The forum is setup and ready to go. We just need to make a call on a database infrastructure thing and repoint the domain from the temp page.

I take it OO is down for good.

Quite the contrary. Barring a botched upgrade/conversion (which I wouldn't completely rule out), we should be back late Monday or Tuesday. As Rip said, the old forum has been restored, and I'm in the process of running the upgrade script. The script is not very fast (it has 1.2 million posts to move after all), but it fortunately is mostly automated, so I can let it continue to run overnight.

I probably could've just deleted LordMortis' posts and had it running within an hour, but that seemed kind of cruel.

I do wish the powers that be would give some closure to the whole thing, but I'm not holding my breath for that.

If the OO Staff decides to throw in the towel, you can be sure it will be announced.

I don't have any update at this point. The database is still not available. I haven't heard anything new on when it will become available. Staff has started some "what if the db never comes back" discussions, but it's all very preliminary at the moment.

The search function never worked properly so other than ongoing epic length threads I only really ever looked back a month or two in post history.

Just one little FYI that I think alluded to earlier, if OO does come back, a forum software upgrade (which would also likely happen at the same time) would significantly improve searching through old posts. I've tested it internally and it works a lot better now.

If the question asked is needed for genuine input, might I consider that a separate thread with a poll option be used.  Preferably created by Gedd or Rip so that people know (well might understand) that it is a serious question and not just time killing.

It's not really a serious question as in "What would the community like us to do?". It's a thinking exercise for those asking why we haven't just started clean at this point. It's also something I've given some thought to during this time.

Besides, I have this thread bookmarked. If I add one more bookmark it's going to make the Bookmark pane scroll.

I noticed the Wanderers' site is back up, seemingly with its forum history intact.  Did they get it recovered from Rip or did they have some other form of backup they used?

Rip recovered a lot of what I assume are "customer" databases. Of course the question follows "well if he could do site x, why not OO?". I would assume OO's size has a part to play in it since it probably took longer to recover.

How much effort would it take to put up a two sentence progress update once a week so we at least know something is happening?

Without looking at my post history, I've answered "update?" questions a few times in the last few weeks here. I only update the OO page when there's actually something new to report. Otherwise it would like:

"5/21/08 - Checked the MySQL server, the OO database is not up yet."
"5/22/08 - Checked the MySQL server, the OO database is not up yet."
"5/23/08 - Checked the MySQL server, the OO database is not up yet."

And I am checking it every day.

Also, why does the temp page refer to "OO Forum Staff" when no one but Rip seems to want to take any ownership of what's going on?

I say "OO Forum Staff" on the update page partly because I ran the first official statement (and possibly second) with the staff. It sounds more official-like too.

Quote
Well, some of Rip's posts seem to refer to other people having to make decisions.  For example, he's hinted that OO could go up "as it was" but that they might upgrade the software, etc., now since they were going to in the near-term anyway.  He's suggested that isn't his decision to make.  So who's is it?

Edit:  For example, in this thread on April 29th Rip said "It is however possible that OO could be up and running where it left off by morning. That is/was/will be a staff decision."  He said that in reference to whether they would just put OO back up or would do some previously planned work to improve/upgrade the site.  I'm just wondering who the "staff" he's referring to are.

The staff includes the technical admins, forum admins, and the moderators. It's probably been mentioned elsewhere, but prior to the downtime we were discussing (and actually pretty much on the cusp of) doing a forum software upgrade/conversion, in addition to moving the site to different hardware within Rip's domain.

With the downtime, we talked about what to do with bringing the site up, whether to do the software upgrade immediately (after all, what's one more day of downtime?) or put things up knowing we'd be bringing it down in the near future again for the upgrade. That's the decision Rip is referring to.

At this point, we're still waiting for the database to be brought back online, which echoes the temp page, and is why there has been no further update.

The OO upgrade should contain a hell of a lot of bells and whistles by the time it is up or else I'm confused as to why we are still treading water.  (Mandatory ocean/squid reference.)

You realize the downtime isn't because of an upgrade, but rather because of the hardware failure and needing to rebuild the server and site, right? If you're expecting magic fairies to come and serve you coffee and donuts while a friendly gnome types up your post as you dictate, you're going to be a might bit disappointed.

I'm actually in the process now of trying to put up a temporary page. The domain is at GoDaddy if I recall correctly, so just need to get in touch with ImLawBoy. My contact info for him is a year-old though, so if anyone has something more recent, feel free to PM me.

I'm not sure I want to get into putting up a temporary forum though. There are several currently in use (GT, PH, Qt3), and it just doesn't make a lot of sense to add in a 4th at this point.

Free or not, he still took on the responsibility of hosting the community, and year old backups and 2 (3, 4?) week outages don't sound all that responsible to me.

For the record, the lack of a recent offsite backup is entirely my fault. I'm as surprised as anyone that I don't have something from at least a few months ago. When we get back from this, I will be doing more frequent backups of the data. I know that doesn't help us now, but it should help us going forward.

Quote from: Tals on April 17, 2008, 10:58:46 AM

On a side note Gedd - are there any backups, even if it went back a month would it be that bad if we lost a months posts - as opposed to being down a month (or longer) whilst we wait for data recovery....just a thought as downtime as opposed to lost data is always a nice juggling act.

The last backup of the database I've done and been able to find is a year old. That's a *lot* of posts (and some admin actions to boot).

Nice. Might have to play with it some on the home box.

Disappointed to see they're (SMF) still using tables for layout though. I think phpBB3 has finally moved into the "modern" world of divs/css for layout.

Okay, yes, I will admit that I was wrong and that there are some 5 man places you can travel to to get some decent loot. I guess my point is that the game goes from being causal to a grind to continue to 'power up' your character. Didn't get the random blue drop from the boss? Turn right around and try, try again!

Or you can go to any one of 7 (8 if you include BRD) dungeons and try a different set of bosses/challenges. Really, if you're focused completely on loot, then yeah, it's going to turn into a boss grind. If you enjoy hittng the dungeons and the challenge of some of them (5-manning Strath is still one of my most enjoyable parts of the game), then it can still be a lot of fun.

However, at some time you'll get to the point where you don't want to hit those dungeons again for a long, long time. Even with quite a few options, eventually you're going to burn out on the content.

Quote
And as far as PvP goes... The only people who will get the PvP items that are remotely useful are those who have been PvPing since day one, and are capable of spending every single day doing it over and over again. Once again, a grind.

Grind, yes. But you're incorrect that the only folks who'll get the "remotely useful" items are those that have been doing it since day one.

Getting the items from the PvP ranking system is extremely hard, and really only the most hardcore of PvPers who can devote a ton of time to it will succeed. Note however, that most folks upon reaching the highest rank and buying the available items will take a break and eventually someone else will overcome them. The bad thing is that, at least on Whisperwind, the top slot is basically controlled by a guild or two who essentially manipulate the system to rotate folks through the top rank.

What you're probably forgetting is the other way to get access to items in battlegrounds, and that's via reputation. It does take a lot of work to get to exalted where the purples generally are (and rightfully so), but by no means do you need to have been PvPing since day one to get them.

Once you hit 60, you absolutely and utterly MUST get into a group of 40 people just to advance your character further.

Well, actually there's a step in between where you only need to group with 4 others to advance. Most players, by the time they're 60, have a good number of green gear, some of it they've had since their late 40s. There are a lot of good high-end blues that can be had from hitting the high-end 5-man instances (DM, LBRS, UBRS, etc).

In fact, with so many folks wanting to get into the 40 man game, a lot of raid groups require a certain minimum gear set to get in. Not only does it mean you'll be well-equipped for the raid, but you'll also have the experience of working in these high-end instances (which are typically harder than the earlier instances).

Of course there is another option, that being the PvP route. You can get a lot of good gear by spending time in the battlegrounds. But if PvP isn't your cup of tea, then that won't do you much good.

There are some high-end items, even epics, that can be gotten solo, but they require a ton of grinding to obtain.

Oddly enough this very topic seems to be one of the hotspots on the WoW forums, and even got a sticky on what Bliz is working on to improve it (although there's no real details at this time).

I'd agree with you here Turtle, but I'd say it's more like 3 years. If the game is going to compete again, it's got to be completely redone, including the graphic engine.

Regardless of whether it's 1 or 2 or 3 years, the question is when it is released, will anyone care? They missed out on a huge opportunity to snag folks with the movies coming out, and unless Lucas has changed his mind and is going to make episodes 7-9, the free publicity from the movies will be long gone.

On top of it all, games like Battlefront II are satisfying the action Star Wars fans (at least that's what I've read), so all you have left are really the folks who've already played SWG, and you're not going to have a lot of folks from *that* crowd.

They'd really, really have to do something special to make a new SWG successful. Either that or hand the reins over to someone other than SOE.

*Never* trust the offical WoW forums for anything related to class info.
