1  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: Small World wins Games magazine's Game of the Year on: October 12, 2009, 12:02:34 AM
If your family can handle Dominion, then Small World should be no problem at all.  The rules are simple.  Personally, I enjoy Small World quite a bit.  It's not a complicated, land-grab strategy game, but more of a lighthearted game where you send very small waves of troops against your opponents.

Because it's literally a "small world" (the board is designed that way on purpose) conflict is inevitable.  My family and students that I've played with understand that and don't get upset when attacked, as they expect it.  The enjoyment of the game is the fun mix of races and powers, which are random each time.  It's always interesting to see what combos come up during the game.

Because you control a small amount of troops, even if a powerful combo comes about it's hard for the game to get too much out of hand.  Thus, most of the games I've played have been generally tightly contested and interesting until the end.

The game is surprisingly the most popular with my students so far.  For serious gamers however it might not have enough meat to it, as the strategies are fairly simple for experienced players.
2  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: Dominion on: August 23, 2009, 01:52:22 PM
Although I can't really do two player with the wife anymore.  It either has to include the six year old or be something I can play with only her.

As for Dominion, I ordered it.  We'll see if I can get a game going.

I recently went through the same thing with my wife and two daughters.  They enjoy games, but hate, hate, hate to go through rules explanations.  Dominion gave them problems at first, because it takes a few rounds of play for non-gamers to understand the concept of creating their own deck.  They were bored silly until it suddenly clicked for them, typically when they managed to pull off their first combo.
6 years old might be a bit young for this game, but I'd give it a shot.  Well, especially since you already ordered the game!

I loved it.  How could you not like anything with Harris and Fillion?

Makes me miss Whedon on TV.  Hope his new show this fall is good . . .

I bought a Brother laser printer a few months ago (the HL-2170W) and I love it.  My wife was going through inkjet cartridges like crazy for her job, so I decided to give this printer a try.  Nice crisp printing, and I've not run out of toner yet.  I'm a convert.

It's been up and down the last few days.  I've gotten in each day, but often not on my first attempt.

[later]  Of course, now I cannot access the site no matter how often I try.
10  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Home Theatre help needed! Updated 12/23 with purchases! on: December 24, 2004, 04:07:24 PM
Lokiju, Avia is a dvd that will help you calibrate all sorts of settings for your new TV (color calibration, brightness, and so forth) and speaker setup.  Very much recommended.  It made a world of difference with my TV.

If you are a cheap sonofagun like me and don't wanna buy the Avia dvd, do what I did--I rented it.  If you have a Netflix account, they carry it.
11  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Sirius vs XM Sat. Radio on: December 08, 2004, 11:28:42 PM
Thanks ericb.  I ordered my wife's Skyfi 2 Sunday evening, and was getting a tad anxious since they've given me a confimation number and charged my credit card--but not actually informed me if it shipped.  In fact, the confirmation order # doesn't even show up in their system yet.

I did notice they have a notice on their website that XM has  been slammed with orders, and to be understanding about delays.  I'll give them until Friday before I start crying like a baby.
12  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Sirius vs XM Sat. Radio on: December 07, 2004, 12:01:24 AM
Glad to hear you received your order, Ericb.  How long did they take to ship it to you?  I got so excited when I ordered via the friends and family deal, that I've been logging in to track my order every couple hours.  Never been obsessive before, but I know my wife is gonna dig this gift.

So ease my impatience and anxiety.  How long ago did you order your stuff?      And was the install easy--it certainly doesn't look terribly complicated, but I've been known to make the easy appear difficult.
13  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Sirius vs XM Sat. Radio on: December 06, 2004, 12:57:07 PM
Good choice--I just ordered the same thing myself last night for my wife.  Here's hoping they honor the deal, as it looks like quite a few folks are taking this friends and family offer.  I got a confirmation #, so here's hoping!
14  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines Performance Thread on: November 26, 2004, 03:02:49 PM
Yeah, my rig is lower than most folks here.  I'm running at 1024 x 768 with graphics options turned to high, and high quality sound turned off.  It gets choppy at times, but nothing too terrible.  I find if I don't actually know how many frames per sec I'm getting, I don't get too upset by it--so I have no idea what I'm actually getting.

My specs are:

XP 1800
Geforce 5900
768 MB

I had an XP 3000 in my rig, but it just up and died the other day.  I'm curious how much smoother Vampire would run if I wasn't using this old spare cpu.  With Christmas around the corner, I don't figure I'll be able to get anything better, so I suppose it's a moot point.

I'll throw in another vote for Kerio--I also had connection problems after Zone Alarm updated to their latest version.  Kerio works as well as Zone Alarm (for me), with no hassles at all.
16  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Gene Wolfe: Wizard Knight pt. 2 on: November 18, 2004, 11:53:22 PM
I agree--I also thought the Book of the New Sun easier/more approachable than the Long Sun books.  Maybe it was just me.  I loved 'em all.

Heck, I barely recall the events of Castelview.  I read it when it came out, and it's faded with time.

Unbreakable, you definitely need to read The Solideir of Arete.  Fun stuff.  Mirrors the New Sun--instead of a character with perfect recall, the Soldier of Arete's main character has no long term memory.  Fascinating what Wolfe does with such a premise.  The second book was much tougher reading, but I  love the first one.

I can't wait.  It's next on my list, after Bakker's The Darkness that Comes Before and Erikson's Midnight Tides.

20  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / The Incredibles is... well incredible! Duh! on: November 06, 2004, 09:13:27 PM
Great flick, but if you have kids under 10 they may be somewhat bored for the first half of the movie.  My youngest daughter was awful "squirmy" until the action picked up in the second half.  Now my oldest two daughters--as well as my wife and I--loved it from start to finish.  Good stuff.

I left AVG for Avast as well, after the latest update was causing me problems.  Avast has been rock solid for me, seems to update much more often than AVG, and as previousyl mentioned--the price is definitely right.

Eddie kicks ass.  I can't wait to see his soon-to-be-released dvds.  Thanks for the info!  I slapped those suckers in the top of my Netflix queue, so now I just have to wait for them to arrive.

Pretty impressive for a short film done on their own.  I'm sure this guy will be attracting some attention soon.  I can't imagine how many indie film makers we may have in another 10 years.  Just think what they'll be able to produce on their home rigs by then!
27  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Funny Kids Costumes on: October 30, 2004, 01:48:26 PM
I guess I'm getting sensitive in my old age, but I'd NEVER put my children in that second costume!  What the hell would it be telling kids--let's mock folks that were cruelly treated in prison?

Sorry.  It may just be me.  I have students from the Middle East in my ESL classes--maybe I'm just touchy from having to defend them from other kids who enjoy mocking them at school.
28  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Guild Wars? Anyone playing it? on: October 29, 2004, 09:52:02 PM
Agreed, the multiple loads was annoying--though I have so many distractions at home w/ 3 kids, I just used load times to deal with them.

Still not sold on this game.  Combat is not as involved as I was hoping.  At least in the beginning, my various attacks don't seem to be all that different from each other.  Why choose one attack over another?  Perhaps it becomes more of an issue later on?
29  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Guild Wars? Anyone playing it? on: October 28, 2004, 10:52:58 PM
Yep.  So far it's ok for a free game . . . but I've not been overwhelmed.  But I've just started, so we'll see if it becomes more diverting as I progress.
30  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Zonealarm ate my internet... AND explorer.exe on: October 26, 2004, 10:08:26 PM
Zone Alarm stopped working right for me after the latest update--I often couldn't connect to the net, and it "cleared up" every time as soon as I'd turn off ZA.  I switched to Kerio as others have mentioned, and it's worked flawlessly for me.
31  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Go Astros !!!! on: October 21, 2004, 09:52:22 PM
Well, I won't say I knew the game was over when I saw Micelli coming in--but I did tell my daughter "watch out for the long ball".

Now she thinks I'm a prescient genius, when in reality I'm just a cynical, distraught Astros fanboy.  Lordy I hope the old man can do it one more time . . .
32  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Go Astros !!!! on: October 18, 2004, 11:59:59 AM
Oy, what a game.  I was so nervous I kept pausing my satellite and pacing about the house.  The Astros have been in the only truly interesting post-season games this year.  Sure, the Twins-Yankees had tense extra inning affairs, but Minnesota could never catch a break and make a go of it.  What a great series so far!
33  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Go Astros !!!! on: October 17, 2004, 01:18:38 AM
Old Man Clemens did it.  Looks like we may have a series after all!  Minute Maid Park was hopping this afternoon--I've never heard the place so loud as it was today.  Amazing.  Gotta love their chances tomorrow too, with Oswalt pitching on five days rest.  I wish it was Sunday already!
34  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Farscape - it's coming! on: October 16, 2004, 01:47:42 PM
At last!  I've set the satellite to record and warned my family that I will be watching this Sunday.  Since I (don't kill me) don't like Enterprise, Stargate, etc. Farscape was the only SF show in TV I enjoyed, especially after the untimely death of Firefly.  I did't realize how much I missed the show until this post.  Thanks--I'd forgotten it was coming up.  Woohoo!

I'm just a tad disturbed that the letter writer "Jenna" is 20 years old, is still in high school, and has been with her boyfriend for 15 years.  As a father of 3 girls, this gives me the heebie jeebies!

(great post anyway, ya sicko!)

Well here's hoping that Old Man Clemens can pitch well and long enough to avoid the problematic bullpen.  I know I'll be there, screaming my lungs out, begging Garner to leave the Rocket in for "just one more batter".

It's such a gorgeous morning--I certainly hope the Astros keep the roof open.  I've only been to one game at Minute Maid with the roof open.  Houstonians are so used to their air conditioning that it's almost always closed.  What's the point of having a retractable roof if you don't use it?  Besides, it's always fun to watch homeruns completely leave the stadium when it's open!  With these two lineups, that's definitely a possibility.

It's certainly obvious why the Cardinals had the best record in baseball.  I'm just watching the games, and I break out in a sweat everytime Pujols comes to bat . . . and Rolen . . . and Edmonds . . . and . . . .

40  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Go Astros !!!! on: October 13, 2004, 10:40:06 PM
Yes, I was hoping this thread was brought back to life from Gone Gold.

I was so excited to see my beloved 'Stros finally defeat the Braves.  I was lucky enough to see them play last Saturday--my wife scored me field seats from her boss!  I've NEVER heard the Astros fans so loud before.  It was an awesome sports experience.

I can't wait for tonight's game.  Even though we are in an awful spot rotation-wise, you still gotta play them games!  I'm just hoping for a split in St. Louis.

My wife informed me today I may have tickets again this weekend for either the Oswalt or Clemens start.  I knew getting married was the best thing I ever did!   biggrin
