1  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Best Book Ever (?) on: September 23, 2010, 02:47:58 AM
John Irving's "A Prayer for Owen Meany" was an absolutely amazing book that changed the way I thought about so many things in my life.  The first time I read it I was living in Chicago and I was single in my mid-20s.  Besides the overall theme of the book, what I remember most is talking to friends who lived in my building and discussing the book for four straight hours one night.  I don't know if it is my absolute favorite, but from someone who reads about 100 books a year - it is a book that will stick with you for a lifetime.

That's right.  Please note that I don't practice non-compete law, I'm not your lawyer, I'm not licensed to practice in North Carolina, and my advice does not constitute legal advice.  His best option is to consult a specialist in NC and retain that specialist.

What Eightball said applies to me as well smile
4  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Noncompete Agreements (this one is in NC) on: June 23, 2009, 02:05:06 AM
From my law school days - I would say this particular non-compete would not hold up because the radius is too large to be enforceable.  A 400 mile radius would be WAY overreaching.  Non-compete agreements must be limited in scope to be enforceable - but please have your friend contact a local lawyer - a letter from the lawyer might solve the problem.
5  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Fourth of July as a holiday - who else doesn't care anymore? on: June 28, 2008, 09:58:46 PM
Well, I Love It!!  Partly because the 4th of July is my B-Day!! So, I am always fond of the holiday!  WBS and I will be going to the big fireworks show on the 3rd in Addison, the Park Cities parade first thing in the morning on the 4th, possibly a cook out at his parents in the afternoon and then another big fireworks show on the night of the 4th in Plano.  Should be a great B-Day!!

I also feel I am very patriotic and that it is fitting that my birthday is the 4th of July.  icon_biggrin
6  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Coming to Washington DC and New York City in May - Suggestions? on: April 09, 2008, 06:14:46 PM
Please give me all the good seafood recommendations in DC.  We probably won't go to Baltimore after all.  I liked the area of Fell's Point, but no big deal.

I NEED FRESH SEAFOOD   eek

And, last time I was in DC, I had the most wonderful crabcake sandwhich - tasted like the caught the blue crab that morning and served it to me by lunch.  The crabcake was fresh with huge chunks of crab meat.   drool   We Texans just don't have good fresh seafood.

7  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Coming to Washington DC and New York City in May - Suggestions? on: April 09, 2008, 06:07:39 PM
As an update to WBS's post (I am the cruise director in this relationship smile ), actually, are not staying in Georgetown.  We are staying a block off Dupont Circle at the Westin Embassy Row.  So, we are a block away from the Metro.  I have spent time in DC before and am very familiar with the Metro.

In New York, we will be staying at the AKA Central Park Hotel, which is at 5th Avenue and 57th Street.  The location is in between The Plaza and the Apple store on 5th Avenue.

So, now any other suggestions?   icon_biggrin

Question for the natives

If WBS and I take a ferry to Sausalito - can we walk to Muir Woods from there?  Or do we need to take a tour?  Or, can we take a cab from Sausalito to Muir Woods?

THANKS!! icon_biggrin

Amy M. Youngblood, Esq.

Yeah!!  I never have to take a 3 day exam from Hell again!!

And, a BIG THANK YOU goes to Whiteboyskim for standing by me and helping me through the last three and a half years (half a year if you count studying for the bar, taking the bar, and then waiting over 3 months for results!) of torture!  Love to my Sweetie!! smile
17  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Calling all Lawyers - Billable Hours Requirement on: July 10, 2006, 02:08:34 AM
Hi all,

I will be taking the Bar in 15 days - AAACCKKK!!

Anyway - cross your fingers - I will receive an offer this week from a large firm in downtown Dallas - (my last interview on Friday lasted two hours and I left with a very good vibe).

The billable hours requirement is 1900.  Doable? burdensome? piece of cake?  Can I still take two to three weeks of vacation a year if I work 7:30 or 8- 6 or 6:30?  Any thoughts?  Do you remember how hard it was your first year to meet the billable hour requirement?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!  biggrin

20  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Star Wars from the heart on: February 08, 2006, 04:24:38 AM
This evening has been perfect, so I thought I would share!!  I am a Star Wars geek just like my hubby, so how does he start off the week of Valentine's?  (Yes guys, gals think Valentine's lasts a whole week!    )

Start off with a very romantic dinner on the 39th floor at the exclusive Petroleum Club in downtown Dallas.  With a corner table and dazzling views of the sunset, my sweet hubby arranged a fabulous dinner for two topped off with a decadent warm chocolate souffle.

After dinner we had tickets to the symphony.  We walked one block to the Meyerson, the home of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and proceeded to hear a wonderful symphony of various Star Wars pieces from all six movies.  There were also in attendance Storm Troopers who marched the aisles during the Imperial March piece and danced during the encore performance of the Mos Eisley Cantina theme.

My hubby gave me an amazing evening and hopefully gives you guys ideas for this week and next!! smile

22  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Apprentice - What do you think? on: December 16, 2005, 04:22:23 AM

23  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Problems with Half.com on: December 11, 2005, 09:27:19 PM
Freezer - yes Half.com deposited the money to my account on November 4th - directly into my checking account and now they are taking it back.  Needless to say, I don't think I want them to have access to my checking account anymore.

I finally got through to Half.com.  Apparently - a glitch in there system withdrew money from my account.  WHAT?!?!?  I was the fifth person to call in half an hour who had a similar problem - Half.com just taking money out of their checking account.

They said the buyer never had any complaints and never requested a refund.

So, Half.com says they can't do anything until I email them - so I emailed them right away.  I hope to get a response by Monday or Tuesday.

I can't beleive they don't have better customer service for "computer glitches" such as these.  They take my money - illegally and unauthorized and then tell me I have to email them - WHAT?!?!?  I don't know when I will get the money back.   frown

So, any GG'ers beware of Half.com
24  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Problems with Half.com on: December 09, 2005, 09:01:11 PM
The problem is they have access to our checking account and just debited the money and told me afterwards.  Obviously I will cancel my account with them now, but I would like my money back or my books.
25  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Problems with Half.com on: December 09, 2005, 08:37:20 PM
I shipped the books on October 20, 2005.  I was paid around November 15 through Half.com.  Now, today on December 9th - out of the blue - Half.com is debiting my account for this sale.  It said to cover a refund to the buyer.  I have never heard a thing - that the books weren't received, that the buyer had a problem - anything.  Basically, I feel this buyer is stealing from me.
26  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Problems with Half.com on: December 09, 2005, 08:29:28 PM
I sell my old law textbooks and study guides online.  I just received notice that Half.com is taking the money back from me for a sale I made.  I sent the books in a timely manner, the person asked for a refund and now I am out the money and the books. :x

Has anyone had a similar situation?  How was it resolved.  Any advice?  Right now I am livid!!    :x
27  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Can you play an instrument? on: September 01, 2005, 02:54:42 AM

I could in high school.  Bass Clarinet.  Haven't touched one in 14 years though.

Well- Zarkon we have something in common.  I played Bass Clarinet as well as Contra-Bass Clarinet from 7th grade through 10th grade.  When I was a Junior I switched exclusively to Contra-Bass Clarinet and played it through College - I was in Concert band at Texas Tech, and for Marching Band was in Colorguard.

I also marched in the Drum Corps Sky Ryders one summer - best one of my life - again Colorguard.

I am a Band Geek and Proud of it!!!  biggrin
28  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Internet Money Making Schemes- updated with pic of check!!!! on: August 24, 2005, 03:48:41 PM
Well, Eco - it sounds too good to be true.  My dad who is retired FBI Special Agent and still works for the FBI always told me that if the money comes too freely, then it is probably illegal.

I know your Lawyer friend told you it was OK, but I question how this is legal and it looks to me like an elaborate pyramid scheme which is definitely illegal.  I say it is a pyramid because of the tiers, the money, etc.  If I were you I would look a little more into the plan.

Of course, I may be jaded because of my Dad and the fact that I am working for the Attorney General of Texas this semester in the consumer fraud division.

31  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Quick Help for Anyone Currently on for Seasickness on: July 03, 2005, 06:57:14 PM
For anyone who has time in 30 minutes - how do you get rid of seasickness hours after you are back on land?  A friend and I went to the other side of the island Spetses that I am staying on in Greece to go to a wonderful cove beach.  Well, at the end of the day, we got back on the boat to return and a big storm came up.  By the time we got back to the harbor, the Agean was really churning.  It has been five hours now and as I sit here, it feels like the world is afloat and rocking.  Any home remedy recomendations?  I am not digging this.

Thanks in advance!!   frown

Well - this island is starting to irritate me, however I HAVE THE BEST HUSBAND IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD!!!  Why - because he is sending me clean clothes via my luggage!!!!!!

Communication here is spotty - I had to go to five pay phones before I could find one that works and now I can't get my email - very frustrating!!  But doesn't matter anymore because I will have my clothes!  YEAH!!

By the way - I will never use Olympic Airlines again - for many reasons beyond the luggage issue which they could care less about!  I will write more why later.

37  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Amazing Race Finale - Holy crap! on: May 11, 2005, 03:04:41 AM
OK, so I was freaking out a little.  It just goes to show you that Uchena and Joyce deserved to win more than anyone else.  They are awesome people, who FINALLY caught a break.

Most exciting season of Amazing Race for me yet, because I didn't want Romber to win and that kept me tense from week to week.

I was so thrilled when Uchena and Joyce got on that flight!!  Hats off to American Airlines for letting them on - Woo! Hoo!

BTW - who cares about Romber getting married?!?!?

And - I am sorry to say that dear hubby and I were not chosen for the next season - the family season.  However, we will keep trying - and hopefully we will make it!! smile

Well, I was sad to see Lynn and Alex go, but I like all the teams except Romber.  I was especially sorry to see Joyce go through with cutting her hair off - it grows back, but as a woman, I am sure that was a little traumitizing.  But good for her for going through with it!

LASTLY - Ron needs to dump Kelly NOW!!!!!  Dump her Ron, Dump her!!  The preview for next week - shows her saying that he has issues with commitment.  Ending with - him saying - what about my military career, what about commitment to the military?  She has the GALL to answer - you got out of that by being a POW.  WHAT!!!?!?!?!?!?!?

Ron dump her now!!  For your own good!
