The license discussion brings up an interesting question.  How are you guys developing your characters?  9 hours in, and I'm going with:

Vaan:  Melee Fighter (swords) with a few white mage abilities.  Not really sure which direction I want to take him yet.
Fran:  White & Green mage & bow specialist
Balthier:  Black mage and gun specialist.  He seems to be a bit low on MP, but maybe I can bump that up through licenses
Captain Basch:  Seems like a straight up fighter type.  Currently focusing on swords, shields, & armor.

Debating if I should have someone work with staves, or leave that for additonal PC's.  Hmmm...

I think Gamefaqs has a map of the license board if you want to plan ahead.

I've actually got the guide, so I can tell where everything is.  I'd just prefer to be able to see them on the board instead of having to open up the giant poster every time I want to upgrade something.

I gave it a 9.

+  Amazing graphics, both in-game and in-cutscene
+  Great characters
+  Extremely detailed and compelling story.  Makes you feel like you're in the middle of a huge conflict.
+  Revamped combat system is great, once you get the hang of it
+  Sweeping musical story that adds an 'epic' feel
+  Auto-map is awesome

-  Some of the VO work is spotty.  Bangaa's are very hard for me to understand, as is anyone wearing a helmet.
-  Not crazy about the fact you can't see what unlocked on the license board do.  You can usually guess, but surprises might cause some issues with character progression.

I really used to like my GS, but they've really started going downhill since the manager left a month back.  They've gotten way more pushy about pre-orders and 'upgrades' (i.e. regular edition to CE).  I usually pre-order games that I know I'll want or games that are niche titles, but I don't want to have some schlub pushing me on pre-orders I don't want.  The counter monkey asked me 4 seperate times if I wanted to pre-order Halo 3, even after I told him I have no interest in the Halo games.

I got to the store right when they opened to pick up FF XII on Tuesday.  I had pre-ordered, but there were two other guys there who hadn't.  The new manager told them they were lucky they showed up right at opening because they only had a couple non-reserve copies available, and that they better be sure to pre-order next time.  About 5 minutes later, I overheard him tell the other employee that the entire top shelf (must have been about 50 copies) were the non-pre-orders.  Nice.

Quote
However, I am starting to realize that I think it actually takes more time for me to get a game in a Gamestop because there are only 2 people in there tops and if people have trade-ins, which they usually do, it backs things up.

This is a big problem at my store.  They are horribly understaffed, and even the slightest problem with a transaction leads to very long wait times.  The old manager told me they receive the same amount of schedulable hours as the stores that do 1/3 the amount of business.

10647  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Neverwinter Nights 2 Impressions on: November 02, 2006, 03:28:24 PM
Picked it up last night (against my better judgement, as I don't think it will get much playtime) and played for about an hour. It felt a lot like NWN1 to me, which is a good thing. The graphics are certainly underwhelming, but it runs just fine on my system (XP 3400+, GF 7600GT, 1 GB RAM). at 1024 X 768. I wasn't terribly impressed with the voice acting, and the story seems like RPG 101, but I'm sure both will improve as I go. Used one of the pre-made fighter characters, but I think I'm going to start over with my own build tonight.

One quick question. In the first area (the town fair thing), I am supposed to pick-pocket a guy with the kid thief, but I can't figure out how to do it. The tutorial says to right click on the guy and use the 'Sleight of Hand' feat. I've tried this multiple times, but right clicking on him does nothing (yes, I have the thief selected). Am I missing something?

I'm back on the fence with this one.  I do really want to play it, but I'm afraid I won't put any time into it after picking up FF XII.  I have it paid for at Gamestop, but I think I'm going to transfer that $$ towards Guitar Hero II then pick up NWN2 after I finish a couple other games.  No sense paying $50 to have a dust collector on my shelf for a month.

Yeah, the X-Axis stuff screwed me up too.  Took me about an hour to get used to it.  Very aggrivating.

WOW at the music in the game though, especially the stuff in the intro video and opening cutscene.  Had a very John Williams flavor to it and felt very unlike normal FF music.

FWIW, they used a new composer this time around.  Uematsu had done all the previous FF games, and they brought in Sakimoto (?) this time.  He had previously worked on music for the FF Tactics & Vagrant Story games.

Just put in about 9 hours and my brain is shot.  I'll put up some detailed impressions tomorrow, but if I were to sum it up in a few words, they would be:

This game is absolutely fantastic and deserves every bit of the glowing reviews it's receiving.   icon_biggrin

More to come tomorrow...

Interesting review.  It's the first one I've seen that says a lot negative about the story.   While I'm concerned that I won't care for the battle system (the demo did nothing for me), the story and characters are not much of a concern.  We shall see.

As much as I love Okami, it really bogged down for me about 25 hours in.  If they had made it 20-25 hours, it would be one of my favorite games of all time, but it's really too long imo.  As it stands, I haven't quite been able to push through to the end yet, and with FFXII & NWN2 coming out this week, it's going to be a long time until it gets played again.   :icon_sad:

I don't really look at review scores, I go off what I read in the review. This is an excerpt from the GI review that made me skeptical:

"These nagging doubts are distracting enough to keep Final Fantasy XII from ascending to the same heights as some of the previous entries..."

You would have to read the entire review to know what his doubts refer too, bit it is disheartening nonetheless.

I tend to take GI's reviews with a massive grain of salt as well, so that's understandable.  As Tebunker said, the reviews elsewhere have been overwhelmingly positive, so I'm awfully excited for it.

On a side note, I picked up the guide this afternoon and it weighs in a over 350 pages.  This thing is freaking huge!

Now is a better time than ever to own a PS2.  The price is low, the last couple months have given/will give us some incredible games (Okami, FFXII, Guitar Hero 2, God of War 2, Disgaea 2, etc.), and you've got an entire back catalog of fantastic games to play (I'm assuming you haven't owned one before).

There are different levels of addiction, though.  In the example you cited, I think anyone would agree that your BIL has a serious problem.    If he refuses to see it as a problem, then he does deserve some measure of contempt.  However, I think it would be more contempt for his stubborness/willfull ignorance of his family's well-being rather than contempt simply because he's addicted.  One doesn't always come with the other.

In my case, I was/am addicted to chewing tobacco.   I haven't hurt anyone else with my addiction.  I haven't yet had any health problems due to my addiction.  It was actually a very relaxing habit that I quite enjoyed.  However, I'm quitting simply because I wanted to save a few $$ each month and I knew that it eventually may lead to some health issues.  What about that sort addiction would deserve to be "looked down on"?

Not trying to troll here, I'm honestly just curious as to the reasoning.

Gratch,

I'm glad you decided to stop chewing tobacco even if it's just because of money.  But one thing that bugs me is this statement  "I haven't hurt anyone else with my addiction"   Now , I don't personally, so I have to ask, are you married?  If you are, you are hurting someone, you're hurting your family.  Maybe not now, but possible down the road.  They are the ones who will have to take care of you because of the addiction.  Even if you're not married, you hurting the average joe, because we are spending millions in taxes to healthcare (hospitals, EMS, county services) because of people's addictions.

You make a good point, and I agree that there is possiblity of harm to my family in the future.  I've hopefully nipped it in the bud so it won't happen, but we'll see.

I was really just trying to provide a less extreme scenario than what Kobra described.   I was curious to see if the reaction towards addiction is the same regardless of the circumstances.

I don't disagree that some of any addiction (be it cigarettes, WoW, or whatever) is mental, but for you to say that there is nothing chemically addicting about nicotine is flat out incorrect.  Hence the links.

I have found nothing addictive in the chemical makeup of Cigarettes that isn't anymore addicting than eating a candy bar for example.  Or perhaps a cup of coffee. I just think the reason people get addicted is because they have addictive personalities that they can't overcome.

The National Institute of Health and American Heart Association (among a million others) would disagree with you.

Quote
Research has shown how nicotine acts on the brain to produce a number of effects. Of primary importance to its addictive nature are findings that nicotine activates reward pathways—the brain circuitry that regulates feelings of pleasure. A key brain chemical involved in mediating the desire to consume drugs is the neurotransmitter dopamine, and research has shown that nicotine increases levels of dopamine in the reward circuits. This reaction is similar to that seen with other drugs of abuse, and is thought to underlie the pleasurable sensations experienced by many smokers9. Nicotine’s pharmacokinetic properties also enhance its abuse potential. Cigarette smoking produces a rapid distribution of nicotine to the brain, with drug levels peaking within 10 seconds of inhalation9. However, the acute effects of nicotine dissipate in a few minutes, as do the associated feelings of reward, which causes the smoker to continue dosing to maintain the drug’s pleasurable effects and prevent withdrawal.

Nicotine withdrawal symptoms include irritability, craving, cognitive and attentional deficits, sleep disturbances, and increased appetite. These symptoms may begin within a few hours after the last cigarette, quickly driving people back to tobacco use. Symptoms peak within the first few days of smoking cessation and may subside within a few weeks12. For some people, however, symptoms may persist for months.

I feel your pain.  I recently quit chewing tobacco, and it's been very difficult.  One thing that helped is when someone over at OO told me that the cravings only last 7 minutes.  Whenever you get a craving for a cig (or in my case, a chaw), look at the clock and tell yourself that if you're still craving one in 7 minutes you can have it.  I've found that 99% of the time, the craving is gone when the time is up.   I'll also give a +1 to what Blackadar said.  Find ways to not be around smoke.  Throw away everything that will enable you to smoke (lighters, ashtrays, etc.).  Start paying for gas at the pump so you don't have to go into the store.  Steer clear of bars for a few weeks.  Try not to put yourself in situations where you're around smoke and it will be much easier.

Here's something that's worked for me.  It takes 21 days to make or break a habit, so set a goal of 3 weeks without a cig.  Plan on buying yourself a new game or going to a nice dinner when you succeed.  If you can, make yourself accountable to someone else.  Tell them that you're trying to quit and have them keep check up on your progress.  (hell, we'll bug you if no one else will.   Tongue)  And don't give up if you slip up and have a cig.  A moment of weakness is no reason to quit trying.

My 3 week no-chew mark is coming up on Monday, and I have to admit that I'm more than a little bit proud that I've been able to do it.  I've scheduled a day off of work to play NWN2 & FF XII as my reward.  smile   You're doing the right thing and most of us know how tough it is.

see,if number 7 has sold so well...wouldnt it be BAD business...NOT to do a remake/updated version for current next gen?(or maybe toned down version for DS)

Despite Square's repeated denials, I would be very, very surprised if we didn't eventually see a FFVII remake for one of this hardware gen systems.  Hell, it would practically give them the license to print money, so why wouldn't they do it?  I do wonder, however, if they're waiting to do one until they see how the hardware wars shake out.  If the PS3 actually ends up as gloom and doom as some are predicting, maybe we'll see the remake on the PSP or DS instead.
