Possibly Jeanne D'Arc if I can get my hands on a used PSP.

Bioshock looks amazing, but I know my lack of FPS skills would make it nothing more than an exercise in frustration.   tear

I'm a little late to the party, but started EO this afternoon, and have spent a good 5-6 hours with it today.  I never really played any of the "old-school" games this was modelled after, but am still having a blast.  A couple questions:

1.  It seems like the enemy drops yield a pretty minimal amount of EN.  I'm just about through level 2 (party is 8th level), and am barely getting enough EN from level runs to rest at the inn, much less buy any decent items.  Is there anyway to increase either the amount of stuff dropped or the amount you get when you sell it?

2.  What's with the crystal doors?  I've seen one on levels 1 and 2, but can't seem to do anything with them.  Do they open up later?

3.  More of an observation than a question:  Jebus, this game is really hard.  Fun as hell, but absolutely brutal.  smile

10565  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Luminous Arc Impressions on: August 18, 2007, 03:18:50 PM
Quick impressions after an hour:

1.  I love the feel of the combat.  Yes, it's exactly like FFTA, but that's completely fine with me.  Bummer that it doesn't include any job class switching (at least that I've read), but it looks like there's enough variety with the characters to keep things interesting.  My only small gripe is that you can't choose character facing after taking an action.

2.  Doesn't look like you'll be able to abuse the XP system as easily as you could in FFTA.  Small actions (items, etc) only give 5-10 XP, so you really need to get people into the battles to level them up.

3.  I like that you gain back all your XP & MP at level up.  Combined with the large XP bonus for a final blow, it adds a new strategic layer to combat.

4.  I'd agree that the cutscenes are way too long.  I've played about an hour and a half, and at least 2/3 of that has been cutscenes.  On the plus side, the voice acting is really good.  Actually, it sounds pretty amazing coming out of the DS.

Sure it's formulatic and not particularly original, but I'm really enjoying it so far.  One question: is there a way to do random battles?  I'd like to grind out a few levels, but the only fights I've been able to do so far are the story based ones.

I have also seen Chuck Norris.  He came into a restaurant in Denver just as we were leaving.  Dude is tiny, but the tall leggy blonde he was with was absolutely amazing.  Should have gone over and said hi, just so I could get a better look at her.  Of course, he probably would have killed me with a salad fork.

They recently sent me back a replacement unit with a manufacture date 6 months older than the one I sent in to get fixed.    Hope you have better luck.

Does the serial number have any significance in terms of manufacture date (i.e. the higher the number the later the manufacture date)?  For example, I had a launch unit with a serial number starting with "4034--------" and the unit they're sending back has a serial number starting with "9015--------".  Here's to hoping that I get a newer unit.

I don't think so.   My original unit's number started with a 1, and the new (older) one starts with a 9.

It's going to be an all DS weekend for me.  My Blue Dragon pre-order money (I've decided to skip it for now) will be used to pick up Luminous Arc this afternoon, Etrian Odyssey is scheduled to arrive on Saturday, and I'll also be finishing this playthrough of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (I've been on the final battle for a couple weeks, just need to actually wrap it up).

Handheld gaming FTW!!

Oh, and I might get in some Planescape:  Torment, since I recently restarted that one as well.

Thanks for the impressions guys.  The lukewarm reviews were giving me pause, but it sounds like this one is right up my alley.  Even the bad reviews (like 1Up's) make it sound interesting for me.  As someone who has put nearly 200 hours into Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, something like this sounds exactly like what I'm looking for (from the review):

Quote
For all intents and purposes, Luminous Arc is a Final Fantasy Tactics clone. And not of the original, but of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, the Game Boy Advance installment from 2003.

It also seems like the user rankings on the bad reviews are much higher than the review scores, which indicates to me that it simply didn't click with the reviewer.  Looks like I'll be picking this one up this afternoon!  smile

My thoughts exactly.  The near constant grinding you had to do ended up boring me.

If by grinding, you mean fighting battles while doing nothing else, the only time you had to do that is the beginning, which I assume was done purposefully as a nostalgic throwback to the earlier games.  As long as you fully explore the overworld and dungeons, you can get through the game just fine.

I must not have done the dungeons correctly then, because even with many hours of grinding I was woefully underlevelled around 25 hours in.  That was about the point I quit.

Where'd you find a used one for $80, if you don't mind me asking.

Certainly not glowing

Spoiler for Hiden:
7.9

Looking more and more like I'll wait for a used copy.  Mainly because:

Quote
The amount of time you have to invest in Blue Dragon before the payout occurs is excessive by any measuring stick...For the first 10-15 hours Blue Dragon offers linearity, characters you know little about, and little in the means of interesting action or combat. It's not a far stretch of the imagination at all to think that a great number of gamers won't make it over this first hump.

Quote
If there were any type of worthwhile story or intriguing characters, I could look past some of the more lackluster aspects of Blue Dragon. But the story – the reason most folks pick up an RPG – is sophomoric and uninteresting.

Quote
Though it has some nice touches, Blue Dragon’s first disc (which will eat up 15 hours of your life) is a total snooze fest.

When people start saying the story is bad even in comparison to Dragon Quest games, you know it's really, really bad.  I know it was never supposed to be BD's strong point, but I can't see paying $60 for a game that's going to bore me to tears.

XS3 is the rare soundtrack that I'll listen to in the car.  Hell, it's the rare music that I listen to in the car since I mainly listen to podcasts.  Probably my favorite game soundtrack of recent years.  FF12's score is superb as well but I prefer it in the context of the game itself than on it's own.

All the Xenosaga soundtracks are pretty amazing.  I'm partial to the first because it was composed by Yasounori Mitsuda and performed by the London Symhony.  There are some amazing tracks on there.

I think I'll make it an all-game-music day today.  I've got the soundtracks for Tenchu, Beyond Good & Evil, Enihander, Final Fantasy IX Piano Collections, and Vagrant Story all lined up  smile

I know this is a subjective question, but about how many gaming hours do titles like that typically have?   Are we talking like 20 hours before you've finished the game, or is it normally much longer than that?

It obviously depends on the game, but I'd say most SRPG titles are longer than your average game.  I'd say they average 30-50 to just get through, and 70-100 hours for the completist.  Hell, between my 2 playthroughs, I've put nearly 200 hours into Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.

I was listening to "One" on the ride home yesterday. While I love the song, I don't really think it will be much fun to play in GH. Reminiscent of "Freebird", the front half will be slow and very easy, and the back half will be completely ridiculous. Hopefully they'll surprise us somehow.

GOTY Released in 2007

Puzzle Quest - Nothing really extraordinary has jumped out at me so far this year, so PQ takes the #1 spot by default.

GOTY Game Played but not released in 2007:

Toss up between Final Fantasy VI and Baldur's Gate II (PC)- I finally went back and finished both of these RPG classics this year.  There have been a million games that have come and gone since these two were released, but few have been better.  A couple of truly epic, incredible games.

Darkhorse That May Make A Charge:

Blue Dragon: The comparisons to Dragon Quest make me a bit wary (i.e. heavy on combat & exploration, light on story & characters)  but it looks gorgeous and the turn based combat system is right up my alley.  I also need to give Etrian Odyssey a try.

Anticipated GOTY After the Fall Releases:

Rock Band This is a complete no-brainer for me.  This could very well be my video game Nirvana...literally and figuratively.

I had fun with the demo, but it's not going to be an immediate purchase.  I'll probably get it after the New Year unless I blow through all the games that I plan on picking up quicker that I'm expecting to.

That's about where I'm at as well.  The demo was gorgeous, but I wasn't crazy about the combat system.  I also think (and I never in a million years would have imagined I'd say this) that it may be a bit too quirky for me.   The whole concept of the thing just puts me off for some reason.

I'll probably wait for it to pop up in the trading forum.
