Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Connecting Win 7 laptop wirelessly to Win XP machine
|
on: February 12, 2013, 03:15:33 AM

|
I am trying to get a connection to a Win XP Machine that has a printer connected to it through the wi-fi. This used to work with an old Belken router, but we recently switched to a D-Link that has better performance and range. Here is the basic configuration:
Win 7 Laptop - - - (wireless) - - > D-Link Router ------(wired)---->Win XP Machine ---------(USB port)----> Printer
I have tried setting up a new workgroup, changing settings in the router, but I can't get it to work. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I am trying to get more board game news and reviews posted, but what would you guys like to see from us as far as board games go? I am sure we aren't going to be BGG, but I don't want us to be BGG since I feel like some of those people there only live for board games. What would you guys like to see from us?
I do have several game reviews down the pipeline, including several older games, but I have a few newer ones coming down the pipeline.

Doubt there is much you can do at this time without going to small claims court... but as an fyi for the future.. never pay a subcontractor in full until the job is done... If I have a subcontractor that requires payment in full up front, I look elsewhere...
Yeah, we should have told the people watching the house not to pay until the work is done.

My wife recently hired a guy from Craigslist to do a fall cleanup at our house. We have someone watching the house at this time. The guy came, mowed the front lawn, and said that he would finish the rest the next day. The people at the house gave him the check. He promptly cashed it, and hasn't been seen from since. We have called and left messages (and I have only left one or two irate ones), but this was almost three weeks ago. The people watching the house got a hold of him and he said he would come Monday or Tuesday of this week, but he obviously didn't show up.
I really don't want to go to small claims court, but I'm guessing there isn't much we can do. I have filed a report with the Internet Crime Complaint Center on both him and his wife (who the check was written out to). Anything else I can do?

Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / PS3 bricked, or just needs a new hard drive?
|
on: October 26, 2012, 03:34:33 PM

|
I was having an issue with my PS3, where when I would start it I would need to rebuild the hard drive every time I would start it up. It would work after I did this though. I recently tried to upgrade the firmware and it caused me to get a black screen. Eventually I was able to get the Safe Mode up, but I have reformatted the drive using NTFS and FAT32 to try to get it to work, but it doesn't seem like it is working. I can't even use the "Rebuild PS3 System" (option 5) to get it to work.
Has anyone else had this issue? Is it bricked, or would I just need to get a new hard drive to get it working?

The Museum of Science and Industry is right by the Shedd Aquarium. It's something that I always enjoyed more than the art museums.
I will be at Two Brothers to go on a beer tour, but it is out in the suburbs, so that might be a bit out there, but there are a few microbreweries out there.
The women might like to go shopping at the Woodfield Mall. Not as big as the Mall of America, but there are plenty of stores there.
Cat and Mouse is a good game store if you like board games.
I'll try to think of a few other things later.

If you haven't seen it yet, the go and do a search for Dominion at the App Store. Rio Grande Games has officially released Dominion as an app. It is enhanced for the iPad but works just fine on the iPhone/iPod touch. The way the screen is laid out is different and you can't see the entire card on the iPhone, but it still works very well.
Best of all, it's free. The only bad thing is that you can't change the difficulty of the AI.

So I have my Vita and I was trying to set it up, but I got to the "you need an update to access the internet, access the internet to download the update." I just plug in the USB cord attached to my Vita to my PC and download the necessary software or plug it into my PS3 to take care of this, right?

Maybe it's because I couldn't care less about either team, but that was an awfully dull game until the 4th quarter.
FTFY. Seriously, I enjoy a good defensive battle, but this wasn't smashmouth football, this was dink and dunk the whole game. One big play the entire game. What a yawner.

Who wouldn't rather face the Giants than the Saints? I'd rather face ANYONE than the Saints right now, Green Bay included. Giants have a stouter defense, and the Packers can outscore the Saints, not to mention that the Packers should be fully healthy on their O-line and Greg Jennings will be back. The only question mark is Saine, but Grant looked the past couple of games. I will say that I agree with you, that I'd rather see San Francisco in the NFC Championship game over the Saints, but neither team is going to have a fun time with the cold weather. The thing is, Niners have already beaten the Giants this year. SF is probably the team that's most built to beat Green Bay @ Green Bay. It's a "cold weather" type of team. Ball Control, best defense in the league, doesn't require lots of passing. I'd much, much rather take our chances @ Green Bay than I would against New Orleans even at the Stick. Except they don't play in cold weather, and I doubt that they know what it's like to play on slippery turf with a hard ball. Obviously you haven't been to Candlestick during high tides... As to your other points, on paper I tend to agree, but the 49ers are like invisible ink, you don't know what you are going to get. I haven't been to Candlestick during high tides, but I have been to California and see people wear winter jackets during weather I'd consider comfortable or needing a wind breaker at most.

Except they don't play in cold weather, and I doubt that they know what it's like to play on slippery turf with a hard ball. It's a good thing that they don't require a lot of passing since Alex Smith isn't a franchise QB. They are 29th in the league in passing and 26th in total offense. 380 points all season compared to 560 for the Packers. I think Smith struck lightning in a bottle and won't hold up in the playoffs. Not only that, but the Packers had more INTs than the 49ers. Also, the 49ers are inexperienced in the playoffs, and most of the players who played in the Super Bowl last year are back this year. More players than on the Saints SB team too. The only huge loss from last year's SB team was Cullen Jenkins.

GO DETROIT! I'm surprised you'd be rooting for Detroit. If you want to face the Giants, be my guest. We'd rather see the Lions over the Giants anyway. Either way, I wouldn't be too surprised if SF loses their first playoff game.

Well, it was great to see the Pack beat the Lions while sitting a few key players. It was a pretty crazy game and my voice is still a little hoarse.
I admit I wouldn't mind the Lions to beat the Saints if for no other reason to see the Lions make it back to Lambeau. The only team the Packers should have a tough time with in the playoffs is the Giants. They played the Packers the hardest during the regular season, and the other teams are dome teams that will wish they were playing at home during the playoffs.
While it'd be interesting to see a rematch of last year's Super Bowl, I doubt it will happen, but a rematch of Super Bowl XXXI looks very possible. That would be a fun game to watch.

Im going to be quite interested in who and how the Packers play vs the Lions this weekend. The game is meaningless, positioning wise and I wonder how long they are going to be willing to risk Rodgers ( as well as a few other key players ). Against Detroits d-line and vs a team thats needing a win for a better playoff position? I would be surprised to see Rodgers play more than a series or two. If the Packers take the loss here, people will understand but if they play for the win and lose Rodgers to injury, their Superbowl dreams would likely be over.
I'm guessing that they'll play their starters for at least a half unless Rodgers is getting pounded on early. The Packers will have a bye week, but you don't want them to be rusty. Also, Rodgers had more yardage in both games against the Bears than Brees had. Just saying.

Call me crazy but I think the Niners could give the Packers a good game. They can control the ball with the run, they minimize turnovers and keep the ball away from the other teams offense so perhaps they can frustrate the Packers like that, of course they would need to score TD's when in the red zone and not more FG's. I'm not sure how that same style would work against the Saints but who knows eh?
We saw what happened to the Pack when Rodgers is rushed hard like the Chiefs did. The Niners can definitely bring it. As for the Saints, they just can't play in NO for the Niners to have a shot. We also saw what happened when the Bears did it to the Packers this past Sunday. While the Bears have an injury riddled offense, the defense has some very good players and Rodgers still carved them up with a patchwork O-Line and without Greg Jennings. The Packers have their issues on defense, but I still think that the Packers are the most dangerous team in the playoffs.

I've never played the BG or IWD games or Planescape Torment games. Are they hardcore difficulty or do they have easy difficulty modes?
IIRC they all have the option to change the difficulty levels. I know the Baldur's Gate games did, so I can't imagine the others not having it. Pretty sure BG & IWD has sliders, but I don't recall anything in PS: T. Don't let that deter you though, Planescape Torment is one of the finest games ever created. If you're going to give them a shot, be sure to grab the widescreen and bug fixing mods. The character sprites are crappy, but the handpainted backgrounds on these games are stunningly beautiful...even by today's graphics standards. IIRC, don't you have to die a few times in PS:T to actually complete the game?

We are currently looking at using Amazon Prime for Streaming instead of Netflix. Has anyone done this? The thing we liked about Netflix is that we could steam it to any console we had. How do you do it with Amazon Prime? We don't have a TV with wireless built in, so that is out of the question.

Redbox kiosks are open if the store is open if it's inside the store. If it's outside the store, it's 24 hours.
If you rent a game at 12:30 AM on Tuesday, it is due back 9:00 PM on Wednesday. It is always the next day AFAIK.
I haven't rented games from them, but that's how the movies have worked. It's pretty seamless and easy.

What kind of information are you looking to find? Unless you're looking for something specifically printed in the manual, I can probably point you to an online resource that will serve your needs much better.
I lost my manual when I had a laptop get stolen and the manual was in there. I just like to have the actual manual (it's the completist in me), but it's not that big of a deal.
