Any game you are interested in trading it for? Or is it strickly for sale? Thanks.

Nothing really leaps to mind, but let me know what you've got for PS2, PC, DS, or XBox.  Something might strike my fancy.

10725  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Calling it Quits on a Game: What's Your Threshold? on: January 11, 2007, 08:48:20 PM
I very rarely finish games.  I will play most games until they don't interest me anymore, then move on.  Occasionally one will hook me all the way through (most recently FFXII & Dreamfall), but they're few and far between.  As a general rule, I try to give most non-RPG's at least 2 hours, and I try to give RPG's at least 8 hours.  If a game doesn't grab me by then, chances are it never will.  There have been a few that have seen less than that, but that's pretty much my "make it or break it" point.  I've only spent 70+ hours on 3 games in my life:  FFVII, FFXII, and FF Tactics Advance.

The shortest I've ever spent with a game is 5 minutes with the Earthworm Jim 2 port for GBA.  Bought it used, played it for 5 minutes in the parking lot of the Gamestop, and immediately took it back in for credit.

Mrs. Gratch has also had a minor breakthrough lately.  While I don't think I'll ever get her playing a "real" game with any regularity, every time I walk in the office she's playing Bookworm Adventures on her computer.  She won't let me pay for the full version, and I think she's been through the demo about a hundred times now.  I just need to break down and buy it for her.  She also watched me play the last 10 hours of Dreamfall a couple weeks ago because she got so wrapped up in the story.  We're going to start The Longest Journey together soon, so we'll see how that goes.  Maybe adventure and puzzle games are "gateway" games.

Actually I bought a DS Lite.  I just meant "made the right choice" as in "is it any fun? "better than a PSP?"

That's a whole 'nother debate, one which you'll get a wide range of opinions.  FWIW, I much prefer the DS to the PSP, but it all depends on what type of games you like and how important graphics are.  There are a shit-ton of RPG's coming down the pipe this year, so if you're a fan of JRPG's you definitely picked the right system.

I'll be honest, there's not a ton of games on the DS that have really hooked me so far.  The only real "must have" for me at this point is Meteos, but the Castlevania games, Mario & Luigi:  PiT, New Super Mario, Mario Cart, Trauma Center, and Metroid Pinball are certainly all fun little diversions.  Elite Beat Agents didn't click for me, but I can certainly see how people would love it.  I still need to get my hands on Contact & Phoenix Wright.  There's also a ton of good GBA games, in case you missed them the first time around.

4. Can anyone think of a TBS game that is as good or better- on any platform?  I could toss in Disciples 2 (my all time favorite PC game) and HOMMIII (really my first TBS game), but the balancing and excellent AI of AWDS tops them all in my book.

None of the games in the Advance Wars series did anything for me, so I can think of about a dozen TBS games I enjoyed far more than AWDS.  I think a game like Final Fantasy Tactics trumps it in nearly every way possible, but thats just my opinion.

well I would do some research on his locality. Odds are the police won't do anything. You may have something because some places have internet fraud laws, but since it's under $500 it's not a felony in most places. However, just looks at the theft laws in his state, consider the filing internet fraud charges with the FBI, hell you have the guys address. Also, see if he deposited your check or cashed it. Hopefully your bank has a record on file, mine has digital images of all my checks. If he deposited it in his checking account, raise a stink with your bank. A lot of the times they are willing to investigate on your behalf, and sometimes you get your money back.

You have a lot of options, I would still go public on the board (please pm me the board as I am now morbidly curious and because I use several sites for sales and trades) since you are a newbie what do you have to lose? At the very least you will raise into question his credibility , check out local laws, consider the banking options and check out internet fraud laws. I think you could do something, depends on how much you want to pursue it.

What he said.

That's brutal man, I feel for ya.  I find it very suspicious that someone with a 100+ trader rating wouldn't bother to get a tracking number for a $400+ sale.  Hell, I do it on $10 sales!

My newest find is the metal band Mastodon.  They are beyond hard with a thunderous wall of drums and guitars.  They are just stupidly great.  Their album Leviathan is a concept album based on Moby Dick of all things.  It's sheer brillance and their newest is Blood Mountain According to the band "It's about climbing up a mountain and the different things that can happen to you when you're stranded on a mountain, in the woods, and you're lost. You're starving, hallucinating, running into strange creatures. You're being hunted. It's about that whole struggle."  I play this when I want something loud and powerful but they're not for everyone I suppose.

I definately need to check out Blood Mountain.  It's been a while since I've bought any new metal albums, and that sounds pretty cool.
10744  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Non-mainstream music recommendations on: January 06, 2007, 02:12:58 PM
I'd be wiling to bet that 80-90% of the bands I listen to have either never been played on the radio, or have had extremely limited airplay.  I tend to lean toward the gothic/industrial stuff, so here's a few of my favorites.  They may or may not be considered obscure, depending on the musical circles you travel in:

-  All time fave is Skinny Puppy .  Also dig all the side projects like Ohgr, Rx, Download, Tear Garden, etc.
-  Front Line Assembly
-  Hocico
-  Assemblage 23
-  Black Lung
-  Clan of Xxymox
-  Noise Unit
-  Dead Can Dance
-  Faith and the Muse
-  Cradle of Filth
-  Funker Vogt
-  The Jesus Lizard
-  Legendary Pink Dots
-  Mr. Bungle
-  Vast
-  Wolfsheim
-  The Cruxshadows
-  Project Pitchfork
-  Opeth
-  etc., etc., etc
10745  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Best ideas/suggestions on what to do with the backlog on: January 03, 2007, 10:41:30 PM
Backlog has never really concerned me, mainly because I don't worry to much about finishing games.  I play a game until I'm not having fun anymore, then I'm done.  Doesn't really matter to me if it's 8 hours or 70 hours with the credits rolling.  I never feel like I have to finish a game.

There is a box set available on Amazon for $179.00.  Seems like an odd-price, considering each individual DVD is $20-$25 and it doesn't look like the box set offers additional content.
10747  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Saw Appleseed for the first time... on: January 03, 2007, 04:36:30 PM
OK, I know it's a completely different style from Appleseed, but how in Bob's name did a 'recommend some anime' thread get this far without a single mention of Miyazaki??  For shame people, for shame.   icon_wink

Anyone with even a passing interest in anime needs to immediately watch Spirited Away.  One of the single most incredible movies you will ever see.  I also really liked Howl's Moving Castle and Castle in the Sky.  A couple other suggestions that closer the Appleseed style:

Vampire Hunter D.  The original is so-so, but the second one (Bloodlust) is awesome
Metropolis.  This one is very unique, and tends to elicit some pretty polarizing reactions from people.  I loved it, but have talked to plenty others who hated it.  YMMV.

Most of my faves have already been mentioned, but I'll add a hearty +1 for:

-  Ghost in the Shell
-  Akira
-  Cowboy Bebop (probably my all-time favorite series)
-  Ninja Scroll (Loved the movie, absolutely hated the series)
-  Trigun
-  Record of Lodoss War
-  Berzerk (I wasn't a huge fan, but I know a ton of folks that love it)

It's very violent. One scene in particular that involves a bottle is pretty gruesome. There are many scenes with gunshots to the head. I defintely wouldn't take someone who was opposed to violence in films.

Thanks.  Definately a rental for me, then.
