Ummm...OK.   Apparently no one did anything better this year than 'showing good humor during her breakup with Brad Pitt'.  Just when I thought GQ couldn't get any less relevant

So, where are the discussions on the great games out for the PSP?

They're still loading?

Dammit Warning, you owe me a new monitor.

Tru1cy does have a point.  It's only recently that the DS has come into it's own game-wise.  I'm really hoping that the games for the PSP eventually catch up with the sweet hardware, but I don't see much indication that they will in the near future.  I've been very 'meh' about the list of upcoming PSP games.  If they suddenly started announcing some quality RPG titles (hell, even ports would be fine at this point), I could generate some interest in the system.  Until then, the DS will be my system of choice.
11083  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What's your Game of the Year for 2005? on: December 23, 2005, 03:44:55 PM
Guitar Hero.

I can say with a certainty that in all my years of gaming, I've never had this much fun with a game.  Sure, there have been more involving, more emotional, and technically 'better' games, but nothing comes close to Guitar Hero in sheer fun factor.    Absolute brilliance.

Runners up:

-  Dragon Quest VIII
-  Meteos
-  Civ IV (I know it's PC, but it deserves a mention)

Mrs. Gratch and I will be flying from Salt Lake to Nashville to spend the week between X-mas & new years with my bro and his new baby.  While I'm not excited about flying day after christmas, I can't wait to get away for a while.

Oh, it most definately is.  It's an incredible piece of art, that has more jaw-dropping moments that I could count.  However, you 1) have to be able to completely suspend your disbelief (physical laws such as gravity do not apply in this world), and 2) have to know the story and characters from the game.  People not familiar with the game should probably skip it, unless they really enjoy mindless action.

My understanding is that it is still due to be released in January, and I've seen quite a few ads in gaming (and other) magazines stating such.  Methinks Amazon just has their date wrong.

I can't think of a better reason to buy a PSP then that that. Sleep clinics across the country should start buying DS' in bulk with a copy of Animal Crossing, and force their clients to play!

Animal Crossing vs GTA
Lunar (horrid game by reviews) vs X-Men 2, Kingdom of Paradise
Mario Kart vs Burnout Legends
Puppy abuse vs nothing thank god

So…you’re apparently trying to get him to buy a DS.  slywink  I much prefer AC over any GTA game, and much to my surprise, I’m enjoying Mario Kart much more than I did my time with Burnout.  It’s true that Lunar sucks, but the PSP is not exactly a bastion of great RPG’s (*cough* Untold Legends *cough*).  When you factor in all the GBA RPG’s, I’d say the DS wins that battle hands-down.  See, it all just comes down to personal taste.

Quote
and you ds guys - lunar? how was that? is golden sun worth grabbing? any rpgs coming out soon? (i know about ff iv) mayb this will help whoever started the thread as well

Avoid Lunar like the plague.  It is a horrible, horrible game and it’s a shame that was the first traditional RPG released for the system.  There should be plenty in the GBA back-catalog to keep you busy until the new crop of DS RPG’s arrives.  Final Fantasy Tactics:  Advance, Golden Sun, Riviera (although I wasn’t crazy about it), Fire Emblem, Mario & Luigi:  Superstar Sage, and a host of others are all solid games.  As far as new RPG’s, off the top of my head I can think of a remake of FFIII, a new Mana game, a Xenosaga game, and a Baten Kaitos spin-off.  If you’re a turn-based RPG fan, Disciples and Age of Empires are coming, and Advance Wars DS is certainly worth a look.  The recently released Mario & Luigi game is supposed to be very good, although I haven’t tried it yet.

And last but not least, every DS owner has to try Meteos (which, imo, is far better than it’s PSP counterpart, Lumines) and Metroid pinball.  There is certainly enough there to keep any gamer busy.
11089  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / DS or PSP? on: December 19, 2005, 08:17:56 PM
Having owned both, I'll echo Gator's comments.  The PSP is an awesome little machine, but the game lineup is seriously lacking if you're into anything besides racing or sports games.  If you're into RPG's, forget it.  I sold mine before most of the movies came out, but I certainly like the idea.

The DS has a great lineup of quirky and interesting games...but quirky and interesting are definately matters of opinion.  While I love playing Meteos, Trauma Center or Metroid Pinball, I'm sure there are plenty of others who think they are complete crap.  The DS has the added plus of backwards compatibility with the GBA, a feature which I have used far more than any of the actual DS games.

Take a hard look at the games (and especially the upcoming releases) to determine which system would be best for you.  I'd highly recommend the DS at this point, but ask me again in a year after the PSP has a bigger library and I might change my mind.

KotOR 1 is a far better game, imo.  They really didn't add that many features in 2, or at least none that really stand out in my mind.  The story & characters as a whole in 1 was superb, and are good throughout most of 2 - but you have to be able to stomach an absolutely horrible ending.  I also think you would definately want the background from 1 before you dove into 2.  There's quite a few things that wouldn't make much sense if you hadn't played the first game.

Now paging Starshifter & ATB...

[Actually, a guy at MS told me that's exactly what the thinking is.  Basically, they figure that the hardcore gamers that pre-ordered at the specialty places will still buy one regardless of how they are treated so they are favoring the mass-market retailers.

It makes sense in a way.  The original XBox did very well in the specialty retailers but struggled to reach the mass market.  This time they are willing to risk alienating some of the hard core fans if they can achieve more elsewhere.

That makes no sense to me.  My understanding is that they are essentially selling the console as a loss-leader, with the money actually being made on the software sales.  Aren't the hard-core gamers that ones that will end up buying the most games to cover that gap?  I have a hard time seeing Susie Soccermom spending nearly as much money on games as Joe Fanboy would.

I think Killzone's marketing worked against it as well.  It was touted as the 'Halo-killer' for the PS2, which gave everybody way too lofty expectations.  When it wasn't the end-all-be-all of console FPS games, people seemed to trash it.

I'm not a big fan of console FPS, but I might have to give it a shot.

There was an article either in last month's GI or EGM that talked about Van Halen songs.  Apparently, getting a Van Halen was their number one priority, but they could never get any of the band's reps to call them back, so they skipped them.  The devs kept making mention of a sequel, so here's hoping.

No. Fucking. Way. That's insane.

About halfway down the page on this site:

Dragon Quest III made one critical mistake that changed the fabric of game history forever in Japan though: It was released on a weekday. This lead to anarchy for a day as millions called in sick, waiting in line just to get the game. Japan's legislatures were not slow to act, enforcing a now historic law that bans Dragon Quest from ever being released in Japan on a weekday. This law is still in effect today, as each Dragon Quest entry is met with millions still copping out of a day of work.

From another site as well:

Its popularity is hard to imagine for us western gamers. Dragon Quest III was released on a weekday and many kids skipped school and workers called in sick to purchase and play their copy. Lines at game stores grew several blocks long. Some people were even mugged by disgruntled customers desperate to get their hands on one. There were even complaints that Dragon Quest slowed the country's productivity which resulted in a DQ game only to be released on a weekend or holiday. There has yet to be a game in North America that has reached the cultural phenomenon status that Dragon Quest has. When Dragon Quest IV was released, a celebration was held and "hoimi" (the game's basic healing spell) became an official Japanese word.

Insane is right.

Yeah, Microsoft is totally lacking in the "freaky and/or weird-ass shit" genre.  Not nearly enough games where you poke people's posteriors with an oversized finger.

- Mario Kart DS
- Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

The only thing I have in the way of trades is 'Fable: The Lost Chapters' for X-Box, but I'm certainly willing to pay. The only catch is that I would need to have the game in hand before X-mas. Shoot me a PM if you're willing to part with any of the above.

My parents have always been very anti-video game.  They would never let us have a Nintendo or Super-Nintendo when I was growing up, and they consider games a complete and total waste of time.  Remarkably, they came over last weekend and I had them playing Guitar Hero for nearly 2 hours.  Dad loved playing 'Thunderkiss '65', and Mom played through 'Smoke on the Water' at least 5 times trying to get the 4-star rating.  As they were leaving, my mom said, "You know, maybe all games aren't as bad as we thought."

If a game is good enough that even my grumpy, jaded parents enjoy it, you know it must be good.  smile

I'm not a big fan of the original game, but I know there are a few here that are.  I saw this posting on another board, so take it with a grain of salt:

The title is supposedly Valkyrie Profile -Sylmeria- and it comes out in 2006 for the PS2.

The Valkyrie is named Sylmeria this time and that other lady shown (that looks a lot like she could be the Platina of this game) is the queen of Diban named Aylssia.

Also the bit of the logo you can see in the upper right looks just like the VP logo, and they already announced that there was going to be a new Tri-Ace RPG shown at Jump Fiesta this month in Japan (17 & 18th I think?).

Bears keeping an eye on, at any rate...

11118  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Guitar Hero Impressions!!! on: December 06, 2005, 04:46:24 AM
You're always following the notes on-screen.  This may have been done on a previous page, but here's how it is set up.  The game is broken down into difficulty levels:  Easy, Medium, Hard, and Expert.  Each difficulty level is broken down into 'sets' (4-5 songs), and you have to get through each song in the set before moving on to the next.  The songs get progressively harder with each subsequent set, and with each jump in difficulty.  Basically, the Easy level is the equivalent of playing a bass and the one on-screen note you play represents around 5-7 actual notes.  You are also only using 3 of the buttons.  On Medium, the one on-screen note you play may now only represent 3-4 notes, so you're having to play more notes.  Medium also introduces chords, which are 2 notes played simultaneously.  It also adds the fourth button.  Hard & Expert increase the amount of notes played and the speed at which you have to play them, as well as adding the 5th button.  By the time you get to the last set on Expert, you better have some damn fast fingers, as anyone who has tried 'Bark at the Moon' can attest to.

I found that the learning curve is just about perfect.  By the time you're able to get throuh all the songs in Easy level, you're ready for Medium, etc.  My one gripe with the game would be that there is no way to actually 'practice' the songs.  As any musician knows, you learn to play by starting slowly to develop the pattern/rhythm/etc., then build speed as skill increases.  I would love to see them implement a practice mode in which you could slow down the songs to practice the quick changes.  Some of the top-level Expert songs degenerate into a blur, so it's practically impossible to figure out the pattern.  Damn 'Cowboys from Hell'.

From a gamer to another gamer, get Mario Kart DS.  That game is awesome.  You can happily play it for a 5 minute session or a couple of hours.  Get Bones unlocked!

I've been hesitant on it because I haven't really enjoyed the previous Mario Kart games.  They're fun for a few minutes, but quickly get pretty boring to me.  I'll see how much $$ I have left after X-Mas.  Also, I saw an ad last night for Burnout on the DS.  That certainly intrigues me, as that is by far my favorite racing series.
