Is this an exact remake of Tactics on the PS1 or a new story altogether?

Remake, with a few added extras.  The main addition is the animated cutscenes, which look amazing.  They also added 2 new classes and a couple of unlockable characters.

SH:Covenant was an incredible game, and I'm really disappointed to see so many people agree that SH: From the New World pales so badly in comparison. I absolutely loved the characters and cut scenes in Covenant, and was thrilled to see that you could go back and watch them after the game. I really wish RPGs would tell stronger stories.

Part of the disappointment with New World stems from the fact that Covenant was just so damn good.  It would have been hard to follow it up no matter what, but what they did release was extremely sub-par in comparison.  One of the things I really liked about the first 2 SH games was that they bucked the RPG trend of "teenage kids save the world".  Yuri was quite the bad-ass, and his supporting cast was equally as strong.  The move to a whiny kid as the main character felt like a complete opposite, and really turned me off.  New World also really lacked a strong bad guy.  In the nearly 12 hours I played, I had no idea who I was fighting against or why I was fighting them.  There were some hints and vague references, but the evil characters were very poorly developed.  Again, a huge shift from the first two games.

Quote
This is part of the reason why I'm willing to give Lost Odyssey a chance despite the rumors that it is massively slanted toward "watching the game". If someone could someone fuse the tightly-wrapped, detailed stories in adventure games (minus the obtuse puzzles) and RPGs I'd really be ecstatic.

I agree about Lost Odyssey.  If it's 20 hours of good storytelling through cutscenes, then I have no problem with it.  I have little faith, however, in the ability of an RPG developer to be able to do this.  Games that tell a truly compelling story with great characters are few and far between.

Sounds like we have similar tastes (my 2 faves are also FFX & Shadow Hearts), and I'd definately recommend Final Fantasy XII first.  I typically burn out 30-40 hours into RPG's, but FFXII kept me going for nearly 80.  It's really an incredible game.  If you can handle the ridiculous encounter rate, the Digital Devil Saga games are also very good.

As far as ones to avoid, I'd stay far, far away from Shadow Hearts: From the New World.  (Eddie will disagree with me here, but I'm sticking to it!  smile) Especially if you enjoyed the first two.  The combat is somewhat fun, but the characters and story that made Covenant so amazing are replaced by a whiny teenage lead and a complete and utter snoozefest of a story.  I also didn't care much for Rogue Squadron, but I'm not big on action-RPG's in general.

10288  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS2 games for a 41-year-old gaming n00b? on: October 08, 2007, 08:36:02 PM
My boss turned 41 on Saturday, and his wife bought him a PS2 along with Guitar Hero for his b-day.  He tried it at a party a couple weeks ago and absolutely loved it, so they took the PS2 plunge.  Now, this is a guy who has never owned a game system, and hasn't played a single video game (other than Guitar Hero) since the original NES.  He asked me for some suggestions on other stuff he should check out, and I was honestly pretty stumped.  Here's what we're working with:

-  Won't have a ton of time, so short-burst gaming will be a must
-  Has 3 young kids at home, so games must be at least somewhat age appropriate (i.e. no GTA or Manhunt games)
-  Not having the gaming background that most of us have, anything with overly complex controls is going to be an issue.  My guess is that any FPS will be out (I've been gaming for 30 years and still can't get the hang of them), and the simpler the controls the better.
-  He's not into anything japanese, so quirky RPG's or stuff like Katamari Damacy is probably out
-  He likes sports, but complex controls and a million different buttons might be a problems.

I know it's a tall order, but let me know if you can come up with any good suggestions.  I'm going to pick up a Burnout game for him, but racing games are about the only thing I could think of.

I really only notice it when it's completely over the top.  In those cases, it's more annoying than anything.  Seeing ads in games does nothing to make it a more "real world" experience, imo.

Then again, I don't typically play the sort of games that use much.  Not much in-game advertising in RPG's.  smile
10293  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Preview] Guitar Hero III on: October 08, 2007, 01:18:38 AM
This may have already been answered, but will the wireless guitar that comes with GHIII be compatible with Rock Band (the 360 version)?  I wasn't planning on picking it up, but the couple previews I've read make it out to be a vast improvement over the Xplorer.  And wireless would be very nice, since Vader seems to really enjoy the "jump back-and-forth over the cord" game.

10297  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Oh Snap! Phantom Hourglass is Out! Impressions abound! on: October 07, 2007, 11:20:48 PM
I put another hour or so into this today.  I know it's innovative, creative, and I should like it, but Zelda:  PH does absolutely nothing for me.   Every puzzle is an exercise in frustration, and having to restart that timed Ocean King temple twice certainly didn't do anything to help.  Even after playing a few hours, I still feel like I'm fighting against the controls.  It basically boils down to the fact that I don't find it to be very fun.

I knew I probably should have avoided PH, but it looked like it might be unique enough to break the string of Zelda titles that apparently everybody loves but me.  Glad I gave it a shot, but it just confirms once and for all that I need to stop buying Zelda games.

It's up for grabs in the trading forum, if anyone wants it.

I'm pretty sure my subscription is up this month, and I'll probably renew with this deal.  Some of the games they're offering are $60 just by themselves, so it's kind of a no-brainer.

The cooldown timer actually is a good improvement.  The game is challenging but isn't savagely so.  If you guys have questions I can answer them....

The schizophrenic difficulty was really my only gripe about PQ.  I actually had to dial down the difficulty early on, but the final third of the game wasn't even a challenge.  I'll be interested to see how these changes affect things.  As long as they don't make it ridiculously hard, I'm cool with it.  I'm definitely going to get the XBLA version.  Having only played the DS flavor, I can't wait for the upgraded graphics.

How are the controls with an X-Box controller?  Both the DS stylus and mouse controls are perfect, but I'm a bit concerned about trying to use a gamepad.  Especially when you need to move fast.

One example of this is the spell timer. Some spells now have a cool-down time attached to them, so you can't necessarily cast them every turn; you have to wait from one to five turns for them to become available again. This makes the game fresh and interesting because a lot of the most powerful spells now have this tradeoff. You'll find improvements like this all through the game.

Can't say I'm crazy about this.  The early and mid-game were challenging enough without having restrictions put on what spells you can cast.

Played an hour or so last night (first couple levels of the Fire Temple), and am trying to decide if I like it.  My biggest problem is that I'm having a hell of a time getting it to correctly register my inputs.  Moving leads to sword slashes more often than not, the circle attack only registers about half the time, and somersaulting is completely hit and miss.  While it's not that big of a deal now, I can see where it's going to be a major problem later on.  There have been a couple times where being able to use the D-pad for movement would have been a godsend.  Getting stuck in a room with multiple enemies and trying to maneuver around them while attacking proved to be rather...interesting.

Still, it's pretty unique and I'll keep my fingers crossed that i get more comfortable with the controls as I play.

Too lazy to search on what games you like, but Jeanne D'Arc is the best game I've played on any system this year.

I went with the old version, since you can find a used one for around $120.  There's not anything about the new ones that seems to be worth the extra $$.

Both GS's in my are are severely understaffed, and there is almost always a 10-15 minute line to check out.  If someone is trading in multiple games or - god forbid - a system, you'll be there forever.   They used to be really good about not hassling people for pre-orders, not hoarding copies of games, and being generally knowledgeable folks.  But when both stores got new managers, they both promptly went to shit.  Some of you may remember my God of War pre-order disc adventure, and that's the type of "service" that is now the norm.

Trust me Shifty, your store is most certainly the exception rather than the rule.

And in the process, you're giving them an interest-free loan.  It's win-win! slywink

I wouldn't say it's any more convenient, but I'll occasionally pay pre-orders in full if I have the money right then.   That way I'm not tempted to spend it on something else before the game comes out.

I got a work bonus last week and used it to pre-order GH3, Rock Band, Mass Effect, and FF Tactics paid n full.  If I hadn't done that, I'm sure I would have just frittered it away on other stuff before those games actually got released.  Of course, this is the first time I've ever pre-ordered this much stuff at once.

I'm not really boycotting them.  I just know they won't sell me a copy if I haven't pre-ordered, so I shop elsewhere for games on release week.

I'm really not even opposed to pre-orders and do them from time to time (mainly on niche titles).  It's their stance of "absolutely no sale unless you pre-order" that irritates me and causes me not to shop there for impulse buys.  Why not just order a few extra copies and quit being dicks about it?
