I've always liked Turico and think he's very solid.  Kornheiser is OK - not too good, not too bad.  I absolutely can't stand Theismann, and have a very hard time listening to any game he is calling.  His nasally whine drives me nuts.

So far, I'd give the team as a whole a C+ grade.  Get rid of Joe, that would go up to a B+.

Heh.  Zelda is really hit and miss for me.  I bought a Gamecube the first time specifically for Wind Waker.  I ended up regretting it, as I really disliked that game.  I sort of liked the Minnish Cap game, though.  The new one looks very cool, but I'm wary about getting sucked in by the hype like I did with WW.  It's certainly nothing I 'have' to have right when it comes out.

FWIW, I'm also the one person in the world who hates both the GTA series and Halo.  I just have strange gaming tastes, I guess.

Another great fantasy series is the Sword of Truth; I know Gratch wouldn't recommend it beyond book 2 or 3, but the later ones actually fill out the main character a lot more. I am 2 books from the end of whats out ( www.terrygoodkind.com ) and there is a few more books out IIRC.

Actually, I'd strongly recommend it up to book 5 (Soul of the Fire), and would tentatively suggest book 6.  I was a huge fan of them up until that point (as my handle testifies), but I think it degenerated into a preachy mess after that.

One other series I'd highly recommend is Greg Keyes' Kingdom of Thorn & Bone series.  Currently at 3 books (The Briar King, The Charnel Prince, & The Blood Knight), and they just keep getting stronger as the story progresses.  A fantastic series with a well developed world, great characters, and some wonderful political intrigue.  It's not nearly on the level as, say, GRRM's Song of Ice and Fire series, but there aren't really any that are.

Tad Williams (mentioned above) also has a terrific series of fantasy novels. The series is called Memory, Sorrow and Thorn, and starts with "The Dragonbone Chair" IIRC. An amazing story. It's worth the money for the 4 paperbacks or 3 hardcovers.

This is going to be my next series after I finish re-reading 'War of the Flowers'.  i've been meaning to ask if it's any good, so I'm glad to hear some positive feedback about it.   icon_smile

I'm also still not sold on the controller.  I have the feeling it will be a blast...for about a week.  Once the novelty wears off, there has to be some solid gameplay to give the system legs.  I haven't seen anything (either in previews or the demo videos) that convinces me that there will be.

If you're up for a simple, fun adventure read set in an urban fantasy, Jum Butcher has a good series called The Dresden Files about a modern day wizard plying his trade in chicago.  It's part fantasy, part film noir, and part classic adventure.  There's no nuanced and deep plots of theories on the meaning of life, just fun simple reads for those days that you just want to unwind.

Somewhat along those same lines is Tad Williams' fantastic "War of the Flowers".  It's about an everyday joe that gets sucked into an alternate 'fantasy' world.  Just started it for the second time, and would highly recommend it.

That's not a horrible list, but there are certainly a few glaring exceptions:

-  How the hell did Skinny Puppy not make that list? They practically invented a genre, and every industrial and pseudo-industrial act since 1980 (I'm looking at you Trent) should be paying them royalties.  Either 'Last Rights' or 'Too Dark Park' definately belong on that list, but my guess is that the Rolling Stone editors would say "Who?".

-  No Bauhaus?

-  Alice in Chains 'Dirt' is far and away the best album to every come out of the whole grunge movement.  They've got Nirvana's 'Unplugged' on there but no Alice?

-  Bad Religion's 'Suffer' should certainly be there

I could not possibly disagree more.  Of course, I've never been much of an AC/DC fan (all their music just seemed like silly frat-boy nonsense to me), and I still think Appetite for Destruction kicks ass.  A lot of people have soured on GnR because of Axl's nonsense since then, but AfD is still a fantastic album.

And as others have probably said, think of the DS as a portable SNES/N64 and the PSP as a portable PS2 for what type of games to expect.

As far as graphic quality, that's a good comparison.  If you were to compare types of games, however, I'd say more along the lines of:

DS = SNES/N64 (Nintendo first party, RPG, puzzle, quirky stuff)
PSP = XBOX (mainly action, sports, & racing)

thumbsdown PC games aren't patched up to date, most are running their retail versions.  After calling tech support, it seems Gametap has no desire to keep up with patches  for example Kohan 2 was on 1.14, yet the current patch is 1.23. There is no way to patch a gametap version via external patching.  Also, this has the side effect of not allowing you to join multiplayer on the internet for MOST PC games since everyone else will have seperate versions!  In the case of some games, not having the updated versions means instability.

Glad I read this before I signed up.  That might be a deal-breaker for me.  Not so much the multiplayer, but the fact that there are too many games that require patch applications to simply work correctly.

The thing about the .ini files in Icewind Dale also gives me second thoughts.  IWD & PS:T are the two main reasons I want to sign up, but I like having cheat options available for when the game gets ridiculously hard (yeah, I'm a wuss).  Without those options available, I doubt I'd play it nearly as much.  Maybe I'll just see if I can pick them up on e-bay instead.

10791  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / ID's new cell phone game: Orcs & Elves on: September 06, 2006, 08:57:11 PM
I picked up the Doom RPG for my cell phone a while back and absolutely loved it.  Saw an ad yesterday for Id's new RPG, 'Orcs & Elves', so I downloaded it on my new Verizion 'Chocolate' phone.  In short:  Id has managed to knock it out of the part again.  If you enjoyed the Doom RPG, or are a fan of old-school first person RPG's, you need to pick this up.  The level of detail and sheer fun they pack into such a small package is amazing.  Fantastic graphics (considering the medium), an entertaining story, and a challenging & fun combat system make this the perfect game for playing in short spurts.  Both of these games have gotten much more playtime than I would ever have expected for an $8 game.  The only drawback is that O&E is almost exactly the same as Doom, but with a fantasy coat of paint.  This isn't a bad thing, but if you burned out on Doom, be warned that O&E is MOTS.

On a side-note, I'm surprised they haven't ported these games over to any of the handheld systems.  I would kill for something similar to 'Orcs & Elves' on the DS.  They obviously aren't limited by the graphics, as this game is a blast even on crappy cell phone res.  Seems to me that it could easily be ported over to a handheld system without having to recreate the wheel.  A straight up first person dungeon crawler with decent graphics and a good story would be a very welcome addition to the DS library.

-much more difficult than the first game
-repetitive enemies
-lots of grinding and backtracking, very linear

-some tricky puzzles
-Beautiful cutscenes and graphics, but poor out of synch dubbing in several instances
-Stories behind important NPC characters are never really explained and somewhat one dimensional. You will not get attached to the characters
-Battles are more complex but more interesting than the previous game

They don't actually give a final score, but overall the reviewer seemed underwhelmed. I'm guessing he'd rate it around 70-75%.

I've taken a wait and see approach to the Wii, and that video makes me think I'll wait on it for a while.  Maybe it's because none of the games they demo'ed interested me in the slightest (isn't Red Steel a porn name?), but it all just looked very clumsy.   I think the gimmick of the thing would wear off very quickly for me without more titles/franhises I was really excited about.

Well the PsP definitely interests me more, but man i like the price of the DS better.  $70 difference is alot and i could grab several more games or save some cash with the DS.  How are the adventure/rpg typr games on the DS?  Are the graphics comparable to the PsP?

Simply put, the PSP blows away the DS in the graphics department.  There really isn't much of a comparison.  That being said, all the graphical flair in the world means nothing if the games aren't any good.  I mainly just play RPG's, and the PSP is a barren wasteland of suck in that department with no end in sight.

Quote
and to answer you Gratch, no i havent done any console rpg's.  thats why i'm dissappointed in my Xbox.  Wish i had went with the PS2 because i miss the console rpg type games.

Dude, if you're jonesing for JRPG's, get a DS.  Just keep in mind that the current DS RPG crop is pretty lean.  There are so many fantastic GBA RPG's and SRPG's that really are 'must play' titles.  If nothing else, go buy a used GBA (they're, what, $50 now?), with a few games and see if it grabs you.  Golden Sun, Summon Night, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (or Tactics Ogre), Fire Emblem, Advance Wars 2, Mario & Luigi, and Zelda:  Minish Cap would be good starters.  If you don't like it, I'm pretty sure Gamestop lets you return it within a week.
10796  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Help me pick a portable console system on: September 05, 2006, 11:03:29 PM
If you're interested in RPG's, definately go with the DS.  There's a few out already, with a ton more coming out in the next few months (FF III, Xenosaga, Contact, Baten Kaitos, Disciples II, etc.).  Plus, since you mentioned you haven't had a handheld before, I assume you haven't played any of the fantastic RPG's and adventure games for the GBA.  There's an already established library there that could easily keep you gaming for months on end.  For RPG's, the PSP has Valkyrie Profile, and...Valkyrie Profile.  And it doesn't look as if the drought is going to end anytime soon.

However, if graphics are a major issue, then the PSP is your best bet.  Quite honestly, many of the DS games look like ass.  There's a few exceptions, but graphics are certainly not a DS strong point.  Many of the sports, action, & racing games are great on the PSP.

You can't really go wrong with either system at this point.  It just depends on what type of game you want to play.

Thanks LE.  I pulled it off the trading block for now, and will try it again.  Knowing this info will be a huge help, so we'll see what happens.

A couple more quick questions:

1.  Is there a way to tell what new spells are upcoming at what level?  It would be nice to see what kind of abilities I can expect from certain characters.

2.  Is there a way to change character 'jobs' (a la Final Fantasy Tactics)?  I remember reading something about it in the tutorial stuff, but it seemed rather complex.

3.  What's the best recruitment strategy?  I was going to pick up one of each character type and just keep building them up, but I'm sure there's got to be a better way than that.
