10641  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Stronghold Legends Impressions. on: October 21, 2006, 08:32:46 PM
Probably a bargin bin title for me, as there's too many other things coming out in the next couple weeks.  I somewhat enjoyed the first Stronghold (just started it again through Gametap), but the second one didn't do much for me.  Definately put up some impressions though, as I'm curious to see how they did.

Just finished a few minutes ago.  Certainly a fun little game with plenty of LOL moments (more towards the beginning than the end), and I'm looking forward to the next installment.

I'm now going on two weeks without a single soda.  It's getting a little easier, but not having one with my nachos while watching football is brutal.  I'm also quitting chewing tobacco at the same time (again, 2 weeks without one), so it's been tough.  These last two weeks have become the ultimate test of willpower for me, but I'm succeeding so far!   icon_biggrin

Heh.  The sound quality is actually very good, and I can't tell any quality difference between it and the iPod's I've listed to.  My understanding is that it was designed as an MP3 player first and phone second, which really shows.   There's a few minor quibbles I have with it (the playlist limit of 50 songs drives me nuts), but overall I've been very pleased with it.

Not sure what I'm going to play.  I'm pretty burned out on Okami & Titan Quest (about 30 hours into both), and don't really want to start anything new since NWN2 & FFXII are just around the corner.  I'll probably try and finish Sam & Max, mess around on Gametap games, play some Civ IV (I still haven't gotten around to trying that Fall From Heaven mod), and maybe brush up on Guitar Hero.

Put in my pre-order this afternoon and was very excited to get a link to the toolset.  Until I found out you have to DL 10 seperate 256 MB files, and their server is running at a blistering 210 kb/sec.

I'll be back sometime next week when I'm done DL'ing everything.  icon_frown

There were a few times that I laughed so hard I had to get up from my desk and tell my wife about it.

Mrs. Gratch actually stopped in the middle of the huge project she was working on to watch me play.  I can count the number of times that has happened before on 1 hand.

The only reason there aren't 2,000+ games on GameTap is because of the conversion process required to encrypt the games and get them to run right on Gametap.  I can tell you that when Gametap was in beta, they had already purchased nearly 2,000 games by that point. All they can TECHNICALLY manage right now is about 8-12 new titles per week.

If true* that is fantastic news.  I've been pleasantly surprised at how good the service is (I wasn't really expecting much), and yesterday's update was just epic.   My only problem is that with the huge selection, trying to find one or two games to stick with for any length of time is damn near impossible.

*No offense to you personally Kobra, but I take everything I read on the intarweb with a truckload of salt

It's been great so far.  The graphics are serviceable, but the voice acting and humor are simply fantastic.  Played for a couple hours and have already had quite a few LOL moments.  I'm having a blast so far and would highly recommend it.

I do realize, however, how badly I suck at puzzle based games.  I'm already stuck, so if anyone is playing it shoot me a hint:

I've knocked out Whizzer & Sybil, but I can't figure out how to get Specs.  I know it has something to do with spray painting his other graffiti's, but I don't know what.

Uh...talk about worthless. May I recommend Googling for MAME and your classic arcade titles and see what you can come up with? Odds are you'll be able to experience your favorite quarter-muncher properly that way.

Kobra's right, I'm just an idiot.  For some reason, it takes 3-4 presses of the start button on the gamepad for the continue to register, so I thought it just wasn't working.

10666  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekend Recap 16/Oct/06 on: October 16, 2006, 01:59:21 PM
I'm suffering from the worst gamer ADD I've had in years.  This weekend was:

-  Put about 3 hours into Okami.  Still really enjoy it, but it's starting to drag around 25 hours.
-  Spent all morning Sunday playing Civ IV.  Realized that I love the early to mid game, but hate the tedium of the end-game.  One of these days I'll get around to finishing one of my conquest maps.
-  Last night was all about Superstar Baseball 2 on Gametap.  I'd forgotten how great that game is.  Also played some Rastan and Golden Axe for nostalgia's sake.
-  Played tutorial missions on a bunch of other Gametap downloads.  Stronghold, Homeworld 2, Lords of the Realm III, Age of Wonders:  Shadow Magic, and Kohan II.  Probably the only one I'll actually play more of is Kohan II.
-  Fired up Titan Quest for about an hour.  Getting kind of bored with it (about halfway through Egypt)
-  Grabbed the 14-day World of Warcraft trial from Gamestop.  I've never tried it, but I figure I should see what all the fuss is about.  Took an hour to install and patch.  Played it for about 45 minutes and realized (again) that MMORPG's are just not my thing.  Uninstalled.
10667  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gametap Revisited on: October 16, 2006, 12:02:49 PM
Quick question:  Is there a way to enable the gamepad for newer games?  I really want to replay Prince of Persia & Beyond Good & Evil, but I didn't see anyway to enable my Logitec gamepad for them.  I can't imagine playing either of those on the keyboard.
10668  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Ideal Game Length For You? on: October 16, 2006, 12:01:01 PM
20-25 hours is perfect for me.   The only games that can hold my interest for much longer than that are good RPG's.  Even Okami, which is one of the best games I've played in years, is really starting to drag at the 25 hours mark.

Then we get FF XII and Guitar Hero 2 in a couple weeks.  Ugh (in a good way).

10674  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gametap Revisited on: October 14, 2006, 01:54:08 PM
After spending a night with it, I must admit that I'm very impressed.  I ran into a few issues (Tony Hawk 3 wouldn't recognize the thumbsticks on my gamepad, Robotron 2084 had no movement controls, etc.), but overall, doing some classic gaming was an absolute blast.  There were a few arcade gems on there that I had completely forgotten about and that brought back some great gaming memories.  Legendary Wings, Rastan, Strider, Altered Beast (wise fwom your gwave!!), Golden Axe, Rampage (I probably spent an hour on this one alone).  Good stuff.  I do have to admit that it is a lot harder to control these games with a gamepad than with a joystick, and some of them just flat out don't work without the stick.

Plus, when I get home from work today I'll have Worms:  Armageddon, Kohan II, Stronghold, Tropico II, Icewind Dale II, Midieval Conquest (a 'Majesty' clone), Age of Wonders:  Shadow Magic, Beyond Good & Evil, Pharoh, Cesar III, and Planescape:  Torment downloaded and ready to play.  I'd definately say I've gotten my money's worth already, and I've only had it a day.   icon_biggrin

It wasn't all roses, and I've got 2 minor complaints:

1.  It takes the regular games forever to download.  I've got a pretty fast cable connections, and most of the newer games were still taking upwards of 2.5 - 3 hours to download.  Seems like that's a really slow DL speed.

2.  Many of the arcade games aren't set up to allow you to continue your game, so you only get to play the equivalent of one quarter's worth.  Rather frustrating.

Plus, I've got Worms:  Armageddon, Kohan II, Stronghold, Tropico II, Icewind Dale II, Midieval Conquest (a 'Majesty' clone), Age of Wonders:  Shadow Magic, and Planescape:  Torment all downloaded and waiting for me when I get home tonight.  Gonna be a good gaming weekend.   icon_cool

I signed up for Gametap this afternoon, and the first game I played was Earthworm Jim 2.  It was one of my absolute favorites on the Genesis, and I loved playing it again.  About the time I was guiding a blind cave salamander around an intestinal tract, whilst dodging flying sheep and pinball bumpers, landing on pencils stuck into the intestine walls and listening to a classical Mozart theme playing in the background, it occurred to me that a)  Shiny was doing way too many drugs in the 90's and b) this is possibly the strangest game I've ever played.

So what game struck you as odd?

10680  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Odd question - Paying Bills? on: October 13, 2006, 06:41:05 PM
I write out bills once a week (usually Sunday), then mail them a few days before the due date.  If you have enough money to pay all your monthly bills on one day, then more power to ya.  I have to wait for paychecks to hit before stuff can get paid, so weekly works better for me.

I'm still in the stone age of writing checks for my bills instead of doing them online.  The paper trail helps keep me organized, plus I'm just too lazy to get things switched over to online.
