Not to leave out the PSP, they will be getting a remake of FFT.

Here's the part of that article I found most interesting:

Another magazine, Gamelabo, reportedly mentions that Square Enix also has two more unannounced Xbox 360 games in the pipeline

Maybe this is old news, but that's a pretty major coup for the 360.

I read somewhere that FFT A2 will have a more serious tone, similar to FFT rather than FFTA.

If it keeps the battle system and has a more advanced/mature story, FFTA2 has the potential ti be the most perfect game ever created.

Did you finish XS2?

Nope.  I played it twice, and ended up quitting both times around the same spot (8'ish hours in).  From what I've heard, X3 does a pretty good job of summarizing the plot stuff.  Now if I can just track down a copy of the game, it's really tough to find!

I had tentatively put FFXII as my GOTY about a month ago.  Now that I've finished, I can confirm that it is indeed GOTY material, and probably qualifies as my GOTP5Y (Game of the Past 5 Years).

It was a ballsy move for Square to change up the FF formula like they did, but it certainly paid off.  From start to finish, FFXII is simply an awesome game.

I went back to guitar hero after playing guitar hero II and boy, it really shows up on how much they improved the timing in GH2. GH1 seems very clunky compared to GH2.

Maybe I should have skipped getting them GH1?  Or is it still worth having both?

I'd say it's still worth getting both, but definately start with GH1 and work up.  Starting with GH2 and going back to 1 is a tough transition.

I've started playing through the bonus songs in GH2, and man are they terrible.  "Pangea" is not only my least favorite GH song in both games, but ranks right up there with the worst songs I've ever heard.  Ever.

At least the bonus songs in GH were fun to play.  The ones in GH2 are stinkers all the way around.

I restarted Neverwinter Nights 2 last night, and am enjoying it quite a bit more playing a Dwarven Defender than I was trying to play with a Warpriest.  Still not completely sold on it, but my impressions are certainly better than the first time around.

People are fucking insane.  Just got back from Target, and there are about 30 people liined up outside - in a goddamn blizzard - waiting to get a Wii tomorrow morning.   Seriously, it's currently 25 degrees and dumping snow, and these people are sitting outside in their camp chairs.  Madness...

Overheard one of the managers telling someone in the store that they only got 15 units, and he's going to go out and tell everyone after 16th in line to go home.   Good luck with that.

Well, after a few weeks of amazing updates, the last month has been absolute shit.  If you're not a military or sports game fan (which I'm not), there hasn't been a single thing in the last month worth getting.  Plus, they upgraded their software and the client now seems to run quite a bit slower.  The scroll arrows (to move between games) now don't work for me either.

Thankfully, the new Sam & Max and Deus Ex are coming soon.  Hopefully they get a few more quality titles to go along with them.
10831  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [FFXII] - Putting faces to voice actors on: December 17, 2006, 01:32:29 AM
So, just for kicks I looked up the voice actors for FFXII on IMDB.  I was mainly just trying to see if the guy who played Vaan is the same actor who did Tidus in FFX (they're not, but sound pretty close to me).  Found it interesting that some of the voice actors actually look pretty similar to their game counterparts.

Ashe (also played Karin Koenig in Shadow Hearts:  Covenant.   Probably my favorite female VG character):

this is really little puzzling to me.  as I mentioned, my 3 main chars were about the same levels as yours, but I wasn't *anywhere* close to getting every piece of the LB on any of them.  the most I got with a char was Ashe...she had 95% of the magicks, 95% of the augments, about 50% of the accessories, and like 20% of the tecknicks.  and probably like 30% of the bottom section of the board (weapons/armor).  but she only got this much because she was the one who wore the LP doubling accessory.  my other 5 chars only had maybe 65-70% of how many LB slots Ashe unlocked.  so I don't understand where the difference between our chars comes from.  well I didn't bother leveling my bottom 3 chars, they were only like 30-32 at the end...but I don't see how that would make that much difference

The trick is in the LP and XP doubling accessories.  Once they became available (about halfway through, iirc), I purchased 3 of each and they were the only accessories I used throughout the entire rest of the game.  I'd keep the active party equipped with the Embroiderred Tippet (double XP) and the inactive members equipped with the Golden Armlet (double LP).  For boss fights, I'd equip everyone with the Golden Armlet.

This way, the inactive characters were earning double LP for everything, while the active characters were levelling much faster.

please don't tell me you think X is close to XII!   icon_wink

XII is superior in every aspect, except for music.  I think the score is a step down from nobuo uematsu's work.  but other than that, XII owns X (don't even get me started on X-2).  my final verdict would be a 9.7 out of 10.  I can't wait to get started on my second time through, to do 100% of everything...I finally opened the strat guide and there's a shitload of extra things I missed (I never look at the guide or any FAQs the first time through)

I think both games are masterpieces, but for completely different reasons.  FFXII is all about the epic, grand adventure while FFX is about characters and emotion at a much more personal level.  Both of these aspects were done incredibly well and I thoroughly enjoyed both, but for completely different reasons that makes them hard to compare.  Honestly - outside of Balthier & Fran - I didn't really care that much about the characters in FFXII, but felt much more attached to the world and the setting.  FFX was the complete opposite.  There was a big emotional attachment to the  characters, but the setting did nothing for me.

It's kind of like trying to compare two movies from completely different genres.  For me, it would be something like Lord of the Rings (epic action) vs. Royal Tenenbaums (characters and emotion).  They're both brilliant, but for completely different reasons and it's impossible to say one is better than the other.  Not sure if that make sense or not...   icon_smile

I agree on the music, although outside of a couple pieces, I thought FFX's music was one of Uematsu's weaker works.  (it doesn't even compare to FFVIII, imo).   FFXII's music brought back great memories of FF Tactics, which is always a good thing.

10835  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Final Fantasy XII Impressions on: December 16, 2006, 10:46:56 PM
Finished it up this afternoon.  My guess is that it took me 78'ish hours (last save was at 76, and my guess is that the final area, cinematic, and credits took about 2 hours) and the entire party was at level 54.

A few final thoughts:

-  I was a bit nervous, as I had read on a few boards that the ending was a real let-down.  Thankfully, they were all completely wrong.  As we have come to expect, Square delivered a superb ending.  Both the final boss and ending cinematic were fantastic.  Some of the CGI sequences during the final area will make your jaw drop.  They did a great job at wrapping up most of the loose ends of the story, but also left it open enough that the coming add-ons will make perfect sense without feeling tacked-on.

-  I really enjoyed the license board concept.  However, it did end up making for a group of very same-y characters towards the end.  My entire party knew every single spell, augmentation, and technik, and I actually had about 2,000 LP left over for each character with nothing to spend it on.  Although all the characters could do everything, my main party configuration was:

Tanks:  Basch & Vaan.  Both in heavy armor and swords
Healers:  Fran & Penelo.  Both in mystic armor.  Fran with bow, Penelo with Crossbow
Black Mage:    Balthier.  Mystic armor with guns.
Jack-of-all-trades:  Ashe.  Light armor (for speed) with spears.

By the endgame, I had enough LP that I probably could have purchased the equipment licenses to make all the character jobs interchangable.  Took a bit of the character building fun out, but it wasn't a deal-breaker.

-  The story started strong, dragged a bit in the middle, and really picked up towards the end.  Ivalice is a fantastic game world, and they did a great job developing the political intrigue and power struggles involved.  It really does feel like you are in an epic story as opposed to the cliche 'ragtag-group-of-heroes-saves-the-world' bit.

-  I was a bit dissapointed with the end boss.  I beat it without even having to swap out characters, and it seemed a bit weak.  Although, the CGI sequence preceeding the final battle and special attack sequences were awesome.

-  The hunt concept is great, and I probably could have added another 30 hours just trying to finish them all.  As it stands, I finished 26 hunts and felt like that was plenty.  There were also a bunch of sidequests that I could have done, but just never got around to.  FFXII really is a huge game.

I was very leery about FFXII before release.  I was afraid that it would feel too much like an MMORPG (which I loathe), and that the gambit system would take most of the fun out of the game.  The demo released with DQ8 didn't do much to help.  In fact, I actively disliked the demo and really thought I would end up disliking FFXII.  I couldn't have been more wrong.  It's easily my GOTY and is the best RPG I've played since FFX.  It's been a while since a game was able to hook me for as long as this one did, and I've only ever put more hours into one other RPG (FF VII).   The gambit system - once you got used to it - is a fantastic addition that makes gameplay much more enjoyable.  The characters (Balthier & Fran = Best.  Characters.  Ever.) and world are brilliantly concieved, and it was well worth the long wait.  I'm hugely excited for the DS spin-off, and can't wait to see what else they do with Ivalice.  If they butcher it (a la FFX-2), I'm personally going to Japan to kick some ass.   icon_wink

Overall, I'd give FFXII a solid 10 and would recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest in RPG's.

Not trying to start a flame war, but it seems a bit sad that the main suggestions for being "blown away" by the shiny, new, ultra-high-tech, top-of-the-line PS3 are a couple of completely god-awful movies.

I'm trading it in incomplete. Haven't touched it in a couple weeks now (and I've been on vacation that whole time). Somewhere in the 60-70 hour range and at the end of the last pre-end game story battles and just lost the urge. Ah well it is the most time I've ever dedicated to a FF game (or any console RPG for that matter), so I still consider it money well spent.

Just got through that stretch last night, and it's not nearly as tough as I expected it would be (you're at the big tower with the multiple bosses, right?).  With 70 hours invested and only 5'ish hours left, I'd probably be inclined to push through and finish.
