragon Quest has. When Dragon Quest IV was released, a celebration was held and "hoimi" (the game's basic healing spell) became an official Japanese word.

Insane is right.
