11121  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Sunday th 18th: Camping Out? When? on: December 17, 2005, 11:56:39 PM
There were about 20 people camped out outside the BestBuy this afternoon in 15 degree temps.  I don't care how neat the system is, that's just plain stupid.
11122  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Knights of the Old Republic I or II? on: December 17, 2005, 02:05:12 AM
KotOR 1 is a far better game, imo.  They really didn't add that many features in 2, or at least none that really stand out in my mind.  The story & characters as a whole in 1 was superb, and are good throughout most of 2 - but you have to be able to stomach an absolutely horrible ending.  I also think you would definately want the background from 1 before you dove into 2.  There's quite a few things that wouldn't make much sense if you hadn't played the first game.

Now paging Starshifter & ATB...

[Actually, a guy at MS told me that's exactly what the thinking is.  Basically, they figure that the hardcore gamers that pre-ordered at the specialty places will still buy one regardless of how they are treated so they are favoring the mass-market retailers.

It makes sense in a way.  The original XBox did very well in the specialty retailers but struggled to reach the mass market.  This time they are willing to risk alienating some of the hard core fans if they can achieve more elsewhere.

That makes no sense to me.  My understanding is that they are essentially selling the console as a loss-leader, with the money actually being made on the software sales.  Aren't the hard-core gamers that ones that will end up buying the most games to cover that gap?  I have a hard time seeing Susie Soccermom spending nearly as much money on games as Joe Fanboy would.

11125  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Killzone should have gotten more attention on: December 13, 2005, 07:32:57 PM
I think Killzone's marketing worked against it as well.  It was touted as the 'Halo-killer' for the PS2, which gave everybody way too lofty expectations.  When it wasn't the end-all-be-all of console FPS games, people seemed to trash it.

I'm not a big fan of console FPS, but I might have to give it a shot.

I'll be picking this one up right before my trip.  Metroid Pinball & Trauma Center are fun, but I need an RPG I can sink my teeth into while I'm away for a week.  I've never played it before, and it's been getting good reviews, so I can't wait!

I'm trying so hard to be excited for this...but I just can't.  That wimpy little main character just does nothing for me, especially when he's replacing someone as bad-ass as Yuri was.  If Yuri and Karin were back, I'd pick this one up in a heartbeat, as they were some truly great characters.

I'm sure I'll still play it, but I just can't seem to muster any excitement.

There was an article either in last month's GI or EGM that talked about Van Halen songs.  Apparently, getting a Van Halen was their number one priority, but they could never get any of the band's reps to call them back, so they skipped them.  The devs kept making mention of a sequel, so here's hoping.

Everyone who comes to my house and plays GH leaves saying they are picking this up.  I also read an article claiming this game is flying off the shelves and is hard to keep in stock.

Keep rocking.

Hadn't thought of using a pick.  I'll have to try that.

Good to hear it's selling so well.  Bodes well for a sequel!  smile

No. Fucking. Way. That's insane.

About halfway down the page on this site:

Dragon Quest III made one critical mistake that changed the fabric of game history forever in Japan though: It was released on a weekday. This lead to anarchy for a day as millions called in sick, waiting in line just to get the game. Japan's legislatures were not slow to act, enforcing a now historic law that bans Dragon Quest from ever being released in Japan on a weekday. This law is still in effect today, as each Dragon Quest entry is met with millions still copping out of a day of work.

From another site as well:

Its popularity is hard to imagine for us western gamers. Dragon Quest III was released on a weekday and many kids skipped school and workers called in sick to purchase and play their copy. Lines at game stores grew several blocks long. Some people were even mugged by disgruntled customers desperate to get their hands on one. There were even complaints that Dragon Quest slowed the country's productivity which resulted in a DQ game only to be released on a weekend or holiday. There has yet to be a game in North America that has reached the cultural phenomenon status that Dragon Quest has. When Dragon Quest IV was released, a celebration was held and "hoimi" (the game's basic healing spell) became an official Japanese word.

Insane is right.

Well, look at the games that sell over there, and then look at what genre the X-Box lacked.

Yeah, Microsoft is totally lacking in the "freaky and/or weird-ass shit" genre.  Not nearly enough games where you poke people's posteriors with an oversized finger.

Crayola gets a golf clap for the 'oversized finger' comment, though.

No luck on the AMEX.  I clicked on the 'I want it' link it the second the counter hit 12:00:00, got a 'Connecting to server' message for about 15 seconds, then a 'Due to high demand, the site is currently at maximum capacity.  Please try again later message'.  Kept trying for a couple minutes, but got the same message each time.  I'll try again at 3:00, but I don't imagine I'll have any better luck.  frown

11140  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / Looking for DS games on: December 08, 2005, 01:54:21 AM
I'm going on a week long trip at the end of the month, and I'd like to take a few games with me. Here's a few of the games I'm looking for:

- Trauma Center
- Metroid Pinball
- Mario Kart DS
- Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

The only thing I have in the way of trades is 'Fable: The Lost Chapters' for X-Box, but I'm certainly willing to pay. The only catch is that I would need to have the game in hand before X-mas. Shoot me a PM if you're willing to part with any of the above.

My parents have always been very anti-video game.  They would never let us have a Nintendo or Super-Nintendo when I was growing up, and they consider games a complete and total waste of time.  Remarkably, they came over last weekend and I had them playing Guitar Hero for nearly 2 hours.  Dad loved playing 'Thunderkiss '65', and Mom played through 'Smoke on the Water' at least 5 times trying to get the 4-star rating.  As they were leaving, my mom said, "You know, maybe all games aren't as bad as we thought."

If a game is good enough that even my grumpy, jaded parents enjoy it, you know it must be good.  smile

11146  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Rumor Mill: Valkyrie Profile 2? on: December 07, 2005, 03:45:37 AM
I'm not a big fan of the original game, but I know there are a few here that are.  I saw this posting on another board, so take it with a grain of salt:

The title is supposedly Valkyrie Profile -Sylmeria- and it comes out in 2006 for the PS2.

The Valkyrie is named Sylmeria this time and that other lady shown (that looks a lot like she could be the Platina of this game) is the queen of Diban named Aylssia.

Also the bit of the logo you can see in the upper right looks just like the VP logo, and they already announced that there was going to be a new Tri-Ace RPG shown at Jump Fiesta this month in Japan (17 & 18th I think?).

Bears keeping an eye on, at any rate...

I wasn't terribly interested about Grandia III, as I really didn't care for either previous installment.  However, G3 looks flat out gorgeous, and DQVIII is doing wonders to change my mindset about (mainly) Enix developed games.  This one will definately be worth a look.
11148  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Guitar Hero Impressions!!! on: December 06, 2005, 04:46:24 AM
You're always following the notes on-screen.  This may have been done on a previous page, but here's how it is set up.  The game is broken down into difficulty levels:  Easy, Medium, Hard, and Expert.  Each difficulty level is broken down into 'sets' (4-5 songs), and you have to get through each song in the set before moving on to the next.  The songs get progressively harder with each subsequent set, and with each jump in difficulty.  Basically, the Easy level is the equivalent of playing a bass and the one on-screen note you play represents around 5-7 actual notes.  You are also only using 3 of the buttons.  On Medium, the one on-screen note you play may now only represent 3-4 notes, so you're having to play more notes.  Medium also introduces chords, which are 2 notes played simultaneously.  It also adds the fourth button.  Hard & Expert increase the amount of notes played and the speed at which you have to play them, as well as adding the 5th button.  By the time you get to the last set on Expert, you better have some damn fast fingers, as anyone who has tried 'Bark at the Moon' can attest to.

I found that the learning curve is just about perfect.  By the time you're able to get throuh all the songs in Easy level, you're ready for Medium, etc.  My one gripe with the game would be that there is no way to actually 'practice' the songs.  As any musician knows, you learn to play by starting slowly to develop the pattern/rhythm/etc., then build speed as skill increases.  I would love to see them implement a practice mode in which you could slow down the songs to practice the quick changes.  Some of the top-level Expert songs degenerate into a blur, so it's practically impossible to figure out the pattern.  Damn 'Cowboys from Hell'.

From a gamer to another gamer, get Mario Kart DS.  That game is awesome.  You can happily play it for a 5 minute session or a couple of hours.  Get Bones unlocked!

I've been hesitant on it because I haven't really enjoyed the previous Mario Kart games.  They're fun for a few minutes, but quickly get pretty boring to me.  I'll see how much $$ I have left after X-Mas.  Also, I saw an ad last night for Burnout on the DS.  That certainly intrigues me, as that is by far my favorite racing series.

I've been putting off my DS binge until I take my trip at the end of the December.  I'll be on a 5-6 hour flight, and will be cooped up with my parents all week, so I'm going to pick up a boatload of games right before I go to keep myself enteretained.  I'm thinking I'll get:

-  Trauma Center
-  Metroid Pinball
-  Animal Crossing
-  MarioKart (maybe)

That should be enough to keep me busy for a week.  smile

As much as I loved the first Xenosaga (probably in my all-time top 5 games), I absolutely hated the second one.  The story was fine, but the changes they made to the combat system took all the fun out of the game.  My problem now is that since I never finished episode II, I'm afraid I'll be lost on the story for epsiode III.  Hmmm, what to do...

I FINALLY GOT ALL THE WAY THROUGH ON 'HARD'!

I suppose that means I somewhat rock, of which I am very proud.  slywink

It probably would have helped if I had gone through the tutorial before I really started.  I just now found out you could do hammer-downs and pull-offs, and that tilting the guitar upright sets off the Star Power meter.  I was always screwing up my multiplier by trying to get down to the select button in the middle of a solo, and I was trying to figure out how the hell I was supposed to strum every note in some of those solos.  Of course, now I've developed bad GH habits that I'll need to break. Oh well, back to practice...

I'm stuck at work but I can post the receipts for the 8 PS2s that have failed on me since launch. (Thank GOD for replacement warranties)  For me personally, Sony hardware has failed in a 8 to 1 ratio vs. Microsoft.    There is my source.

And as a counter to that, I will submit my launch PS2 that still works absolutely fine, that has never once had any sort of technical issue, and that I have put thousands more hours into that I ever will my X-Box.  In fact, it sits next to my third X-Box - as KD said, thank god for replacement warranties - which I've had nothing but trouble with and am seriously considering replacing again.  (I wonder if that makes me a Sony fanboi, according to our insightful new troll.  Hmmm...)

Both systems are going to have their share have defective units, just like any other electronic item.   Unless it is a massive percentage of the product as a whole, I don't think it is any reflection as to the quality of either unit.  Besides, I've always wondered how many of the 'failures' for any units are due to simple abuse.  I can't imagine any console surviving the beating I've seen them take from kids.

I hate that song too, but I think it's one of the funnest to play.

I'm through the first 4 sets on hard, but I rarely get over a 3-star rating now.  The differences between GH and a real guitar start to become very obvious on the harder levels.  On a real guitar, you don't have to 'strum' every single note like you do in GH.  Especially in some of the solo passages, actually being able to strum fast enough is more of a challenge than the actual finger placement.  Not that it makes it any less fun, but it certainly is different.

And I broke the 200,000 mark for the first time last night.  I rock!  smile
