1281  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / "A night of Smallville" on: December 10, 2004, 03:12:55 AM
Yeah, the witch episode was.... suboptimal.  I like Lois though.
1282  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Closer.....Still feeling the pain from this crapfest. on: December 09, 2004, 07:32:56 PM
I pretty much echo ElijahPrice's thoughts (maybe I would give Closer a B+ but I'm fussy).  I, too, liked the brutal honesty.  I'm not a big fan of Portman's acting, but I thought her performance fit her character well here.  Roberts was also pretty good, and Clive Owen was superb.  In a weird twist, I liked the performances because you could really feel the lack of real chemistry between the characters.   In a more "standard" relationship film, that lack of chemistry is often a flaw, but here it works as a strength.

If you prefer your movies to contain some likeable characters and a bit more plot, you probably won't like this movie very much.  And there's nothing wrong with that.

FYI, I think the story was adapted from a play.

I think the episodes last night were the S3 finale and the S4 opener, if that helps you get your bearings.  Yes, you've missed a lot. smile

And yeah, the flying was cool.  I hope they find more excuses to use it despite their policy of "no flight, no tights" for Clark on Smallville.  Note that "Kal-El" flew, not "Clark."

I wish they'd release a combination pack with Gothic 1/2 plus epxansion.  I'd definitely buy it then, but right now I can only find G2 and the completist in me says no-go w/o the 1st.

Starting with G2 is no problem. It even makes it easier to go back to Gothic.

How does it make it easier?  I have Gothic 1 but haven't had time to really get into it other than fiddling with the video settings and walking around for about an hour.
1287  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Back to nVidia I go... (6600 GT AGP) **Now with impressions* on: December 07, 2004, 04:13:48 PM
Good choice on the 6600GT.  IMHO that is definitely the sweet spot right now as far as bang for your buck.  The price should eventually creep closer to $200 as the supply increases and other brands are more available.  Side note: I had an XFX GF4-ti4200 and it was a great little card, never any problems at all.  I was even a little sad removing it when I upgraded to a 6800GT.

sig20, the 6800 is certainly better overall than the 6600GT since it has 4 more texture pipelines (12 vs. Cool and a wider memory bus (256-bit vs 128), but the 6600GT makes up for that a little bit with a higher clockspeed.   I don't have benchmarks handy right now, but from what I recall the 6600GT is pretty close to the 6800 in average resolutions (1024x768 or so), but the 6800 pulls away when you start to jack up the resolution and the AA/AF.

Random note: Nvidia has released a beta driver 67.03 that fixes an issue with the 6600GT and the SiS chipset (if you have a mobo with the SiS).

1290  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / Anyone want to by a GF4 Ti4200 (with a dead fan) cheap? on: December 04, 2004, 03:04:25 PM
I don't need it (already have a spare ti4200), but a cheap/easy fix for the buyer could be to stick one of those PCI slot fans right under the card.  There should also be plenty of vid card fan/coolers on newegg.
1291  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / why does it take hours for private messages to be delivered? on: November 28, 2004, 08:32:33 PM
Maybe they don't go to "Sent" until they are read by the recipient?  I was wondering that too, so that was the best guess I had.

1293  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / good, free firewall? on: November 21, 2004, 10:24:44 PM
My pick is Sygate Free Personal Firewall.  I previously had significant speed and connection/stability problems with Zonealarm on an otherwise stable rig, but have had zero issues since switching to Sygate.  A lot of people love ZA, but it did not work smoothly for me at all.

In general, the firewall will just alert you when a game or other app tries to access the internet, prompting you to either allow it or deny it.  You can also tell it to always allow the program to get out so you don't have to give it permission every time.

1295  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Video card Question on: November 20, 2004, 10:08:40 PM
I'm not 100% up on ATI stuff, but usually "SE" for an ATI card means that it is a budget version, usually with fewer pipelines, slower clock, less memory and/or memory bandwidth than a non-SE version.  The X800SE looks like it will only be available as OEM to Dell, Gateway, etc and not directly to retail customers.

I'm guessing that the X800SE only has 8 pipelines and 128M, compared with the 12 pipelines and 256M on the retail X800 Pro, and possibly a slower clock and smaller memory bus.  It should work pretty well for you, but not as fast as a full X800 Pro and with less memory.  It may be close to a 9800 Pro speed-wise.

Hey just found this chart:

1298  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HL2: Upgrade Retail Version? on: November 16, 2004, 06:08:18 PM
After some thought, my best logical guess is this: You will eventually be able to purchase the other goodies via Steam, probably in various combinations (going on the history of the umpteen different HL packs that were released), but it will end up costing you a little more total than if you had just gotten the Silver package in the first place.
1299  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HL2 performance thread on: November 16, 2004, 04:40:08 PM
Anyone running this with a 6800GT?  If so, what version video drivers are you using?  Any stuttering or image quality problems?  I have a 6800GT on its way to me, so I want to be ready.
1300  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HL2: Upgrade Retail Version? on: November 16, 2004, 04:36:19 PM
Yes, great question?  Does anyone know?  Right now I am planning to just buy the basic retail box, but it would be nice to have the upgrade option in case I ever want to play DOD or check out HL:Source, etc.
1301  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss - Anyone else? (Guilty Pleasure) on: November 16, 2004, 04:22:14 PM
Guilty.    I watched most of the first two episodes.  I don't know if I will keep watching, but on a higher level (yes, I said higher level) I do like how it is a satire of a lot of the BS that goes on in the biz world and the reality show world (stupid sales warm-up exercises, unbelievably dumb and gullible contestants who will put up with ridiculous situations as long as they are on a show, etc).   I'm probably giving it too much credit. slywink  And I can't believe the contestants are really falling for this (Excalibur?!?! LOL), but maybe I am giving THEM too much credit, too.

I agree that no actual successful businessperson would agree to be the real boss here.  I think the secret boss is probably either one of the contestants (who's a mole), a Fox mid-level suit, or a chicken that is randomly picking between two names.  My money's on the chicken.

Look for a Honda or Toyota.  My Honda Civic is 10 years old, over 120K miles, and runs perfectly as it always has.  And I get close to 40 mpg on the highway, maybe mid 30's around town (that's a guesstimate).  Not exciting, but a solid reliable car.

Call once a couple of days after a date to set up another, if so inclined. If you already have a date set up, no more than one hello/confirm call in the interim. If you don't like the phone, just use it to set up your preferred mode.

Yes, that is correct dating-mode phone protocol.  thumbsup

Once you shift into relationship-mode, things of course change.

Probably to avoid "typecasting". Once Christopher Reeve took the role it's all anyone can imagine him in, just like Shatner as Kirk or Nimoy as Spock.

I love Smallville as a guilty pleasure, and Tom Welling is pretty good on it, but he is outclassed by most of the actors on the show.  I'd advise him to take the millions while he can. smile
1315  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Turtle Beach sound cards on: October 22, 2004, 03:52:22 PM
Well, after trying an alternative to Creative, I eventually made the change from my Hercules Fortissimo III (not quite as good as the Santa Cruz but roughly equivalent) to an Audigy 2-ZS.  World of difference in favor of the Audigy 2-ZS, and I just have a basic 2.1 speaker setup.  Much better EAX and 3D sound support.

For gaming, IMHO the Audigy 2-ZS is a no brainer, with the caveat that a few folks still seem to experience some sort of system incompatibility with it.  The drivers seem fine and I haven't had any problems with my Intel mobo.

I also like the new digs.  BUT I wish there was some easily usable archive of the Gone Gold forums.  Whenever I wanted to buy a slightly older game I always searched through the forums.  Pretty much any question I had was asked and answered at some point in the past.

I hate not having access to the Former Gone Gold Collective Brain Trust.
