2.  Many of the arcade games aren't set up to allow you to continue your game, so you only get to play the equivalent of one quarter's worth.  Rather frustrating. about worthless. May I recommend Googling for MAME and your classic arcade titles and see what you can come up with? Odds are you'll be able to experience your favorite quarter-muncher properly that way.

Kobra's right, I'm just an idiot.  For some reason, it takes 3-4 presses of the start button on the gamepad for the continue to register, so I thought it just wasn't working.

10806  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekend Recap 16/Oct/06 on: October 16, 2006, 01:59:21 PM
I'm suffering from the worst gamer ADD I've had in years.  This weekend was:

-  Put about 3 hours into Okami.  Still really enjoy it, but it's starting to drag around 25 hours.
-  Spent all morning Sunday playing Civ IV.  Realized that I love the early to mid game, but hate the tedium of the end-game.  One of these days I'll get around to finishing one of my conquest maps.
-  Last night was all about Superstar Baseball 2 on Gametap.  I'd forgotten how great that game is.  Also played some Rastan and Golden Axe for nostalgia's sake.
-  Played tutorial missions on a bunch of other Gametap downloads.  Stronghold, Homeworld 2, Lords of the Realm III, Age of Wonders:  Shadow Magic, and Kohan II.  Probably the only one I'll actually play more of is Kohan II.
-  Fired up Titan Quest for about an hour.  Getting kind of bored with it (about halfway through Egypt)
-  Grabbed the 14-day World of Warcraft trial from Gamestop.  I've never tried it, but I figure I should see what all the fuss is about.  Took an hour to install and patch.  Played it for about 45 minutes and realized (again) that MMORPG's are just not my thing.  Uninstalled.
10807  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gametap Revisited on: October 16, 2006, 12:02:49 PM
Quick question:  Is there a way to enable the gamepad for newer games?  I really want to replay Prince of Persia & Beyond Good & Evil, but I didn't see anyway to enable my Logitec gamepad for them.  I can't imagine playing either of those on the keyboard.
10808  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Ideal Game Length For You? on: October 16, 2006, 12:01:01 PM
20-25 hours is perfect for me.   The only games that can hold my interest for much longer than that are good RPG's.  Even Okami, which is one of the best games I've played in years, is really starting to drag at the 25 hours mark.

LOL, I'm in the same boat man.  Okami, Civ IV, HOMM V, Titan Quest, plus all the new Gametap stuff.  I'm also thinking about picking up the WoW 14-day trial and giving it a shot.  I normally hate MMORPG's, but I figure I should at least give WoW a try and see if maybe it's the one that will change my mind.  Can't hurt if it's free, right?

Then we get FF XII and Guitar Hero 2 in a couple weeks.  Ugh (in a good way).

10814  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gametap Revisited on: October 14, 2006, 01:54:08 PM
After spending a night with it, I must admit that I'm very impressed.  I ran into a few issues (Tony Hawk 3 wouldn't recognize the thumbsticks on my gamepad, Robotron 2084 had no movement controls, etc.), but overall, doing some classic gaming was an absolute blast.  There were a few arcade gems on there that I had completely forgotten about and that brought back some great gaming memories.  Legendary Wings, Rastan, Strider, Altered Beast (wise fwom your gwave!!), Golden Axe, Rampage (I probably spent an hour on this one alone).  Good stuff.  I do have to admit that it is a lot harder to control these games with a gamepad than with a joystick, and some of them just flat out don't work without the stick.

Plus, when I get home from work today I'll have Worms:  Armageddon, Kohan II, Stronghold, Tropico II, Icewind Dale II, Midieval Conquest (a 'Majesty' clone), Age of Wonders:  Shadow Magic, Beyond Good & Evil, Pharoh, Cesar III, and Planescape:  Torment downloaded and ready to play.  I'd definately say I've gotten my money's worth already, and I've only had it a day.   icon_biggrin

It wasn't all roses, and I've got 2 minor complaints:

1.  It takes the regular games forever to download.  I've got a pretty fast cable connections, and most of the newer games were still taking upwards of 2.5 - 3 hours to download.  Seems like that's a really slow DL speed.

2.  Many of the arcade games aren't set up to allow you to continue your game, so you only get to play the equivalent of one quarter's worth.  Rather frustrating.

Ended up registering for Gametap last night, and spent the entire night playing old arcade games.  Rastan, Golden Axe, Defender, Dig Dug, Strider, Baseball Stars 2.  Ahhh, good times.

Plus, I've got Worms:  Armageddon, Kohan II, Stronghold, Tropico II, Icewind Dale II, Midieval Conquest (a 'Majesty' clone), Age of Wonders:  Shadow Magic, and Planescape:  Torment all downloaded and waiting for me when I get home tonight.  Gonna be a good gaming weekend.   icon_cool

I like the story (I know, crazy), the character/artwork design, and the battle system (in the first game).  I'm also one that enjoys long cutscenes and non-interaction story.

Dep just read my mind, I feel the exact same way about the series.  I loved the first game, and disliked the second one enough to not buy the third until the price dropped.
10818  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The most bizzare game you have ever player is... on: October 13, 2006, 11:21:43 PM
I signed up for Gametap this afternoon, and the first game I played was Earthworm Jim 2.  It was one of my absolute favorites on the Genesis, and I loved playing it again.  About the time I was guiding a blind cave salamander around an intestinal tract, whilst dodging flying sheep and pinball bumpers, landing on pencils stuck into the intestine walls and listening to a classical Mozart theme playing in the background, it occurred to me that a)  Shiny was doing way too many drugs in the 90's and b) this is possibly the strangest game I've ever played.

So what game struck you as odd?

10820  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Odd question - Paying Bills? on: October 13, 2006, 06:41:05 PM
I write out bills once a week (usually Sunday), then mail them a few days before the due date.  If you have enough money to pay all your monthly bills on one day, then more power to ya.  I have to wait for paychecks to hit before stuff can get paid, so weekly works better for me.

I'm still in the stone age of writing checks for my bills instead of doing them online.  The paper trail helps keep me organized, plus I'm just too lazy to get things switched over to online.

There's a fantastic Okami walkthrough up at MyCheats.  I've used it to power through a few places.  It includes videos of the annoying digging sections.

Dude, you are a lifesaver.  That will be such a huge help.  The only guide on GameFAQs is done off the Japanese version, which apparently uses a lot of different names for characters & places.  Makes it a little tough to figure out.

Thanks guys, I'll give these a try tonight.

as well as the one that makes the guy jump over the spike traps (circle him I think)

Didn't know about that one.  2 other quick questions:

1.  Can the waterspout take Ammy up in the digging sequences?  Iíve used it to take the other guy up, but Iíve tried and tried and canít get it to take Ammy up.  Frustrating.

2.  I've actually made it to the bottom (I assume it's the bottom, since it's an entire row of unbreakable rocks with nothing below it), but I assume the other guy needs to make it down too.  Correct?
10829  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Massive interest in PS3/Wii this holiday season on: October 12, 2006, 04:10:57 PM
There was a blurb on Attack of the Show last night that E-Bay is pulling PS3 presell auctions and suspending accounts.  Since people can't actually deliver the item with 30 days, it's against the Terms of Service and therefore not a valid auction.  That's a pretty clever way to combat presell sales, but I wonder how effective it will ultimately be.

Here is a thought, aren't we all here the gaming nuts suppose to be the ones dying for this system. After all we love games so much we post in a gaming forum. Most , if not all of us are in the sweet disposable income category area companies love, but if we here aren't going nuts for the ps3, who exactly is  suppose to be?
I've been thinking about this too, and I have to remind myself that the general population doesn't know anything about how Sony did at E3, what ports are or aren't included in the core version, what kind of crazy comments Sony PR has been putting out in the past year, what franchises are or aren't going to stay Sony exclusive in the next generation, etc.

For most of the people buying things, all they know is that the PS1 was great, the PS2 was great, and 3 comes after 1 and 2.

That's a very good point.  If anything, being the 'hardcore gamers' that we are might cause us to be less excited about the PS3 than Johnny Sixpack.  That's certainly not what you would expect, and I'm guessing it makes Sony a bit nervous.
10831  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Okami impressions on: October 12, 2006, 03:48:57 PM
Dammit, I knew this was going to happen.  I'm stuck about 18 hours in:

Spoiler for Hiden:
I just got to the city with all the mist that is making people sick.  You apparently have to go through one of the 'Dig-Dug-esque' sequences to release the water in the canal and get into the palace.  I've tried the digging bit over a dozen times, and I can't seem to get past it.  I've tried every imaginable route, yet I still run out of time before the idiot guy finds whatever it is he's looking for.

So far, Okami has been nearly the perfect gaming experience for me.  I'm really hoping I can figure this out in order to keep playing.  FWIW, the stupid digging sequences are by far my least favorite part of the game.

Yes, FFX is turn based.  It is also a wonderful game that I would highly recommend to anyone.  A fantastic story, compelling (if a bit whiney) characters, a fun battle system, and amazing (for the time) graphics & music.  A big  thumbsup, and it would be a shame if you missed it.

FFX-2, on the other hand, is one of the most horrible creations ever to disgrace the PS2.  I would not wish that game on my worst enemy.   They took great a great game, filtered it through a 12-year-old girl's brain (i.e.:  "Those robes are boring, Yuna would look so much better in hot pants and boots!", "Oooh, let's add a Britney Spears intro complete with cheezy J-Pop song and dancers!", "How totally bitchin would it be if the main battle mechanic revolved around changing outfits?  That would, like, totally appeal to the target market of FFX!"), and shat out the results.  I know there's a few who like it around here, but I hated absolutely everything about FFX-2.
