Is the bazaar global or separate for each store?  For instance, if you sell enough to one store to unlock its bazaar, does that open up the bazaar option for all stores or just that one?

I'm pretty sure the bazaar is global.  I've got a couple bazaar items that I unlocked in Rabanastre that are available at any vendor in the world.

going back there shortly, now that i've gotten some quickenings (re: which, is anyone actually taking the time to push specific buttons, or just basically mashing all of'm, as i am?)...

I know I'm doing something wrong with the Quickenings, as I don't have the slightest idea how the hell to actually pull one off.

On the other hand, I have my first Summon, and wow...what a power increase I suddenly have.

I also agree that the 'steal just to keep up with the joneses' aspect of the game is starting to get very tiring. The problem is that I need the money. You just don't get enough money/item drops (unless you run wild with the Chain system) without doing it. And I'm at the 22 hour point now.

Two questions:

1.  How/where do you pick up Summons?  Are they unlocked on the license board?
2.  Is there some trick to the Quickenings?   I have no idea what I'm atually supposed to be doing either.

Anyone know if there's a way to set up gambits so the character does an action only once?
For example, I want Vaan to steal once as his first action then attack the rest of the time.  The problem is he keeps stealing consecutively and I want him to stay concentrated on the leader's target.

16 hours in, and I have yet to find a Steal gambit that works well.  I tried the Foe HP=100%-->Steal, but that only works if you're fighting one enemy.  If you're fighting multiple foes, the person with that gambit will run around trying to steal from all of them until they've all been hit.

Mabye there's a Gambit later on that limits it to one action (i.e. Steal Once)?

About the hunts, is it just me or are they ridiculously hard after the first four? I've tried a number of them and I'm not even coming close to defeating these guys. I thought the hunts would be an amusing diversion form the storyline stuff, but they've become a pain and I'm skipping them for now.

Damn, this definately has me reconsidering. I didn't like the first NWN personally, so I am leary already about this one.  I'll wait for a couple of price drops, it seems a bit pricey at $50 in most locations.. I'll re-investigate it around the $30 pricepoint.

Don't base your opinion solely on this review.  It's utter shite.  That being said, I can't imagine that someone with an active dislike of the original NWN would enjoy NWN2 very much.

What was it that you didn't like about the original?  If it was the campaign storyline, that is supposedly much improved this time around.  If it was the actual gameplay, I'd probably steer clear until a price drop, as it's really pretty similar.

That was a painful read.  I could barely get through his first muddled paragraph:

Quote
As everything-the-original-did -- and more -- follow-ups go, Neverwinter Nights 2 deserves a banner & something like "mission accomplished." Think the sequel to Jurassic Park, where Spielberg's all "You want more dinosaurs? I'll show you more dinosaurs." As a contemporary CRPG, on the other hand, NWN2 leaves a lot to be desired, and that's too bad, because these are the guys who brought us Planescape: Torment and Icewind Dale 2 and therefore they are the guys I'm least inclined to take issue with.

I have issues aplenty with his review (why would you have someone with such an obvious negative bias toward the D&D system review a D&D based game?), and it's even harder to take him seriously when he writes at the third grade level.  It's hard to believe someone actually gets paid to write like that.
10573  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Final Fantasy XII Impressions on: November 03, 2006, 02:30:54 PM
I really disagree with much of the Game Trailer review.  For me, this story is one of the best I've seen in a long time, and the characters and world are extremely well-developed.   It sounded to me like the story just didn't click with that particular reviewer.  It is certainly a departure from the standard "angsty teen saves the world" theme of the last few FF games, but that's a very good thing imho.  It truly does feel like you're in the middle of an epic story and it does a great job at drawing you into the world.  The graphics are the best we've seen out of the PS2 and are extremely well done.

It also sounds from that review like they really didn't like the combat system.  While I can certainly understand that (different strokes and all), I think it's one of the best RPG combat systems I've ever played.  I was initially very apprehensive about the Gambit system, as it looked like the game would essentially be playing itself.  In practice, however, it is an extremely deep and flexible system that is a lot of fun to play.  It takes some getting used to (especially those of us used to FF's standard turn-based system), but I'm enjoying it more and more as I go and as the Gambits start to open up.  I'm still not entirely sold on the license system, but that's just personal preference.  I'm trying to specialize the characters as much as possible, but I'm a bit concerned I'm going to end up with a group of underpowered folks at the end.  Time will tell, I suppose.

Bottom line is this:  I'm 13 hours in, and would strongly recommend FFXII, even to those who have never played a FF game before.  FWIW, that review is very much in the minority, with most other reviews rating the story & combat as definate positives.

When did this happen?  It's always been 7 days on used games, iirc.
From the back of the receipt:

"Returns & exchanges of new and pre-owned mechandise will be accepted within 14 days of purchase."

Then they are using old receipt paper, because the stuff we use has no writing on the back except GS and EB logos.

Mine too.  No writing on the back and it says 7 days on the front.

This is a big problem at my store.  They are horribly understaffed, and even the slightest problem with a transaction leads to very long wait times.  The old manager told me they receive the same amount of schedulable hours as the stores that do 1/3 the amount of business.

The time it takes waiting on trade-ins kills me.  Feels like every time I'm trying to be quick because I've got my wife and daughter in the car I end up behind some guy trading in 40 bargain bin quality titles and his entire DVD collection only to find out that he's only going to get $24.92 in credit and then he has to take 15 minutes to decide whether he wants to do the deal or not.

What kills me is when people trade in systems.  No matter how many people are in line, the one employee behind the counter has to hook up the system, boot it up, and play it for a couple minutes before accepting it.

I got stuck behind one of these when I bought Okami.  I had the game pre-ordered and completely paid for, all I needed to do was pick it up.   The guy in front of me brought in a PS2, an X-Box, and a huge stack of games.   Of course, the idiot cashier couldn't be bothered to hurry his "testing" process, and was having a great time BS'ing with the customer while he messed around with the used systems.  He then used the credit to buy a 360, so of course they had to run the pre-order, warranty, & add-on gauntlet.  All told, it took close to 20 minutes before his purchase was complete, and there were probably 12 very pissed-off people in line by the time they were done.  When I got up to the counter, my transaction took a grand total of 30 seconds.  Needless to say, I was absolutely livid by the time I left the store.

Quote
And normally once you've become a 'regular' customer, the bullshit from the employees (like the original poster had) stops. The crew there sorta jokingly asks me if I want to preorder anything else for example whenever I make a transaction. They're required to do it, but they know that odds are I won't be doing so.

Unfortunately, my "regular" status at this store dissapeared when the last manager left.   Basically the entire staff was replaced except for one guy.  He still recognizes me and is a pretty cool cat (yesterday he told one of the other cashiers to quit bugging me about pre-orders), but I usually have to deal with what has their new crop of pushy, annoying, salesman.

The license discussion brings up an interesting question.  How are you guys developing your characters?  9 hours in, and I'm going with:

Vaan:  Melee Fighter (swords) with a few white mage abilities.  Not really sure which direction I want to take him yet.
Fran:  White & Green mage & bow specialist
Balthier:  Black mage and gun specialist.  He seems to be a bit low on MP, but maybe I can bump that up through licenses
Captain Basch:  Seems like a straight up fighter type.  Currently focusing on swords, shields, & armor.

Debating if I should have someone work with staves, or leave that for additonal PC's.  Hmmm...

I think Gamefaqs has a map of the license board if you want to plan ahead.

I gave it a 9.

+  Amazing graphics, both in-game and in-cutscene
+  Great characters
+  Extremely detailed and compelling story.  Makes you feel like you're in the middle of a huge conflict.
+  Revamped combat system is great, once you get the hang of it
+  Sweeping musical story that adds an 'epic' feel
+  Auto-map is awesome

-  Some of the VO work is spotty.  Bangaa's are very hard for me to understand, as is anyone wearing a helmet.

I really used to like my GS, but they've really started going downhill since the manager left a month back.  They've gotten way more pushy about pre-orders and 'upgrades' (i.e. regular edition to CE).  I usually pre-order games that I know I'll want or games that are niche titles, but I don't want to have some schlub pushing me on pre-orders I don't want.  The counter monkey asked me 4 seperate times if I wanted to pre-order Halo 3, even after I told him I have no interest in the Halo games.

I got to the store right when they opened to pick up FF XII on Tuesday.  I had pre-ordered, but there were two other guys there who hadn't.  The new manager told them they were lucky they showed up right at opening because they only had a couple non-reserve copies available, and that they better be sure to pre-order next time.  About 5 minutes later, I overheard him tell the other employee that the entire top shelf (must have been about 50 copies) were the non-pre-orders.  Nice.

Quote
However, I am starting to realize that I think it actually takes more time for me to get a game in a Gamestop because there are only 2 people in there tops and if people have trade-ins, which they usually do, it backs things up.

This is a big problem at my store.  They are horribly understaffed, and even the slightest problem with a transaction leads to very long wait times.  The old manager told me they receive the same amount of schedulable hours as the stores that do 1/3 the amount of business.

Picked it up last night (against my better judgement, as I don't think it will get much playtime) and played for about an hour. It felt a lot like NWN1 to me, which is a good thing. The graphics are certainly underwhelming, but it runs just fine on my system (XP 3400+, GF 7600GT, 1 GB RAM). at 1024 X 768. I wasn't terribly impressed with the voice acting, and the story seems like RPG 101, but I'm sure both will improve as I go. Used one of the pre-made fighter characters, but I think I'm going to start over with my own build tonight.

One quick question. In the first area (the town fair thing), I am supposed to pick-pocket a guy with the kid thief, but I can't figure out how to do it. The tutorial says to right click on the guy and use the 'Sleight of Hand' feat. I've tried this multiple times, but right clicking on him does nothing (yes, I have the thief selected). Am I missing something?

Yeah, the X-Axis stuff screwed me up too.  Took me about an hour to get used to it.  Very aggrivating.

WOW at the music in the game though, especially the stuff in the intro video and opening cutscene.  Had a very John Williams flavor to it and felt very unlike normal FF music.

FWIW, they used a new composer this time around.  Uematsu had done all the previous FF games, and they brought in Sakimoto (?) this time.  He had previously worked on music for the FF Tactics & Vagrant Story games.

Just put in about 9 hours and my brain is shot.  I'll put up some detailed impressions tomorrow, but if I were to sum it up in a few words, they would be:

This game is absolutely fantastic and deserves every bit of the glowing reviews it's receiving.   icon_biggrin

You would have to read the entire review to know what his doubts refer too, bit it is disheartening nonetheless.

I tend to take GI's reviews with a massive grain of salt as well, so that's understandable.  As Tebunker said, the reviews elsewhere have been overwhelmingly positive, so I'm awfully excited for it.

On a side note, I picked up the guide this afternoon and it weighs in a over 350 pages.  This thing is freaking huge!
