1  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: Plants vs Zombies 2 out in iOS app store on: December 19, 2013, 03:53:00 PM
I've been enjoying it, but the revamp hit me as I was almost finished with the Pirate world.  I sort of miss the old way they did the star challenges, but I do not miss grinding for keys (I STILL was one key away from unlocking the last gate I had in Egypt even after doing everything else on that level).  I'm undecided about the other balance changes (50 per sun vs. 25) as it's hard to judge with the new gameplay elements (minecarts) in the Wild West world.

I would have rather paid a straight price vs. the IAP nonsense.  Seeing some of the cool plants being IAP really freezes my melons.  I won't spend money on stuff like that.  For a new world/expansion?  Ok.  For a plant or powerup?  No thanks.

I was going to grab it for my tablet, but after looking at the screenies it looks like a better fit for my phone.

I may pick up a 360 at some point.  I'll take a look at the next gen once the next-next gens come out.  I'm on the trailing edge, baby.
5  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Re: Harry Reid Leaning Toward Filibuster Reform Vote This Week on: November 23, 2013, 02:52:28 PM
The Republicans were going to do it anyway as soon they got the Senate votes to do so.  When the Rs last controlled the Senate, they told the Ds that if they dared to use the filibuster it would be taken away from them.  Oops...

Besides, this does not include actual legislation or SC nominees.  That would truly be a "nuclear" gamechanger, as the breathless press loves to say.

I believe I read that the always-listening features do not work if you lock your phone with a PIN, which is understandable but unfortunately neuters that feature for a lot of folks.

I grabbed a 32G iPad Air Friday night.  I had been on the fence between getting a Mini and iPad4 for months and months, and this feels almost like the best of both worlds.  I also got a blue smart cover, which feels fine to me.  I may add some sort of rear shell in conjunction with the smart cover when those start rolling out from the third-party manufacturers.  I just don't want to add too much weight.

Did you see the smart cases? Back shell with a Smart Cover attached.

I did, but at least at this point I don't think I want a full one-piece case like that.  I'd like to be able to easily take the cover off for extended handheld use, though it looks like some of the rear shells are designed to keep the Smart Cover anchored.  If I cannot easily remove the cover when desired, I might consider something that has a small magnet on the rear that will keep the smart cover open and flat against the back of the case.  The wirecutter recommended the Joy Factory Smart Suit for previous iPads, so we'll see how those get reviewed once the Air versions are out.  I think I'd still rather just be able to remove the cover, but I'll have to use the tablet for a few weeks to see what would fit my usage best.  Other than my phone, I have a basic Kindle, and I just use a sleeve case for that so I can read unencumbered.

I had my cheap CD player stolen out of my old car on Easter weekend several years ago.  They only left a few small gouges around the dash opening and relocked my car afterward, so they were very thoughtful.  It had a detachable face but I had stopped removing it at night since I didn't think anyone bothered with stealing car radios anymore.  My bad.

ASRock is fairly well regarded as a budget-friendly mobo alternative to ASUS/Gigabyte.  I'd check on the brands of the SSD and PSU.  The price seems okay.

If he wasn't broken after Walt told him about Jane, he is now.  They probably don't even have to lock him up any more.  He's just a husk of a person at this point.

Did anyone watch Talking Bad?  Adam Scott is pretty sharp, and really not that much different from his P&R character.

Yup, he was.

I rewatched the ending and I'm not sure about that, though I don't have a great eye for those things.  He grimaced as he ducked behind a car, but I don't think I saw any blood or anything.  It could have just been a "we are so hosed" grimace, maybe.

Though clearly, of the 4 on that side, Gomez is wearing the red shirt, as it were.

The Windows Phone needs some help in the audio department, and they need to crack the corporate world - full, seamless integration with RDP, Exchange and Sharepoint would be huge. Not because everyone uses those things, but MS is one of the major backbones. IF they can convince corporations that their phones are more secure, better integrated and help business move forward, they'll be sending them home with employees regardless of the individuals desires.

Yep, that's pretty much what they should do and need to do.  Whether they can do it, we'll see.

Yeah, my bad on the pricing--I was seeing some $150-160 3DS models on Best Buy's website but they were probably clearance/OOS.
28  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: Nintendo 2DS? on: September 01, 2013, 02:47:38 PM
It's for kids/parents who want to buy their younger kids a cheaper system for Pokemon.  The only question is whether the price difference vs a 3DS is worth a new line.  They probably need to get it a little cheaper, but maybe that's enough for some folks to grab it for their kiddos.

/edit: Looks like the price difference is more like $30-$50 depending on 3DS sale prices, which is better than my quick $20 estimate from glancing at Best Buy.

WTF Was That?  Part 2:  the local media has been telling us all fall how BYUs offense was a fast paced, quick scoring, yardage -in-chunks offense, drawing many breathless comparisons to Oregon.  In reality, it was an utter dud against a very mediocre Virginia team (with one of the worst QBs I've ever seen), managing only 16 points in a 19-16 loss.

The UVA defense should be pretty good this year, though the offense looked terrible.  That was quite an ending with the deflected INT and lateral play that set up Virginia's winning score.  I think the sloppy weather and long delay helped slow BYU down and gave UVA an advantage.  UVA will get rolled by the Ducks next week, so I won't feel too bad about stealing this one.

Well the assholes at VolumeDrive can't find my server, so that's that.  I'm already recovering the database from the 21st (then have to apply the incrementals that I had after that).  The DB recovery is going to take a long time to insert the rows; but I am pretty sure that the root partition has enough space to do it now.

*sigh* Sorry folks, wished we could have got the data back right up to near the outage.

ETA for recovery will be sometime this coming week, Monday/Tuesday ideally with my schedule.

Just a thought, now that the madness has died down a bit, have you double-checked with Burstnet to see if they did retain the server after all?  A long shot, but maybe worth it if it would save you some effort on the restoration.  I cannot imagine VD will stay in business much longer, if they even still are and not just trying to milk the last drops of cash from their customers.  What rubbish.

Thanks for all your efforts, FP.  Hope you are still enjoying the long weekend -- please don't ruin yours for our sake.  An extra few days won't kill anybody.

To be fair, unless the universe has changed drastically, consumer versions of Quicken are pretty much piles of crap everywhere.  Clunky, outdated interfaces that are at least a half a decade behind the times are par for the course.  (I cannot speak for the biz-oriented versions; maybe they're awesome.)

19x12 is fine if you have the space for it (i.e. at least a 24" panel).  For much older games (made for 4:3 resolutions), you may have the option of running them in 1600x1200 with no scaling and they should work well (with black bars on the sides of course).

Fascinating!  Reminds me of the margarine dye here in the States back in the 50s.  There was some regulation or something that prevented margarine companies from making their product the same tasty color as real butter, so they ended up packaging yellow dye with the margarine so you could add the butter color yourself.

Exactly what I was thinking of.
40  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: What music streaming service do you use? on: August 28, 2013, 07:01:21 PM
I guess it won't hurt just to try Google and see how it does.  None of these services actually change the mp3 files on your PC in any way, do they?

The reason I'm finally pursuing this project is that I got a neat little Logitech portable speaker for Christmas last year that has bluetooth.  I've just been using it with my trusty Sandisk Clip mp3 player plugged in the aux port, but I would prefer to have access to my entire collection via streaming through my phone or tablet (once I finally get around to buying one).
