2043  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / Any interest in a Creative Jukebox 2? on: July 27, 2004, 03:58:54 PM
I have a Creative Jukebox 2.  It's roughly a year old and works great, but it's about 10 GB, and I am starting to need more space.

If someone is interested in this, I also have a carrying case that goes around the waist for it that I would include with it.

Just curious if anyone else would be interested in this.

2047  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 60-Minute Shakedown on: July 22, 2004, 04:22:41 PM
Here is my "60-Minute Shakedown" for ESPN NFL 2K5.

I paged through the manual before playing the game.  Although the manual isn't thick, it gives the basics of the controls.  Those who have played 2K4 won't have any problems getting into the game, as they seem to be similar to last year's controls.  A more in-depth manual is apparently on the DVD, but I didn't check it out.

Nothing short of amazing.  The players look very close to their real-life counterpart.  Playing it on an HDTV does help the game to look better.  The crowd looks much better than last year's "pogo-stick" people from Madden.  While playing at Lambeau, it didn't look exactly like it, but it was close enough to feel like you were there.

The animations seem to be more varied.  The tackles definitely are more varied.  I've seen wrap arounds, single leg grabs, and arm grabs, among others.  After the play is over, the other players help the tackled player get up realistically.  Once when this happened, the player was pulled up almost too hard.  He actually was in the air for a second or two.  The ESPN Transitions also help to give the illusion of a broadcast.  The replays look fantastic too.  Touchdown celebrations, sideline ribbing, and fan participation are all a part of the game.

That being said, there are a few issues.  After the play, there can be some slight slowdown.  It didn't happen often, but it did happen.  Also, some of the players' arms seemed to be a bit thin on the character models.  Nothing significant though.

With the ESPN graphics also comes the ESPN sounds.  Anyone familiar with an ESPN broadcast will be familiar with the sounds.  Again, these help to give the illusion of a broadcast.

There is plenty of chatter during the game.  Hard counts do sound hard, and each hit can be heard.  The positional audio is incredible, and those with 5.1 Dolby Surround will be rewarded with realistic sounding hits in the right positions.

Custom soundtracks are available to be made.  I personally can't wait to put P.O.D.'s "Boom" as part of a sack.  However, other sounds are used if you don't have them set up.  At Lambeau, the infamous "GO PACK GO" was used to rally the crowd.

Rick Berman's voice does have some problems with some fluctuations during his reports, but his voice is like that as well in real life, so it wasn't too distracting.

The banter of the announcers works well and is smooth as butter.  I never had the announcers playcalling contradict what actually happened on the field.

I played using the Packers at home versus the Lions using the default settings.  Some things were instantly noticable.  The running game is much better.  Last year it was easy to run up the middle and get 7-8 yards with Ahman Green.  While he still can get large drives, the defense is much tougher.  Also, in the first half, the Lions had the ball and were driving.  They called time outs realistically.  Not only that, but you could see the player with the ball calling TO after he was tackled.

There also seems to be more variety in incomplete passes.  Last year was a dropfest with the catches.  Now the receiver can run the wrong route, or the ball can be tipped.

The amount of penalties should probably be turned up a bit from what I saw.  No holding or offside calls were made.  The only penalty I saw in the game I played was when I ran my linebacker into the WR.  The play led to an interception, but I knew that it would be called back.

After each play, the screen shows what happened on the previous play, with the key player's picture in the box.  It also gives what direction the play was made.

Those who didn't care for the playbook or the display of the playbook probably won't care for this year's version, as that didn't change from last year.  I did feel like I had to call my defensive plays quicker than I did in 2K4.

Different "celebrations" are available, and those can be changed in the menu options.  It's definitely a nice touch.  However, scoring a touchdown feels a bit anti-climatic as there isn't any scoreboard "TOUCHDOWN!" graphic or anything like that.

A training mode is available.  It is useful for getting used to the different buttons, but it still seems to be a bit lacking.  Other than knowing you did the move correctly, there isn't really a way to hone your skills.  Some kind of contest with a score would have been nice.

The Crib is huge.  Two stories to deck out.  I even got a "call" to play against David Arquette.  The game simulates his style using the VIP system.

The VIP system shows how you balance play calling between run and pass, and shows the direction you run your pass and running plays.

This seems to be a great game for $20.  It will be even cheaper next week, so it will be time to bring in those pricematches.  There is a lot of depth to the game, and the gameplay does seem to be realistic.  Admittedly, the squables with the game are minor.  It is still a great football game.  Madden will have a run for its money this year, especially since they are charging $50 for it.

As long as the shirt itself was white, and not black (as we Arizonians would simply die out there), I do believe I'd be interested.

But I'm with Tebunker - a small logo on the front pocket, full sized thing on the back.

Personally, I like black...but that's just me.  Then again, I'm in Wisconsin, where there are four seasons:  cold, colder, freezing, and construction.

I like the idea of the logo on the back.  What about a long sleeve denim shirt for the winter, or even a short sleeve one?  Maybe just have the logo on the front.  I'm guessing they'd be more expensive, but a good denim shirt is worth the price.

Well, there was Metal Dungeon.  However, it was pretty much universally panned by all reviewers.

2053  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / A thread after my own heart on: July 06, 2004, 06:21:44 PM might want to check the spelling of "superior" in your sig.

ESPN Football has been supeior to Madden since it's debut on the Dreamcast. Never let anyone tell you different.
2054  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Madden/ESPN NFL on: July 06, 2004, 03:24:34 AM
Hmmmm....I remember the year's of the completely brain dead AI of the defense of Madden.  Cornerbacks were completely useless.  Constant dropping during online games (of the PC version).  The uninspired mumblings of Madden during the game.  Choppy annimations during ball catches.  ESPN brought the first-person mode last year.  While I wouldn't want to play every game that way, it definitely gave you the feeling of being under the helmet and gave you a new respect for the players who actually play the game.

Here's one thing that sets apart this year's Madden from this year's ESPN.

ESPN built on the ground up for the Xbox, ported to the PS2.

Madden built on the ground up for the PS2, ported to the Xbox.

ESPN this year simply looks amazing.  While Madden isn't bad, most of the complaints that people have usually come from Madden fanboys that haven't given the 2K series a fair shot.
2055  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Which XBOX games support widescreen? on: July 02, 2004, 08:06:59 PM
Eco, to get any of the HDTV lovin' goodness, you need the MS HD AV pack.  Once you have that in, you will change the dashboard to widescreen.  Once that is done, the games automatically detect your settings.

You will plug in the MS HD AV pack into the Pelican System Selector Pro component inputs, and then the System Selector into the TV.  You will need component to get the 16:9, unless you play the game with everything "stretched."  It won't be high definition though.

I would be tempted but buy the Farscape DVD's if they came in a season set.  I'm not one of those that likes to buy individual discs.  Maybe I'll eventually rent one.

I watched Firefly when it was on.  It was good, but I just couldn't justify buying the DVD series.  I guess it just didn't click with me like it did with some people.

I enjoy Stargate SG-1 and will give Stargate Atlantis a chance.  Still, that's two shows.  Other than Enterprise, there really isn't any Sci-Fi on TV.

Well, it looks like both Mutant X and Andromeda have been cancelled because Fireworks Studios (I believe that's the correct name) has gone out of business.

It's going to be hard to see any sci-fi on TV in the near future.

2068  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Starcraft: Ghost Discussion on: June 23, 2004, 04:18:37 PM
I posted something similar to this at GG.

I did see the PS2 version of SC:Ghost.  It was right next to the Xbox version.  The jaggies were incredibly noticable.  It also had framerate issues.  It wasn't to the point where it was completely unplayable, but I wouldn't have wanted to play it for long periods of time.  I mentioned to the PR rep I talked to that I was surprised to see the PS2 version, but he mentioned that they basically wanted to show that it could be done, but the game wasn't as optimized as much as the Xbox version.  They still had more work to be done on it.  It looked really bad since it was side by side next to the Xbox version.

I didn't see the Gamecube version, because it was in the Gamecube area, and I didn't spend a whole lot of time in there.
2069  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is backwards compatibility a big deal? on: June 20, 2004, 06:49:52 AM
I have heard some say that backwards compatibility is a big deal for some people.  For other people, it's not.  What do you think?

For me, I honestly don't care.  I got a PS2 for PS2 games.  I can count the number of PSOne titles I have on one hand.  It never was a factor, but I didn't own a PS1.  I might have changed my mind if I could, but I doubt I would have sold it off if I did get one.

What does everyone else think?

I really don't know if I can take this show seriously.  This morning on Good Morning America some of the participants in this show were playing the dodgeball.  I can't imagine people getting too wrapped up in it though, unless you have some smack-talk between the matches.

Has anyone else heard of this?

Infoghost, check channel 191.  That should be your G4TechTV station.

I like some of the new shows, don't care for some, but I like there is more of a gaming focus to the channel.
2074  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / HDTV Antennas on: June 12, 2004, 03:19:36 AM
I have a HDTV, and I'm wondering if anyone has one of those HDTV antennas.  I used to get four out of six HD stations in, but now one isn't coming in very often.  For those familiar with, most of the stations listed are in the yellow and green area, but one is listed in the light green and one in the red.  Anyone else have a HDTV antenna?
2075  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Have PS2 Sales peaked? on: June 09, 2004, 02:35:52 PM
The article pretty much states that he is talking sales.

I have to wonder if we are going to see a "PSTwo" sometime around the release of the PS3.

Still, the PS2 is showing its age, and unless there is a chip that tells PS2's to break after a certain time, if people don't have one by now, they most likely won't be getting one.

2080  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Buying USED Games Hurts Developers? on: June 04, 2004, 01:38:32 AM
I'm glad to see that the article I posted has generated this much discussion.  I admit, I don't pick up used games very often unless it's the only way to get a game or it is significantly cheaper than used.  I also admit that a $20 game is much easier to impulse buy than something for $50.  Most of the time I wait.

It's still cheaper than getting a new computer though.
