521  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Anyone else having problems with Gone Gold? (Pt. 2) on: October 09, 2004, 01:54:50 PM
wow -- everyone is still here and the party is growing...

I dunno about some of the old GG R&P'ers, but I'd love rto discuss the dabate and other things of consequence.  I have no desire to pull people away from the CG site - everyone here has been EXTREMELY welcoming, but I kinda gotta agree with Fed & Ebonstone and say the last thing we should do is ask CG to accomodate us rather than vice-versa.

Therefore, if GG is not resolved by monday, I'll begin putting up a specifically R&P forum using some of my bandwidth.. Maybe I can get the GG R&P archives or something, or maybe the CG staff would link it in.. Who knows..

Anyway, out of deference to the peple that view the R&P stuff as a "cesspool" and a "disaster" (to name but two more colorful descriptions) I'll refrain from anything else in that vein for now...

Carry on..

PS my own pet theory is that this may be the prelude to a grand re-opening of GG.  Seems unlike Rich (or anyone) to just "pull the plug" on something that has been so much a part of their lives for so long.  Consider:

For months, mods have been alluding to "behind the scenes improvements:

For a YEAR the forum software has needed serious updating

For more than that Rich has been popping in occasionally to say he wasnts to come back.

Bill recently left.

SO.. It's not inconceivable that all ofthese things are coming together and the powers that be want to surprise the community with a grand re-launching with new (or "new old") staff and as we speak are clapping hands gleefully at our confusion (and being reinforced that we care about GG at the same time) while they make the final massive content/technical change..

Damn.. my tinfoil hat fell off.  where was I?  OH.. nevermind.. but hope springs eternal smile

Hey guys-

Like most of you, I would be sad to see GG go. I have only been here a couple times but I do occaisionally play PS2 with my sons and I have been thinking of getting an xbox.

If anyone passes through and wants to contact me my email is [email protected]

I know that GG changed over time, but even as it grew it was still a wonderfull community with a great group of posters.

Agreed smile  I'm mostly PC myself, but I got an Xbox and live to play sports games with my (now spread out across the country) friends from way-back times smile  We have a blast...

I agree with having a PC Games forum here as well.  Sounds like a good idea to me.

Right on!

Not that I have anything else to add, really, but it DOES seem mighty odd that someone would simply pull the plug -- no message, no nothing - especially when for the last few months the mods have been making cryptic assertions that tthere was some stuff going on behind the scenes to reinvigorate gone gold.

Of course at the same time they said if people volunteered to help that it would be welcomed, but AFAIK people that DID volunteer were not really taken up on the offer.  MAybe it was the wrong kind of help being offered?  Who knows...

Even if the plug wasn't pulled, this is almost the same thing.

It went down mid-afternoon yesterday.  It looks like the server that is hosting the site is hosed right now.  It responds to pings after 4 or 5 seconds.  That implies a huge load on the CPU.  But who will respond to it?  Stephen has been upgrading to the new forums for a year now.  I know he wasn't paid, but it's silly to expect things to work when the people who can do stuff just don't care to.

I honestly don't know what kind of bandwidth GG uses, and hell -- I don't even know who I'd talk to, but I just checked -- I've got about 300GB of transfer monthly over ar Rackshack just sitting there, and numerous other locations that I could spread the load around at essentially no cost (since this is all unused but paid for bandwidth).  If someone wants to get the word out to ... whomever.. I can have my admin port it over with no problem.

That would truly be unfortunate....

I contacted Rich awhile ago (through Andy) with an offer of financial support, and could extend that to hosting.  I'd hate to see the site go the way of the dodo, if only because I really enjoy talking and getting the perspective on things that everyone has, from games and life in general all the way through to the dreaded R&P forum smile (good to see ya here Eco smile  )

If anyone is interested, the offer still stands.  I'd be happy to get my folks working on getting the forums back up and then rebuilding form the inside out, as it were.
