10285  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PSP Slim hands on video on: August 08, 2007, 02:12:45 PM
Have they announced any pricing for this new model yet?  Also, do we know if there will be any price drops on the older model when the new one comes out?  Most of the new features of the "slim" model wouldn't really be applicable to me, so I might just pick up one of the current gen.  95% of my "portable" gaming is done sitting on my couch with the until plugged in, so battery length and/or size don't really matter.  The TV-out would be nice, but certainly not necessary.

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm actually becoming interested in a PSP again.   Between FF Tactics, Brave Story, Disgaea, and Jean D'Arce, it looks like there's finally some good handheld gaming to be had for us JRPG fans.  smile

10287  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Why the 360 fails on: August 07, 2007, 02:38:09 PM
The 360 is the first console I've ever had a problem with.  I've still got a launch PS2, a working PS1 that is around 11 years old, my XBox 1 worked for years before I sold it...hell, even my Atari 2600 and original NES are still kicking!  Yet my very gently used 360 craps out after not even 6 months.

It's sad that such an awesome console with so much potential has been hamsturng by piss-poor design.
10288  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: And so my 360 comes to an end... on: August 07, 2007, 12:01:10 AM
Just received an e-mail that my unit is being shipped back today, and I'll have it on Thursday.

I take that back.  A unit is being shipped back to me, but it's not my original one.  They include the serial number of the unit in the shipping confirmation e-mail, and it's different than the one I sent back to them.   I'm hoping for a new unit and not a refurb, but am certainly not holding my breath.  Assuming it arrives Thursday, total turn around time will be 3 1/2 weeks from the time I reported it, to the time I get it back.  Not too bad, really.

One question:  Does a unit with a new serial number cause problems when the old hard drive is hooked up to it?

10290  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Final Fantasy VII is 10 years old - replay anyone? on: August 06, 2007, 06:55:40 PM
I'm feeling a little guilty about ditching this replay effort, but getting back into Baldur's Gate II has sucked up most of my gaming time for the past couple months.   Since it has always been on my "I will finish this someday" list and FF VII has already been completed twice, BGII ended up taking precedence.

I'll probably jump back into FF VII eventually, but there's a couple other things distracting me right now.

this is one of my favourite scenes in FF8,the dance, quite near the beginning

the ball

That ballroom sequence is still one of my favorite scenes of any Final Fantasy game.

While it may be my least favorite game of the "modern" (post VII) FF series, I think it easily has the best soundtrack.  Probably Uematsu's best work to date, IMO.  You'd be hard pressed to find a better opening song in any game than "Liberi Fatali".

I need to get around to finishing this one as well.  I got about to the same point, then just got too damn fed up with the Draw mechanic.   I did think the Junction system was very cool, and rather liked the story and most of the characters.  Except Zell, that dud annoyed me to no end.

Looks like I'll need to hit e-bay and see if I can track down a copy.

So I just got my EGM, and I am definitely OUT on Blue Dragon, sounds like the battle system has some neat twists, but the lack of a compelling story, hook, or likeable protagonists is what killed the game for the reviewers.

Hmmm, that raises some major red flags with me.  I can forgive a lot of gameplay issues if the story and characters are compelling, but not the other way around.  I'll be interested to see what other reviewers have to say about it.

EDIT:  Looking at the aggregate scores so far, EGM certainly seems to be an anomaly.   Either the devs really screwed something up between the Japanese and US versions, or it simply didn't click with EGM's particular group.

That's down from when I sent in mine a couple weeks ago.  At that point it was 4-6 weeks.  My unit has been shipped back and confirmed received, but I have no idea where in the repair/replace process it is.  I'll be pretty surprised if I get it back before the end of the month.  Good thing there's nothing being released that I'm absolutely dying to get.

I loved the initial song announcement .  The game certainly isn't in "dislike" territory yet, but I am really questioning their decisions.  I just think they're taking the series in some pretty poor directions, both with this weak (imho) announcement of tracks and the design decisions (boss battles, power ups, etc.).  The DLC fiasco and PS2 exclusivity for this gen certainly haven't helped strengthen any loyalty towards the brand either.
