The 'Pillow Pants' bit may be one of the best sequences in any of his movies.

+1.  I'm not sure I've ever laughed as hard in a movie as I did during that sequence.

Just picked up the DVD over the weeked and watched it a couple more times.  I really enjoyed it overall, although it wasn't as good as the original.

Maybe I'll continue the adventure in the future.

If it makes you feel any better, after my gushing opinion on Okami, I completely burned out on it about 25 hours in.  Not the typical slow burnout of "Man, this game is getting a little stale", but rather a complete drop-off-a-cliff burnout of sitting down one night and realizing I simply didn't have any more interest in playing.  I still think it was a fantastic game and stand by my original comments, but they tried to make it way too long which ended up causing me not to finish it.

I think Dante does bring up a good point.  My main cause of burnout with games is that something else is always grabbing my attention.  If a game starts to flag at all, I tend to ditch it and move on.  I just need to start ignoring new game hype and just stick with things I like.  Thankfully, my current 55+ hours into FFXII hasn't started to slow at all, so I might actually finish it!   icon_smile

We have a new contender: Guitar Hero II

I do not dig the song selection thus far. I have blazed through whatever song sets to get to Sweet Child of Mine and then what happens? A craptacular cover.  CRAPTACULAR!

Ditto Cherry Pie.

Thus far there are no songs that I haven't heard before that have me like: Man that's a cool song! Like the first game.

I'm sadly dissappointed in this game.

Huh.  I actually thought the G n' R cover was one of the better ones.  GH II certainly has more than it's share of clunkers (Mother, Killing in the Name Of, & Heart Shaped Box, I'm looking at you), but I don't think Sweet Child of Mine is one of them.

I didn't like it as much as the first GH, but it certainly doesn't make my "Most Disappointing" list.

EDIT:  Gah, can't spell today.

I got the chance to put in a 9 hour FFXII bender today, and am absolutely loving it!  Took me 55 hours, but I finallly figured out a few things that have been a huge help (how Quickening chains work, that multiple quickenings triple your MP).

One question:  How exactly do you equip a handbomb?  Balthier has the license for it, but it won't let me equip it.  Does it require ammo like the bow or gun?  If so, where the hell do you get it?  Also, is it a ranged or melee weapon?  I assume ranged, but really have no idea.
10567  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: F.U.R. - Final Fantasy XII [PS2] on: December 05, 2006, 02:28:11 AM
I'm upgrading my 9 to a solid 10.  I'm 56 hours in, and the game doesn't feel like it's dragging at all - which is probably a first for me.  I haven't even touched half of the side-quests or hunts, and am probably only about 3/4 of the way through the story, but I haven't gotten bored once.  Everything has come together very well, and FFXII is easily my GOTY.  I still think FFX just might keep the top spot on my list (mainly because I like the story better), but that kind of like saying the Lambroghini is slightly better than the Ferrarri.   icon_wink

FFXII is a solid game that is an absolute blast to play.

I spent all day yesterday and all night either over or on a toilet as well.  The only thing I've eaten since 11am yesterday is a small bowl of sherbet, and I can barely even keep down water.  I knew I was due for this, though, because everyone in my family has had t over the past week.  Mrs. Gratch, Dad, Mom, brother, sis-in-law, and their baby have all been hit with this same thing, so it was just a matter of time.

I'm taking the day off today and will hopefully be able to get a little sleep.  We'll see how that goes.

10571  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Dual monitor setup? on: December 02, 2006, 08:36:45 PM
Crossposted from OO

My boss is looking at purchasing the new Sony Vegas video editing software.  It's a pretty slick system, but he's decided rather than to spend the extra $$ on a new computer, he wants to use the one we currently have.  It's not a bad system, and will certainly have enough oomph to get the job done, but I'd really like to set up dual monitors on it.  Video editing windows take up a lot of desktop space, and having a dual set-up would be nice.

Forgive my ignorance, but do I need a specific video card to do this?  Or is there some sort of adapter I can plug into my current card that will allow me attatch two?  If I do need a specific card, can anyone recommend one (must be AGP).

Thanks in advance for the help!

System specs:

P4 2.8 Ghz
1 GB RAM (will be upgrading to 2 GB)
80 GB HD (will be adding a 250 GB)
Currently has a GF3 Ti 200 video card

The Xbox is already a very respectable system for RPG's. There are actually some gamers out there who don't care about JRPG's.

Yeah, and I am their king. Tongue If I have to see one more overrated, bug eyed, anime, JRPG, I think I am gonna be sick. It is easily my least favorite genre, and the genre of games that I feel are vastly overrated.

Give me Oblivion or a new KOTOR over any of this other junk any day of the week.

I'm completely the opposite.  Sure, there are bad JRPG's (just like any genre), but when done right I don't think there's anything better (see Shadow Hearts:  Covenant, the SMT series, FFX or XII, etc.)  I'm holding out a slim hope that some of the 360 RPG's will be successful enough to warrant more, but without the support in Japan, I just don't see it happening.  My guess is that, just like the original XBox, the 360 will end up the bastion of action, sports, and racing titles.  That's not a bad thing, just not my personal cup o' tea and one of the reasons I've hesitated on buying one.

I really enjoyed both KotOR games - mostly because I'm a Star Wars fanboy - but Oblivion got really stale after about 20 hours.  I felt like I was fighting the same dozen or so enemies (goblin, skeleton, troll, etc) in one of the same dozen or so locales (brown cave, grey stone ruin, white stone ruin, Oblivion plane, etc.) while doing the same tired quests (take a message to X, kill monster Y, get treasure Z) over and over and over and over again.  It wasn't a bad game by any means (I played long enough to finish the main quest.  Around 35 hours, iirc), but I have no idea how people can put hundreds of hours into that game.

As of now, I'll tentatively go with FFXII.   By far the most fun I've had with a game this year.  I'm not finished with it yet, so we'll see if it holds up, or if the lack of story in the last 10'ish hours is going to end up being it's downfall.

Two Runners-up (and why I didn't put them first):

Okami - If they had cut it at around 20 - 25 hours, this would be a shoe-in for not only GOTY, but possibly one of my favorites of all time.  Unfortunately, it seemed to run out of ideas and creativity toward the final third.  It was simply too long and the story started to get very dull after about 25 hours.  A shame, really, as it was a fantastic game.

Guitar Hero II - Don't get me wrong, GHII is a fantastically fun game.  Tough to say exactly what it was, but something about GHII didn't quite have the magic that GH did.  I think it was the combination of song selection, some genuinely awful covers, and my lofty expectations, but it didn't quite grab me like the first.

EDIT:  On the PC front, I need to add Civ IV, Gal Civ II, and Oblivion to the list

I dont understand people that say that about FFX? Were you just missing the story in there? FFX is constantly filled with great story, character interaction, etc. I mean, I am not busting on your Farscry, you know my obsession with FFX-its just..there is so much story!!

That's how I felt about FFX as well.  There was always something story-wise that kept pulling you forward.  There was also a lot more character interaction and dialogue than there has been in FFXII so far.

FWIW, it's only been the last 1/4 of FFXII I've played that has felt this way.  Hopefully the story will pick back up once I get to the next locale and  I can shake this feeling.

I would definitely say go to MGS1.  It, by far, for me, has been one of the best games I've played.  MGS2 just wasnt that good, IMO ad I'm still working on MGS3...

+1.  I absolutely loved MGS 1, and MGS 2 was a Day one purchase for me.  For some reason, it just never grabbed me like the original did, and I only ended up getting about halfway through it before getting completely bored.  I even tried it again a year or so later to see if maybe it just didn't "click" with me the first time around, and came away with the same opinion.

I tried MSG3 when it first came out, but didn't really care for it either.  To be fair, however, it came smack in the middle of a glut of other games and I didn't really give it much of a chance.  I remember getting frustrated very early on and just never going back to it.  It's one I've been meaning to try again but just haven't gotten around to it.
10581  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: How have the Next Gen shortages affected your buying? on: November 27, 2006, 06:29:03 PM
Not a bit, but I'm not usually an early adopter anyways.  There's no real "killer apps" for me with any of the systems, so I haven't really felt the urge to run out and get one.

On a side note, the defective unit horror stories have been the biggest reason I haven't pulled the trigger on a 360 yet.  I'm holding out to see if they might be able to sort out some of the technical issues before I buy.

I'm hitting a point of frustration right now in the way the game is progressing.  I'm 43 hours in and am currently:
Spoiler for Hiden:
sneaking back into Arcadia
.  Problem is, it seems like they completely abandoned the story around 10 hours ago.   It's felt like a tacked on 5 minutes of story for every 1-2 hours of fighting.  I've lost any sort of emotional investment in the characters, as they're essentially just shuttling me from one place to the next.  Compare that to, say, FFX or Shadow Hearts where the main impetus behind continuing is wanting to know what happens to the characters you have come to care about.  Hell, half the time I don't even remember why I'm going to the next section, only that it's where the game is pushing me.  Thankfully, I still really enjoy the combat & levelling aspects, so I'm sure I'll keep playing.

After such a strong start to the story and characters, having it completely abandoned like this is extremely dissapointing.   Does it pick up at all, or should I just get used to this?
10585  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Working tech support has given me no hope for mankind. on: November 27, 2006, 04:36:43 AM
That's tough man, I feel for you.

I'll admit that I get extremely grumpy when I'm on hold for a long time, then am connected to someone who a) doesn't know how to do anything but read from a script and needs to "elevate" the call (which requires even more on-hold time), or b) can't understand/speak English.  Also, keep in mind that people have sometimes been incorrectly transferred two or three times before they get to you (I get that alot at my job), so they're understandably frustrated.  Hopefully these don't apply to your situation, but if they do, it may explain a bit why people are difficult.

As a general rule, though, people are just assholes.    icon_wink

Edit:
Major Nelson confirmed that they are having big network problems with the downloads and they are working on it, and MS is offering to refund $$ for anyone who's having problems downloading.  Guess it wasn't FF after all smile

I honestly don't think I'd be able to use a Wii in my gaming space.  My couch and TV are only about 5-6 feet apart, and there really isn't room for any sort of exaggerated movements.  I think it would be very difficult for the sensor to read movement when you're practically standing on top of it.

I've been slowly losing interest in the Wii anyways, so it's not a big loss.
