This game really suffers from not having any sort of map or objective markers.  I just spent the better part of an hour wandering around the goddamn Elven forest trying to figure out where the hell I'm supposed to go next.  There's one spot where my advisor guy says something about "Boy, it would be nice to have some blues.", but I have no frakkiing idea where the hell I'm supposed to find the blue hive.  My guess is that I need to find it before I can proceed (there's a gate switch just across some water from where the advisor is taunting me), but I honestly have no idea where it is.  I finally just turned the game off in frustration.   icon_evil

10723  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / One Red Ring of Death? on: July 03, 2007, 03:45:20 AM
I'd been playing my 360 for most of the afternoon today.  Watched two movies, played some GHII, then went to fire up Overlords.  When I turned the system back on, I got one red ring (bottom right), along with a System Error screen.  Turned it off, booted it up again, and it started just fine.  Played about 45 minutes of Overlord with no problem.

This is pretty much my first real glitch.  I've had GHII disc errors twice, both of which were fixed with a simple reboot.  Given that I was using the system for such a long time today (probably more than it had been used in one stretch before), I'm not sure if it's something I should be worried about, or just a minor blip.  I hate feeling like I'm walking on eggshells with this thing, but it is a good reminder to call and renew my warranty.
10724  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Overlords on: July 02, 2007, 09:46:48 PM
Quick question.  When you teleport from your tower using the Tower Heart, there's always a number to the left of the location.  I thought it might be how many quests are in that area, but that hasn't seemed to match up.  Anyone know what that number means?  Stupid manual doesn't mention it anywhere.

10726  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: So what is everyones plan for July 4th? on: July 02, 2007, 01:30:23 PM
I've got today, tomorrow, and Wednesday off.  Will probably see both Ratatouille and Die Hard sometime over the next couple days, but that's the extent of ourbig plans.

I've got some major meetings on Thursday morning, so I'll probably be in bed with earplugs at 10pm on July 4th.

I liked Indigo Prophecy quite a bit despite its faults, but it's got nothing on Dreamfall.  Unless you just outright hate the idea of a semi-interactive story, you should try that one out sometime!  icon_cool

+1.  Dreamfall had some weak points in it's gameplay (combat system, ugh), but it's story and characters will blow you away.

Another 5-day weekend for me!   icon_cool

Will try and put a good chunk of time into Overlords, as well as trying to break the 11 million mark in GHII.  Might also give Vampire The Masquerade:  Bloodlines another shot.  Picked it up off Steam a couple weeks ago, and barely got through the demo before getting distracted by other games.
10729  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Few console owners using multimedia capabilities, says study on: June 29, 2007, 01:54:29 PM
I tried streaming music from my PC to my 360 once, but thought the interface was extremely clunky and never went back to it.
10730  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gametap Revisited on: June 29, 2007, 01:35:36 PM
There was an interesting teaser bit about American McGee's "Grimm" coming exclusively to GameTap.  Details are still pretty scarce, but it looks like a reimagining of the Brother's Grimm tale.

I absolutely loved what they did with the Alice game, so I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this one.
10731  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Few console owners using multimedia capabilities, says study on: June 29, 2007, 11:56:35 AM
I still use my standalone DVD player because I don't want to risk putting any additional wear and tear on my 360.  The thing is fragile enough as is.

Was able to put in a couple more hours tonight.  Rampaging and pillaging my way through the Shire was an absolute blast.  Sweeping my minions around the room in a path of destruction whilst chucking fireballs brings an evil smile to my face.  I'm not sure how long the novelty will last, but it's great fun so far.

A couple minor gripes:

1.  The lack of any sort of map certainly makes things confusing at times.  Many of the rooms look the same, and you are forced to pay very close attention to where you're going.

2.  Checkpoint save system.  Blech.   icon_mad

3.  Seems like the minions are sometimes unresponsive.  I'll tell them to sweep around a room, and only half of them will go, or they'll take a completely different route, or they'll just stand and look at me.  Will probably get better as I become more familiar with the controls.

A question as well.  I just got my first batch of Reds, and there's a Red "hive" it says I'm required to move before proceeding.  It requires 10 Reds to move, but there are only enough red orbs to summon 8.  I can't continue until I move the hive, but I can't move the hive until I can find more red orbs.  Am I missing something?

After reading that and glancing at my backlog it dropped down to a 'day one' purchase to 'sometime next year' playthrough.

It normally would be for me as well, but I'm having such buyer's remorse on my 360 (it's basically a $400 Guitar Hero box right now) that I had to get something to play.  smile

Was only able to put in about an hour last night, so no real impressions yet.  Should finally get some gaming time tomorrow, so I'll put up some thoughts then.
10736  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Blue Dragon release date(UK) on: June 28, 2007, 03:34:07 PM
Saying Blue Dragon is "sort of an RPG" would be like saying Halo is "sort of an FPS".  slywink

BD will be very similar to the old Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest games in many respects.  It's being developed the original Final Fantasy creator, and from the previews I've seen, looks like it has a very old-school JRPG feel.

Wii and DS seem like a no-brainer due to their input methods.  Sounds potentially great but I wonder what differences there will be between this and the PC versions?

Awesomeness.  Hell, I'd love just a straight port of Civ II on DS.

I just found out that the voice of Jenny is provided Lauren Ambrose, who also played Claire on Six Feet Under.

Cool Points +1

Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle) did the voice work for all the creatures as well.  Haven't heard it yet, but it's supposed to be pretty amazing considering they didn't do any kind of special effects or processing on it.

There's no post effects on that dude's voice?  Okay, now that's fairly impressive.

Patton can do absolutely incredible and bizzare things with his voice.  Check out Adult Themes for Voice sometime for a complete head-trip.

Does anyone think that the last, best Pixar film was "A Bug's Life"? Seems to me, though very good, that just about every one since then has been as good, or better.  icon_confused

Yeah, that's kind of strange.  I think "Bug's Life" is easily the weakest of all the Pixar movies, and it seems strange they would use it as the basis of comparison.

After a couple dry months, their release schedule the last month has been absolutely fantastic.  My 1-year "special" subscription is up in October, and I'll definitely be resubscribing.  There's a ton of old games on there that I never got a chance to play the first time around.   It is absolutely worth the minimal subscription fee.

I'm out on Grim Grimoire - this is a dealbreaker for me (taken from IGN):

Quote
Battles that last 45 minutes or more aren't unheard of in Grim. Heck, when I got to one of the final showdowns, I was spending 80 and 90 minutes trying to take out a stubborn group of hell spawn. For the most part, I didn't mind the lengthy gameplay sessions, but I don't have a life and get to play these things at work. If you don't get to game for 10 hours a day, you're going to have a sticking point with Grim.

Namely, there's no way to save mid-battle.

Crap, that means I'm out as well.  Carving out 45 minutes in one sitting is a major stretch for me, and 90 minutes is pretty much impossible.  Oh well.

EDIT TO ADD: Carcasonne is coming to XBLA this week!   I will get that.  I think Carcasonne will be more accessible and a bigger hit than Catan was.

Ohhhhhh!  In for Carcasonne!

I have the demo of Overlord but haven't fired it up yet, I'll try it out and see if it is worth my cash.
Man this sucks-Carcasonne looks really good and like something I might enjoy, but I purchased Catan and all of you just stopped playing it that same week. I still have yet to get in a multiplayer game.

Same here.  I tried playing some MP Catan a few times (both with the GT/OO crew, and against random people), but it was always really flaky.  Horrible lag, timeouts, dropped connections, etc.  Consequently, I haven't even fired it up for over a month.

As interesting as Carcasonne looks, I'm afraid it would end up the same way, so I'm passing on it for now.
