Boy, I sure am glad I sold my PS2 Guitar Hero so I could get the 360 version.  I love getting these new 80's tracks, as well as having access to all that awesome, reasonably priced DLC content!

Oh, wait...   icon_evil

Looks pretty impressive (those overworld map scenes looked like they were right out of FF VII), but the whole fast-paced, real-time combat system doesn't interest me in the slightest.  That was also the most annoying voice acting I've heard in a long time.  I couldn't even get through the 3:00 trailer without hitting mute.

Just out of curiosity, do replacement 360's count in the NPD totals?  (sorry if this has been addressed before)

Debating whether I want to re-buy Civ IV for the third time in order to play BtS.  You'd think that one of these times I'd just hold onto it.

How cheap can CIV4 be had? When I heard about a brand new Space scenario I was all like "omfg Hi 2 U!!"

You can get Civ IV + Beyond the Stars for $50 on Steam.  They also have a pack for $75 that includes the core game and both expansions.

Microsoft's growing troubles with the Xbox 360 video game console appear to be catching up to the company. Sales of the gaming machine plunged 60% in the fiscal fourth quarter, Microsoft disclosed Thursday.

In its earnings statement for the quarter, Microsoft said it shipped 700,000 Xbox 360 units during the period, compared to 1.8 million in the fiscal fourth quarter of 2006 -- a fall off of 61%.

Microsoft's Xbox operations are housed within the company's Entertainment and Devices Division. The group saw fourth quarter revenue drop 10% year-over-year to $1.16 billion on an operating loss of $1.20 billion. The group lost $423 million the previous year.

Ouch.

It'd be interesting to see what the sales drop-off is attributed to.  Lack of AAA titles?  Dependability issues?

Not knowing what you may or may not have already played, here's a couple more suggestions:

Shadow Hearts & Shadow Hearts:  Covenant
Final Fantasy X
Xenosaga
Dragon Quest VIII
Disgaea
Tenchu (the first PS2 one, the others sucked)
Culdcept
Katamari Damacy
Any of the Shin Megami Tensai games (not my favorites per se, but certainly worth a look if you're an RPG fan)

::raises hand::

I really think that if Okami had been 20 hours, it would be one of the greatest games I have ever played on any system.  Unfortunately, they felt the need to drag it out into the 40+ hour range.  Everything after about 25 hours just felt like padding to me, and I pretty quickly lost interest.   The story became rather dull, the puzzles were uninspired, and the "wow" factor of the graphics started to wear off when they recycled artwork for different areas.

I think that it was still a solid A game, but the length keeps it from being the all-time classic that it could have been.

EDIT:  It's still the only game I've ever made a post like this about.  smile
10416  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Odin Sphere on: July 21, 2007, 03:33:07 AM
Finally got around to starting this tonight.  I'm completely floored by the artwork, and this ranks right up with Okami on the amazing visuals scale.  Just got past the first big dragon boss (man, that guy was tough!), and am liking it so far.  I completely suck at it, mind you, but it's pretty fun.

A couple questions:

1.  It says I have 68 gold in my pouch, but the store vendors won't let me buy anything.  My gold total always shows up as a big red zero in the shopping screen, but a 68 in the inventory.    I'm confused.

2.  Do you have to be standing on top of a plant for it to grow?  I've planted seeds at the beginning of a couple levels, but they only seem to grow when I collect while standing right on top of it.  Since you need to move around a lot in order to fight, that makes things a bit tough.

I've never even heard of Persona 1 or 2.

They were on Playstation 1.  Person 2, in particular, was a very rare (and sought after), expensive game until it received a limited re-release a few years ago.

Thanks for the info.

I'm interested, but have had a really hard time getting into any of the Shin Megami Tensai games.  I always enjoy the artwork, style, and story, but for some reason the battle systems have really rubbed me the wrong way.  Doesn't look like this one is much different, so I'll regrettably be giving it a pass.  Besides, I've got my fair share of quirk with Odin Sphere arriving this week.

I'm all for old-school graphics charm (which the original Disgaea had in spades), but I'd tend agree with KePoW.    You'd think they would make at least a token effort to use some next-gen processing power, instead of simply churning out the same old early-gen PS2 graphics yet again.

Sounds similar to the way my last two died.  Would just freeze after a few minutes.  It would have some visual artifacts when it froze.  I figure that the graphics card was overheating.

That was my thought as well.  If that's the case, it speaks volumes as to how poorly they're designed.  This system is sitting right next to an A/C vent and is completely out in the open.  There shouldn't be any heat issues with it at all.

Well, so much for playing any GHII for the next month.  My system officially died last night.  No matter what I did with it (dashboard, games, DVD's, Live Arcade, etc.), the system would simply freeze up after 10-15 minutes.   After 90 minutes on the phone last night (60 minutes on hold, another 30 minutes answering questions), they agreed to send me a coffin and my system will be on it's way.  Here's how the conversation went:

MS Rep:  So what is the problem.
Me:  My 360 freezes up within 10-15 minutes, no matter what I'm doing.  No errors or red lights, all I can do is reboot.
MS Rep:  Could you tell me more about the freezing.
Me:  It completely locks up.  I can't do anything but reboot.
MS Rep:  Are you getting any error messages?
Me:  No, it simply locks.
MS Rep:  Are you getting any red lights?
Me:  No
MS Rep:  Describe the freezing.
Me:  Um...it freezes up.  Nothing works.  I have to reboot.
MS Rep:  Can you describe the screen when it freezes?
Me:  It locks.  It stops.  It freezes.
MS Rep:  Do you see anything strange on the screen.
Me:  No.  It just stops.
MS Rep:  So you're saying it freezes, correct?
Me:  Yes.
MS Rep:  Is it doing anything else?
Me: Nope.  Just locking up.
MS Rep:  Could you describe how it looks when it locks up...

This same series of questions must have repeated itself at least 3 times during the conversation.  I was about ready to tear my hair out by the time she finally said "Sounds like a hardware error (no shit!).  We'll need to replace your unit".

I figured I'd be safe, as my unit is in a very well-ventilated area (sitting on top on a TV stand with nothing around it), the power brick is isolated by itself, and it really gets very light use (a couple hours of GHII a week).  Apparently these things go into the shitter even if situations are optimal.  I was told it would be 4-6 weeks before I got anything back, so I'm hoping it's repaired by the time Blue Dragon hits.   frown

It would be considered interference and the pitch would not count and the runners cannot advance. Besides, it was spring training. As for the ASPCA, that was David Winfield because it was an intentional throw at the bird. I don't listen to Rome often, but I am in Arizona and don't recall that Randy was ever in any trouble. He was rather upset about it.

On Aug. 4, 1983, Yankees outfielder Dave Winfield killed a seagull in Toronto with a warmup throw. The Ontario police charged him with animal cruelty, although the charge was later dropped.

That's the one I was thinking of.  Thanks Java.

Well they finally picked up, and now I'm more confused than I was when I started.  During the course of our conversation, I was told all of the following:

1.  The extended warranty extends 2 years from the end of the manufacturer's warranty.
1a.  The extended warranty extends only from the date it is purchased.

2.  The extended warranty will cover any repairs, no matter how many times you have to send the system in.
2a.  I will need to buy a new warranty policy if (when) I have to send in my system for service.

3.  I cannot purchase the extended warranty until 90 days prior to the end of the original warranty (which is April 14, 2008)
3a.  I can purchase the extended warranty today.

The guy contradicted himself at least 5 different times during the conversation.  I was so frustrated by the end that I just gave up and figured I'd call back tomorrow and hope for someone else.

Can any of you guys that have had warranty issues help a brother out?
10435  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / XBox 360 warranty questions (and "support" gripes) on: July 16, 2007, 11:31:14 PM
I want to extend the warranty on my most-likely-soon-to-be-dead 360, and also to turn off the auto-renewal for my Live subscription.  I called their 800 # and asked for the billing department.  I figured since they're the ones that take my money, they'd be the ones to answer my warranty questions.  A nice rep picked up within 2 minutes and turned off the auto-renew within a couple minutes.  However, he said I would need to talk to someone in their technical department in order to answer any warranty questions.  He would transfer me.

That was at 4:55 MST.

It's now 5:30 MST, and I'm still on hold.  At this point, I've just put the phone on speaker and figured I'll leave it until someone answers.  The sad thing is, after they answer my two simple questions (1.  Does the extended warranty start from the purchase date or the date the manufacturer warranty expires?  2.  If/When my current system dies and they send a replacement, does the warranty period extend on this replacement unit for the full 2 years?), they'll probably have to transfer me back to the billing dept to take my money.   it'll be interesting to see how long I have to stay on hold...

10438  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Who's more excited about Guitar Hero 3 than Rock Band? (why?) on: July 16, 2007, 01:02:22 PM
Both Rock Band and GH3 will be day one purchases, but I'm far, far, far more excited for Rock Band.  Everything I hear and see about Rock Band makes it look better and better (weekly downloads, full albums, the drumset, etc.), while everything about GH3 is the exact opposite (ridiculous boss battles, incredibly stupid random "powerups", questionable DLC, etc.).  Rock Band seems to be doing it right in that they're simply making it all about the music.  No gimmicks, nothing silly, just a game that actually makes you feel like you're playing an instrument in a band.  GH3 seems to be trying to hammer home the point that you are, in fact, just playing a video game on a silly plastic guitar.  It's a subtle difference in principle, but a huge one in execution.  Those Harmonix guys certainly know what they're doing.  smile

It's been an interesting shift, as I was originally far more psyched for GH3 and thought Rock Band was just silly.  Funny how things can change.
