I'm tempted to get this, primarily for the multiplayer.

Is ANYONE playing on the PS3?
2  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Best "Tycoon" Game? on: February 26, 2011, 09:21:48 PM
Sid Meier's Sim Golf is really fun and addictive.  And I agree that the Ski Resort games are kind of neat.  There was a really good Casino Tycoon game years ago.  Casino Empire maybe?  There was a really good one and a really sucky one, so be careful is you look for one of those.

I'd really love to hear some of your early impressions. My one concern is that several gamers on other forums are starting to show disappointment in the game due to the lack of quality recruits. Apparently, even though there are 1000 possible players to add to your roster almost all of them are garbage compared to your initial team.

Hmmm.  That would be a bummer if it's true.  Right now, I just don't know much about that topic.  I've played about 5 hours (I'm going very slow).  I've recruited two players, both of whom seem like pretty solid additions to my team.  One player is pretty fast and can score goals (and he has lime green hair, which is fun).  The other has mediocre stats but a really high ball control stat.  Both contribute.  Beyond that, though, I haven't done much with player recruiting or development.  I'll let you know what I learn as I play more.

My early impressions regarding the battle system are favorable.  The soccer matches are without question the best part of the game.  They are fun and challenging.  At first, I felt that I was in way over my head because things were too frantic.  But then I realized that if you don't give your players any commands, they still run around and try to get the ball.  So you don't have to instruct each player as to what to do all the time.  But when you want to run a play, you have to direct your players.  And if what you do works, there is a nice sense of accomplishment.

I'll update these impressions as I get further along.

I ordered it from a site called gamesbasement.  That was one of the sites listed in the Neogaf forum.  I ordered it on Friday and, suprisingly, it arrived today (I'm in Ohio).  I thought it would take at least a week.
5  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Inazuma Eleven DS (in English!) on: January 31, 2011, 06:43:45 PM
Inazuma Eleven (DS) is a soccer rpg by Level-5, the company that makes the Professor Layton games.  Basically, you run around the world with a soccer team playing matches, improving your players, and finding/recruiting new players (think Pokemon).  Here's a link to the Neogaf forum discussion:  http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=419579

I have been wanting to play Inazuma Eleven for a long time now.  I played an earlier game from the series years ago, but I didn't get very far because of the language barrier.  Last week, Inazuma Eleven was released in several more countries and in several languages (including English  icon_biggrin).  I ordered my version from the UK and it arrived today.  So if anyone else has been waiting to play this game, now is a good time.

I haven't tried the game yet so I can't give any impressions -- I was really just posting this to let people know that there is an English-language version floating around.  But the reviews have been generally very positive.
6  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: DC Universe-NDA lifted. Beta Impressions on: January 18, 2011, 09:38:07 PM
I am thinking of switching to a PvP server now that I've got my feet wet.

What server did everyone end up on?  (I saw a couple server names tossed around, but I wanted to know if the population levels caused people to switch.)
7  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [DS] 999: Nine Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors on: January 07, 2011, 06:29:10 PM
I'm playing it now.  I'm probably three of four hours in.  (The game is not nine hours long and there are no time limits for any of the puzzles -- at least none I've encountered so far).

It's a mystery/survival-horror themed game.  It sort of reminds me of Myst, except the puzzles are more compartmentalized.  Everything you need to solve a puzzle will be in the room (or rooms) you have access to during each puzzle segment.  The story is interesting and well-written.  I won't give anything away in terms of plot, but I will say is that it is a good, creepy, mystery story that takes place on a sinking ship. Sort of a cross between Saw and and a good mystery novel.

The gameplay is like this: complete a puzzle --> read lots of text to advance the story --> go to the next puzzle.   So far, I've enjoyed the gameplay and even the reading.  I read somewhere there are multiple endings, which seems cool.  The puzzles aren't overly difficult, but they are interesting, well-done, and do require thought.

Anyway, I grabbed the game after reading some good reviews.  It was hard to find, though.  The Gamestop guy said they didn't get many copies in and sold out fast.  I have seen it a few places after Christmas, though.
8  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Massively Single Player MMO - an idea on: August 31, 2010, 05:38:39 PM
There is a fun indie game called Minions of Mirth.  It is a mmorpg but it has a single player mode that mirrors the online world.  I got into the game a couple years ago and it was really fun.  It is a lot like Everquest.

Here is the link if anyone is interested: http://www.prairiegames.com/
9  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Settlers 7 "Paths to a Kingdom" Early impressions! on: March 28, 2010, 06:13:32 PM
From a graphics standpoint, how demanding is this version of the Settlers?  My laptop is two years old and has an integrated graphics card.  It runs the latest Anno just fine.  But is Settlers more taxing?

I've been traveling and have not been able to play for the last few days...

I really hate the battlefield veteran issues, I had them all linked and working for BC1, then today I logged in and checked and it says I have zero games linked.

That happened to me, too.  But it eventually fixed itself (within an hour or so).  Still very frustrating.

Also, Hark, I had fun playing on the PS3 last night with Depward and TheMissingLink.  Good teamwork, chatter, etc.  We were rolling along until the last map (ouch).  My PSN is grueslayer.
12  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Monster Hunter Tri Demo? on: March 03, 2010, 11:35:01 PM
I was just in Gamestop picking up BFBC2 strategy guide and the clerk gave me a demo disk for Monster Hunter Tri.  I wasn't aware that this was coming out -- is it a real demo?  Or just some BS preview disk?

Has anyone with the PS3 version been able to connect to the EA Store?  I had no luck last night or this morning.

So is there already DLC available?  Also, am I correct that there will be microtransactions via a cash store?  I'm still a bit confused.

Dep --

I know you have been following the game (and demo).

Do you know if the Qore demo is the same as the demo released on PSN yesterday?  The reason that I ask is because I picked up the Qore demo last week and finished the three chapters.  I then saw that the demo was released on PSN yesterday, accompanied by a message that if you finish the chapters in the demo, you will unlock a rare card and some other stuff when the full game is released.  I did not see that message with the Qore version.  I wanted to make sure that the Qore demo "counted" for purposes of these extras.  Do you know?

Also, how varied are the other set 1 cards versus what I've seen in the demo?  Are there lots of neat skills, spells, etc. that I won't see in the demo but will find in the full release?

Finally, in the demo, you acquire points to "buy" new cards.  Do you expect it to work that way in the final release?  In other words, is this a game where you buy "card packs" and hope to find that rare card?  Or is it a case where you have to just pay more "points" for the rare card you want.  The latter situation seems less fun.

I never played the PS3 version, but I love the demo so far.

Finished World Without End, by Ken Follett.  It is a sequel to Pillars of the Earth (the story takes place in the same town, Kingsbridge, two centuries later). 5 Stars

Now rereading The Stand, by Stephen King.

Here's a cool tip: if you're bleeding out, look at the bottom right of your screen where it shows your squad. Those that have bled out and are waiting to respawn, you'll see the red bar on their names tick down to the left. That's the respawn timer! So if you're bleeding out, waiting for a rez, and it doesn't happen and that timer is close to respawning... hit it and you can essentially have a couple of seconds to zero wait time to respawn.

Thanks, Dep.  That is a great tip.

By the way, if anyone is in Raven, let me know.  My PSN is: grueslayer

Anyone know how SMGs are in the game?  I'm in Raven.  I was thinking of trying supressed SMG but don't want to invest points if they suck.  I don't see many people using them.  Thanks.
21  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: MAG........... Now with impressions. on: January 27, 2010, 11:03:49 PM
I played for about two hours last night.  Mostly the team deathmatch game (I forget what it is called).  I stopped when I hit level five.

Hear are my quick and somewhat half-#@$% impressions:

What I liked:

The big maps with lots of nooks and crannys are fun.

The lack of a killcam is cool, since it benefits a a camp-o-centric player like me (I don't have the reflexes to run and gun).  You can hold down a spot without enemy players knowing your exact location.

It was incredibly cool seeing a group of six or seven enemies come charging around a corner and shooting everyone (including me).  Likewise, it was fun running around with a bunch of teamates.

Getting experience points is very addictive -- by the way, whoever said healing and reviving is a good way to gain XP was right.  I scored the most points in a couple rounds just by healing others.

I experienced no lag, at all.

Players were chatty but not obnoxious.

Grouping seems very easy.

The game feels a lot like BFBC (which I like alot) but is less beige (i.e., a bit more colorful).

What I didn't like:

The tutorial was not very helpful and some of the game's features are not very intuitive.

Graphics are a bit grainy (understandably so).

While I like the lack of a killcam, it means lots of snipers and sniper-deaths (for me at least).

The guns are a bit floaty -- it reminds me of Battlefield BC.  That's not a horrible thing, but I prefer the controls to be tighter.  Many people would say I'm crazy though.

The skill trees and unlocks seem daunting.  I feel like I am going to screw up my character right out of the gate.

I kept getting put into TDM games that were at least half over.  Of the ten or so TDM that I played, I think I was put into to only two at the beginning.  Most games were at least halfway finished.

Unless I am missing something, there is not a huge variety of guns.

There is more downtime than, say, MW2.  More waiting to play, longer respwns.  If you wait to be healed, the respawn is less of an issue.  But not everyone heals.

The manual sucks.

Overall, the pros outweigh the cons for me at this moment.  I can't wait to play more.  And I'm curious to see what the experience is like in a week or two when everyone has learned the ropes.
22  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Modern Warfare 2 Impressions [And official GT Review] on: December 10, 2009, 01:59:28 PM
Anyone wielding and type gun will kick my ass.

My biggest problem with the akimbo shotguns is that they look stupid.  When I see someone running around with two shotguns, the game loses its immersion factor.  The animation is goofy -- the people look too stiff, run too upright, and the guns look like arms sticking straight out.

They sorta look like zombies ... zombies who kill ... and kill ... and kill ...  eek
23  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Harper's Island (TV) on: December 09, 2009, 05:19:21 PM
I agree, CeeKay.  The writers tried too hard to make everyone seem like a suspect.  The story would have worked better had they (1) come up with a better ending twist and (2) been more subtle with the week-to-week presentation of the clues. (I don't even know if what I said makes sense.)
24  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Might & Magic : Clash of Heroes on: December 02, 2009, 04:26:37 AM
I've been playing about an hour.  So far, I am really enjoying it.  It reminds me of Puzzle Quest with a bit of Critter Crunch tossed in.  I don't know whether strategy will outweigh the luck factor (that was a small gripe I had with PQ -- luck played a big part in winning or losing a battle) as I've only had a few non-tutorial battles.  But I am having fun.  I'll post some real impressions tomorrow when I am in front of my computer (on my blackberry at the moment).

28  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Modern Warfare 2 Impressions [And official GT Review] on: November 25, 2009, 02:34:35 PM
I'm really enjoying the multiplayer (PS3), but man do I suck.  I'm amazed at how good players are at this game.

In any event, I have a couple questions.  What controller sensitivity are people using?  I've been experimenting but haven't really decided what is best (my results are mixed ... right now I am at 7, I think, which works ok).

But am I right to assume that the people who are insanely good are playing at the higher (or highest) sensitivity?

Also, it seems like the cold-blooded and ninja perks are essential to someone like me, who is basically canon-fodder for the better players.  Those perks seem to help.  But I hate giving up stopping power, because I need all the offensive power that I can get.

Assuming I stick with cold-blooded, what gun would still give me a good wallop and is fairly easy to use?  Does anyone swear by the FAL?
Really, what it boils down to is that I need every perk all the time.  icon_confused

Thanks.

I want to play this on my laptop, but I think I'm out of luck.  My laptop has Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset.  Roll Eyes  It meets all other requirements.

I've read conflicting things about whether the game will run at all using that chipset.  My hunch is that it will not.  But I've read a couple posts suggesting that some beta testers got it to work with this card.

Any beta testers try it with a similar card?

38  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Knights In The Nightmare from Sting on: June 04, 2009, 08:13:04 PM
I picked it up today, mostly because of the IGN review.  But I did like Y-Union for the GBA.  I played for a half hour at lunch.  It seems fun, but I'm lost.  It sorta reminds me of The World Ends With You in terms of its general gameplay, but a bit less frantic.  That's good for me.  While I loved TWEWY, my wife used to make fun of me for "spazzing" when I played it.  This is like a cross between that and Riveria (i think that's what the other game in the series is called.)

Anyway, those are my very quick first impressions. I'd give more but I'm a bit lost. And I'm posting from my blackberry.
39  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dark-Wind? Like Car Wars... on: June 03, 2009, 09:17:40 PM
I'm hoping that someone has played this online automobile-combat game.  I stumbled across the site while doing my periodic search for an Autoduel remake.

It's called Dark Wind.  There's a couple comparisons to the old Car Wars tabletop game.
