Well, for the first time in the near year I've had a DS, a game has locked up. That game?  Read the thread title dummy.

So not only are there terrible sound bugs, but the game locks.  Eek a voots!

This happened to me 4-5 times during my 40'ish hours.  Thankfully, it's always after an auto-save, so I didn't lose anything.

It's also the only DS game I've played that's ever locked.

I pounded him into the ground.  I don't think I dropped below half health.  Obviously I rule, and you, as the saying goes, drool.

However, I still haven't run across the legendary bat.

Bite me. smile  I have been fighting him for 3 days.

There are battles where he has done 50 points of damage before I even move.  It is very, very easy to see why people accuse the game of cheating when that happens.

IIRC, the ogre has an axe that has a 50% chance of an extra turn when he inflicts damage.  If his 50% misses, you're in pretty good shape.  If it continuously hits, well...

Are you in the mood for a story-based, shorter experience (FFX) or a battle-heavy, lengthy game (DQ8)?

Hmm, not sure. I thought FF XII was pretty lengthy and I'd be looking for something along those lines I think. How do those two games compare to FF XII length and grinding-wise?

1.  I finished FFX in a little over 40 hours.  That same amount of time into DQVIII, and I'd barely scratched the surface.
2.  You'll do way more grinding in DQVIII.
3.  FFX is much more focused on developing the story and characters on a completely linear path, while DQ VIII's main focus is for you freely explore the expansive world.  I enjoyed FFX quite a bit more, but it really depends on what you're looking for.

I really don't get why people think this.  Other than the fact that its tone is less serious, everything else about the game is very similar to Covenant.  As long as you're not expecting a Covenant-level story, it's one of the most purely fun RPGs on the PS2.

That's exactly the problem.  Both of the first games had amazing stories and strong characters, which were the main reason I enjoyed them.  If you throw in a non-sensical story and substitute a whiny 15-year-old as your lead character, all you're left with is a decent combat system which wears thin after a while.

While I partially agree with your first statement, I utterly disagree with your second. Forging weapons is VERY useful ability, as you can get some nice goodies from it. And there are some nice spells you can learn if you take the time to do so.

I'm with KC in regards to forging.  I did take the time and effort to forge quite a few things, but none of them were ever any better than what I found in the shops.  I used the same equipment through most of the game as well.

PS3 is a flop, its dead and done unless something dramatic happens.

The "something dramatic" will be when the AAA titles from the AAA franchises are released.  The question becomes, will there be enough support for the system at that point for anyone to care?

To be honest, the lack of AAA titles from both MS & Sony baffles me.   Outside of Gears of War and maybe Guitar Hero, where are the big system sellers for either console?  There's no GTA, no Halo, no Final Fantasy, no Metal Gear, nothing from any of the series that are all but proven to sell more systems.  Hell, even the new IP's that are considered heavy hitters have been ridiculously slow in coming (i.e. Lair, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed).  I know they're all on the way, but it seems like both systems are sure taking their sweet time.

Gotta hand it to the big N.  At least they're smart enough to release something from their flagship franchises (i.e. Mario & Zelda) quickly to keep people interested.

Most likely more Guitar Hero 2 for me.  I'm mainly working on 5-starring everything on hard.  I've got through the first 6 sets with all 5-stars, but a couple songs in the 7th are giving me fits.  I freaking hate The Trooper  finger.  I'm also working my way through on Expert (first 6 sets are done).  I never did finish Expert on PS2, so I'm bound and determined to do it this time.

I've also gotten on a major Final Fantasy Tactics Advance kick again (I'm even listening to the orchestrated soundtrack at work!).  I'm now nearing 150 hours with this goofy little game, and still absolutely love it.

Since it's now been down for 2 weeks, my guess is that Gamerankings is not coming back.   What a bummer.  Their "top rated" lists were extremely handy when picking up a new system.   It was also really useful to have not only all the reviews, but also all the preview articles in one easy to find place.

Some games do have issues with the BC emulation.  I've tried playing Red Dead Revolver (which looks like a pretty fun western) but like you I'm having major graphical issues that are detracting from gameplay.  Your best bet to find out if a game has issues is to search the official XBox.com forums for the game in question and see what pops up.

Wow, I'd never been to the official XBox forums before.  What an complete mess!

Quote
I had the same thing with Thief - weird lights showing through the walls.  Most everything else has been fine with the occasional glitch here and there.

My main problem is that the lights show through people as well.  So you have guards walking around with what looks like a torch burning in their chest because of the glitch.   Think I'll just track down the PC version instead.
10669  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 360 backwards compatibility issues on: April 26, 2007, 02:16:53 PM
I've picked up two Xbox 1 games to play on the 360:  KotOR 2 and Thief:  Deadly Shadows.  KotOR 2 works fine and plays just like it did on the original XBox.  Thief, however, is an unplayable mess.  Somehow light sources got screwed up, so now any sort of fire shows right through walls (i.e. if there's a torch or fire in a fireplace on the opposite side of a wall, it will bleed through to the side you're on).  Also, the light reflections coming in through windows now "stick" in one place in the room, no matter how the camera is positioned.  It's tough to explain, but it suffice to say, it basically makes the game unplayable.

So, is BC on the 360 hit-and-miss like this, or do most games work without a hitch?  There's a couple other XBox games I'd like to pick up, but don't want to spend the $$ if they're going to have significant problems.
10670  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mario and Zelda-I Just Don't Get It... on: April 26, 2007, 02:09:47 PM
I'm with the OP.   I certainly understand how people would enjoy them, but they don't click with me at all.   Not that I haven't tried, mind you (I bought a Gamecube specifically for WW when it came out), but I tend to get bored with any Mario or Zelda game very quickly.  Then again, I didn't enjoy either series back in the NES days either.

And since everyone seems to be doing the comparison, I though the gameplay in Okami was far, far better than anything I ever played in a Zelda game.

Thanks Ron.  Bummer about any mid-mission saves.  Some of the gigantic missions of the previous games were fantastic, right up until either the insta-death or boss fight you couldn't quite figure out.   Side note:  This is something else I've never been able to figure out about the Tenchu series.  Why is it that you sneak around the entire level, avoiding any and all detection, then they always throw you into a giant melee battle against the level boss?  That always seemed silly to me.

The smell thing sounds pretty gimmicky to me.  Is it implemented well?

Awesome preview!!  This one just jumped way, way up on my most wanted list (silently, of course).   ninja

Three questions:

1.  My biggest concern is with the camera, which has been my biggest gripe with the last few Tenchu games.  It would tend to give you very bad angles which made things more difficult than necessary.  It was especially bad when your character was in corners or against a wall.  Does it fare better this time around?

2.  The last game was notorious for it's "cheap" deaths.  You'd be running down a seemingly harmless passageway, and suddenly fall into a bottomless pit you could barely even see.  Combined with the save system (see next question), it was extremely frustrating.  Any sign of this sort of thing?

3.  Does it allow for mid-mission saves?  Nothing more aggravating than methodically sneaking around a level for an hour+, then getting smacked down by the boss and having to do the entire thing over again.   Hoping they fixed that somewhat.

Bonus question:

4.  Do the graphics look better in action than they do in the screenshots?  The screens are rather less than impressive, and it almost looks like Xbox 1-level graphics.   Smooth animation can do wonders in that department, though.
