Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / You ever make coffee and...

Yep. My coffeemaker sits next to my toaster, and I keep them both unplugged when not in use. Sometimes I go to make coffee but plug in the toaster instead, which is not very effective.

I saw a sneak preview this evening. I don't want to say too much, so I will just say that the concept is great and it was surprisingly well done. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. A few of the songs were just brilliant. If you like South Park humor and can handle the crude stuff along with the clever, this is a great Friday night flick. I'm trying to figure out what they cut out of the one controversial puppet sex scene -- looked rather thorough to me (and I may have even learned a few things).

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / R&P Decision
|
on: October 12, 2004, 08:23:55 PM
|
Well, I can't say I'm not disappointed, but like many have said, this is your site to do with how you wish, and I thank you for considering the requested changes.
I think I speak for a lot of R&P posters/lurkers when I say that my biggest concern is losing access to a community that I greatly valued. Of course it's not your obligation to establish such a residency in the wake of GG's apparent demise, but for most of us, CG appeared to be our best chance to continue our little world with the community in tact. That about sums up my thoughts as well. I will miss having the R&P option, but I certainly respect the decision and plan to do some hanging out here to talk about gaming, hardware, movies, etc. I hope to keep seeing a lot of familiar folks.

Thanks for opening the Road to Gold and Hardware Hell forums. There goes two of my specific suggestions, dang you guys are quick. I'd love to have access to the GG forums as a searchable archive ("The Golden Archives" -- get it, like Golden Arches? Um, ok, moving on...) if that becomes feasible. There is a great Knowledge Base there and I frequently searched for back info in Games by Title, Hardware, and EBG to help guide my purchases or get the scoop on films, etc. On R&P, I'd like to see it in its own forum, at least on a trial basis. I think it could work well with the moderation philosophy here, but I understand the concerns about moderation resources or other side effects. There were times when there was a lot of ultrapartisan spam and a fair helping of  but there was also plenty of good discussion, which would be a loss not to have. However, judging from the fine ship they are running here, I trust the CG staff to do what's best for what they want this place to be.

Yeah, as someone listed, Grifman is another one I don't think I've seen here. I particularly appreciated his posts on more obscure RPGs in development. Reporting for duty, Sir! I'm touched that I remembered, even if it was only with respect to "obscure RPGs" Grifman Well, there was also that unfortunate cream cheese incident back in the summer of aught-three, but I thought we had both made a pact never to speak of it.

I think this phenomenon in part illustrates a difference in mediums. Whereas it is possible to have a rational, intelligent discussion about games on this forum, it seems almost impossible to have an actual verbal conversation about games without sounding like a huge geekosaurus. Once you start talking about games out loud, even with other gamers, it's hard not to sound like some 12 year-old kid hanging out at the mall EB.

"Kate Botello, Hot Or Not" may have been the time I laughed the hardest at GG. I've never really watched Tech TV, and had no idea who the heck she was, but the rapidfire responses of Morton (pro-hot) and Simon (con-hot) were amazingly funny. That thread proved that it is actually possible to have perfect comedic timing within a webforum thread, AND with pictures. Amazing work. I have to echo that meeting several GGers here in the DC area has been a real highlight, including the visiting Killer Pimp. ("We are way overdue for another gathering," says Freezer, without actually volunteering to organize one.) And the GG forum, with its mighty "Search" function, was an invaluable one-stop source for gaming, hardware, news, and pop culture. If GG is never to return, I truly hope the forum content can be recovered somehow and made available in at least read-only form. Since I tend to buy games way after they are released, searching in PC Games by Title was always my first step when checking out a new purchase. EBG came in handy that way too -- in fact just yesterday I bought a nice watch in part based on recommendations in the few recent watch threads. (Got a Swiss Army Infantry model, in case anyone is curious.) Now that I look around my apartment, I can trace a bunch of things to GG -- countless game purchases, a few bottles of wine (thanks triggercut, Mr Hido and others), etc. GG drives the economy! Most other specific moments have been mentioned, but in general GG had an unusually high concentration of interesting and thoughtful posters, both on the gaming side and the EBG side. I think Rich's style and also Bill's Night Calls drew a lot of folks in and made the forums and the site itself a site not just for games, but a site for gamers who also knew about and liked to talk about a lot of other stuff. I think their generosity, and that of the mods and other GG staff, spurred a lot of additional community goodwill that made things such as the Blackhawk Christmas, the PIFF thread, and other acts of kindness possible.

How about Outcast? Older game and I have only played a little bit of it, but the world was rather impressive.
Doh, you had that listed. Nevermind.
I definitely say Beyond Good and Evil then.

(At the risk of sounding all elitist and insider-y...) I was racking my feeble brain (and looking at the Member list feature, nice!), and the main one that comes to mind is Ironrod. Anyone else? K.C. Chang? Unfortunately, I am generally bad with names except for the people I stalk and other DC area folks such as Eightball, triggercut, Siljanus, etc.
If anyone knows of others, then maybe someone who had their emails could drop them a line. (I don't have Ironrod's.)

Agreed. If it comes to that, I would certainly appreciate KD adding some GoneGolder support to his site (PC forums, etc), but it isn't appropriate to have him turn his site into Gone Gold MKII. That about sums up my thoughts as well. I wouldn't want this site to morph into GG 2.0. However, there are a lot of folks here that I enjoy discussing pc games, hardware, etc with (as well as other random stuff, which is mostly covered as Off Topic) and it would be great to have a few forums in which to do that, if that ends up being appropriate. And if I end up succumbing to the Console Gold effect and buying more Xbox games, well... I can live with that risk. I also want to say I really like this forum software, lots of nice little features. I did lurk here a bit (note my reg. date) and browse the rest of the site when I was on Xbox gaming sprees, but didn't post much until this weekend.

A problem is that to get into quartertothree you have to register, and Tom Chick never seems to confirm that registration. I've registered there twice and it always tells me I have the wrong password. Tom either doesn't respond to emails about the problem or doesn't receive them. You've probably already tried this, but emailng him at the address in the post linked below worked for me and I was activated later the same day: http://www.quartertothree.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13830

-I saw I Heart Huckabee's so I wanted to report on that. (Thumbs up but just barely. Kinda diappointing cuz I was looking so forward to it.) Cool - have been waiting to see some GG impressions on it. My sense from the trailer is that it probably has some funny/clever parts but overall is not so hot. Though, if I am on the fence, Naomi Watts will quickly cause me to teeter over to the "go see it" side. She is criminally cute.

No, no, no. What Bunting needs is a long, long contract extension. He is a class act and an asset to (91% of) the ACC. All he needs is another 10-15 years to get his recruiting going and get the right players in there to run his system. Don't bet against the Heels!

This is very true....the CGFE is strong, not to worry...you won't have a chance. You got that right. While trying to reply to a post here, I clicked in the wrong spot and accidentally ordered a Gamecube online. Damn, you guys are good. :!:

Another GGer checking in here to see if anyone knew the scoop on the forums. I guess we'll see... I registered here at CG a while back when the site started up, but I haven't posted much since I am mostly a PC gamer with a side order of XBOX gaming. I have been doing a little more XBOX lately, though (finished Mechassault and have started PoP, also have a half-finished BGE to get back to at some point...). All right, back to work for now I guess!
