Possibly SimCity DS, depending on reviews.

I still love the old-school "enemy on one side, heroes on the other" combat, so that part makes me excited.  I get less excited, however, about the incredibly dull and lifeless environment they were running around in.

Still a day-one purchase for me.

Spent a few hours with Psychonauts over the weekend.  It certainly gets 10 out of 10 points for creativity, but didn't really grab me that much.  Got up to the:

Spoiler for Hiden:
Battle with the blueprint tank inside Raz's head

and I can't say that I've got a huge desire to keep playing.  Maybe it's because I've been spoiled recently by Tomb Raider:  Anniversary's epic levels, but the levels in Psychonauts didn't really seem that impressive to me.   It's not a bad game by any stretch, but certainly hasn't been the "OMG, best game evar!!11!" experience that I'd heard about.

thumbsdown  Outside of the top tier, I thought GH2 was maybe a little bit too easy in terms of difficulty, and would actually have liked a step up.

I'm with Brett on this one.  While I personally think many of our actions in Iraq are deplorable, they certainly don't fall under any definition of "genocide" that I'm aware of.
10808  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: House votes to withhold emergency funding to "Sanctuary Cities" on: June 17, 2007, 09:14:55 PM
The Littleton Republican's amendment to the Department of Homeland Security appropriations bill appears to have no language specifically defining what a "sanctuary city" is. Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper has long disputed giving the city that label.

So they're proposing to withhold emergency funds for an entire city based on the actions of a small portion of the populace, without ever defining what the specific criteria for withholding is?

No matter what your stance on illegal immigration is, that is completely asinine and more than a little bit scary.

As Kevin stated, and as have many others, and I wish people would recognize this: The Wii is not targeted toward us.  IT'S NOT OUR SYSTEM.  Just like an 800 video card is not targeted to the guy still running a pentium 2 for his Excel spreadsheets.

It seems that many people on the fence regarding which system to buy (especially parents) are picking up a Wii instead of the PS3 or 360, simply because the price of entry is lower.    If Little Johnny wants a video game system, Suzy Soccermom could care less about HD, Blu-Ray, etc., and will make a console decision simply on price.  Hence, the Wii.

Sony and MS can talk all they want about not wanting to go after the "different market" or "casual gamer", but these same people that are buying Wii's in droves could just as easily be buying a PS3 or 360 if the price were simply more reasonable.

Looks like all the other reviews rolling in are all just as bad.  This sentence alone (from this review) makes me want to avoid this game like the plague:

Missions in Tenchu Z are unnecessarily frustrating due to the lack of checkpoints or an in-mission save option, so if you die at any point during the mission you have to start over at the very beginning. This wouldn’t be that big of a deal since the game’s imbecilic enemies put up very little challenge, but there are cheap deaths galore thanks to the trap doors indiscriminately placed all over the levels. In the middle of caves, in rice fields, inside houses, hidden in patches of bushes; seriously these damn things are everywhere and you rarely see them in time to save yourself before plummeting to your untimely demise – and by untimely, we mean just minutes before you make it to the end of a given level. Sorry, but those trap doors are the work of a sadistically malevolent game designer.

VTM-Bloodlines. I have played through it probably 15 times since Xmas 04. Only since Fallout 2 have I loved a game this much. Don't know why either. Now I wanna go play frown

Just picked up VTM-Bloodlines through Steam on Saturday and worked through the tutorial.  I'm hoping the real game starts to feel more RPG than FPS, or it won't hold my attention long.

Dreamfall would be my vote.  I typically don't like adventure games, but I saw it on some 'best of' list, and picked it up on a whim.   I was simply blown away by the incredible story and characters.  Played The Longest Journey afterwards, but enjoyed Dreamfall quite a bit more.

You can extract some fun out of the experience if you use your imagination and approach each level like a ninja, but unless you really, really want to kill some ninjas, you shouldn't waste time and energy trying to make this game fun. The developer certainly didn't.

Good lord. Did the devs even TRY with this game? Man...

Sadly, I don't think the Tenchu devs have tried with anything since the first PS2 installment.  The X-Box version, PS2 sequel, PSP, DS, and now apparently this one have all been simply awful.  It's really too bad, as I really enjoyed the PS1 versions, and think the concept has a lot of potential.

Not to take anything away from the big N, but I still think this whole thing simply boils down to price.  If the 360 and PS3 were even in the same price ballpark as the Wii (or even at a reasonably sane price point), I firmly believe this console generation would look much, much different.  As it is, Sony and MS have simply priced themselves out of most homes, and have been replaced by the Wii.

Price is huge.  The difference between $250 and $400-$600 for most middle-class families with kids is enormous.

So why hasn't Microsoft dropped the price of the 360 then?  Do they think they wouldn't pick up enough sales to offset the money lost from the price drop?

As crazy as it sounds, I'm still not sure Sony & MS view the Wii as competition.  We keep hearing about how the Wii is for the "casual gamer" and that it is for a completely different demographic.   While this is somewhat true, what MS and Sony refuse to acknowledge is that most of these "casual gamers" who purchase a Wii will are purchasing it instead of buying a PS3 or 360 simply because it's cheaper.  If the price were lowered on their hardware, they would probably be getting a good chunk of these sales.

It seems like Sony & MS are so focused on beating each other, that they are simply ignoring the Wii altogether.  As if the fact that it's not being sold to this nebulous "hardcore gamer" that they're both after somehow makes the Wii a non-threat.

Just finished the long 'origins of Sephiroth' flashback sequence.  Man, that's a lot of info to digest.  I need to dig up a transcript or something so I can refer to it during some of the later segments.  Mainly when they start in with the 'Cloud was Zack' mess.

Sat down on Sunday with Tomb Raider:  Anniversary, figuring I'd finally see what all the fuss with this franchise was about.  7 hours later, I was finally able to peel myself away.  This was my first real TR experience, and I must say that I was extremely impressed (more thoughts here).  It was a great way to spend a Sunday.

Also put a couple hours into FF VII, and got through the long 'origins of Sephiroth' flashback sequence.  Amazing to think how mind-blowing those cut-scene graphics were 10 years ago.  I love this game, though, and playing it never gets old.

Played a bit of Guitar Hero II, but I think I'll be taking a break for a while.  The only song I have left to beat is Freebird on expert, but I actually seem to be getting worse each time I play.  Also spent another couple hours with Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, and am remembering why I disliked the end-game so much.  Why in the hell did they put a limit on the quest items you can carry?  You're given no indication of which ones you might still need for quests, but are forced to discard any new items after a certain point.  If you happen to discard the wrong one and still need it for an upcoming quest, well, you're pretty much screwed.  I was thinking about trying for all 300 quests this time, but I can't see that happening.  I'm at just under 40 hours, so I'll probably just push through to the end of the story bits and call it good.  It's not like I won't be playing it again in a year anyways.  smile

I used to rollerblade almost every day.  We had a river trail by my old house that was absolutely perfect for skating on.  Haven't done it since we moved 3 years ago, but I've been itching to give it a shot again.

I tried a couple newer pair of skates, and could never find one that gave me enough ankle support.  I'd end up rolling my ankles inwards, which made it really hard to skate without falling over.  I've still got my old huge skates that I absolutely love (they look like giant ski boots), but they haven't been used in a few years and I don't even know if I could get replacement wheels for them.  Maybe some research is in order this week...

Go to any sporting goods store and they have wheels and stuff to repair your skates.  All you need is an Allen wrench

Good to know.  I was afraid they might just be so outdated that I couldn't find wheels for them.

Now I'll just have to deal with all the kids laughing at my 'old man' skates.  smile
